The reality is, there are

anything can happen.

I didn't really expect the cows to
run out the gate.

police.

In Bermuda today, police to the
rescue for a stranded driver.

It's definitely good when you have
something that's heartfelt

and you can help someone out.

No-nonsense traffic officer Milton
takes to the road.

Your bike is off the road, man.

head off a fight.

That's why we're here.

The Bermuda Police Service recruits

officers from around the world,
including about 30 from the UK.

It's the start of a new
day for Derbyshire-born officer

Jonathan Wood, nicknamed Woody, and
his colleague, Officer Sasha Franks.

So, erm, we're on patrol today,
erm, day shift,

so we're going
out on patrol right now.

It's going to be reactive,

there's nothing in the pipeline that
we've already got planned,

so just see what we get sent to or
if we see anything out the window.

Officer Woody's had a varied career.

I actually used to work for a bank
before I joined the police

and, yeah,
working in an office was...

..nine to five, was just...it
wasn't for me.

He spent three years as a firearms
officer in the UK

before moving to Bermuda.

It's exciting kind of jobs that
they get involved with and the,

erm, the taskings
that they do sounded really

interesting and,
and a fun thing to do.

I saw an advert to come over here
as a firearms officer.

My old force gave me a career break,

so really I had nothing to lose,
so, when I found that out, I just,

er, that made it 100% that
I was going to do it.

Minutes into shift, officers Woody
and Sasha are called into action.

Six foot tall, wearing a
white shirt, blue baseball hat,

black pants.

He ran off from the garage towards
the cricket club.

He's stolen, erm,
some liquid detergent.

It sounds like there's been
a theft from the garage

and it sounds like somebody's stolen
a bottle of detergent

and then ran out of the store.

The store owner's ran out
after them, so they're trying

to find them as well, and we've been
sent to see if we can locate them.

As they speed to the
scene of the crime...

Blue hat, right?
Oh, here we go.

Right on cue.

Hello, hello. Hello.

Just hold on for us one second.

..they see a man who matches
the description of the suspect.

Been in the Esso garage?

Just put it - just
put your buckets down a sec.

Yeah, just stop, stop moving.

Listen to me, stop moving
or I'm going to stop you.

We got a description and, as we came
round the corner in the general

area, we've seen a male exactly
matching that description and

we'll try and establish whether it
is the person we're talking about.

Small amount, but it's still,
it's still theft and, er,

we still need to determine how we're
going to deal with him from here.

Have you been arrested before?

Yeah.

What for?

Right.

Anything to do with theft or
stealing things? No?

I wouldn't say that there's
a large amount of shoplifting,

it doesn't feel like it
happens very often.

One of the reasons that there's
a lot less is because it's

so small and people are
so easily identified, so the chances

of shoplifting and getting away with
it, especially if you've been

seen or you're on camera,
is much smaller than in the UK.

Got any identification on you?
Got anything...

Just got, erm, just got car
cleaning...

When we had the theft suspect, we
didn't find the stolen item on him.

However, we can
arrest on suspicion of an offence,

so there was definitely enough to
suspect that he had stolen the item.

While officers search
the scene for evidence of a crime...

Really?

..the store owner appears and that
changes everything.

Stole from my store. Whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa...

All right, we'll sort it.
That's why we're here.

Don't get involved with him
directly,

just speak to my colleague
over there.

I was a little surprised to find
the owner turn up so quickly

and, when he did, obviously,
he was very irate.

This is the same person, yeah?
That's him.

OK, cool. All right, OK.
Speak to this guy.

And I realised that he also had
something in his hand which

potentially could've been a weapon.

Just a bottle of detergent,
let's relax, let's relax.

Come this way.
Just going to get your name.

I understand why he was irate,

but I didn't expect him
to actually try and go for him.

Suddenly, a simple incident has
the potential to

escalate into something much
more serious.

Around half the size
of Jersey, Bermuda is criss-crossed

by almost 300 miles of road and
keeping tabs on the traffic today...

Seat belt!

..is officer Milton Joshua Hill.

There are around 20,000 scooters
and motorbikes on the island,

and policing them
is a large part of the job.

My thing is stop everything!
So I'll definitely go after 'em.

I'm chasing you, I'm chasing you

until it's either not safe or
you get away.

I have no qualm about that part.

I mean,
it's an adrenaline rush as well,

but my main thing is, like, is he,
is he going to hurt somebody else?

What can I do to make it safer?

You know, you don't want to cause
him to crash.

Even though I'm chasing you,
I'm still concerned for you.

It's not insured?

I'm going to have to give you two
tickets, all right?

The biggest issues that
I see is bad riding habits.

When I say bad riding habits,
racing,

what we call popping a wheelie,
running from

the police, and we have quite a few
unlicensed, uninsured bikes.

So, if I catch you doing anything
wrong, the idea is,

basically, "Oh, well, you've got
to pay a fine for that."

All right.

OK, man, please try,
try and sort the bike out.

It looks like it's in good
condition.

Just minutes into his shift and
he's already issued two tickets to

a motorcyclist for no licence
and insurance.

So, what you tend to find is
people are usually unlicensed,

uninsured on bikes
and rarely in cars.

Erm, it's also almost no
way of getting away if you get

caught in a car, whereas bikes,
sometimes people will roll the dice.

Next time, before you start riding.

He was in the process
of clipping his helmet up,

but he'd already pulled into the
road, so just reminding him,

you're supposed to clip
it before you start riding.

You'll see that a lot of times,
people ride and then as soon as they

see the police, they're struggling
to clip it while they're riding.

Again, it's another one where you
hope that just talking

and shouting at them, they kind of
get the hint - next time, do better.

How you doing, mate?
Your bike is off the road, man.

You didn't realise it? Since June.

Now Milton's found another bike
that's unlicensed and uninsured.

Do you have your licence on you?
OK.

Let me...
I can pull it up digitally.

You didn't, kind of, clock when?

Yeah, I understand.

You deal with so many people
who squirm out of responsibility.

The person might have an excuse,
"Oh, I was having a hard time, I was

"going to pay it." "Oh, it's insured
I just haven't had a chance to
license it."

I see a bike that's
been off the road two weeks,

then you might think, "OK, this
person might have a reason for it."

Your bike's been off the road
a year, there's nothing you can

say that's going to justify why
that bike's off the road.

Like I said, the big thing is,
usually, when I stop guys, I

hope that it's insured cos I could
try and work with them a bit more...

..when it's insured and that's the
big ticket.

But, obviously,
the thing with all the accidents

and stuff like that is you can't,
kind of, ignore the no insurance.

I think I would describe my policing
style as a little bit of go

after everything but give people who
deserve breaks a lot of breaks.

What I like to tell people,
take a picture with your phone.

You're going to lose the pieces of
paper,

but you won't lose your phone.

Exactly, and they're going to
disappear.

Police can stop dozens of bikes
on the island every day.

Can you turn off the cycle for me,

I'm Police Sergeant Milton Hill,
the reason I'm stopping you is

this bike's coming back as, erm,
unlicensed.

What I'm going to have to do, I'm
going to have to write you

the ticket and then you will have to
go to the court

with the proof of the insurance.

If you could've shown me right now,
then I wouldn't write that ticket.

And Officer Milton's on a roll
today.

This is the first
one for the unlicensed bike.

I need to write up the other one.

But officer Milton's been
so busy issuing tickets

he's hit a bit of a problem.

Oh, my goodness me,
it is your lucky day today.

I do not have any more tickets.

It is your lucky day.

So, you're just going to have the
unlicensed one.

I can't write the other two.

So, I'm going to have to go back to
Somerset Police Station

and re-up with more tickets.

I didn't realise I had
so few tickets left.

Erm, I've wrote him what I can,
but he got lucky today.

It's peak summer season in Bermuda,
the island is packed,

so it's all hands on deck for
Police Commissioner Darrin Simons

and his bobbies.

The summer is our busiest
time of year.

You know, from a policing
perspective, you've got

kids are home from school,
we've got more tourists out

and about and, you know, one of the
things that we do, just to provide

some reassurance, just generally,
erm, to tourists in particular,

is going to be, you know,
we'll show a presence on the beach.

The southern beaches are most
popular with tourists.

Yeah, it's quite rough today.

And officers Kareema Flood,
Khun Evans and Kimberly Spring

are patrolling one of the most
picturesque, Horseshoe Bay.

So, where are you visiting from?
Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, OK, OK.
Have you been over there?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've been there
quite a few times. Yeah.

First time here, love it.
Oh, that's good.

When did you guys get here?
Er, two days ago.

Ah. Until when?
Until, er, Sunday.

TALKING OVER EACH OTHER

You guys got to be sweating bullets!

Thank you for what you guys do
Safe, for real.

Yeah, it's quite hot.

Crimes against tourists is
very rare,

but even then, we will, you know,
just walk up and down the beach,

you know, ensuring that people
see that the

police are out and about and it very
often just brings, erm, a measure

of reassurance to individuals
that are enjoying the beach.

As you can see, they do have all
the, erm, the signs out,

the warning signs about the rip
currents.

As you can see,
the water is a bit rough, right?

Erm, are you familiar with rip
currents? Yes.

Yeah, you're quite familiar
with them, right,

so you understand it can happen very
fast, right? So definitely,

if you do venture into the water,
just stay where you're comfortable.

You guys enjoy yourself. Yeah, thank

With no shade
from the scorching sun,

beach patrol is often
a challenge for bobbies on the beat.

I actually feel like jumping in.

Police can wear traditional uniform,
Bermuda shorts and knee socks,

but officers Kareema
and Khun aren't exactly fans.

When I joined the Bermuda Police
Service, that was

the mandatory uniform, you had to
wear shorts, so, now that I have the

option, I have a tendency to stick
to long pants cos most of my time

in an office or in the
building, which is air-conditioned.

I haven't worn
the Bermuda shorts in years.

If I had to attend
an incident on the beach,

I would prefer these long pants

if I had to go through any scrubs or
trees or anything like that.

Like, right now, out and about like
this,

I am feeling a bit warm, toasty.

But battling the heat is all
part of policing paradise.

It's been great weather, the sun is
shining, a nice ocean breeze,

it's been a good day.

On the west of the island,
Officers Woody

and Sasha Franks are dealing with
a volatile situation...

You cannot steal from my store, man!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
all right, we'll sort it.

..as a store owner squares up to
a suspected thief.

This is the same person, yeah?
That's him.

OK, cool.

All right, OK.

Speak to this guy.

I thought that he was going to
actually go for the,

the suspect himself
and maybe attack him.

So, the important thing for me

was to get in-between the two
of them and try and calm him down.

And then I realised that that wasn't
working, so I realised I had

to move it up quite quickly, erm,
and become more assertive with him

very quickly, which, which I did
and it worked, fortunately, yeah.

With tensions eased,

Officer Woody turns his attention
to gathering evidence.

Er, what type of detergent
are we talking?

Are we talking like
washing up liquid,

or are we talking clothing
detergent? Dishes? Doing the dishes.

Not clothes? No, for doing dishes.
OK.

And what value would you say it's
going to be, do you know, or do you
need to check what it is first?

It's not much, it's not much,
it's, like, $3.

$3? That's all it is, yeah. Right.

Like I said, if they ask me,
"Could I have it?"

I'll give it to 'em, but don't steal
from me. I, I don't like...

He told me it was only worth three
or four dollars, so I asked him

at the point, er, you know,
how do you want to deal with it?

His response was, "Book him!"

Which was a bit of an old-school
response, but I knew what he

meant and he meant, you know, I want
to, er, prosecute him, basically.

Doesn't look like he's got it on him
now, so I don't know where...

Right. He's... Where would he
have put it? Have you any idea where
he might've put it, or no?

No, because what happened, when I
came out the store after him, he
ran.

Well, could he have dropped it then
or...? Probably...

All right. But you'll see that he
puts it down his pants. Yeah.
And he goes out the door.

Do you want to go back
to your store then?

And then we'll come and speak to you
there as a follow-up.

OK. All right.

We've spoken to the shop owner
and he's identified that this is

the person that he's
reported as taking the detergent.

He hasn't got the stolen item
with him, but the store

owner himself has identified him as
the person that's taken it, erm, and

that he was aware the store owner
was coming out after him, so if

he thought he was going to get
caught with it then potentially he

would've dumped it somewhere,

so that would make sense for him not
having it.

But the guy at the store says
he does have him on CCTV, so we can

always double check that, but he's
identified him, so we're happy we've

got the right person, even if he's
not got the stolen items on him.

The likelihood is he's going to be
going in to custody.

I think we might be, well, I think
we might be... OK, just...

..at this moment in time,
you're under

arrest on suspicion of theft of this
detergent, the reason being

that you've been identified by the
store owner as the person that took

it, so we're going to have to
interview you about that down at the
station,

so that's why it's necessary to
arrest you and take you down there.

So, you're not obliged to say
anything but if you,

if you choose to do so, anything you
do say may be written down

and given in evidence, all right?

OK, so this, this other unit,

they're going to transport
you down to custody in Ch...

..in Hamilton, OK?

After he was arrested, erm,
we have to check his pockets to make

sure he's not going to put anything
in the police car that might hurt...

..harm him or, or us.

Have you got anything on you you
shouldn't have in your pockets?

Don't take it out,
just keep your hands...

I'm just asking you...before I start
putting my hands in there,

anything sharp?
Is there anything that...?

What about
anything drugs or related?

OK, and that's in that
pocket there, is it?

OK, well, just keep your hands up
out the way of your pockets for me.
Keep your hands up.

Right.

Oh, so you did have some
identification on you, then.

Right.
Just put it all in there for now.

Is that like a crack pipe or
something? Yeah.

And, during that search,
we found some drug equipment,

which looked like a makeshift,
sort of, crack pipe.

It's an offence to have drug
equipment on you in Bermuda.

Er, what they will do is
they will send that off to be

tested, to see if they can find
residue of drugs within

the equipment, and then he may be
interviewed regarding that.

The suspected drug offence is
an added complication,

but Officer Woody is
focused on the alleged theft.

At the moment, erm, the guy
from the store is looking to pr...

..to press charges, or to
prosecute him for the offence of,

of stealing, even though it's only
just a small amount, $3, it is,

like you say, it's still the
principle, so we've got to go

and get a statement from the guy
from the store in relation to them

being stolen and if they've got any
CCTV in relation to that as well.

The Bermuda Police Service has
almost 400 officers

and each path to a policing
career is unique.

I wanted to join
since the '80s, but, unfortunately,

at that time, I didn't meet
the height requirement,

so since which they've changed
some of the requirements

and I met the height requirement,
so now I made...I made it!

I was a rock climbing
instructor for a number of years.

And then,
I actually got married in 2012,

so I knew I wanted a family
and stuff and I thought, "OK,

"I need to start picking a career,
like, an actual profession."

Growing up was a variation
between a lawyer or Police Service.

I went to school and had a semester
at Bermuda College and had

enough of that and decided, "Nope,
policing is where I'm going to go."

My background is actually
an accountant's.

I found
out that it wasn't really my thing,

so I moved on to one of our local
banks in Bermuda.

Most time at that bank was spent
applying for police.

You actually feel like you're
helping your community and
there's...

..these are people you're going to
see in the grocery store,

you're going to see as they're
taking their kids to daycare,

and so you interact with people that
you actually know, and helping

those people means so much more than
just helping a random person.

I love my job. I got asked
yesterday, someone was like,

"Do you like your job?"
I was like, "I love my job."

For Officers Shandora Burrows

and Bryden Pedro,
policing is their dream job.

You know when you go to a primary
school and they always bring

you up onstage and they say, "What
do you want to be when you grow up?"

My mother told me
that I always said a police officer.

I primarily joined the police to
assist people and help,

and help people
when they're in trouble, erm,

so, whenever I can help someone,
it's the whole reason why I'm here.

Even in paradise, officers can deal
with agitated offenders.

But, today, it's a
small community-related job

that requires their attention.

So, we just came to
Southside Police Station

and we see this lovely
young lady here...

In distress!

Erm, she said she came
because her...

..she has a flat tyre, so instead of
her waiting for Fix a Flat, er,

PC Pedro and myself have just
changed the tyre for her.

I was coming off the hill
and I felt the car shimmying.

I drove in here, I called the police
and they came out and assisted me.

That one's there.

I don't know how to do it!

Yeah, I've changed a few
tyres in the past.

And I volunteer for the hard work.

That way,
when the serious things happen,

Shandora can do
the rest of the hard work.

We've got, we've got to
loosen up the...

Got to loosen it before we bring it
up. Before we put it all the way up.

When I'm working with Shandora,
it's always been very, you know,

honest and fun.

We work right together in order to
get the results that we need.

It's nice to see, you know,
the good side of the police

and it's nice that our police are
like this.

The work's not hard, but the...
It's the heat.

..the sweating is continuous.

Honestly, better than dealing with
some of the bad jobs.

Yeah, it's definitely good
when you have something that's

heartfelt
and you can help someone out.

Hopefully there's enough air
pressure in your spare.

Despite the officers' help,
the car's still not safe to drive.

Her spare's flat, erm, so we're just
going to follow her safely

across the causeway to, erm, make
sure that she can get air in it.

Policing's definitely a,
a hard experience.

Right.

We go through a lot of, er,
unsightly things sometimes,

and so, when you have those positive
moments, that's really what,

sort of, makes your day,
and makes it more impactful.

So, for me, it, it, it, sort of,
brings a smile to my face and

makes me feel a little bit happier
about what I'm doing each day.

psi, which should be fine for the
tyre.

Erm, it does have a warning

Tyre changing may not
be in the police training manual,

but, for officers like Shandora
and Bryden,

it's about doing whatever it
takes to keep their community safe.

Officer Woody is investigating
the case of a man

arrested on suspicion of theft.

Now he's visiting the store the man
is accused of stealing from.

We're going to probably need...

..we're probably going to
need a statement from you...

OK. ..if you're looking to give a
statement,

and then also check the CCTV maybe.

The shop owner himself was confident
that he'd identified him

straight after
the event as the person.

However, should the person deny
the offence and we go to court,

erm, that would require proof
that he'd done it intentionally.

Use of CCTV isn't as widespread
here as in the UK, but, luckily,

the store owner has it.

And does it show him...?
I take it, it shows him

fully leaving without offering any
payment and everything?

And you'll see me run after him.
Yep, all right.

Yeah, well, that's clearly him,
isn't it? Same, same hat.

He disappears out of picture there,

I take it he goes straight out
of the door, does he, at that point?

Yes, he comes through here and this
gentleman is serving a customer
and he goes past.

Straight out.

And then that's you going out
there after him?

Kind of!

The CCTV shows the man arrested
earlier leaving the store

and the owner following him.

I take it that you're CCTV is,
it gets stored, does it?

In case we needed to get a copy of
it. Yeah, 30 days.

Yep, OK, perfect.
Well sort that out as well.

We've got somebody who comes out
and collects that.

For minor offences like this,
police can only charge the suspect

if the victim requests it.

It's important that we get
a statement, for example,

to prove the offence,
because otherwise you could say

the shop owner was happy for me
to take it.

So, his statement is what
proves that they didn't have the

permission to take it.

Is it easier
for you to come to the st...

..to the station to give
the statement?

My car's in the garage, that's
why I was walking...

Right, OK, and you're working here
today, obviously, so... Yeah.

Yeah, we'll see if we can get, erm,

some paper to do it as a
handwritten statement from you. OK.

when you can come,
when it's convenient for you.

He's not got transport to come
to the station, where we would

usually type, type a statement up,

so we're going to have to get some
paper to do a handwritten statement.

It may seem like overkill
for the amount of, erm,

work involved for the,
for the amount that's been stolen.

However, there's still a victim,
at the end of the day, which is

the shop owner, erm, he doesn't want
these things to keep continuing.

I called him the following day to
arrange a time to take

the statement from him

and I got a feeling that he perhaps
didn't really want to do it now that

he'd calmed down, so I asked him
and he said he didn't any more.

With prosecution off the table...

How you doing? Good to see you
again. Yeah, nice to see you,
yeah. How's it going?

..Officer Woody's back at the store
to discuss other ways of dealing

with the suspect.

OK, so we had a chat on the phone
earlier today. Yeah.

And, erm, obviously explained to me

that you've calmed down a little bit
more since yesterday.

Yeah. Well, another option...

..would be for you to ban him
from the store anyway, erm,

that would mean that if he was to
return then he'd be put...

..he'd be trespassing
if he entered your store.

I think the chances are he won't
come and bother you again,

but at least this would be, sort of,
belt and braces for that, won't it?

OK. All right?

And if you steal once you're
on the premises as a trespasser,

then that's potentially a burglary
rather than just a shop theft,

so it's a more serious offence.

The shop owner said that it would be
suitable, he wanted to do that.

OK, great.

the alleged theft is now closed.
