In the east of the island,
Bermudan officer Peter-Paul Taylor

is out on patrol.

An ex-soldier,
he likes to keep busy.

I would describe my style
as very proactive.

I like to get in front of something
instead of chasing it.

I try to deal with as much as I see.

The members of the public know that,
yes, the police are out working

and any type of offences,
we're going to deal with it.

He's never at a loose end
for long when on shift.

He's chasing down a motorbike whose
rider doesn't want to be caught.

So, they failed to stop
at the stop sign.

Yeah, lost sight of him.

There's definitely a high suspicion

when people fail to stop
for the police.

Either they are carrying something
unlawful, they may have warrants.

They got away.

Hopefully they go home and
they think about their actions.

Rather than chase down offenders,

Officer Peter-Paul decides to wait
for them to come to him

by doing some speed checks...

It's not unlawful to overtake.

The lady gave me an excuse
to say that she was overtaking.

I don't believe that there is
an excuse for speeding.

This is something that she would
have to go to court for,

and the magistrate will determine
what a fine could be.

that Peter-Paul will hand out

in the next half an hour.

I don't worry about
not being popular.

for popularity contests.

I'm here to serve the public.

For Officer Peter-Paul, he's trying
to help people to help themselves.

The laws are there to protect them.

One year we had, I think, 12 or 13
fatalities, which is way too much.

I may have to give you CPR later on,

or we may have to call
your family member

to say you're seriously injured

or you're not going
to make it back home.

I think about it as if I can help
at least one person a day,

that's a win.

Another pet driving peeve
of Officer Peter-Paul

is those who take their eyes
off the road.

It is dangerous on a mobile phone,

while riding a bike
or driving a car.

You get distracted,
you're down on the phone,

as soon as you look up,
you're in the back of a vehicle.

Somebody's going to be
affected by you.

Dying in a rear collision
or having serious injuries.

So, think about that the next time
you're riding distracted.

Today, eagle-eyed officer Peter-Paul
is anything but distracted.

I saw someone using their cellphone

while they're operating
their vehicle.

So we're going to see
if we can catch up to him.

That's if this motorbike rider
doesn't also escape his clutches.

There are almost 30 Brits working
for the Bermuda Police Service.

Being here is something
they've warmed to.

I used to hate the British weather.
I used to hate it.

I would have about five layers on
when I was patrolling.

And here it's just, like,
seeing the turquoise waters,

it does lift my mood.

When I first got off the plane,

my husband and I both looked
at each other

and thought,
"How did we get this lucky?"

The beaches are by far
some of the best in the world.

The ocean here is phenomenal.

At 100m of horizontal visibility,
it's like swimming in gin.

It's beautiful.

Everywhere around the entire island.

You just never, never stop
looking at it, really.

And I still even get that now
that I just enjoy the view.

It's like a little bit of home,
as well, which...

..like, we have a Waitrose -
so, it's a bit of home,

but in paradise.

British born Coast Guard officer
James Woolf

warmed to living
in Bermuda long ago.

I was born in London,
grew up in Essex

and moved here when I was ten.

I went from being surrounded by
fields to being surrounded by water.

So, it was quite the culture shock.

When the Coast Guard
was first formed,

I applied, and as of May of last
year, I've been full-time.

My first time sailing was in the UK,
and you were in full wet suit -

you know, basically covered
head to toe.

And then I came out here
and you're just in swim shorts,

a T-shirt and a life jacket.

It's a very different lifestyle.

Right now we're in Caroline Bay,

which, as you can tell, is where a
lot of people keep their boats.

Part of our job is officer presence,

and we figure as people are leaving
their moorings to enjoy their day,

if they're mindful that we're
out and about

on the water because they see us,

then hopefully that plays
into how they handle themselves.

some military service with,

and I still need to be

check against the suspect's name.

The suspect believes that his sister

which means it's straight
to custody for him

and to the pound for his bike.

puts on additional foot patrols.

A check has revealed there
are warrants outstanding

for the owner of
a motor vehicle ahead.

that the owner of this vehicle

This lady had two fines
for uninsured vehicle

and an unlicensed vehicle,

which means that she was
previously stopped,

issued a ticket for unlicensed,
uninsured vehicle.

She went to court. Now, what people
do is start to pay on it,

and then they stop -
and I don't think people realise

that once you stop, that's when a
warrant is issued for your arrest.

And it's not small change
that the driver owes the court.

You have one from
31st March 2022, 750,

and you have another one
from 1st June 2016

for unlicensed motorcar,
same offence, for 1,000

So your total is 1,750.

The officers have a duty
to arrest the woman

and come to an arrangement
to settle her debt.

You can either pay it or you can go
to court tomorrow morning.

So, you'll have to stay overnight
at Hamilton Police Station

and you will have to go
to court tomorrow morning

and you'll have to ask the judge
for time to pay.

But there's a problem - the woman
has a pressing parental matter.

Chin, her children are
home unsupervised. Mm-hm.

She's going to go home,
get her children

and have to put them in the car
and make her way down to pay it.

She had informed us that she went
to pick up groceries

and her kids were at home alone.

Now, that's one of these situations
where we have to use our discretion.

She said they were young children,
so it was not like they were of age

where they can kind of supervise
themselves for long periods of time,

and the kids in that moment
were more important

than transporting her in a police
car to Hamilton Police Station

for those types of warrants.

We would usually affect an arrest,
however, based on the circumstances,

more importantly, your children
being at home by themselves,

so I'm going to accept you and
I'm going to take your word for it

that you're going to go to the
station. I have your information,

I have your address,
and I will check.

All right. No problem.

We don't really take excuses, but
she seemed as if she was genuine.

It is nice to have discretion
as a police officer,

because it allows you to still treat
people like humans.

This is real life and these are real
people that you deal with.

I use my discretion quite a bit.

It gives people that
fresh perspective

on what the Bermuda Police Service
is doing.

I checked up on her and the fines
were paid like she said she would.

It gives you that sort of
encouragement

to say, like,
"OK, I did the right thing."

In Hamilton, Officer Peter-Paul
has brought into custody the suspect

arrested for having an outstanding
court fine

for driving while disqualified.

You've got an outstanding balance
of $300.

The suspect now accepts
that he owes the court

and if he wants to get out,
he needs to pay up.

I've authorised your detention
for the purpose

of executing this warrant.

And as I just mentioned to you
before, for you to leave here today,

you have to pay $300.

Fail to do so, you go to court
on Monday at 9:30am.

Without $300 in his pocket,
the suspect will go to the cells -

but first, there's the vital
task of searching him.

Doing it properly is essential
police procedure.

Searching someone
is definitely important,

for...they could have knives
or other types of weapons

on their person concealed
that, once handcuffs are off,

they may try to use it on officers
