The police service in Bermuda
marches on its stomach.

Officers Chris Douglas
and Krishna Singh

are getting breakfast at the start
of an eight-hour shift.

Morning, guys.

But this is no ordinary food truck.

Officer Krishna set it up
as a sideline to his police work.

Trini is short for Trinidad.

We have great Trinidad food here -
rotis, curries

and what they call a double.

I'm actually from Trinidad.
I was an accountant in Trinidad.

When I came to Bermuda,
on vacation, I never left.

I'll have a burger with bacon,
no cheese, lettuce and tomato.

Yeah, and half fry. Half fry? Yeah.

I've been here almost 40 years.
Almost 40 years.

So I decided to become a police
officer, for a short time.

And lo and behold,
I've been there 27 years now.

I really enjoy it.

A double is like two pastry,
like, chapati, about that size,

with chickpea in the middle
and sauces.

It sounds simple,
but it tastes out of this world.

Bermuda's special location

means that it's a melting pot
of different cultures.

Bermuda, it's amazing.

I mean, it genuinely is unique.

We are a very small island,
isolated in the Atlantic,

but it's beautiful.

Officer Chris appreciates the
benefits of his partner's sideline.

somebody who owns this

cos then you can kind of put in
your order, like, in advance,

you can get special attention...

I have been a police officer
for 11 years.

We're a small community.

A lot of us tend to know most of,
like, other Bermudians.

It's a different style of policing.

You know, you have to be polite,
you have to kind of be friendly.

I love Bermuda.

That's why I kind of wanted
to get into public service.

I just felt that that was, like,
my calling.

Just giving back and police is just
where I'm at, and I love it.

With a huge influx of different
nationalities comes money.

With around one in every 77 people
here having millionaire status,

that's the highest rate
of any country.

But alongside those
living the good life

comes challenges for some
less well-off locals.

Officers Chris and Krishna
are on their way

to check on a government-owned
property.

There's been reports a squatter
may have taken up residence.

So what's going on is that we have
a trespasser on the property.

So we're here with the park staff
to basically just look,

search around the area,
see if we can engage with the person

and just let them know of the
offence that they're committing.

To me, my fear when going
to evict someone from a property

is just the unknown factor.

You don't know how hostile
they're going to be.

Is there more than one person there?
Is there three or four guys there?

What are we going to encounter?
We just do not know.

And that's why I try to take
a good handful of officers with me

when I go to this kind of job.

When was the last time you
were up here? Was it last week?

Officers Chris and Krishna
and fellow officer James Ely

are accompanying the guardian
of the property, Mr Koffi,

who wants rid of any squatters.

They don't know who,
if anyone, will be inside the house.

is that the cleaner is going
to come up, clean up the place,

and we are going to board
the place up.

supposed to be here

because you are only
squatting or trespassing.

My concern is where
are they going to go?

and this is the first time
a few of us have actually
interacted with them.

whether or not he was
going to be violent or not,

or if he was even going to be here.

He is actually trespassing,
but we've given him a chance to,

you know, to leave on his own.

We tried not to arrest him,
but he is in a tight spot right now

and we don't want to make things
worse for him, you know.

I tried to advise him that
there are shelters out there
and they can take you in.

We tried to point him
in the right direction.

It's a nice property.

They are working on it.

Well, tomorrow we plan to come back
here and hopefully he will be gone.

If he doesn't leave,
then we have no choice

but to effect the arrest
for trespassing.

Having given the man 24 hours
to vacate the property,

officers Krishna and Chris
will need to return in the morning.

With summer season in full swing,

thousands of sun-seekers pass
through Bermuda's airport every day.

Working alongside the human
officers are the police dogs.

Hey, good boy.

Hi, Creg. How you doing? Good.

Meet Roni and his handler,
Officer Robin McNabb,

who was born on the island.

I've been in the police
for ten years.

I was working for a long time
as a graphic designer.

I had family members
who've been in the police

and I've always liked
to help people.

And I saw it advertised that
they were going to be looking

for Bermudians, so I thought,
why not, I'll give it a go.

Come here.

I got into the canine unit
three years ago.

I've always had a dog in my life.

They don't care what you look like,
they don't care how you're feeling,

they don't care what you've done,
they just love you.

There's a happiness
that comes from that.

And when I got offered the position,
that was my goal.

The dog that I have now
and the bond between us

is like that's my partner.

That's my guy.

He's a German shepherd mixed
with a Belgian Malinois,

so he's loyal and crazy at the
same time, depending on the day!

With 12 flights coming in
from the US every day,

sniffer dog Roni is primed to check
for any suspicious cases.

His favourite thing
is to run on the conveyor belt

as the suitcases are coming along.

He loves it.

Roni is a dual-purpose police dog.

So he is a detection dog
first and foremost.

He can detect drugs, erm,
firearms, ammunition.

Sometimes we'll stand there
as I'm waiting for it to come out

and you can see he's getting
really excited to start,

and then he'll keep looking at
me like, "Can I go? Can I go?"

Illegal drugs is a big deal
in Bermuda.

It's something that
we're constantly fighting

and we're constantly trying
to keep up with new types of drugs

and new ways of people
bringing it in.

I think it's vital for us
to be at the airport as well as,

you know, the dog
potentially finding drugs

that are brought in
for intent to supply.

Sometimes it's good
to have the police there
as a sign of reassurance

and to show people
that we're out there,

we are paying attention,
we are looking.

So it might deter someone
from taking that route
of bringing drugs in.

A lot of the dogs we get are
from Holland and that's how
they begin their training.

So when I give commands to Roni,
I give his commands in Dutch
rather than English.

SHE SPEAKS DUTCH

And then it's also good if we
speak a different language
than people on the street,

so they're not giving him commands,
he's only going to listen to us.

The airport is also British officer
Geordie's main patrol patch.

He works in tandem with the dogs
in the search for illegal imports.

It's legal up there so literally
every single Air Canada flight

that comes in,
there's something on it.

In the last two days,
there's been nothing.

I'm not a big fan of dogs.
I don't say I dislike them.

But I like working with them.

The canines that both customs
and police have are great.

And I'll say one thing,
they do their work very well.

When I work I'm with my dog.

Every day, all day, it's just me
and him in the car.

Usually, handlers work alone,
we don't have a human partner,

so he listens to me sing all day.

SHE HUMS A TUNE

And I don't even think
about the bond, really,

until I realise what
I'm noticing about my dog

that other people wouldn't notice,

like cues that he's giving me
that people wouldn't notice

and I'm like, I really know,
you know, I know this dog,

I know what he's feeling
at the moment

or what he's expecting at the
moment, and that's pretty cool.

The typical alert when they find
something is to sit or freeze.

Come on.

Erm, and that's typically
what Roni will do.

But I have found in the airport
when he's on a moving carousel,

he'll kind of get a little excited.

Coming through, sorry.

But he definitely makes it known.

Roni has taken an interest
in one particular bag,

just off a flight from Florida.

He's alerted to this bag.
It fell off the, erm...

..the belt by itself.

I'm just going to let customs know
to check that bag.

I got a bag.
Right, OK, which one?

Erm, it's on the ground, actually.

It fell off and it's down
on the ground there.

Yeah.

So, we would normally
just put it back on anyway
if something falls off

and then we will let them,
when they go through,

let them know to do
a secondary search.

Sometimes, suitcases
will not get picked up

if they've seen the canine
in the arrivals hall.

I don't want to be too obvious
if someone's looking.

That's a good boy.

Robin needs to find the owner
of the suspect suitcase,

get them stopped and have
the bag's contents searched.

In north-east Hamilton,
Officer Peter-Paul Taylor

is two hours into a busy
traffic patrol shift.

Excuse me,
he's got to fasten his helmet.

I do like being out
on the road, patrolling.

Officer Peter-Paul
never misses an opportunity

to pull out the rule book
when it comes to safety.

Showing that the police are out,
we're showing a presence,

doing our best to deter
criminal activity,

deter traffic offences,

so that everyone can make it home
safe at the end of the day.

Police are out, we're working,
and if you're...

Any type of offences,
we're going to deal with it.

I've been a police officer
for about two and a half years.

Before that, I was in the
military for about a decade.

ARV1 Oscar ten, five,
can I have an expiry for Bravo...

Next on his hitlist,

eagle-eyed officer Peter-Paul
has spotted a potential offence.

So the cycle that's in front of me,

I can't see an expiry date
on the sticker.

Ten four,
vehicle stopped outside of Miles.

So the vehicle should have the
sticker on it by the minister.

How you doing? I'm Constable Taylor,
I work for the tactical division.

The reason why I'm stopping you
is when I was behind you
at Albuoy's Point,

I could see the sticker here,
the latest one is December 2018.

I called the operations

and they tell me the bike
expired back in 2018.

Do you have your
driver's licence on you?

All vehicles must
be examined annually

and display a licence sticker.

Officer Peter-Paul is enforcing
that to the letter.

Just do me a favour, just
so that the vehicle's off the road,

just push the bike on here and I can
move my vehicle down, all right?

OK.

All right, so for that you're going
to be issued tickets because your
bike's unlicensed and uninsured.

OK, well, I'm being told that
it's unlicenced and uninsured.

So, I'm not going to argue with you.

I'm going to issue you both tickets

and then you can go to court
and explain to the magistrate

that you didn't have proof
of the insurance.

OK, well, you can't prove it
to me right now,

so I'm going to issue
both tickets, all right? OK.

I'd describe my style
as very proactive.

I believe that I'm fair
and professional.

I take everyone,
each person with their own merit.

Last time it was able to be
on the road was December of 2018,

so when I checked
with police operations,

that's what they confirmed -

that the bike does not have
a licence and is not insured.

When did you insure it?

January of this year?

So I guess because I can't
see proof of it now,

I'm not saying that you're lying,

I'm just saying I don't
have the proof.

He's given the information and this
is what we're going to deal with,

and any excuses someone has, I say,

"You are more than welcome
to explain it to the magistrate

"but this is what we're
going to deal with here."

All right, sir,
could I have your signature here?

This is the ticket that
the cycle is not licensed.

And then because
it's two separate offences,

it's another ticket
because of the insurance.

When Officer Peter-Paul
is on the case,

it's a double whammy
for this driver.

OK, so this is the one
for no third party insurance.

So you have to go to court.
If you don't go to court,

the magistrate will issue
a warrant for you.

Carry the ticket
and carry your insurance, please.

For this one, it's a $250 fine.

If you choose to pay it,
you don't have to go to court.

If you choose not to pay it,
then you go to court the same day.

People that make bad decisions

are the ones that make
the roads dangerous.

It's a good asset
to be very observant

to what's happening around me
and to actually making a difference.

In Bermuda's main police station,

the eviction of a squatter

or ten minutes to come out.

is summoning extra manpower.

another unit to attend to assist us.

So, basically the arrest unit,
just in case things pop off

and we want extra manpower,

just so that we can make sure
everything's OK.

With the team assembled,

they head off to assist with
enforcing the eviction notice.

Hopefully, he will heed the warning
and leave on his own.

We don't know what we're going
to face up against.

Lately, we have faced weapons
and machetes and knives,

and we've got to be really
prepared for these things, you know,

because we don't know what
we're going to encounter.

Back at the airport, police dog Roni

has alerted his handler, Officer

It gives us a reason to just
take a second look at that bag,

and you never know what
you're going to find.

The bag has been claimed
and now it's being searched.

The owner, an American woman,
has come to Bermuda

for her daughter's wedding,
along with her mother.

They sniffed me.

And I went off,
I lit up everything before...

Their important family holiday
could be in jeopardy

and it's been a bumpy ride so far.

First the electric on the plane
didn't work,

then the plane didn't weigh right,
so we had to taxi back.

This is my daughter's wedding,
she had so much trouble.

We usually come to Bermuda by ship,
by far much better way to come.

And now, finally...

It's difficult these days because a
lot of the people coming on flights

are coming from places
where marijuana's legal.

I'm not a canine handler,
but they play a huge role

in the prevention
of the importation of drugs.

Very few days go by when there's
a canine working at the airport

that it doesn't alert
to the presence

of a drug in somebody's case.

That doesn't mean to say
they have it.

I trust that the dog...

He's going to indicate when he
smells what he's supposed to smell.

But you just... There's so many
factors, but it's good to check.

After a tense wait, the passengers
can breathe easy again.

Police and customs officers
find nothing illegal,

so they're free to go.

Since the eviction notice
was served,

the man's whereabouts
are still a mystery.

Officer Chris Douglas is on patrol.

Being on the beat, as we call it,
walking around,

for me, it's just the people.

I love the people,
especially in the city of Hamilton.

He's with Officer Carol Skerrit,

known for her strict style
keeping the drivers...

It's a commercial bay and the back
wheels are clearly in an area

that's for commercial parking.

So, Dougie, are you going to
ticket or are you leaving it?

Erm...

I don't care. I do my job.

That's why I've been named as a
bad person, because I ticket them.

Sometimes I try to give
people breaks but, I mean,
still the law is the law.

So normally I would try
to give a person a caution,
but it is what it is.

What I really enjoy
as a community officer,

cos I'm a parish constable
in the city of Hamilton,

just when people come to me
with issues that they're having,

I just get sort of, like, this
great feeling that I'm helping.

To prove just how small
a place Bermuda is...

That's the guy from earlier
that we had to deal with.

We are a very small island
and you do know mostly everyone.

Hey. We were looking for you earlier
this morning to make sure you
were all right with everything.

You guys went back down there?
Yeah, we did.

And they actually removed any of
your belongings were still in there.

Yeah, so they actually removed it
and they're going to
put it by the wall.

We're just a little concerned
about his wellbeing,

so we made some suggestions
as to some places that

some charitable organisations

they might be able
to do an assessment,

cos he might actually need
more than just a place to stay

and hopefully he takes the advice
and hopefully his situation
will get a little bit better.
