and it's really humid today.

The reality is, there are

I didn't really expect the cows

In Bermuda today, officers race
to deal with an urgent threat...

We're still trying to get some more
information

as to what the report is.

Weapons get involved -
kitchen knives, machetes.

..they go to great depths
in diving rescue practice.

Training today is going to be
pretty intense.

..and they get hot under the collar
when stuck behind bars.

We are magnetically
locked inside this gate.

Officers Moya and Justin
are starting a 12-hour shift with

a patrol in the east of the island.

Moya. Yeah.

It's too hot.

It is too hot!

Hey, can you imagine wearing

this vest in this heat all day long
without the AC?

Yeah. That would...that would be
a struggle.

It's not just hot, it's humid
and hot.

Moya is Jamaican, she's been
policing here for three years.

The reason why I wanted to be a cop,

apart from me just wanting
to be a sniper...

..I've always wanted to be a sniper,
but I can't shoot a gun yet.

I'm going to learn.

I just always wanted to be a person
who makes a difference

in the community.

With around 20,000 registered
motorbikes and scooters

on such a small island,

combatting bike theft is
a major task for the police.

We're going to have a look
in a known spot

where stolen cycles get dumped.

It'll be in the bush
right up ahead of us.

In the past, we've found stolen
cycles here,

and the persons who drop
the bikes off, they know that police

come in this area now and check,
so they're probably more mindful

and probably change their spot,
but it never hurts to still check.

Nothing new has changed.

But in making his own
escape from the bushes,

Officer Justin has found
himself caught...

..on a sharp branch.

Yeah, the hat caused him to hit
his head.

It's bleeding. Yeah.

I've been assaulted
while working due to just, er,

making arrests and dealing with
members of the public.

You know, in regards to
hitting my head on a branch,

pretty much the first time.

I thought my hat took...took
most of the hit, but I guess not.

I guess this is the job that you
signed up for, right?

Yeah. Even if it's minor.

Safely in the car, officers Moya
and Justin get a call to attend

threats being made between
neighbours.

Er, he said they're
threatening to hurt her.

Over 15 minutes away, the high-risk
call requires a high-speed response.

We're still trying to get some more

information and some more clarity
as to what the report is.

So, threats, threats to harm,
something like that.

Yes, so it could be threats to harm,

threats to cause damage, kill.

Disputes can get really bad.

They can get to the point

where people are assaulted,
weapons get involved,

kitchen knives, machetes, bats
and all kind of different things.

Echo two to Oscar,
confirm the suspects, due on scene.

The tensions are so high and they
resort to violence.

Are there any weapons involved
at this time?

In that moment, you have to assume
the worst.

Working hard to ensure
that Bermuda's neighbourhoods

remain safe are almost 400 officers
that make up the police service.

Top cop is
Commissioner Darrin Simons.

So, this is where I stay,
this is where I live.

I've been living
here for probably about 25 years.

His family has been on the island
for generations.

I'd like to show you the view.

That's just incredibly relaxing.

On the weekend, when you're having
a barbecue or something like that,

kicking back your feet,
enjoying a beverage,

I'm really grateful to have,
you know,

raised my kids in this area,
in this neighbourhood.

This is home.

I think about what I do
in the context of my neighbourhood,

so I deliver policing services
for a community that is very near

and dear to my heart.

Bermuda is also dear to
Officer Eddie Smith, who's enjoying

the pleasures of an idyllic
lunch break with his colleague Jen.

It's a little warm but, I mean,
we're under the shade,

you're not taking
on the blistering heat.

Yeah, I definitely feel lucky,
you know,

blessed to live in an island
like this, you know.

How do you put a value to this?

Right. This is stunning.

Their job on patrol today is
to show a reassuring police

presence for those out in the sun.

It's a Saturday, weekend,
so just got to pay heightened

attention to the area beaches.
Height of summer

so got a lot of tourists in town.

Do our best to stay safe
and keep cool.

Enjoying the Bermudian
great outdoors is one of the finest

parts of the job for Officer Eddie.

I need to be outdoors, I need
to enjoy the ocean, the breeze,

the trees, the people.

It's beautiful,
that's what Bermuda is.

The ocean is always exceptional.

I can listen to it, I love it.

They've arrived
at Cooper's Island Nature Reserve,

an area that contains
some of the country's best beaches.

We could do a foot patrol all
the way in. Yeah, we could do that.

Or you're not feeling it.
No, no, I'm... We can do that.

It's a closed-off area, you cannot
take motor vehicles there.

It's a nature reserve,

and it's important to protect
what's down here. You know,

you have to be concerned about the
fumes, if your car breaks down and

the oil leaks all over the place,
and we should all respect that.

Access for beach-goers should only
be through a pedestrian entrance.

So it's a bit of a walk.
It's warm, but it's gorgeous,

and it's just a great spot to be
able to patrol.

Immediately, they find an illegally
parked car

right next to one of
the main beaches.

Shocking to find a vehicle in there.

Officer Eddie calls in
to identify the owner.

Echo four, Oscar five.

Check the details, please,
for a private motor car.

I'll make some enquiries, um,
with people out on the beach.

With no driver details available,
officers Eddie and Jen must

trudge through the sand in search of
the car's owner in 35 degree heat.

Good afternoon, ladies, how is
everyone? All right. Good, good.

You wouldn't happen to know
who's operating this car, do you?

No, I don't. No?

I have a strong feeling it's going

to be gone by the time we come back.
Mm.

They can somehow miss it.

They might be over on the other
beach, on the other side.

There's another little path
towards there.

Yeah, and they walked right past,
so it's not them. Yeah.

Oh, I want to get in that water
so bad!

I won't tell.

Who is lazy enough to drive
their car here?

It's brutal, direct sun.

But we have to wear Bermuda shorts,

so you have the shorts
and the socks.

Afternoon, sir. Good afternoon,
how you doing, chief?

Tell me, you wouldn't know whose
that Kia is out there, would you?

No, I don't know. No? No.

Yeah, unfortunately nobody's really
forthcoming with information.

Nobody really knows
who the vehicle belongs to,

so we do have some options.

We could call a tow truck or just
leave a ticket on the vehicle.

Offended by the offence, Officer
Eddie is keen to tow not ticket.

We had the concern of whether or
not we were going to just ticket

the person - and that's fine -
but it didn't move the vehicle,

that was the most important thing
to me.

The car needed to get out of there.

But he checks with his boss to ask
which would be appropriate.

Boss, it's Eddie calling.

We're down at Cooper's Island
and there's a car in here.

Trying to figure out the next
course of action to deal with this.

Erm, yeah, that's going to require
me walking back to the car

and coming back
but ticketing, it doesn't...

I mean, yeah, we can ticket it.

I would've towed it, though.

Just means going back to the car.

Yeah.

Their inspector's decision to ticket
means they must make the hot walk

back up the hill to retrieve
their ticket book from the car.

A chamois cloth thing, so I can pop
it in there.

Phew!

I don't think I'm walking back here.

Nine hours into his shift,

the heat's finally gotten
to Officer Eddie, so he's taking

the cooler option - to drive
back to the illegally parked car.

Put the booty on it, look at that.

You have to learn to use your brain.

Ah.

walking back down there.

Luckily, there's an important
operational reason why

Officer Eddie needs his car.

Once I have to do the execution
of my duty, which could've

gone in any direction,
it might've resulted in an arrest.

I still need my vehicle, so that was
part of the reason

I actually drove in to execute
that part of the duty,

because you just don't know where
it's going to go,

so you should be prepared.

But Officer Eddie's plan
comes with a catch.

I noticed
when I was closing the gate,

as it closed completely, that there
was some type of sealing mechanism.

I just didn't put it
together in that moment.

Unbeknownst to the officers,
the gate has

an automatic locking mechanism
that slammed shut behind them.

Why did I close it all the way?

It doesn't even make sense.

The police service,
along with the coastguard,

help to make sure
those on the water are safe.

Do you think you could
slow down a bit?

Strictly five knots, that's all.

And that includes policing above
and below the water.

The scuba team could be called
to drug-trafficking incidents

and even murder.

Today, the team is doing vital
monthly training.

Training today is going to be
pretty intense.

We're going to do
our 500-metre swim.

I know everyone is dreading it but
you're definitely not getting out

of this. It's only going to take,
what, 16 to 20 minutes to do that?

Once we get back after that,
you guys can dip off

and do your refresher stuff, that'll
get you your dive for the morning.

19-year-old Gaby
is a potential new reservist.

I'm really excited,
obviously, about going for the dive.

I haven't been
diving in over a year,

so just to be able to dive with
people who are experienced,

I kind of feel like I'm being
mentored in the best way possible.

Brit officer Hugo Benziger has
worked for the Bermudian police

for two years.

I'm 53 and I've got to
be as good as the 25-year-olds.

Over three decades Gaby's senior,

he's proving he's still got what it
takes for a 500-metre swim.

It's hard.

I will never admit that
to the people in my team...

..but it's good fun, and once a
month I'm out there

and giving it my best.

Next, the real task in hand -
to gain experience

in underwater recovery, diving at
depths of 20 metres.

Your recovering an unresponsive
diver from the bottom,

bringing them up to the surface,

so that is going to be your mission.

Well, this is pretty heavy.

The weighted dummy Officer Hugo has
saved many times before.

You see, um,
it's just a very lifelike version.

This is about 170lb normally. When
she's wet, she's a bit more.

So, yeah, that's what we use,
part of our equipment.

As much as the water in Bermuda is,
you know, beautiful and it's

often crystal clear, we don't
necessarily dive those places

to find things, we have to dive
the places that aren't as beautiful.

The most serious crime I've had
to deal with on the water is murder.

The water can be a way
for some people to try

and get rid of the body.

That's why we have that capacity
and capability to search,

whether it's for a weapon
or a knife, hand or a body.

Trainee reserve Gaby is tasked with
the tough job of locating

the body for the more experienced
divers to recover.

She's wearing a blackout mask
to replicate the zero visibility

of a murky night search
that police divers get thrown into.

It really put me
out of my comfort zone

because when you first go in,
I...I get a little overwhelmed.

Probably the most challenging part

would be putting on the
blackout mask,

just because you feel
more at ease when you can see

what's around you instead of
depending on,

like, your sense of touch.

With no visibility,
trainee Gaby has managed to deploy

the simple device called a peanut to
guide those on the surface

to where the body is, a task in real
life that Hugo has known.

Finding a body, recovering a body,

in itself can be traumatic,
absolutely.

It does
and absolutely can hit you sideways

when you're not expecting it.

You're talking about somebody's life
and trying to give them closure,

so it's important to do in a very
professional and respectful way.

Rookie Gaby has completed
the training and risen to the task.

So, Gaby,
we just saw her first time today,

and that first few 30 seconds,
first minute,

I just noticed a little
bit of just trepidation about her.

Yeah, everything was good.

I really enjoyed today
but I was getting very nervous,

but I will say that it's just been
a really good experience.

Officers Moya and Justin are
responding to

a call about threats
made between neighbours.

They've received an update
that no weapons are involved,

but Officer Moya has some useful
intel about the alleged aggressor.

When that call came in and they
mentioned the name,

I'm like, "I know this guy."

Bermuda's a very small island.

Everybody knows everybody.

And when you know a person and they
feel comfortable with you,

it makes your job a lot easier

in getting that situation calm,

and being able to say, "Hey,
walk with me, talk with me."

The gentleman here is making
a complaint that another gentleman

in the building - another
occupant who resides here as well -

is making threats, wanting to fight
him as well as some offensive words.

You have the option to have him
prosecuted,

and you have your next option, where
he'll be spoken to and warned.

Everything is going to be
documented, regardless.

You can also go another avenue
of getting a protection order.

Basically, his complaint was that
this guy had threatened him,

pretty much he said meet him
outside, which he took as a threat.

So, I'm just trying to protect
my family right now.

And you guys both live on the same
property. And we stay...

INDISTINCT SHOUTING

Is that him? Yeah, that's him there.

All right, so...
So we'll speak to him.

Hopefully, we can come to some
sort of agreement.

I would say just go to the side,
just stay separate from him.

I realised it was indeed the person
I was thinking it to be,

which assisted me in being able
to speak to him.

But I haven't done nothing,

so there's no need for me to
hide anything. You know who I am.

I try avoiding confrontation.
I try...I try avoiding it.

I'm not that type of person.

The only reason why I did is
because he keep going to my wife.

Stop saying something to my wife.
Come to me.

It's just giving him the opportunity

to say his piece.

See, you've to give people

the opportunity to say what they
want to say.

He felt offended because you have
said some words.

I said, "Meet me outside." Yeah. I
said, yeah. He did say you said that

but... I wasn't saying,

"Meet me outside," as in
a threatening manner.

My daughter was right there in the
kitchen. I'm not going to sit down

and argue with somebody in front
of my daughter.

So, in his case,

he's saying he didn't mean it
as a threat.

He just wanted to take it outside
so it's away from his child.

So, it's obvious that you two have

had some miscommunication,
misunderstanding.

Honestly, I don't speak to him.

Right. I...I don't talk to him.

Have you guys ever tried mediation?
Honestly? No.

At that point, I thought of
mediation because if you guys

were friends, there's something you

probably need to talk about that
you haven't spoke about

that is causing you guys
to no longer be friends.

With officers Moya and Justin's calm
approach, the alleged aggressor

and complainant agreed
to take up mediation.

Just take our advice.

illegally parked beach-goer's car,

ready in hand.

The mystery beachgoer is
back at their car.

They're still going to get
a ticket.

Did you have a reason for bringing
your car in here?

The gate was open.

Well, there's massive signs
all along that fencing that say

this is a nature reserve,

you're not supposed to have
motorised vehicles in here.

There is a $75 dollar ticket.
If you do not pay it,

they will issue a warrant for
your arrest, which you do not want.

All right, have a good day.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

Mm-hm.

But as officers Eddie and Jen
and the ticketed driver attempt

to exit the nature reserve,
they hit a bit of a barrier.

Oh, my God! That is stuck!

Oh. Are they opening it now?

Let's hope we're not stuck in here.

It's really not opening.

EDDIE LAUGHS

It's...it's...it's latched.

Oh, you know what it is,
it's a magnetic lock.

So we're locked in here?
Pretty much.

The gate that Officer Eddie had
pulled across behind them earlier

is now very firmly locked shut.

Us coming in and shifting
the gate...

..put that manual to the magnet

and now it is sealed, which means
we'll be camping tonight.

Oh! Cannot make this up!

In that moment, yeah, there was
definitely a realisation that

it's locked.
I can't find a mechanism to open it.

We're going to have to
call for help,

which kind of causes the head
to drop, the shoulders to rise.

Body temperature comes up as well,
yeah.

You get a little warm
thinking about that.

But finding out who might have
a key at a weekend is no easy thing.

We're stuck, but I don't know who
we're supposed to call.

I think the fire department
has access.

I'm going to call Comm Ops

and see which direction they can
give us for, er, getting out.

Help us, we're
trapped inside of Cooper's Island!

and I probably felt the heat

because I was the one that got us

I got to sweat it out, literally.

Bermuda is made up of nine parishes.

Going east to west,

the western end of the island forms
a bit of a fish hook.

The dockyard is effectively
the tip of the fish hook

and it sort of swings around.

We've got Somerset, Southampton
and then comes into this landmass,

the main city of Hamilton, fairly
densely populated, and carries up.

You've got St George's, St David's

toward the eastern end of the
island.

Also in the east of the island
is Tucker's Town,

a gated peninsula
dubbed Billionaires' Row.

This is now the richer part
of the island.

Fresh from resolving
the dispute between neighbours,

officers Moya and Justin
are back on patrol.

So, I know at some point it was
said, I can't confirm it,

that even Oprah was
interested on a piece of property.

I heard that, too. Yeah.

It's crazy the amount of money
that's really here in Bermuda. Yeah.

It's a chance to see how
the other half live.

Every single house in this area...

Mm. ..has the most amazing views.

And everybody have access to a
private beach - which I would love!

Houses here can
go for as much as $25 million.

Work every day, you know, if you do
a lot of overtime... Even then,

you cannot afford one of these
houses.

And then, you know,
you get a group of,

like, maybe five officers together
and you house share.

The house share.

The only other way that you're going
to own one of these houses... Mm.

..you're going to have to get
a sugar mama. Yes.

It's been almost one hour
since officers Eddie

and Jen got stuck behind the gate
of the nature reserve.

We are magnetically
locked inside this gate,

and we will be waiting
until fire service or parks,

whoever has access to this code,
can come and get us free.

I've actually been stuck in Cooper's
Island behind this gate before.

Um, my sister's wedding.

When we got to the gate, it was
locked, we couldn't get out,

so we were waiting, like,
an hour and a half.

Ended up missing, like,
the beginning of the reception.

This has never happened to me

cos I've never been in here inside
a vehicle, so this is my first time,

and I am not annoyed by this
at all. Not one little bit.

Even for an officer of
Eddie's experience,

every shift can still
contain a life lesson.

This is definitely a moment
to remember.

I will not forget that
magnetic gate.

Do not close it all the way.

This is rookie move.

Yeah. This is...this is new boy,
schoolboy, baby boy move.

Whoo! And I've got nobody else
to blame but...but myself.

Finally, after a long wait
in the afternoon sun,

the man with the key arrives
to release the sheepish officers

from their self-enforced
captivity.

I always say if you go in,
you should know your way out.

We're finally free.

It's been
a...a relaxing evening, for sure,

stuck behind the gate
in this, er, beautiful paradise.

It's a little stressful for me,

being as I'm the one who
closed the gate

and put us on, er, restrictive
duties.

But I am happy it's over.

It was hot, yeah.

The moral of the story, I don't
like being locked behind bars, so...

Ha-ha! ..it's a good thing
I'm on this side of the law.

My sergeant was behind a motorcycle
that's been stolen.
