It's tough.
And it's really humid today.

The reality is, there are
challenges.

..crime-busting in a place where
anything can happen.

I didn't really expect the cows
to run out the gate.

Uh-oh.

Going to great lengths
to catch criminals...

With summer tourists
arriving in droves...

..this is peak season for
the police.

On police business in Bermuda,

there's a raid to
save some puppies...

Hello? Animal control, you need to
come to the door now or

we're going to make a forced entry.

..a hunt for a rogue tour guide
at a beauty spot...

The person we're looking for
is not here,

so we can walk around and just
see if he's down further.

..and a battle of the sexes
at a broken-down car.

It's OK, Jen, let the men work.

I know, apparently!

A lot of people assume, because I'm
female, I don't know how to do it.

Ready?

Central to the work of the Bermuda
Police Service is the K-9 unit.

Today, it's search practice
for police dog Romy.

We'll hide the drugs, and then
I'll either let the dog off lead

and let him hunt for the drugs,
or I'll keep him on lead

and practise searching the room.

Bermudan officer Robin MacNabb's
love of dogs led her

to become a handler three years ago.

You have to treat them with respect,
you have to treat them with love.

When I work, I'm with my dog.

Every day, all day,
it's just me and him in the car.

Usually handlers work alone,
we don't have a human partner.

So he listens to me
curse people out and stuff.

Come on, buddy.

Is he pooping? Yeah.

Ah, no!

Come on, no.

You might as well let him finish.
Ugh.

I take it he didn't poop
this morning? No. Huh.

But it's not just drugs
that the dogs unit must sniff out.

We will get called to a prowler

or if there is a break-in
in progress.

If we hear that there's a 1045,
which is a police pursuit,

we'll start making our way
towards that area.

We do a lot of pre-planned warrants.

Today, there's a warrant
being executed at a house suspected

of illegally breeding pit bulls.

My worst fear,
going on a dog warrant,

finding the dogs hurt
or ill or neglected.

I've been to one where the dogs
looked like skeletons

and they were so weak.

It breaks my heart.

I've, you know,
been in tears before.

There are eight police officers
and dog wardens briefed

at the location, ready to go.

The issue is that one illegal
litter of six can

turn into 100 dogs pretty quickly.

And the last thing you want
is feral pit bulls.

It's a small island, and especially
for restricted breeds,

you can have these breeds,
but you have to make sure

you're following certain conditions,
like have an outdoor kennel,

have secure fencing to make sure
that restricted breeds especially

aren't getting out and wandering
and, you know, hurting people,

killing other people's animals.

You have to apply for a special
licence, and they will come and

inspect your home and make sure that
you have the right requirements.

But if you can do that, then you can
absolutely have a restricted dog.

But getting a licence is expensive.

Without one, it risks a raid
from the police.

First, the police need to locate,
with the landlord's help,

where the dogs actually are.

Has anybody spoken to you?

Yeah, the dog warden
spoke to me.

All right, cool, no worries.

I told them, the dogs are
downstairs in the apartment.

Just want to make sure
you understand what's going on.

That was the landlord, and his
advice is that the dogs in question

are located downstairs,
in a lower apartment.

So now they're just trying to make
contact with any of the occupants.

Hello, animal control, you need to
come to the door now

or we're going to make
a forced entry.

Somebody's going to need to open
this door pretty quickly.

OK!

We just need someone to open
the door.

I'm going to give you this warrant.

And we're also here for the puppies.

We're here for all the dogs.

You want the dog?
That's the dog.

Inside the house, they discover
six pit bull puppies,

kept with their mother.

They're probably not eight weeks
yet, I wouldn't think,

because they're still here.

They're super-sweet,
that's the hard part.

It's all right, buddy.

Despite Officer Robin's worst fears,

the puppies have been kept
in good conditions.

The house is fine,
they're being taken care of.

They're clean and they look
really healthy.

I didn't go through the whole house,
but where they are, they're in,

like, a little fenced-in area
with their mom.

She's very nervous.

Charges are being prepared
for the illegal dog breeder.

It's been a good result
for Officer Robin and the team,

but they're fighting an
uphill battle.

There's been an underground
dog-breeding network

here in Bermuda for quite a while.

Obviously, like most countries,
it's much the same as anywhere else,

but in Bermuda, you tend
to see it a lot more

because it's a small community.

So a pit bull gets loose, everybody
knows about it, everybody sees it,

and everything happens in
very close proximity.

So we need to stay on top of it
as best we can.

It's very difficult.

I'd stick them all in here,

but I've already been instructed
by my husband - no more dogs.

I have two at home as well.

So, yeah, we're full.

Obviously, I want to take them
all home, just because I don't know

if they're going to find homes
for them, if they can find homes

for them, so that's difficult.

In the west of the island, Officers
Daishon Chin and Brit Jen Suter

are getting ready for
a day on patrol.

You want one? Two.

Two? These little gums?

They need to start making these
sizes a bit bigger, you know?

Take a drive.

So, we are currently on our way to
look out for any traffic offences,

anything like that.

I'm punching in different number
plates of different cars and bikes,

just to see if we've got
any that pass

that are unlicensed or uninsured.

Let's see this lady
riding this bike,

it might be uninsured
and unlicensed,

so we're just going to double check.

Oh, she's gone, gone. She's gone!

With so many alleyways
and cut-throughs in Bermuda

that a police car can't access, a
rider can often make a quick escape.

Is that her? Yeah.

They're grateful that the rider
eventually stops for them.

Although perhaps it's not
best on a corner.

Is it the right one? Yeah.

Good day. How are you doing today?

Could you turn off
your vehicle for me?

The reason why you've been
pulled over is

because your bike has shown up
that it's uninsured and unlicensed.

I'm writing a ticket for the
no-licence bike.

She's claiming at the moment
that she has got insurance,

so we're just checking to see.
If not, she'll get two tickets.

With a ticket for $250 already to
pay for an unlicensed bike...

If you don't pay it
within seven days,

you will be expected to
attend court.

..the rider needs to provide
proof of insurance

so she doesn't get another one.

Do you have email on your phone?

Or if someone can send it to you?

It's important for people to
be insured.

People get into collisions
and they don't have insurance,

that's not fair on the other
party involved,

so it's just really important to
manage that, otherwise it can

become complicated
further down the line for people.

Well, if you can show us
the proof on insurance, then you'll

just get the one ticket for today.

Most of the time,
people definitely try

and make you believe
that their insurance is fine.

And if they produce it in
front of us,

then obviously we won't issue it.

How's the your insurance
coming along?

Hmm...

You got it here?

Yeah, this is the paperwork.

Finally, officers Jen and Daischon
have had enough waiting

and issue a further
ticket for no insurance.

All right, so I'm not saying
that we don't believe you, however

you're just going to get issued
a further ticket for the insurance.

If you're able to prove that the
bike is indeed insured,

you can just bring that to court
on your court date given,

and then that ticket will be
taken away.

So this one, you will have to attend
court for...

With a ticket issued for
no insurance,

the woman should not be riding her
bike on the roads.

I'll advise you not to ride it

cos you can get another ticket
if seen again.

And certainly not in front
of the two police officers

who just ticketed her.

I can't tell you what to do but
that's just my advice.

I mean, I'm not too far from here.

She actually lived around the corner
from where we'd stopped her,

so I guess in her mind,
she was probably like,

"Well, let me just get it home."

All right. All right, ma'am.
Well, I gave you my advice.

You know, you can advise someone,

but whether they actually choose to
listen to that or not.

If she does get pulled over
by another unit,

they can pull her over and give her
another ticket, regardless

of whether we have or not.

We advised her not to ride the bike

because she was obviously uninsured
and unlicensed.

I was surprised, I don't know
whether she just wanted to get away

from the situation, but most of the
time, people will listen

and they will leave their bike, but
not get straight on it and ride off.

But the rider has encountered

officers Jen and Daischon in
a forgiving mood.

We were well within our rights
to ticket her again.

However, you know, when it comes
to ticketable offences, it's down

to the officer's discretion and, you
know, we're not here to harass her.

However, if she is stopped
by another unit,

then she is likely to get another
ticket for the exact same offences

we pulled her over for.

It was a good traffic stop.

We just have to
use our discretion anyway.

She's already ticketed, you know,
why twist the knife?

Tourism is one of Bermuda's biggest
industries, responsible

for creating almost 3,000 local jobs
and bringing in millions in revenue.

Can't even quantify how proud
I am to be a Bermudian.

I'm just...I love it.

Officer Chris Douglas has
worked in the police for 11 years.

We even have a song called...

I'm not a singer.

Today, he's patrolling
Blue Hole Hill

with officers Krishna Singh
and James Ely.

It's very peaceful down here.

They're here to look for a local
who's already known to the police.

He's been making money by acting
as a tour guide without

the correct qualifications.

He's been in the area here
impersonating a tour guide,

and there's some concerns as to him
directing visitors probably

in places that he shouldn't be.

Bermudians rely on the tourism
industry, so we definitely

need to make sure that our visitors
are happy, they're safe and

they have a good time and they come
back and tell all their friends.

Police have encountered
the rogue tour guide before.

Two weeks ago, we snuck up on him

and, oh, boy,
he looked like a deer in headlights.

I said, "What are you doing here?"

He said, "Oh, I'm just talking
to the young lady,

"giving her some history."

I said, "You're not supposed to be
doing that, you know,

"you could be giving this lady
the wrong information."

And I told him, you know,
to leave the area, which he did.

It's not illegal in Bermuda
to impersonate

a registered tour guide.
Julie Pitt is an official one.

It's recommended that you do
the Blue Flag course. OK.

And that tells you all about Bermuda
and stuff like that.

It's like a little test. You have
to do that or you don't have to?

It's recommended that you do it.

Julie knows how important it is
for guides to give tourists

a great experience.

Some people are just winging it

and then people come back
and they're like, "What was that?"

We want everybody to be
on the same path

so that we can tell
great stories about our Bermuda.

It's also a matter of keeping
tourists safe.

Well, this is one of the actual
caves that are in Bermuda.

Obviously, they've got it fenced off
cos they want to make sure

nobody goes down, and plus,
it's dangerous cos it's slippery.

So, this is one of the reasons why
you should know the area

and know what's protected and what's
not, as an actual tour guide.

The main thing is injury.

You can run that risk of a person
getting injured,

so you really don't want them
to come down here.

Whoo!

Next, they check
a local diving spot.

In all my years of being
a Bermudian, I've never done that.

Really? No, never.

So, the person we're
looking for is not here,

so we can walk around and just
see if he's down further.

It's been a good day
for the officers patrolling

this piece of paradise,

as this holidaying New York City
cop has observed.

I might transfer over.

What's the salary, just in or
around? 70K starting.

70K start? Wow, that's more
than NYPD for a start.

NYPD is 65K.

But a loaf of bread
here in Bermuda is $7.

The police may not have found
the rogue tour guide today,

but Officer Krishna is
pretty confident

that they've done their job.

I think word travels quite
quickly in Bermuda, very quickly,

so I know he knows that we are
looking for him, and these things go

a long way in a small community.

And I think that has made
a big impact.

It's one month
since the pit bull puppies were

rescued from the home of
an illegal breeder.

High time that Officer Robin
checked up on them.

I haven't seen them since they were
seized, so I'm excited to see

how big they've gotten
and how well they're doing.

I'm a dog person,
so I've been thinking about them

since they've been gone,
wondering how they're doing

and you just...you know, you want
to cuddle them, you want to make

sure they're OK, so I'm really,
really excited to see them.

Dog wardens Sean Pedro
and Taieed Butler have brought

the puppies to a local
nature reserve from the pound.

Hi. I'm good, how are you doing?

Hey, good to see you. Oh,
I'm so excited to see the puppies.

Yeah, look how big they've gotten.
They've gotten big, huh?

They're so big! Hi!

Hardly recognisable now.

They're so much calmer now.

Oh, they look fantastic. Mr Butler
has been taking good care of them.

Yeah. Hi, buddy. Do you remember
this lady? Is this the female?

Mm-hm. Hello. Oh, no!

Oh, no, you might just have
to come in my car.

This is the nice police lady that
came to save you. Hello!

They're probably at just over
two months now, so they're really

all starting to come into their own
individual personalities, individual

colours, and you're really starting
to get to see what you've got.

You are very calm, aren't you?

And the paws, as you can see,
are getting very big.

With space in the pound at a
premium, there is

pressure to move them on.

Has there been any
interest in homes for them?

All of our foster
homes are currently full.

It's hard finding foster care for
restricted-breed dogs.

A lot of people want to help,
but not a lot of people

want to go and spend the $4,000
or $8,000 for fencing.

It's expensive for the fencing,
yeah.

Or a couple of thousand dollars
for a kennel.

So, it does limit our ability
to rehome them and shelter them.

OK, go play.

They give the puppies a chance
to stretch their legs

and chase the wild chickens.

It's a puppy tea party.
My goodness.

Oh, my goodness.

Playing in the park is being
appreciated by the puppies

and officers alike.

We've just had a really, really busy
week within the police service,

so it's very nice for me
to have a distraction like this,

that's for sure.

I didn't realise how much
I needed this!

I know you deal with dogs every day
but you probably don't get to

just roll around and play with them.
No, we never do.

Play with puppies,
I think maybe that should be, like,

a weekly thing for police officers.
Puppy therapy.

I've always loved dogs.

We had boxers when I was growing up.

You really create a bond with them
so, I don't know, I...

Sometimes, dogs are
better than people, honestly.

Your dogs are always
happy to see you,

your dogs just want love
and attention and care,

and if you give that to them,

then they're going to be happy to
see you and make you happy as well.

My dogs at home, I think
they can sense it when you're down,

and they'll come and give you
a cuddle or, you know, just give you

that peace that you might
need and a distraction from what

might be going on during the day.

They may be struggling to rehome the
pups, but they're still optimistic.

So, we're obviously very hopeful

that all of them are going to
get homes.

And as cute as they are,
there's absolutely no reason why

they shouldn't. Yeah.

Especially so young,
they have such a great personality.

Yes, you do!
Oh, they're so fantastic.

All of them are just heavenly.

Even when I took them out
the kennels this morning, they was

eating together, you know, they had
a resource garden and all.

Oh, that's perfect. They were all
very nice to each other.

So they're just not going to
be aggressive dogs.

No guarding of food,
none of that stuff.

Just getting attached can be
difficult, I'm sure.

Well, that's the thing, it's very
easy to get attached to them.

There's a fine line between,
you know, caring and loving

and feeling and then, you know,
winding up with compassion fatigue.

For sure. Cos compassion fatigue can
be a real killer,

especially in this job.
Oh, for sure.

OK, puppy, it's time to go
back into your little crate,

playtime's over.

If there is no new owner found
and they do not have the capacity

to keep the dogs,
they will euthanise them.

I don't blame the wardens,
I completely understand what

they have to do and I support them,
but it's still,

for a dog lover, it's, like,
it breaks my heart, yeah.

The wardens will be working overtime

to make sure the puppies do
find homes.

Back in the west, officers
Jen and Daischon have been

on the eye out for more traffic
infringements when an elderly local

finds himself in need of some help.

So, we were sitting static,

cos we were doing some more traffic
control.

As we were sitting there, this
gentleman came up to us and informed

us that, unfortunately, his tyre's
gone and asked for our assistance.

The tyre blew.

That's all I could tell you,
the tyre blew and I was right here,

and I pulled over and I checked this
and this is what we came up with.

I'm glad I've got a spare tyre
in the back.

Officer Jen joined the police
service more than two years ago.

I wanted to help people so,
obviously,

being in the police is a good way
of being able to do that.

I never thought that
I could be a police officer

because of being female.

Everyone sees the police
and they want to be the big, burly,

you know, but there's all different
sides of policing, so to be

able to just help people in that
circumstance makes you feel good.

I appreciate the police more
and more now.

Bermuda police is not
just about arresting peoples.

Exactly!

Getting the flat tyre off
is proving tricky,

but Jen can do the burly work
when she needs to.

Let me see if I can unscrew it now.
I don't think so. No?

I'm definitely happy to get stuck
in, it's never been an issue.

I was always a bit
of a tomboy growing up,

so getting my hands dirty and
whatnot is not really a big deal.

Just got to move the whole tyre,
that's the problem. You got it?

You just sweat through any job that
you're attending, you know,

anything that you do, you just
sweat through it,

and I just think to myself,
if I'm sweating,

everyone else is sweating,
so it's not just one of us.

I think we'll get it. You're doing a

However, Jen's burly work
isn't being appreciated by everyone.

You're a female but
you have changed a tyre before?

The gentleman
of the tyre we were changing

slowly started to usher me
out of the way.

I didn't mind, you know,

sometimes you've got to let
people do their thing.

A lot of people assume cos I'm
female, I don't know how to do it.

However, I do have a vehicle
of my own, so I've had to do it

myself at times, and also, this is
not the first time

I've been asked for assistance
to change a tyre, so...

I let them do their thing, it's...
I wasn't upset about it.

Sometimes they just need to feel
they can handle it

and I don't want to make them
feel any sort of way, so in that

circumstance, I was like,
do you know what,

let me just take a step back.

You want me to do some?

I'm almost there, Jen.
Oh, there you go, see.

It's OK, Jen, let the man work.

I know, apparently.

Jen's hands-on approach may not be
fully appreciated here,

but she knows that, in many policing
situations, she always has the edge.

Dealing with children, dealing with
domestics, things like that,

sometimes people respond better.

So, in that sense, obviously,

sometimes it's just nice having the
balance of both male and female.

So, I'm going to put your tyre
in the back of the car, OK?

Yeah, just leave it there,

Sometimes you've got to know
when to step back and, you know...

So I'm going to just step back
and let them do their thing.

It was a macho moment for them,
for sure.

It's six weeks since the pit bull
puppies were rescued,

and finally, Officer Robin has some
good news about them.

We've been trying really,
really hard, lots of people have

been working on it to try
and get homes for the puppies and,

luckily, one's going to their new
home, which is just excellent.

So, right now, we are going to meet
a lady who is fostering

one of the new puppies for
their new home.

The new owner just has to get some
of the fencing and things

like that in place, so she's going
to foster them

and just keep them for two or three
weeks until that's all in place,

so she's really excited.

This puppy has not been named yet.

I think Robin would be
a perfect name.

Oh, look at you!

You're so sweet!

Oh, gosh, yeah.

Oh, you're such a lucky girl.

Well, we've got the new owner,

so let's take her up and see.

You can tell that she's just,
like, people...

..trusts people, that's awesome.

As a restricted breed, the pit bull
can only be kept in an area

with a kennel and secure fencing.

show you our fenced-in area.

Oh, this is nice. This is nice.

You've got a nice little
area to run around.

Yes, you've never had so much space.

I know! Look at that.

There's also there's shade
and shelter, this is perfect.

This is perfect. Nice area for the
dog to run around, toys in the yard,

this is perfect. There's no point of
exit for the dogs to get loose.

This is great fencing.
Nice, high fencing.

I don't know if you'll get that big,
but just in case.

Hey, she might be a jumper, right?
Yeah, you never know.

But you can't get out!

So, I found out the dog was up
for fostering about two weeks ago

and my thought process was like,
OK, have to do something,

have to be able to, like,
foster a dog, even if

I can't adopt one, I need to be able
to help in some sort of way.

So, we already have two dogs,
they're both rescues,

and truthfully, I think she's going
to fit in perfectly fine,

they love other dogs.

So, she does not
have a name as of yet,

but she is a beautiful colour,
so hopefully...

I don't know, maybe she's like...?
She looks like a bit of a Hazel.

Go on. Yeah!

She's like, "Am I really this...?
Am I really...?"

She's so happy!

The puppy may not have been named
after Officer Robin just yet,

but to see a puppy homed
has been a boost.

We just assist the wardens with
some of the warrants that they do.

With them, we've come across some
pretty bad situations,

so it's so heartening to see a
good ending to this,

to see healthy puppies,
happy puppies.

It kind of makes all the other
stuff you do worth it, you know,

and all the other heartbreak
you see.

So I'm blown away by how amazing
this set-up is.

Let's go.

We develop, as police officers,
a thick skin,

as I'm sure the wardens do with what
they deal with, because we have

to protect ourselves,
so when we do get a chance to have a

happy ending and a
home for puppies or be able

to help a family, that you've got to
really, you know, soak that in.

I just... I love it.
This is just great.
