- Life isn't easy when you're different.

And that's even before the war started.

As the weather changed, resources ran low.

There wasn't enough food or water to go around.

The country became divided.

Two different sides emerged,

the resistance and the remnants.

The fighting was brutal.

Cities were destroyed and millions died.

Most people during the war didn't have much patience

for special kids like me.

Since they saw us as weak,

I didn't think we'd survive.

While everyone was freaking out and trying to save themselves,

Connie found me.

She took me to a safe place.

A place far away from danger.

A place with others like me.

I could finally be myself.

Still, it's hard to believe in my abilities.

And being out in the middle of nowhere, it got lonely.

That's why I'm glad I have my brothers, Peter, Bart, and James.

That's my brother Peter.

He always has a plan.

Connie calls him stoic, but I just call him Peter.

There's James.

I love him to death, but he's got a bit of an anger problem.

but no matter how much he huffs and puffs, I know he loves us.

And that's my best buddy, Bart.

His brother actually fought in the resistance.

I know if he ever gets a chance,

he's gonna fight the Revenants too.

I'm not much of a fighter, so I'm glad we have Bart on our side.

And that's me, Russell.

I'm a bit of a handyman, if I do say so myself.

I keep everyone connected,

and I hope one day to find my muse, Sarah.

She used to take care of me before I met Connie,

but I'll see her soon enough. I know it.

Connie brought us to the middle of nowhere,

away from the violence.

- Russell, I told you to quit messing with that stuff.

- We didn't have to worry about who was a remnant soldier

or resistance fighter.

- Careful, Russell. You don't want it to get infected.

but that was before she got sick.

The Resistance should be done building the city by now.

Follow the desert flats east,

and make sure to keep the letter safe at all costs.

- Shoot! I forgot the letter.

- You must walk further than you've ever gone before.

The road will be long and hard, but you've grown up so much.

Rely on Peter. He knows the way.

At the flats' end, you'll see the river.

Follow it east until you've come across the railroad tracks.

The tracks stop at the pinnacles.

You'll see giant rocks that shoot out of the earth

and reach for the heavens.

Use them as cover, do not go around.

The remnants scour the area looking for survivors.

And just beyond, you'll see the lights of New Haven.

- We got one, we got one.

Russell.

We got one, come on.

- No, we can't! It's hurt! It's dying!

- Get out of the way, Russell! Better it than us!

- You wouldn't want someone to eat you!

- You're acting like this is the first time you've eaten meat!

- It's scared! Look at it!

- We're scared too, Russell. Scared of dying out here.

- It's been at least two days since our last meal.

Maybe we can do some sort of ritual

to thank the creature for its sacrifice.

- James, don't!

to have enough food to continue the journey

and to give Connie the medicine she needs, right?

It helped us survive.

always getting into trouble.

But it's James who I'm really worried about.

He's a bit of a mystery to me.

He doesn't talk about his past much.

He and Peter always fought back home.

And now that we're alone in the desert,

it's getting worse.

- Still due east.

- So, we go...

- The, uh, well, it's twisted.

- Maybe we should have gone the other way.

- And walk aimlessly to nowhere?

- Everything gets twisted in war.

We just have to pull our heads together and think.

- When we get to New Haven,

She was the best staff member at my home, honorary even.

After every shower, I would pull the curtain back

and burst out with a shampoo ball as my microphone

I was looking in the mirror,

but I was singing to her.

She combed my wet hair afterwards,

but I just couldn't work up the courage to sing to her.

I would sit at the edge of my bed and she'd smile at me.

And I'd smile back at her.

She made me feel handsome.

- James, what do you want to do when we get to the city?

- I just want a real home.

I can't stop thinking about the hospital,

before I met Connie,

how they treated me.

They used to spray me with a hose

when they thought I needed a shower.

Then just tossed baby powder all over me.

They saw me as an animal

and the worse they treated me,

the worse I got.

I couldn't control myself.

I would scratch the walls so hard it would break my fingernails.

All I had was my anger.

They used to put me alone in a room for hours.

I was used to being alone,

but this was different.

- You're not alone anymore, James.

- That's when Connie came.

One day, the door opened and there she was.

She was so kind.

- I guess I want to be a part of the resistance

like my brother.

He got an emergency call saying that the remnants

had breached the city walls and just ran out of the house.

I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.

But he looked back at me for a second

and he smiled and saluted me.

I put my hand on the window and as he lifted his,

for a moment there I felt his strength

and what it must feel like to be a true soldier.

Two days later, Connie showed up.

I don't know if he's dead or alive out there,

but I know damn well I want to be as strong he is.

What about you, Peter?

- Give food and medicine for Connie.

Bring it back to the farmhouse.

Okay, let's get some sleep.

Back home, I knew what to expect.

- This kind of reminds me of when we used to

gather around to watch old movies with Connie.

- Back to the Future.

That was my favorite.

I knew Connie loved the Dead Poets Society.

- The Wizard of Oz for me.

You're right, Bart.

This does feel like movie night.

Everything except for James.

- You guys remember the plan?

We need to be ready.

to get what we need to survive.

I know that now that my head got too big.

I should have listened to you instead of trying to control you.

I didn't know how to tell you how much did I care.

I hope you find peace, brother.

- None of us would have been here without you.

You were willing to die just to save us,

and you did just that.

Connie will be proud.

I hope he finds peace too.

James's death made me realize just how
serious this adventure really is.

I'm determined now more than ever
to find Sarah and save Connie.

But now that we're in the heart of the city,

my stomach is all tied in knots.

The city isn't what we thought it would be.

There could be remnants,

and no one we've met on this journey has been friendly.
