his name is Marcel.

He's always asking me, "Where are ya?

"Why he doesn't come for me."

You know, it's like something missing.

- They met with a bunch of migrants in Calais.

They said, "They could all come to Britain."

The only people that never stand up for

are the British people
and hard working taxpayer.

- My name is Kais, I come from
Tunisia, I'm 30 years old.

I'm here in The Jungle
trying to go through to U.K.

From three days I've been here, you see,

it's so hard for us because
we don't have the resources.

We come from far away.

- All right, so we're recording

- [Kais] My son in U.K, my ex-girlfriend,

she's living in the U.K. from
about five years or six years.

- And you have a son with her?
- Yeah.

His name is Marcel.

I want to be near my son.

I want to help her and help
my son to grow up between us.

Maybe not in the same
house, but between us.

And will try to make my life once again.

Make family, you know when I
see his picture, I'm happy.

When I hear his voice that

I'm in France I'm near him.

When I was in Tunisia, I was working.

- I'm not sure about my life.

dangerous in the Jungle?

- Yeah it's dangerous, almost
when you have something

to protect yourself, is better.

No matter what you have, but

why they call jungle here.

going to try to get to England?

If I was here one year
ago I would make it.

Yeah, many people there call it Jungle,

but for me it's not Jungle.

Its land which we are on it

and making our best to survive.

So anybody can all it to what he wants.

But for me, it's not jungle.

We're not animals, so...

did you imagine how it would
be to be in these countries?

- What, heaven on earth,

civilization, being free.

- [Richard] Do you feel
free in yourself Kais?

- (laughing) Not really.

(quiet music)

- We are in Dunkirk the second jungle.

People they tend to call it otherwise

but they didn't find any name.

So I call it jungle second one.

- [Woman] This is how they
tried to keep warm at night.

So they sleep there.

- Oh no, in the tents?

rolled into the fire at night.

- They try to get warm

and they have the wood fire, no money.

Adults they know how it is, how dangerous.

But kids, you see, they have fall asleep.

We will check if he have the cream.

We need to buy for them.

These guys are Kurdish,
they come from Kurdistan,

Iraq, and they don't speak Arabic.

And I found that these guys

they don't want to help
anybody else, only the Kurdish.

So they are taking the money
to take to get the clothes,

they are taking the money to get food.

They are taken from the money
to be there in the camp.

I went to the police many
times to talk about it,

and I told them how they work.

So maybe they saw me with the police.

- [Richard] The smugglers
saw you with the police?

What did they say to you?

- You have to leave and
they brought a knife,

said me if I will be with it again,

that they will stab me or use a gun.

It's the first place where
I stayed in the Jungle,

so the tent here all around.

Good memories, even the
worst situation though,

but it was good memories.

- When you first came here

you gave yourself four weeks

and then you were gonna hand yourself

into the police or go back to Tunisia.

- Yeah, I was thinking that.

That was everything to do it that way

but I'm not going back.

- [Richard] What has made
you decide to stay here?

- Maybe I find myself feeling better.

I'm useful.
- And did you

speak to your son?
- A little bit,

he wasn't happy.
- What did he say?

- "Where are you, you
said that you will come.

"You're not coming."

It's big, he makes me
feel that I'm not here,

I'm not alive you know.

But they was fighting, so the Afghanis

took the place and they burnt
the tents of the Sudanese.

- [Richard] Things are closing now Kais?

- Yeah all of the shops, I
mean most, many of the shops.

Look at that, I think they are taking

the restaurants and the
shops to close them.

- Awesome.

your food from the shelves?

- The Idiots well, it was
the best restaurant remember?

They had the bad eviction
that they had that

there's no way to stay longer.

So yeah, they decided to leave.

I mean, they're smart, smart asses.

They stopped us like a normal check,

they open the boot and
they found a gas mask.

The gas mask is only to protect
ourselves from tear gas.

They asked for papers, then they took us

to the police station.

- So it turns out in France
that gas mask is illegal, right?

So they throw the book at us.

- [Kais] I lost my freedom.

Lost my freedom man.

(quiet music)

- [Richard] That experience
was really grim, really grim.

25 years covering wars.

That is one of the worst experiences

I've ever had with police.

There's piss and shit on
the walls, on the floor.

There's one blanket.

But the worst thing of all of this

is that Kais still in there, right?

And we had to walk out of that cell

and leave him there and when
I sat there and told him,

put my arm around, and told
him that we were leaving

him there, that we have to leave him there

because we're being deported.

You know, he broke down.

(fire crackling)

(quiet music)

So we're going to get our stuff,

see Kais and give him his stuff back

in the detention center
and get out of here.

- Really?
- Yeah.

- Is it just the feeling of
being kinda locked in again or,

- [Richard] What are they saying about.

- [Richard] Why can't
they just do it, I mean,

- Why do they have to

lock you up for all this time?

(serious music)

- [Richard] How does it feel to be out?

- I want to have a beer. (laughing)

Really I want to have a beer.

It's like yeah.

- [Richard] 25 days in here?

- Yeah 26 days.

They've been the longest days ever.

Nothing worth like freedom.

But really I'm sorry for
these guys, you know.

Many, they're innocent and
they want only the better life.

They want nothing bad you know.

people that are inside still?

- Yeah, inside the detention center.

We have to appreciate
or tolerate the others.

Wherever the religion or the attitudes,

or you know the goals.

I mean everybody wants to leave happy.

This is our goal, this
is what we have to share.

It's not about money.

Politics, religions, worth I know.

I came here to see my son as
fast as possible, I couldn't.

I tried my best to be active,

to not stay like watching like others.

I appreciate my
experience, teach me a lot.

The ups and downs, they are
the best to learn, you know.
