At the crack of dawn,

Shawn pomrenke is finishing the
first of two critical cleanups this week.

That bottom box looked like
it had a little more gold in it.

Yeah -good answer.

Maybe.

So far, this season.

Mr. Gold has hit his weekly
250-ounce benchmark

time and time again... Gold, baby, gold.

Bam!

Yes!

As he works on the most
ambitious plan of his career.

But today...

This is a sad lot here, boys.

Not much in here.

The well might be starting to run dry.

It's gold mining, you got good
cleanouts, you got bad cleanouts.

This is probably one of the bad ones.

Maybe a record low.

This season, I've been following
the trail of the original gold rush.

We went down 80-feet with our first cut,

got down to that pay layer

that old timers couldn't get, and
it's been running hot ever since.

To hit our summer goal, we need
to hit 125-ounces twice a week.

But this one's definitely looking light.

Count 'er out, Shawn.

There's 10, there's 20.

40, 50... ooh, we did hit 62.

62.74-ounces is worth 157 grand,

but falls short of the 125-ounce pace

that Mr. Gold needs to keep.

I guess it can't be Christmas every day.

Soon we're gonna be out of pay.

We started the next cut,
but I need to make sure

that we're following the
gold in the right direction.

The only way to know
is to get 80 feet down,

and so far we've only made it 32 feet.

The pay dirt pile is dwindling.

That's the last of it right there.

By the looks of it, we got
maybe four days of pay dirt,

and we don't have
the new cut opened up,

and we're not at pay dirt
yet on the new cut.

It's gonna be a problem.

I'm stressed.

I could get mad and pissed off or
stressed out, but it does nobody any good.

The crew, it doesn't help the crew out,
it doesn't help get it done any faster.

I keep it cool, I keep it
calm, I keep collected.

That keeps my guys focused
and cool, calm, collected.

That's how we're going to get it done.

I could be all pissed off and yelling and
screaming, but that does nobody any good.

So right now I just need to stay in
the dozer and I need to keep dozing.

Time is not on our side right now,
and my whole career is on the line,

and that's not an exaggeration.

That's why I have the whole
crew out here digging and working.

We've got to be relentless.

Right now, the pressure is
on to get this cut opened up.

We got everybody working on stripping.

We've got Trevor in the 365,
Jody in the 475, Cody in the 8

and I'm in mighty mouse, the 65.

The little dozer, the lpg, is for,

for the soft areas where
the big dozers can't go.

They got to keep every
dozer moving at this point.

We gotta get on bedrock.

All hands on deck right
now to get down to pay dirt.

I put my whole life savings
into this mine and spent it all

and it's finally starting to come back.

But, it's not a time to get relaxed and

figure that it's gonna keep coming
without a bunch of hard work.

Out on the water...

I'm curious about this area
right over here, because,

you see, there's like islands
of sand and there's some rocks

and then there's some of this pea gravel
over here, it's like 35-40 feet here.

Zeke tenhoff is on the
hunt, for a payday bonanza

to satisfy his hunger for gold.

There's so much ground here and, like
I have high hopes that there's a lot of

good gold in the area, I'm
feeling very positive about it.

We've been on good gold,
but we need to be on great gold.

So today we're searching for a gold
phenomenon that forms in virgin ground.

It's called the cheese sandwich.

It's five layers.

First gravel, then Clay, then gold,
then more Clay and more gravel.

And if you can find a sandwich like that,

supposedly the gold in
the middle is super jacked.

All right, throw her down.

We've been going
deep, so we can only dive

for three hours or less at a time.

So we have to be sure that
we're making the right call.

This ground is loaded with pea gravel,

so it should be the perfect
situation for a cheese sandwich.

I hope it exists because
we need to step it up

if I'm gonna be able to keep this energy.

I've heard about it multiple times.

I think the first time
back in 2011 or 2012,

I heard two guys talking
about it and they did really well.

It makes sense, you know?

Because the gold likes to
travel down through the gravel,

and then it would find a
place to rest on the Clay.

But then if there was
more gravel under that Clay,

then that would also, that
would make it even richer.

Yeah, it's almost like a
double bottom layer cake.

Because I believe it's the best ground
on tomcod, and it's been killer so far.

I know Joe wishes that he's on this spot,

but I've been getting out here
first, so I made this spot my own.

anyone take it away from me.

Right now we can do a test run
to make sure she's seaworthy.

per cleanup, and we're
not getting that yet.

This is going to be a giant time suck,

because first we've got to
get the boat back in place

out Scott to look for it.

He's a decent diver, and
with the nitrox system,

he'll be able to work at
those depths for a while.

What's happening
with the nitrox system?

Well, the nitrox is down.

The coil went bad on
it, and we traced it down,

did some diagnostics.

At this point, we might
as well just go into town.

Vernon adkison's nitrox system,
which enables divers to dive

at deep depths for long hours,
has taken a dive of its own.

We're all out of shape here.

The ignition coil on
the nitrox system is shot.

That means at this point, there's
no way the divers can dive this deep.

So it's time to pack it in for today.

This day just keeps
getting more frustrating.

Richie wasn't thinking straight.

He didn't hook the nozzle up
to the winch while he was down.

The nozzle and the
hose are heavy as hell.

That's how we get the
whole thing up and down.

Now we're gonna have to
pull it up a little bit at a time.

It's like trying to wrangle
an underwater anaconda.

I've had a talk with rich. I
gently put him in his place.

I just say, rich, just listen.

Anytime a diver comes
up, you hook the nozzle.

He's a idiot is what he is.

I think we're off the bottom.

So every time they lose their grip on it,

The reason it's so heavy
is because it's full of water.

We've got to go down and get the nozzle.

At this point, we can't keep drifting.

up that nozzle and the hose.

So Scott is going to attempt
to free dive 45 feet down

and hook up the nozzle
and hose to the winch.

He can't dive with the suit because
the nitrox dive system took a dump.

This kind of dive is about as
dangerous as it gets out here.

He's got no air, no comms, nothing.

But this is what it's come to.

up the nozzle and pull it in,

so we'll be able to get the hell out of here

Otherwise, we're going
to go so far down this hole,

Pretty big day.

We're gonna get our boat in the water.

We did a lot of fixes. Brand new paint
job, upgrades here, upgrades there.

I changed out the suction hose

from an eight to a twelve.
We got bigger engine.

It looks like the all in
is ready for her test run.

If the test is successful, I'll
be able to use the crawler

in the deepest water
anybody's ever worked in nome.

We're talking 65-70 feet
deep at a secret claim

that I know about that's loaded with gold

and with the mistress struggling
right now, this will be just in time.

But it wouldn't be reaper nation if it
weren't a few hitches with the plan.

So we've got a couple little issues.

This sluice box here is six
feet wide by 18 feet long.

It's a little big, you know,
and it's gonna be real heavy.

Hopefully, the boat's not going to be
lopsided too much when we roll over.

We made upgrades to the sluice
box to accommodate all the material

that the crawler is gonna work.

But now it's heavy.

It's too heavy.

Like so heavy, it may put too
much weight on one side of the boat.

And two, we're having a
small problem with the leaks.

Here's one hole, you know, it's kinda big,

and here's two holes, also kind of big.

Let's be honest, this
boat was in world war ii,

and it's been around.

You really want to run around

and try to plug every hole you
can before you get out there.

Because a little hole is not a big deal.

Ten little holes is a big deal.

It's a big deal.

The all in is not perfect.

That's why today's main objective
is to make sure it's seaworthy

before we attempt to
launch the crawler from it.

We're gonna be the Titanic.

Hopefully, everything goes smooth.

We're running low on pay dirt.

The pay dirt piles are
getting smaller and smaller.

I plan on knocking a big
chunk out of it right now.

I want to take the excavator

come along the high wall and rip
the high wall down and peel it back.

And that way you can really
see what the hell's going on.

You can see all the different layers

and maybe get a better
idea of where the gold's at.

We made some good progress,
but we need to go quicker

before the whole pay pile is gone.

Right now, I need to see any kind
of sign that we're on the right path.

Because if we're not, I'll lose everything.

There's lumber.

I like seeing the old timers.

I like seeing the old workings.

When you see remnants of the old
timers, that means they worked this ground.

There's definitely gold here.

But with the old timers'
technology, they couldn't get all of it.

That's why we got to get that
layer beneath where they were.

Sometimes you get lucky and
you get into some higher ground

that they didn't totally clean out.

I want to see if that's pay or not.

I mean, it's definitely pay,
but I want to see how thick it is.

I don't usually find a
pay layer this high up.

That's a good sign.

That means this cut's
headed in the right direction.

Because the further down we
go, it should be absolutely loaded.

It could be a real thin layer of pay.

And it could go back to Clay.

When you can see these little
vortices coming off the front of the boat,

That's the strongest
current I've ever worked in.

It was as much as I
could just to hang on.

phantom blast of water.

I was like, hanging onto the hose,

getting blown completely sideways.

Like trying to climb
up the hose sideways.

It's a bummer Sam wasn't
able to stay down for longer.

But between the two of
us, we still had a strong day.

We've got lots of diving in today.

Judging by what I saw, this is the
best gold we've been on all summer.

home, rest up and get right back

out here when the weather lets up.

you and I are not seeing
eye to eye on anything, really.

You have a tendency

In operational situations,

And I'm wondering what the reason is.

If you remember, right from the get go,

I told you that no drugs or

Do you smoke before
you go down on a dive?

Not every time.

That drop going down to the
bottom is the hardest part for me.

But once I get down there, I'm at home.

But it just kind of helps me
to relax and cope with that.

And I still function quite well.

My faculties work well.

environment, calm and collectively.

You can think, if you like, that you're
just as sharp when you're stoned.

But I'm here to tell you that you're not.

I grew up in the '60s and '70s,
okay? I was a child of my generation.

I did everything that came
along, including smoking

a boatload of dope, all right?

And I happen to know for a certain
fact that I don't function nearly as well

when I'm high as when I'm
not, and I'm not gonna deal with

stoned people on this boat, so it's either
leave the cannabis or leave the boat.
