the fleet's young gun has a
plan to accelerate production.

We're on the hot ground right now.

But my main problem
is the nighttime is open.

And in Alaska, as you know,

we get 22 hours of daylight time.

There is no reason for me to
not fill that nighttime position.

No time wasting, you know?

My goal is to have two
crawlers that can go deep

and I don't have to get divers.

But in order to make this happen,

I need to rely on my divers.

Getting kicked off the water
last week cost me 30 ounces.

So, I really need to take advantage
of round-the-clock daylight.

It's all about putting gold in
the box at the end of the day.

Diving that deep, you
wanna limit your dive time.

But we need to make up for lost time.

So, we're gonna push it.

Four hours apiece, back to back to back.

It won't be easy,

but we're gonna need to lasso
another 30 ounces to get back on pace.

Coffee was hot.

I'll take the lead today and start us off.

Hopefully, this will be the juice we need.

They're already Chris is
out there at tomcod already.

We just gotta get out
there and make sure that

he's not trying to get
friendly on our area out there.

This has been a battle all season.

mined the last few summers.

The weather has had an impact

on the water as well as on land

as Mr. Gold's inland mine gambit

has started falling behind pace.

It's been raining pretty heavy here lately,

so we got a bunch of mud in the pit,

muddy roads and
mud and mud and mud.

So, now, it's back to mining.

The weather on the inland
mine doesn't affect you

as much as it does out on the water.

But we're not immune.

The storm stopped us from
mining on the new cut for a few days,

because it ended up
turning into a big mud pit.

We're back up and running,
but we did lose some time,

so we need to come up
with a plan to make up for it.

Luckily, I have one.

This is gonna help us out a lot.

See if we can get everything
dialed in and working

and make sure the gun works.

It's been a long time since we ran

and my dad bought it
years and years ago,

and never really used it.

It sat in a con ex forever.

I'm gonna put it to work.

Wash plant filters the pay dirt.

Separates the rocks, the sand

and puts a higher concentration
of material in the sluice box.

But I have to save time right now.

That's where the
hydraulic blaster comes in.

It shoots out high pressure water

to wash out all the lighter material

before it gets to the plant.

Less total material means less scoops.

Less scoops means less
time running the wash plant.

This blaster hasn't been used in years.

It's just been sitting in a con ex.

So, who knows if it even works?

We're gonna go ahead
and get everything fired up.

I'm gunning for a $10 million season,

so every minute I can save helps.

A little hard work never hurt nobody.

So I'm gonna take a big chance.

I'm going to take the boat off

and I'm gonna move it over
to a place I've never been

that could be just jacked with gold.

Feeling optimistic.

It's unusual ground for us,

and it could have some
of its own challenges.

But if it's good, we'll be able to feast on it

for the rest of the season.

We've never done a
dive over here before,

but I put this little heart right here.

So I would like to go and see
what's under this gravel right here.

These dunes.

It's a big patch of what you
can tell are lightweight gravels.

I want to just dig a hole right
here, see what's happening.

And we'll see how it goes.

It could be super awesome.

This area is deep.

It's over 35 feet.

So we're gonna have to cap
our dives off at three hours each.

It's also full of gravel.

And our giant 14-inch nozzle is
designed to dredge through deep sand.

So these gravels are gonna
be a lot more of a challenge.

But I need to pay off
my dredge this summer.

I kind of find you should
set your sluice box up,

depending on the gold
that you want to get.

What's your target gold?

What will 90% of that gold be?

And this plane just
won't get out of my shot.

This is expanded metal.

Make sure you put it in right.

Yeah. You got to make
sure the riffles are in correctly.

Come on, you bitch.

Okay.

Expanded metal is probably the best way

to catch fine gold in your sluice box.

Eighty percent to 90%
of our gold is fine gold.

We're going to be using
a set of Hungarian riffles.

I do not know why they're
called Hungarian riffles.

Some out there does know why,

and I bet you that guy's
not very good at getting gold,

but he's good at knowing all
the names of the mining pieces.

So what this does, it
creates a waterfall effect.

So the water goes over, it
comes around into a spiral,

and it's really the best for chunky gold.

'Cause it's got a nice
two-inch little surface

that gives gold nuggets the chance
to stop and hide in the back of it.

There are three issues
that are stopping us

from making gold on this barge.

First, it's human error.

This team is making
mistakes and it's costing us.

See how little water is
running through there right now?

All the water is going right there.

Taking out the water diverter was stupid.

So now all the water is going
to one side of the sluice box,

and the material is not
processing correctly.

This problem was completely avoidable.

We'll fix it when we dock.

But why did these guys think
they know more than I do?

First pan of the day.

I just want to see what
kind of gold we're getting.

Next issue, being on good ground.

I don't know what these
guys were doing before,

but today I put us on a good spot.

I should see good gold in this test pan.

So right here, we got our
first test pan of the day.

There's a couple different
kinds of gold in here.

We got really super-fine,
and we got salt and pepper.

Problem is, the super-fine
stuff does not pay the bills.

You know, it just doesn't pay the bills.

I don't know what to say.

Problem is, we with this box so much,

I don't really know how
much gold in the pan

equals how much gold in the box.

Look at the chunky big flakes.

Yeah, we're good, kris.
That's it right there, baby.

Yeah, that'll pay some bills.

Okay, I got us on great gold.

No more excuses.

Now, cycle time.

I need quick cycle times.

- Under a minute.
- Okay.

The operators are taking
way too long between buckets.

We should be seeing
a bucket every minute.

These people are taking three to
four minutes to do a single bucket.

It's simple math.
Fewer scoops, less gold.

So that has to change.

We're going so slow right now.

Yeah, I do. We're gonna
let the dude come up,

drop, and then, just
as he's on his way back,

that's when we start the clock.

Okay, here we go.

Bam, the clock is running.

I don't know if he knew
we were clocking him,

but he actually started
moving quicker this time.

- Fifty seconds, now that's not bad.

That's perfect.

And I'll tell you what I've noticed in life,

people always work harder
when you're watching them.

That's pretty good.

That's exactly what I want him to run

Now we have to keep at

This is not a vacation.

This is a job.

We're here to make gold, lots of gold,

and it's all about the cycle time.

You know, and I know this
guy can run that excavator.

And I know that he can
put a lot of gold in the box.

Well, our little skiff's doing motocross
tricks and wheelies out on the water.

It's just getting interesting.

That's a $5,000 skiff at best.

I want to make $10,000 today,

and I'm not gonna let that

It's when the wind's blowing
and they're capping rollers.

That's when it starts to
get a little more dangerous.

I'm making an executive call
to just keep pushing through.

After electing to battle the raging
currents, Scott foster is first up

utilizing Vernon's nitrox
dive system to go deep.

If he encounters any
problems in the rough seas,

it will be a long way to the surface,

with plenty of lines and hoses
to get tangled along the way.

I'm watching the bow of the boat come
separated from the ocean right now.

That's a little unsettling.

But if I wasn't looking at that right now,

just being on the boat, I
don't feel in any danger.

And I know I'm not gonna feel in any
danger once I get down to the bottom.

So, I'm not gonna let
my eyes play tricks on me.

And you can see exactly,

It's like fish in a barrel.

Getting close to the end of your, dive.

It was a good dive. It was a good dive.

We moved a lot of
material. I did see some gold.

Yeah, it's chunkier little pieces

than we're used to seeing.

If there's chunky gold popping up,

that probably means there's,

Jeff and Sam can stay out

and work it overnight.

Out on the gold ship

despite the rough seas,

diver Scott foster is still trudging ahead.

From what I'm seeing,

the sea conditions are too extreme.

It's not just the diver that takes
a beating in waves like this,

it's also the boat.

The gold ship has a sluice box
that hangs close to the water.

When the waves pound the gold ship,

the water can swamp the box,

washing the gold right
back into the ocean.

When you're out there gold mining,

you need to be aware of
every part of the operation.

has actually improved.

Gold mining is a lot of
different factors coming into play.

You have to be on a hot
spot that has gold to get gold.

You have to have good cycle time,

and then you have to have
the sluice box set up properly

so you can get paid.

And that's what we're doing right now.

We melt gold bars 'cause it's a
little bit easier to move around,

and you get it closer to being pure gold.

The first ingredient is 100 ounces

of fresh Alaska gold.

You don't want to go
over and make a mess.

Add some soda ash.

It just helps clean up the gold.

Once the ingredients are fully mixed...

Let it warm up a little bit.

Heat your oven to
1,947 degrees fahrenheit.

Now we just got to wait for
it to get to its melting point.

Bake your gold for about 30 minutes.

I think we're about there.

And carefully pour
into a fun-shaped mold.

We're messing around
with $200,000 lava, basically.

You don't want to make
any stupid moves right now.

Your bars will be piping hot.

Cool in water before serving.
