The deceased began

This was not a violent
or vicious confrontation.

One man was being verbally provoked
and repeatedly pushed.

He struck a blow
in response to that.

The result was out of all
proportion with the intent.

But in answer
to my specific question,

your professional opinion
is that the blow,

while it may have been provoked
by irritation or anger,

was not struck
in self-defense.
