of mine from Australia,

they're like 14 hours ahead.

I asked him who won.
He's trying to look it up.

I have all of the emotions
running through me.

I'm excited. I'm nervous.

And I'm also to the point
where it's going to be

what it's going to be.

There's nothing more I can do.

Just tell me so I can move
on with my life, good or bad.

It is what it is
at this point.

[man 2]
It's not up to us.
It's up to the judges.

This has been a dream
well before I was in business.

[man 3]
It's going to take a team.

Everybody's expertise,
everybody's input.

[man 2] These cars cannot be
displayed, promoted,

seen by the public until
they arrive at
Detroit Autorama.

[man 3] There's only so many
teams that have put these cars
together,

so it's a great, great,
great opportunity.

[man 2]
We'll build a car that nobody
has ever seen before.

The goal is to build
a Ridler.

[man 3] Masterpiece.

Unbelievable.

[man] This is a big step.

Once the windshield's in,
then a lot of things
can be finalized.

You know, I thought
this fit better.

There's been a lot of stress.
The last minute things

always cause extreme
amount of stress.

I'm so excited to see
what's going to happen with

the gauges, with the joules
and the floating numbers
and stuff.

I had to change the design
just a little bit.

I can't get that pitch,
that bevel like that.

- We can't go.
- Yeah, do that.

Oh, there you go.

Then I'm going to go ahead
and jump in it.

I don't want to burn

I want to see it stop.

- That's a big thing.

All we got to do is one thing.

Pull it out and show that it
starts, moves backwards,

forwards,
under its own brakes,

stops, turns left and right.

Let it do its thing.

It's not seeing a cam signal.

Every time I try and start it
with the brake on in gear,

it won't stay running.
It won't start.

[Dave] Just back it up real
quick. Let me pull it forward
and shut it off.

That's all I got to do.

[Kevin]
You were able to drive it
backwards,

so I felt like the crew chief
in Days of Thunder.

Just get in the high gears!

All I needed to do to pass
this test was to get this car

to drive under its own power
for two feet.

[engine revving]

[Kevin] Pull forward.

[engine revving]

Let's go forward, he said.

[Dave] There's not just
the judges that are going

to show that the car can pass
its tech inspection,

but also about 100 people
with their phones out.

- [Kevin]
Did you invite people?
- [Dave] No, no.

Those are people that
were just setting up the cars.

We got to just pull it
forward.

That's all we got left to do.

But it's just, it doesn't like
the altitude yet.

We're from Utah, 4,600 feet.

It's mad because
of the elevation.

We're good.

[Dave] So good? Okay.
I just don't want to burn
the headers.

We're almost checked.

[Dave]
There's a lot of pressure
on us at this point.

We need one foot.

There's no drive.

We need one foot
so everybody can't talk.

[man] We would have loved
to have been there,
but we were in Dallas.

We're stuck on an airplane.

- We can't even make
a phone call.
- Delays, delays.

It was delay after delay.

[Kevin] There's just no drive.
It slipped loose.

And I don't know
how to get to it.

Like I got reverse neutral
and that's it.

You got to pull that and see
if you can get your hand
in there

- That's what I'm saying.
- Okay.

I can't just slip a jack
underneath this car,

pull a panel,
and make an adjustment.

It has to be done
from the top.

I am sticking my hand
in the console,

and I'm trying to pull
the linkage so we can just get
forward gear,

because we've never jacked up
the car.

There's no way to do it.
It's kind of loose
at the bottom.

[Dave] Okay.

[Kevin] You got reverse.
That's it.

- [Dave] Okay.
- [Kevin] Neutral.

I'm barely getting
reverse now.

Can we reach in with
a screwdriver and push

that cable a little bit more?

[Kevin] This is so tight,
Dave.

No way.

We're right in the middle
of this test,

and honestly, I don't know
what to do.

I can't imagine.

You're really kind of
flying blind.

Kev, what about through here?

- No.
- [Dave]
Which direction does it head?

- [Kevin] It pulls back.
- [Dave] Pulls this way?

- [Kevin] Yeah.

[Kevin] Yeah, all the nuts
off the front.

[Kevin] So we need to pull
the sheathing.

I just went for it.
I didn't know what to do.

And I think if there wasn't
as many people around the car

staring at us,
I probably would have

procrastinated a little bit.

[Dave]
We have an adjustment issue.

It sounds like the cable
just came out of adjustment

on the shifter.

So we got reverse.

Well, it's like I tell all
the contenders,

as long as it moves before
9 o'clock Friday, we're good.

[Dave] Oh, yeah. It'll go.
We've had it running.

We've moved it at
the shop, so.

[Kevin]
The sheathing is pulling down
on the trans,

and you're just not getting
that gear.

Can we pull the cable up
to manually put it into drive?

That's what he's trying
to do right now.

I think we're on the brink
of something.

I really don't know
what I did, honestly.

I got my hand in there,
I got the cable off

of the shifter,
and I'm yanking things around

and sheathing around,
and I feel like it
probably was

in between neutral and drive.

We roll forward two feet.

- We shut her off.

And I'm like,

We did get the car here.

Everything was pretty good.

We got it out of the trailer.

We went to do the test,
pull it forward,
pull it backwards.

Looks like the shifter cable
has slipped somewhere.

I got just enough to get it
to go forward for a second.

And then Butch says,
"You need to do it
one more time."

Butch, are you kidding me?

[engine revving]

Doesn't like this air.

Now start it.

We're going to put it
on the thing.

And then we're going

I mean, obviously,
that's the major portion,

but there is also
a competition of how the car
is displayed.

The display has
to be cutting edge.

It has to be clean.

It needs to bring
the car to life.

That's probably good.

We got to clean the tires.

Let's grab a vacuum.
Let's vacuum these spots up
real good.

they're clean and look over

the car another hundred times
and make sure the judges...

We go to a lot of shows.

We clean a lot of cars.

We're trying to make this one
the cleanest one ever.

to make sure that

it's perfectly cleaned

We have this beautiful
Miss America on display there,

and she's got a huge zit
on her nose.

off the back, unbolt it.

- Yeah.
- And let's get a polish
on the inside.

The license plate, we'd had
a problem with some glue,

and it basically melted
the surface of
the acrylic lens.

The inside of the lens
is kind of cloudy.

We don't like looking at it,
so we're going to try
to fix it.

The rest of it looks wonderful
and clean.

But this acrylic is looking
kind of strange.

There's a couple
little things, dust, whatever.

If we could have made it
out of crystal,

then it would have been
amazing.

But we didn't, so here we are.

Hopefully, it'll come around.

I'm just wiping it again,
just buffing it.

The license plate lens,
you can just see these

fogginess scratches
from trying to polish it.

And it just was
driving me crazy.

The judges, they're looking
for anything wrong.

So we're going to try
and be proactive

to find anything that
we can critique

that's wrong with the car
and make it right
before they start judging.

Been a long time coming.

And we've dreamt of this

Now, I think I first heard
of the Ridler when
I was 15 or 16,

and that's been a couple days.

So to finally make it here
and to bring something that

I feel is a really good
foot forward. Oh, I'm stoked.

As soon as we get done
cleaning,

then we'll be able to enjoy
and relax.

if you wipe it off this

the outside of that.

The inside's as clean
as it's going to get.

on the swelling

that the guys have done.

The car's pretty
impressive underneath.

We definitely want to see it.

right directly under
the center of the car.

[Justin] You can see the whole
front end right there.

[Dave] Let's go six inches
from this edge.

Pull it towards you
just a little bit.

The mirrors had to kind of
add to the car

and be able to walk around
the car and see not just
the top,

not just the inside of
the engine bay,

but the bottom of the car
and be well lit.

See, now we're actually
looking at reflection.

You can see the engine
from this side.

- [Kevin] Yeah, yeah.
- Exhaust all the way down.

- [Kevin] I think
this is perfect.
- [Dave] Absolutely, 100%.

This is the best
looking mirror I've seen
in the whole day.

four and a half years plus

working on hopefully one of
the baddest cars
we've ever built.

is all of these cars are built

at a top level,
and everything's moved around.

One thing that stands out on
this one, killer door handles.

This is a super clean
car, too.

This is a pretty nice '56.

There's no wing window.

[Dave] Yeah, one piece.

[Kevin] Is it bumpers flipped
upside down?

They look different
to you because we always flip

our bumpers upside down.
This one is actually stock.

Did the filler panel,
he brought it up.

See how high he brought
that up?

[Kevin] And look at the trim.

It's off the hood
and on there now.

[Dave] Yeah, that's cool.

[Kevin]
They even gapped it out
like it was part of the hood.

- That's usually attached
to the hood.
- Yeah, I know.

But why would he do that?
Yeah, there's no...

There's no point in asking.

- It's custom.

How's the positraction work
in a mopar?

So you moved his gauges
and all that stuff into

might have been done.
I'm looking at the chassis.

And it's obviously a stock one
you modified, right?

- It's a Roadster.

- And I modified it.

I told the painter
and the other guys with me,

I said, if you don't believe
in miracles,

you better look at that.

your hard work.

the really cool things.

And these guys kept
the fins when
everybody got rid of them.

What's the engine?

[Dave] It's a third gen,
1,000 horsepower.

- It's got a six speed.
- [Kevin] That's super cool.

- I can see the inside
of this thing.
- That's beautiful.

It's got swivel seats.
Did it come with swivel seats?

That's the original seat
from the car.

So are you one
of the builders?

- Yes, I am.
- Oh, that's awesome.

What was one of
the hardest parts about it?

The roof and the glass,
for sure.

[Kevin] I would say just
the sheer size of it.

[man 2] Well, yes.

There's a lot of real estate
there to deal with, right?

[man 2] Everything was so hard
to project because,

you know, you work on
a bunch of cars.

It's like, "Oh, I can spend
the time on a quarter panel."

Everything was times three.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Everything is supersized.
It's almost 19 feet long.

Oh, yeah.
It's like a Cadillac.

A lot of car for a two-door.

[Kevin]
Yeah, it is a lot of car.
That's cool.

[Dave]
What made you pick this car
to build?

[man 2]
Originally, the concept was,
let's build a vintage version

Then it kind of changed.

- As all great projects do.
- Yes, correct.

This one evolved into
something much more.

[Kevin] That's really cool,
really beautiful.

I love the glass.

So the glass is
all flush-mounted.

Now you've got ripped.
There used to be trim
around it, yeah?

[man 2] The bubble shape,
the bulk of them,

is original to
the Chrysler 300.

So they only made 522
of these cars.

Wow.

- So finding parts
was super easy.
- Correct, yeah.

We just poured panels
and poured skins and all that.

Right out of
the magazine, yeah.

We pretty much had
to hand fabricate

the car from about
the mid-belt line down.

And that was kind of the goal
with this car,

was to do a lot of wrong
to make right.

I mean, you don't typically
take a big cruiser like this

and delete all the trim,
and you don't typically put

1,000 horsepower,
and you don't put
a manual in it.

- [Kevin] Right, right, right.
- And we wanted to basically...

push the limits
of what a cruiser could be

and make it more like
a supercar with

what you would typically
do like a Camaro or a Mustang.

[Kevin]
You have to tell us about
the taillights.

The back of the car
is my favorite.

[Kevin] Nice.

[man 2]
They're all CAD designed.

They're loosely based off
of the modern Dodge look...

- [Dave] Mm-hmm, right.
- ...with the halo lens.

Obviously, with them being
hollow,

it's quite a bit different,
but we wanted to somewhat

replicate the newer 300
when we were trying to pull

some of those styling cues in.

- [Dave] So what color is that?
- [man 2] It's kind of like
a titanium silver.

- It's a custom color
we tweaked a bit.
- Custom tweaks, very cool.

Like I said, I don't know
how many guys you got there,

but I know it takes a crew
to build an amazing car
like this, so.

We couldn't do it without
the guys.

I mean, it's just
a beautiful piece of car.

we probably should have

worked on our name
a little bit better.

I've never seen one of
these built before.

So you know, this was actually
a front clip type car.

It's not a full chassis stock.

It's got a camera
that goes all the way
underneath the front seats.

That's why they did
a full perimeter chassis

on the car to get more
strength to it.

This is super cool.

When's the last time
you've even seen one
of these stock?

[Kevin]
Oh, it's been a long time.

[Dave]
It's just a very unique body.

Remember the old Veed windows?

[Kevin] Oh, yeah.

It must have been
a hard build.

There's a lot of pieces
and parts on this car

that are not easy
to replicate.

[Dave] I bet there's nothing
available for the car either.

This is a whole other
challenge, I feel.

- Right.
- Like, these type
of cars are just big.

[Dave] They're so different.

[Kevin] And they're different,
and they've never been
attacked.

Look at how cool
the turn signals are.

- In the light.
- [Dave] Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,

they coped it.
What color would
you call that?

- Banana cream?
- [Kevin] I think the crazy
thing about this color is

I feel like you could tint it
and it could go any way.

It's something that you tweak
just barely and it's gonna go

- one way or the other.
- One direction.

- Totally cool.
- That's--

- Look at his, uh, hood latch.
- I know.

[Dave] Pretty cool. I like it.

The level of difficulty on
that car is big.

Yeah, yeah, big time.

Yeah, it's a beautiful car.

You're going up against
some pretty heavy hitters.

The detail on
the Grade 8 cars, to me,

was over the top.

Twin throttle bodies.

- That's cool.
- It comes up through the hood.

[Dave]
Nice windshield work, too.
That's a tough deal.

Look how nice the headlights
look right there, too.

All flush-mounted in,
flush-mounted the nose.

So I heard this was
a father and son,

and they built it
in their garage.

[Dave] Whose chassis is it?

Martin Morrison. Nice.

- [Dave] LS7.
- [Kevin] Okay, LS7, yeah.

Look at the detail
to the trim.

- [Dave] Mm-hmm.
- [Kevin] There's no bezel.

Yeah.

- [Dave] What year? '59.
- [Kevin] Nine, '59. Yeah.

Are you one of the builders?
It's beautiful.

On the grade 8,
it's beautiful.

And I'll tell you, this car
does not disappoint.

Everywhere you look is, like,
some more cool detail.

[Dave] I'm like, I like
the flush mount stuff.

I like the headlights.
I like the trim.

- [Kevin] What was the hardest
part of the build?
- Getting it done.

- Right.
- I agree.

That was one of
the hardest decisions for me

is I love the stock
big bubble speedo.

I really didn't want
to get rid of it.

That gained seven inches
of steering wheel.

[Dave] Oh, big time.

And I think it actually fits
because it ties in

with the shape on
the headlight and stuff.

That looks like something
I would design.

Yeah.

You ain't got that
many crayons, buddy.

- I'm just kidding.
- He's only got
three colors of crayons,

and he ate half of them.

- What does this button do?
- It ejects the passenger.

- [man] Yeah,
something like that.
- [Dave] Oh, nice.

How far did you blow
the quarters out?

I love the scoops in
the corners at the bottom.

- How long did it take you guys
to build?
- 10 years.

I think this is another one
that something has been

moved around,
and I don't know what it is.

[Dave] How many great aces

For like one hand,
it could be like, plow!

It's like... ow!

[Dave] Obviously, you've used
Cougar front fascias,

rear fascias on
a fastback Mustang.

- No.
- What am I missing?

It's actually a Cougar
to start with.

- Oh.
- It's a Cougar to start with.

We took a Mustang roof
and added it.

Well, that just added
to the difficulty.

- Yes.
- Why didn't you just start
with a Mustang?

It probably would have made
more sense at this point.

Right.

But you don't think of it that
way when you start a project.

Right.

Hand-built porter panels,
of course.

Fenders have been
heavily altered.

- Every panel, really.
- [Kevin] I love the cowl on
the hood line.

That's awesome.

At this level,
you don't really know

what's going on, right?

Until somebody says,
this is what I've done,

because they're executed
so good.

I got to check out
the interior.
I love this color, by the way.

[Dave] Oh, wow.

That is a column mount set
of gauges with sort of

a countersunk space
to just let them live.

[Dave] That is awesome.

And I love your heavy stitch.
That's really cool.

[man] So we had a chance to do
some really, really
funky stuff.

Billet stuff,
3D printed stuff.

We were really pushing
for that prototype look.

- Right.
- Right.

Mercury should have built
this car.

It shouldn't have taken
60 years for us

- to actually build a car...
- [Dave] That could
make the fastback.

- Right?
- I even love the trim on
the doors,

very heavy looking,
but it looks very much like

- it should have been that way.

That's one of the things
is when cars get to this level

and you're dealing
with builders that know

how to finish these off,
they actually do look like

this is the way
they could have came.

And that's where I get
all confused.

I don't know what
they've changed,

what they haven't changed.
And that's how it should be.

- It'll keep you guessing,
right?

- What do you got under
the hood?
- Big old girl.

Big Boss 9 in it.

- [Kevin] Oh, nice.
- [Dave] Far out.

[man] Conceptually speaking,
if we were going to build

the world's greatest Cougar,
it needed one of

- Ford's greatest engines.
- [Kevin] Agreed.

Same with the hood scoop.
Very Ford-esque.

- Stacked over an 8-stacker.
- I love it.

Dimpled it in the middle
just so you know...

- [Dave] It's super rad.
- [man]...it's monkey business
going on there.

- The devil's in the details.
- [Kevin] Yeah,
and it's super clean.

I wouldn't expect anything
less from you, bud.

I mean, everything is just
so finished and looks right.

[Dave] That's actually
a really cool little detail.

I love the school bus
yellow accent

and the satin hoop
with a polished face.

Didn't recognize that
at first.

In fact, it just sneaks up
on you,

but it adds in to a lot of
the other details

where you've got
that silver mat.

And what do they say
from here?

- I don't know.
- To the death.

Oh, no. Sorry.

- I was thinking of
something else.

judges should be coming around

pretty much right about now.

And basically,
we're going to walk
them around

the car, tell them
what we built,

get them really familiar
with what the build was

when we started 4.5 years ago.

Once you make it in
the grade 8,

they schedule a time for them
to come look at the car.

Come on in, fellas.

[Kevin]
They're not going to guess
what you've done to your car.

They want you to take
30 minutes to 45 minutes

and show them what
you've done.

Yeah, it's time
to show off, really.

The fabrication with
the sheets of 80 thou
aluminum,

T6061, four by 10 sheets.

That's what this car
started as.

I wasn't nervous about
Dave being able to do
the presentation

'cause I've seen him
and he could talk the ear off

of anybody.

This is an all-aluminum
Australian 9.2 liter V12

from the LS V12.

I kept the line going straight
down the side glass,

the shadow box,
and the exhaust.

All of those line up
perfectly.

All of the bolts on
the entire car

are EDM laser etched
on the inside.

You can't see any of it.

They're not looking for
what's right on the car.

It's already all right
if you got in the grade eight.

They're trying to find
anything wrong with it.

You can't tell where
the grill starts and stops

because of the reflection.

When you start describing,
well, we know you guys

were looking for problems
in our door jams
for bear latches,

so we didn't do bear latches.

We did air chucks.

Why'd you do that?
Because it has
a built-in spring.

When you push it in,
it locks in.

When you release it,
it pops it out.

It's got the spring.
It works perfectly.

Oh.

I was like,
that's a genius stroke, right?

Wanted to do it perfect.

the engineering,
that's what they're most
interested in

and finding out
who went through
the most trouble

This is also kind of
a cool little trick.

It's got a tilt wheel,
not tilt column.

The gauges are white gold
and diamonds.

We're trying to accomplish
something

that hadn't been seen before
and build our ultimate car

that maybe could be
the ultimate car
they ever see.

The wheels.

I reinvented the wheel.

There's no straight lines
under the bottom of this car.

Gets 28 miles to the gallon,
and she can be yours today

for $1999.95.
I'm kidding.

I was super nervous,

but I was also just
so excited.

Just to be in that situation
and the culmination

of all of our efforts,
you never know

what's going to happen.

He's a salesman,
so hopefully

he sold them on it.

This is probably the greatest
hot rod show in the world.

This show is known
for the Ridler Award.

It's creativity,
degree of difficulty,

engineering,
and overall quality
of fit and finish.

This is the Oscar.

[Kevin]
I have all of the emotions
running through me.

I'm excited. I'm nervous.

And I'm also to the point
where it's going to be

what it's going to be.
There's nothing more I can do.

Just tell me so I can move on
with my life, good or bad.

To get to do this right now,
it's a dream come true.

I might have been cherishing
it a little bit more.

I was just taking it in.

I just found out a friend
of mine from Australia,

they're like 14 hours ahead.

I asked him who won.
He's trying to look it up.

It is what it is
at this point.

It's not up to us.
It's up to the judges.

I can tell you that there is
an issue in the world

that has higher quality cars.

And the kind of judging
we have here is just superb.

I think I closed
the circulation out
of Kevin's leg.

I caught myself three
or four times.

I looked over,
and I actually had
Kevin's leg.

- And I was like, "Aw, sorry."
- [Kevin] Are you nervous?

I feel like you're nervous.

- That was weird, dude.
- [all laughing]

I was there for him.

Okay, you're a good friend.

The cars around this show
this year were better than

we've ever had before.

So if you're a grade 8 member
this year, you made it.

I mean, it's just you're part
of the grade 8.

You don't need
to understand yet.
It is incredible.

I was just nervous,
waiting, wishing, hoping.

All right, well, I'm supposed
to give an award here.

Anybody ready to hear

You don't want to be creative

You feel like
you can come back
and face everybody.

And I just didn't have another
out other than winning.

That was the only option.

We always talk about there is
no perfect car.

- that we've ever seen
to that level.

Well, forget the bar.

- It can't go that high.

I felt like I had
a massive wave of relief

just crash over
my entire body.

I'm relieved that we made it.

I'm relieved that
we won the Ridler.

I'm relieved that everyone's
living their dream.

I'm relieved that
we're going down in history

as the Ridler winners.

We've actually made it here
to Detroit.

We competed at
the highest level,

the most honored trophy in
automotive customizing.

We did it.

25 years in the making,
all that hard work,

and without you guys,
we would not be here.

It's been an honor
to be able to build the car

with a great team of people
that really had a lot of
passion about

the car.

Had a lot of care about it.
We put our very best
foot forward

every single day.

We accomplished things,
we overcame things

to walk into the Cobo Center
and compete
