September 1875, a few miles across the

Rio Grand, McKenzie and his raiders,

again under secret orders, had crossed

the border. The mission, wipe out Val

Carter, who had left a sensational trail

of blood and violence in central Texas.

>> They can't be here, pal. They ain't

allowed on this territory.

>> They're here just the same.

>> What about the law?

>> I don't think those bullets know

anything about the laws.

Well placed, sir.

>> Just so they're pinned. We've lost our

surprise, but we'll still have it out

with them. We will, that is, if a

Mexican border patrol doesn't show up.

>> Simpson.

>> There's a hole up there on their left.

See if you can circle around and get

into it.

>> Right.

>> Cover him.

>> McKenzie's surprise attack had failed.

Though Carter was now pinned down, both

sides risked discovery by the Mexican

Border Patrol. Aware of this risk,

McKenzie attempted to encircle Carter to

finish him quickly.

>> Hold tight here, Lieutenant.

>> Right, sir.

>> Peterson, come with me.

Border Patrol. We've got a scatter

round. This side of the river.

>> McKenzie's leaving with one lesson he

came in with.

I want him alive. Stop looking.

Where's Simpson?

>> He hasn't shown up, sir. He must have

been hit. He'll make it back if he's

alive.

>> We haven't much time, sir.

>> I can't take a chance on Simpson being

captured. We'll have to go back for him.

But

>> sir, the border patrol.

>> You're right. But we haven't much time,

Lieutenant. Let's go.

That's the last of them, sir. We won't

have to worry about the border patrol.

>> Good.

>> Lieutenant, have the men search this

area.

>> Check every inch of this terrain.

>> quiet, sir. Carter must have moved on.

>> Look here.

That's blood.

There's no trail leading away from here.

>> Maybe Carter already has him. Or

>> maybe Simpson slipped away. He knows how

to cover a trail and he left this marker

for us.

>> Simpson's horse.

I've got to know if Simpson's alive or

not. With these border patrols in the

area, I can't operate with this many

men. Have the raiders go back to the

fourth and you and I'll reconider

together.

>> Yes, sir.

Wonder what hit this place.

Sure made a wreck of it.

Well, it'll have to do for the night.

>> Are we risking quite a lot, sir? Staying

on this side of the river?

>> I bet we are, Lieutenant. We're risking

everything. We have no choice. Simpson

is captured by Carter. Might well mean

the end of all our raids into Mexico.

>> We might not be able to prevent that,

sir.

>> As long as there's a chance, we've got

to keep trying.

>> Simpson isn't caught. He still might

make it back on his own. He's been well

trained.

>> Yeah, but unfortunately, he wasn't

trained with a bullet in his body. When

a man has to fight both fatigue and

pain, you can't depend on his wit or his

resistance. Simpson's going to need

both.

But what about you, sir? Never use him.

>> Still,

even if Carter does capture Simpson,

there's no proof he was ordered here as

a soldier,

he'd swear to Carter or anybody else he

was a deserter.

>> Yeah, maybe so, but I can't depend on

it.

I can't risk our whole operation here in

the Southwest on the ability of one

wounded man to resist.

Strange as it may seem, Tom,

Simpson is now our enemy, till he's

either back in our hands or dead.

>> What do you think Carter will do to him,

sir?

>> Anything he has to to smash me and the

raiders.

He can turn him over to the Mexican

government, or he can turn him over to

the American government.

The storm that follows will

wipe out the raiders.

I hate to think it, sir. We're better

off finding Simpson dead than with

Carter.

>> Kenzie's already put a crimp in our

operation just being here in Mexico.

Yeah, that raider is my one chance to

get McKenzie out of my hair for good and

for all.

we didn't find hiding a hair that

raided.

>> I didn't expect you would.

But we did find Colonel McKenzie

himself.

>> That's right. Here in the area searching

for that raider same as we are. I left

one of the men to trail him.

Oh, this is better than I expected.

Sure, McKenzie will get that man of his,

and we'll [snorts] be right there to

pick them both up.

Morning of the second day, deep in

Mexican territory.

McKenzie and Lieutenant Paxton continued

their desperate search for the lost

raider. More than a man's life was

involved. The very existence of the

raiders of Colonel McKenzie himself

depended upon the recovery of Trooper

Simpson. Stay right where you are,

Lieutenant. I'm being followed by one of

Carter's men.

>> You better get out of here, Colonel.

>> Yeah, I know. But I also know that

Simpson's alive. I picked up his

markers. They're pointed west. He can't

have gotten very far from here.

>> What about Carter? I'll circle around,

then come back and continue to follow

Simpson's markers. But when we do find

Simpson, our work is really cut out for

us. He won't be in any condition to

travel by himself. You'll have to get

the raiders to help us get out of

Mexico.

>> I can get out of here without being

seen. Once you find Simpson, what

happens then?

>> I'll get him back to this spot somehow.

Meet me here with the raiders. Ride

hard, Lieutenant.

Those markers helped. Now, tell me,

I had a pretty rough time just making it

to that back door when Carter's men got

here.

>> Now, listen to me. You've got to walk

out of here. I can't let them capture

you. You understand, Samson?

>> I know, sir, but I don't think I'm going

to be able to make it back to the river.

>> You won't have to go that far. I've sent

Lieutenant Paxton back for the raiders,

but we've at least got to get as far as

the spot where he last saw me. And we've

got to hurry. Now that Carter knows

we're both in the neighborhood, he won't

stop searching this area till he finds

one or the other of us. Now, come on.

>> If [snorts] the colonel will forgive me,

he needn't worry. After my enlistment's

over, I figured I might be living in

Mexico.

The town of Brackettville. resort of

thieves, renegades, outlaws, and a few

honest men desperately trying to develop

the beginning of democracy on the

frontier.

>> [music]

>> Turn around little boy blue.

I don't like to draw on a man unless he

draws on me first.

But I will if I have to.

Like I said, I don't like to see people

whispering with soldiers.

Same thing's going to happen to you.

I'll go tell the sheriff there's been

Bracketville have to learn. I don't like

them sending word every little thing I

do to Colonel McKenzie. They have to

I'm a lawyer and I'll tell him no such

thing.

You've got to take my advice.

how the two of us couldn't take over

this town.

we won't take it over. Colonel McKenzie

it's working out.

Like you said, they should make the

colonel put Braavville off limits to his

soldier boys. And that's the way it's

got to be if we're going to have the

privacy we need.

>> I just remember Johnny, we're walking a

>> Now look, you just go get that sheriff.

The morning after the murder, Ran

McKenzie set out for the town of

Brackettville on the sad mission of

reclaiming the dead boy's body. No call

to get mad with me. I've always tried to

work with you. Give you all the

information I could, same as some others

here in town. But no, it it's different.

Why? Because Johnny links a fast gun.

Do you know what that is, Colonel?

A fast gun.

That's a new profession here in the

Southwest.

A lot of towns have them. They take

over.

Johnny Link with his gun. Dutch Herald

with the law. They've got their hand in

every legitimate till in Bracketville.

Maybe in the whole territory for all I

know. But But you have law in this

territory. You have due process. You

have a judge.

>> Yes, we have a judge. He rides circuits

through here every 5 weeks. By the time

he heard any case against Johnny Link,

every possible witness would be

intimidated or dead.

>> I tell you, Colonel, we've got to find a

way to

>> Excuse me, sir.

>> Well, Sergeant,

>> I told the men not to shoot, sir. I

haven't yet, but you know how they are

sometime.

>> What are you talking about?

>> A civilian name of Link, sir.

>> Well, we was just finishing loading the

body on the wagon when this Mr. Link

came along and ordered all the civilians

off the street. Said there might be a

jail, Colonel. If he's done anything

wrong or illegal, I'm responsible.

just an elected sheriff. Some of our

folks, well, they've they think that you

exceeded your authority.

>> Dutch Herman, for instance, his lawyer.

>> Oh, a lot of folks seem to agree with

Dutch.

>> Yeah, I can imagine who these folks are.

>> They're citizens. They vote.

my orders as an officer

direct me to encourage democracy

wherever I find it in this territory.

It's for that reason, that reason alone,

that I'm going to release Johnny Link.

custody into your civilian custody.

Bracketville. Democratically elected

personnel.

every fast gun in the territory to

Bracketville in two, three days.

magnet, attracting professional killers

Corporal Dixon, and three other troopers

will accompany me. We're further going

to see that Bracketville elects a new

sheriff.

>> Yes, sir.

>> Now, get that civilian scout going. I

want him there before us.

>> Yes, sir.

Sergeant, when I thought of the army, I

thought of you.

>> Calling my raiders together secretly,

sending threatening letters to

civilians.

>> Nevertheless, I wish I'd thought of it

first.

>> Sir,

>> you've devised a perfect strategim for

handling our problem.

>> I have, sir.

>> You're back on duty. Oh, and uh alert

the raiders. We'll be riding together in

2 3 days.

your hearts by one of my troopers.

I'm sorry I can't accommodate you

gentlemen in your games of fast draw.

Unfortunately, my job here is not to

play games.

Now, if you'll all step forward and drop

your weapons here at my feet.

All right, Mr. Link. Now we're evenly

matched because I'm already drawn.

Will you fight out here or shall I come

in and get you?

Fort Clark. The year 1874.

Colonel Reynold Slidel McKenzie

commanding. The pressure on his underman

garrison was growing day by day. The

1500 mile perimeter, which was the

responsibility of the fourth cavalry,

was becoming increasingly difficult to

patrol.

Each morning light saw the troopers

leave the post. Each twilight saw less

and less of them return.

Heat. Heat.

In the year of 1874, this portion of

Southwest Texas was a cruel and savage

land, and peace was to be won only at a

price. The men of Fort Clark paid the

price against renegades, outlaws, and

Indians. As the days passed, the price

mounted, and among a small group of men

in McKenzie's command, the word mutiny

was heard.

>> [music]

>> Captain. Uh, did you talk to him like

you said you would?

>> Not yet, but I will now.

>> Any word yet?

>> Not yet, sir.

>> Major Edmonson's patrol is 4 days

overdue.

I gather he ran into Bo Krueger. Or

Krueger ran into him.

>> Sir Jones is outside.

You said you'd pass sentence today.

>> Oh, yes.

>> All right, Sandyman.

>> Yes, sir.

I'd like to say something first, sir.

>> Certainly.

>> Jones has been with us for 3 years. He

has an excellent record. He has many

friends.

>> Yes, I'm sure of that. But Trooper Jones

is a soldier. He's responsible for his

own actions. May I remind you, this is

the United States Army, not a not a

finishing school.

The trooper was tried and found guilty

by a court marshal. It's my duty to pass

sentence.

If you find that sentence too severe, I

suggest that you add it to the report

that you and Major Edmonson are planning

to send to Washington.

I'm aware, captain, that you're asking

that I be relieved of my command. I'm

aware that you and Major Edmonson find

my discipline much too severe. You're

entitled to that opinion. You're

entitled to send in such a report. I

must remind you, however, that it's your

responsibility to take the consequences

of such action.

>> Colonel. Lieutenant Jar's patrol is

back. The lieutenant's right outside.

Edmonson's patrol?

>> Well, we didn't exactly find them, sir.

>> One of Krueger's men rode up under a

white flag. They're holding three

prisoners from Edmonson's patrol.

>> And they'll release them unharmed in

return for safe passage across the Rio

Grand with their stolen cattle, no

doubt.

It says you have two hours, sir, to

agree.

Major Edmonson must have ridden into an

ambush. There are three men left alive.

My patrol found the other three.

>> You told anyone else about this note?

Any of the men in your patrol?

>> No, sir. I was afraid they'd want to

ride in and try and save the prisoners.

Major Edmonson might be one of the

prisoners.

>> Major Edmonson is dead.

>> Well, how do you know, sir? It says

there

>> all these men are dead, Lieutenant. The

entire patrol. Oh, but sir,

>> Edmonson's patrol was 4 days overdue. If

Krueger took anyone alive and wanted to

make a deal with us, we'd have heard

from him before. Now, this is a trick, a

bluff.

>> Those men must be alive, sir. What other

reason would make Krueger send a man

down out of the hills with that?

>> I can think of six or 700 reasons. All

of them slow-footed, stolen cattle.

Cattle that can't run or dodge or fight.

He's trapped with those cattle. He's

vulnerable, and he knows it. This is his

answer.

>> Why hasn't he tried this before?

>> He didn't have to. He knew of every

movement of our patrols from one of our

own troopers.

Lieutenant, can you imagine what would

happen if I if I give into this? The

next time he raids, he'd he'd really

take hostages. He'd take civilians. He'd

make the whole the whole garrison at

Fort Clark helpless, useless.

>> I hadn't thought of that, sir.

>> No. Neither will a lot of the other

officers and men at Fort Clark. That's

why it's imperative that we say nothing

about this note to anyone.

>> No one. Why, sir?

>> Because too many men will believe this

lie. They'll believe it beyond all

reason because the next time it could be

them. These men are dead. They've been

dead for 4 days. If you say so, sir.

>> Yeah. Why are just four or five of us

moving out? Why not the whole force? You

know, the way I got it figured, the old

man's fine. I got a clean shot at

Krueger.

>> Look, I don't make up the orders, Fox. I

>> Who said Major Edmonson and his patrol

But you got a reasonable good chance

you're riding with McKenzie.

Lieutenant Jared found only three

bodies. Now, maybe Edmonson and the

other two crawled away to hide. Or maybe

they were taken. Maybe they're

prisoners.

there's a chance somebody's still alive,

take orders. Do what you're told.

>> Maybe we're waiting to be sure

everyone's dead.

The men with him, though ruled by a

you're told. If there was another way

for Mackenzie to do this, he'd have done

>> Out there watching Krueger. Two of

Edmonson's patrol were taken prisoner.

>> They're still alive.

The thing McKenzie had feared most had

happened. A raider had been captured

alive below the border, and the Mexican

government had demanded a complete and

thorough investigation of the

circumstances.

And by the time I got back to the

horses, a federalis had me surrounded,

held me for two days. If I'd known

they're going to bring me back here, I

would have told him about Tobin

>> and have him stand trial, too.

Davis, the treaty between Mexico and the

United States forbids any soldier from

crossing the border. That's why General

Gonzalez insisted on this court marshal.

>> Yes, sir.

I reckon it's better this way.

Tobin's safe, ain't he? He's safe enough

at the moment, but you're not.

Everything depends on what happens at

this court. Marshall,

>> what do you mean, Colonel?

>> Adam, there are only 23 of us. 23

raiders who know what we've been up to.

Everyone else is going to testify

against you according to the way things

looked on the surface. That's why this

court marshal may well, it may reach

some pretty false conclusions.

>> They're going to tear you apart.

>> More than a few Apaches have tried the

same thing. I'm still here. I ain't

worried.

>> Davis, this is not a fight with knives

and guns. There's more than one way to

cut a man.

>> Well, now don't you give it no thought,

I hope you remember what you've just

said. I hope you remember it. When the

going gets real tough, a lot depends on

you, Davis. The very life of the Raiders

depends on you.

the responsibility for this situation

rests entirely upon your shoulders. The

government cannot allow it to become a

cause of war with Mexico.

And if the existence of the raiders

becomes known during this trial, you

yourself will face court marshall. The

president cannot support you.

received those secret orders from the

president, I was aware that something

like this could and probably would

happen. I'm perfectly willing to take

full responsibility.

>> Also, as president of the court, my

decision will of necessity rest entirely

upon the evidencees presented.

Corporal Davis?

>> Yes, I did.

are under secret orders from the

>> As far as he or any other raider knows,

these foray across the river are

quite a bit depends on the outcome of

this trial.

>> Quite a bit, sir.

most important thing being the very

existence of the Raiders.

[snorts and clears throat]

So much good has been done that well it

would be wrong if this were the end. Uh

the president has often told me that the

raiders live or die entirely with you

that he would never reactivate them if

if anything were to happen.

I wonder if Trooper Davis knows how

important he is. Odd how throughout

history so many vast enterprises have

depended on just one man.

>> Colonel, this trial judge advocate.

>> Uh, Lieutenant Fren, he's a good man.

>> He is not a raider.

>> Sir, I couldn't ask a raider to be a

prosecutor.

>> Of course. And the defense council.

>> Lieutenant Alexander also a good man. He

too knows nothing of the Raiders.

Unless uh Corporal Davis in discussing

the case with him has said something.

>> Well, in that case, wouldn't Lieutenant

Alexander have come to me for

verification?

>> Possibly. He intends to do that at the

trial. He's listed you as a witness for

the prosecution.

In as much as this is a general court

marshal and the very life of the accused

is at stake, I as commander in this area

am disqualified to hear the case. This

court will be presided over by the

Secretary of War, Mr. James Cameron. His

decision and that of the court will be

final, subject only to review by the

President of the United States.

Lieutenant Ferron, would you read the

charges and specifications to the court?

>> This general court marshal is called to

order this 23rd day of October 1876 to

hear the case of Adam Davis, Corporal

Regiment, Secretary of War James

Cameron, presiding the accusations to

which Corporal Adam Davis was discovered

illegally under arms and in uniform

without proper authority within the

confines of the country of Mexico by

Federalis forces. This action known by

the accused to be such as to endanger

the peace existing between that country

and the United States.

>> Lieutenant Ferron, you may open your

>> Mr. President, officers of the court, in

my mind, this is clear-cut, but I also

believe there is an insidious side to

this case, and I intend to prove it.

made to account for the handling of his

command. My apologies if I appear to be

doing that, but I am trying to establish

a point.

>> What is that point, Lieutenant? I'm

trying to show that on several occasions

it was necessary for the commanding

officer himself to discipline him.

>> In general, let me say that discipline

is usually handled by my chain of

command. However, with reference to the

point you wish to establish, it's true

that on occasion I exercise my

prerogative and discipline the men

personally, uh, Corporal Davis, no more

and no less than any other man.

>> Yes, of course.

Colonel, how would you rate the accused

as a soldier?

I had always rated Corporal Davis as an

extremely brave and able soldier.

>> Had until now.

that there was a insidious side of this

getting at with his whole line of

to be gotten from the Indians. I'll even
