Ever since Zooey's family lost
their house to fires,

I've been helping
with the rebuild.

I haven't even been here yet

to see all the fire damage,
and the house is gone.

six years of memories here.

They've had this place
for over 40 years.

We'll be right about
in that area there, I would say.

Be careful.

Zooey was raised in this house.

Yeah, I did see photos of,
like, the debris.

It seemed like they didn't have
very much time to get out.

It's pretty heartbreaking.

That's why I'm helping,
you know,

the neighbors over here.

I'm helping another person who's
about four or five houses up.

We even have new clients
over here.

Addam and Nancy,
they spent 2.6 on a new home.

They were in a rental,
and it burned,

and they lost everything,
and that.
-Really?

But they found
a house that now they think

maybe it was like
an emotional decision,

and they don't know
if they can make it work.

So Drew and I are gonna try
and help as many families here

as we possibly can.

be on board for this project.

So you know this area
really well?

I was kind of raised here.

My dad had a place here.

So when we saw this house for
sale, we jumped on buying it.

But it needs work
before we can move in.

[Jonathan] How did you decide
on this house?

This was actually a miracle,
I think.

We have a really great realtor.

[Addam]
We were lucky enough to find
a house that was still standing

that we really loved.
-[Jonathan] Obviously...

-A lot has happened

and continues to happen
in this area.

We've been living in a --
in our rental since

the fire, right?
-Yeah.

So January 7th, 2025.

The day started off
like any other day,

except it was
our kid's birthday.

So I even made all these
baked goods for his class,

took him to school.

I remember it being
a really windy day, though.

We turned on the news,
and then that's where we saw,

oh, there's a fire
really close by.

And then I remember we got email
notifications from the school.

So picked up our kid
and he said,

"I swear I did not wish
this for my birthday."

We didn't realize how serious
it was and very surprised

at how quickly it spread.

But leaving, it was just --
it was like an apocalypse.

Like it was so crazy, right?

-Like how -- like --
-Yeah.

Just random places just
on fire, like cars on fire,

like the parks on fire.
-We lost everything.

[Nancy sniffles]
So...

As we decided to leave,
we only packed four days

of clothes, and we thought,
oh, we would just take a little

trip and then come back
to our house.

-Yeah.
-[Nancy] Mm-hmm.

Little did we know
that we wouldn't have a place

to come back to.
-Happened so fast that --

So it's difficult
to drive, right?

Like, because we're always
passing it.

Even with -- when we have
our kid with us,

we try to take the long way
so he doesn't need to see it.
-[Drew and Jonathan] Yeah.

We found all of our things
melted together,

pieces of clothing
that were half-burnt,

and there was nothing left.

Thinking about,
like, everything new

that we need to get is
extremely overwhelming.

I think especially after
losing everything in the fires,

you know, we don't wanna keep
feeling like guests where

we are, and so having a home
where we can feel comfortable

and feel at home is
really important.

I'm assuming this place was
smoke-damaged after the fire?

-[Nancy] Yes -- mm-hmm.
-So is that why?

-Because it looks all freshly
painted and everything.
-[Nancy] Mm-hmm.

-It was all --
-Yeah.

[Jonathan] So it's already
been remediated.

It has been, yes.

Do you already have ideas
of what you wanna do?

I think we definitely need
some help, especially

in getting into the nitty-gritty
of designs, because Nancy and I

kind of have a little bit
of trouble agreeing on things.

Like, it's very picturesque.
But I'd like to see inside.

they've redone all the floors.

Have they redone
kitchens and bathrooms?

of freshly painted.

But overall inspections,
everything shows

that it's a very --
it's in good shape.

What would you guys
like to see?

I'd like to see
a really nice

big white sectional here.

Like something that's like
cozy, homey, coastal.

Yeah.

How do you feel about
a white sectional?

Not very good at all.

I just love -- these
mid-century-modern homes --

I just love the high ceiling...

-...and a statement fireplace.

-What do you think of this?
-I love it.

I love that it
matches the outside.

I think it could be cleaned up
a little bit, but I really like

that kind of feel
that it gives.

-Really classic style.

What are you thinking?

Is it classic or is it
just really old?

When you're having arguments
in the house, is this pretty

much what it's over?
"I like newer."

"I like traditional."

-Yes, definitely.

I like things like
leather couches

and things that look classic,
classic colors and things.

-Like a 90-year-old Englishman.
-That's OK.

We can find a good blend
between the two of you.

In this situation, though,
I'm gonna lean

in this direction.

I think it would actually
be a shame and not a great use

of funds to remove the stone
completely, because it does tie

into the era of the home.

But I do think there's a lot
we could do to make it feel

fresh and contemporary.

What are other things
for you that are important?

With -- like, how would
you lay this out?

[Nancy]
Our goal is that we can have

a lot of friends
and family come over.

That's what I love about this
style of architecture.

These houses were designed
for entertainment.

[Drew]
Oh, yeah.

This is more than enough space
to put a nice big table.

Is there -- is there another
space on the other side?

-Oh, yeah.
-[Addam] Yes.

Oh, OK, so you have,
like, split dining...

wait, is that meant to be
a living room or a dining room?

That looks like a dining room

as well as this is
a dining space.

-I think originally this was
sup -- is the dining space.
-Yeah.

So, yeah, we had no idea.
What do we do with this space?

Like, do we just make that
the formal living room and then

make this the living area?

Are you wanting
to keep the shutters?

-Lose the shutters?
-I love the shutters.

-She hates them.
-[Nancy] I hate the shutters.

It's gonna take, like,
20 minutes just to open

everything up, right?

Rather than just having
curtains that can

function similarly.
-[Jonathan] Yeah.

After our condo was affected
by the fires, everything has

to be picked anew.

And with a couple like us
who have very strong opinions

about what styles
we like, and...

it can be very difficult
to pick each of those things.

I definitely feel like
the Property Brothers are gonna

save us from those disputes.

What's your budget
for renovation?

-It's $90,000.
-Oh, wow.

Yeah, these blinds are great.

I think we should keep these
blinds exactly as they are.

This would be something,
you know, we'll see how

and what needs to be done,
but how much that would cost.

It would be nice
to put in some drapery.

I wouldn't do a living room,
living room, though,

because if you have
the living rooms this attached,

then it's competing, right?

If you're trying to watch
something there and here,

it's gonna be
really annoying.

-Hmm.
-Yeah, that's a good point.

Those two areas are connected
more than what these
two areas are,

so there's probably a bit
a better sound barrier

if there's a TV back here.

Can I complain about
one thing?

Bathroom?
Oh, that's a pantry.

Oh, that's a teeny tiny.

This also bugs me
when you see --

oh, it's not too bad.
I thought it was deeper.

But when you see, like,
space you can't even get to.

[Nancy] Question, if we were
to have the dining table here,

is it gonna -- because what
I like about our space, too,

which I know
makes it really difficult,

is that you have access
to the outdoors.

The only thing I'm seeing here
with the layout of your kitchen

that might be -- because if
you want a decent sized to sit

10 people, like you're saying,
it's gonna start to feel tight.

Over there, you could fit
a massive dining table.

Like, that could be
a really impressive,
gorgeous dining table,

because it's meant for dining.
-[Nancy] OK.

I mean, I do think this feels
like a table here,

just not --
it's not gonna be massive.

What would you envision
would make this kitchen

work better for you?

[Nancy] Hmm, I mean,
definitely need more storage.

[Jonathan]
I assume you would want all
new cabinetry, no matter what.

[Nancy] Yeah, I mean, they
don't really open very well.

-Also, that's awkward.

Yeah.

The problem with this house,
and I'll just tell you this

now, there's not
a lot we can do

as far as opening up
the kitchen.

I don't know that there would
be structure over here.

I don't think so.

There's definitely no structure
on this side.

But if you lose any of these
walls, all of a sudden,

we don't have anywhere to put
appliances and cabinets.

-[Addam] Yeah.

So unless we completely
relocate the kitchen.

And then I can guarantee you
that $90,000 is not gonna be

enough to do that.
-[Addam] Gonna be enough.
Yeah.

What is the timeline for you?
Like, how quick --

I assume you want to get in,
especially with your son,

and start enjoying the space.
-[Nancy] Yeah.

I think we want
to be in by Christmas

or at least
before Leo's birthday.

which was the day of the fires.

it would be nice to be able
to have his birthday party here.

It would be really nice to

in his new home,

First of all,
we've got to figure out

what the heck to do
with this kitchen.

Obviously, new appliances,
better integrated.

You know, we can figure out
furniture plan.

That's not a problem.
That's the easy part.

It's right now figuring out

what we can realistically do
within your timeline

and within your budget.

And it's not probably gonna be
everything we'd love to do.

I'd like to just walk around,
take some measurements,

and Drew had a lot

of good ideas for the place.

They seemed to really
understand the overall layout

really hard to imagine

what we should use
each room for.

if there's a great
solution for it.

I mean, we pretty much have
to keep the kitchen where it is.

could be a good dining area.

and width of that space

than the length and width

of that space over there
for your living room.

I still feel that the dining
room should be over there.

If you decide that you want

I think you made a good point
about the size here.

It doesn't look as big as

we might need it to be
to fit how many people

we wanna have.

like to see?

I'm still wondering what to do
about storage space.

Storage is obviously really,
really important to you.

So that's gonna be number
one on my bucket list.

you feel there's enough storage

in this space.

So here's the plan to maximize
Addam and Nancy's budget.

The fireplace stays,
but we'll give it a refresh

by whitewashing the stone,

re-grouting
and installing a mantle.

We're gonna sand the white
paint off the beams to draw

your eye up
to the high ceilings.

And they've decided that
the dining area will now be

to the right of the kitchen.

To save costs there,
we're gonna keep the kitchen

layout as is, but it's gonna

get a full makeover
with all new finishes.

Plus a statement breakfast bar
that seamlessly connects

to the adjoining space
where we're adding a wall

of extra cabinetry to deliver
on the serious storage

Nancy needs
and coffee bar to boot.

Finally, for those big family
get-togethers, a cozy,

informal dining nook
adds bonus seating

without sacrificing style.

I love this, and this is
exactly what we wanted,

so I'm glad we did it.

And now I think we can jump
ahead and get you some options.

I think that this really
helped us discover a lot

of the gaps that we have,
like the, you know,

storage, but specifically,

like, even just walking in.
It's very immersive, right?

So it gives you a much better
idea of, like, what to expect.

I think it also opened up
a lot of new ideas, too.

I think looking at everything
is -- is kind of overwhelming.

We've never done such
a big renovation before,

and, you know, we never
really thought we would have to

until we lost our place
in the fires.

And we opened the wall up

This is a massive post
that comes down to a footing.

open this up just to the edge
of the post?

It's giving you like a
half view to here,

but you would have
more light in the kitchen.

It's really about what would
make you happy long-term.

This is the time to do
any of it.

That's definitely something
I want to leverage as much as

we can in this house
is the natural lighting.

a decision that we do wanna

get rid of the walling

So Zooey and I agree on most
things, but what I have found,

especially when we were
designing our own place,

if I approved ten things,
she would change nine of them.

If she approved ten things,

I would only change
maybe three of them.

So it made more sense for me
to see what she thought first,

and then I would weigh in.

would that work with you guys?

Yeah, I think that's kind
of the same thing for us.

I think that just considering
all these different tones,

they're very similar.

This one adds a little bit
of an extra layer to it.

vivid veining.

I kind of like this one better,
too, though.

So I do like that you have
this brightness.

It helps bounce light around.

Cabinetry, I would keep
lighter, too, especially if

we have to keep any
of those walls.

You just wanna make sure it
doesn't start to feel closed in

because it is already
a fairly small footprint.

Ideally, in your dream world,

where would you sit
for color for your cabinets?

-This is the challenging part.
-[Nancy] Yeah,
because I always --

I would like something
like a simple color, like --

like a white or an off-white.

That -- that's
the instructions for the...

So in my mind, I think what
would probably work best,

somewhere in here where it's
like a slightly warmer white.

That could look very
beautiful and sophisticated.

-It's gonna be very elegant.

One of the things that actually
made it a little bit easier

in pulling together
the style was the fact

that you're keeping
your existing floors.

So we know you have this
beautiful warm brown tone.

In fact, why don't we use
that as a part of our --

as we're building this up here.

So there, all of a sudden
you can see that complements

each other really, really well.

Then we pull in some
of our other fabrics here.

Look how things are
starting to look.

I think that looks really good

considering that we have
the dark floor, making sure

that I think kind
of works with it.

If this is your base that
you guys are all comfortable

with, let us play with the other

things that are a part of it.

It's gonna be

for us, it really is making
every little bit better for us,

dealing with what happened
with the fires.

It's basically two cabinets
that are exactly the same.

And these are only our base.

Like, we're still gonna be
painting and doing all

the things that we're

having to have somebody else
come in and do it.

if we're trying to save money,

then we'll get
flat-pack cabinets.

And the quality can
still be really great,

but it's our labor
to assemble all the boxes,

assemble all the drawers,
and then put them in.

So either we're paying a custom
millwork shop to do that,

or we're hiring Nancy and Addam.

Do you know offhand what

the size of this
was gonna be?

The original idea was
the coffee station is centered

on the overhang
of the bar here.

But then that leaves
a wasted space over here.

And I know she wants
pantry storage.

What if we just add
an additional 24-inch pantry

on this side and match
it on that side?

So this is a whole wall.

I built it in basically

and it's actually about
the same depth, too.

our dog kind of saved our lives,

because if we would have stayed
there much longer,

who knows
what would have happened.

You just feel bad about
the whole devastation

for the entire city, and that's
part of why we feel --

we feel like we need to
come back to the community.

that we finally have a house
that we can live in.

isn't just redoing a house.

to our community.

That was my major complaint,
was always complaining about

this pantry because it was just
a very shallow -- like, I feel

like it even looks deeper
than what it originally was.

So we cheated forward
the drawers so you could get

full-depth drawers by bringing
this out just a little bit,

but the stone makes
that look good.

Whose idea was this,
by the way?

Oh, that was my idea.

modeled after?

100%.

I think this is exactly how
we wanted the house,

but we didn't even know it.

As a couple,
you grow as individuals.

You become more confident
in what you want.

I have to be totally honest,
because you scared me early on,

saying, "Oh, we don't
agree on anything.

We're gonna fight.
We're gonna --"

I thought you guys actually
were pretty incredible at

accommodating each other's
feelings about what they would

like to see.

We didn't do this.
We just helped curate

what you said you wanted,
so this is your design.

I gotta be honest,
it really helped the advice

that you gave us early on.

Yeah, I'm just glad that
we don't, we have like

a forever home now, right?
