He told me that his work
at the clinic felt like he was

saving lives again,
like when he was a firefighter.

I hate that he's gone, but
I know that the way he died--

saving the life
of someone that he loved--

he would feel it was worth it.

After hearing
what Izaiah said earlier,

I've decided to create a fund

for college students
in Derek's name.

It will provide stipends so
that students who want to work

at the clinic will be paid,
removing any financial barrier.

I remember Dr. McBride
would always worry about that.

So many talented students
couldn't get hands-on experience

due to lack of funds.

It's a great way
to honor two men

who were taken from us
much too soon.

We were hoping to be able
to present this to his dad.

It flew over the fire station

that used to be
Derek's second home.

This is gonna mean so much
to Derek's family.

I'm gonna bring up something

that nobody has mentioned
about Derek

and some of you may be a little
bit embarrassed to mention it,

but I say tell the truth

This man
was a world-class flirt.

his mom used to say that he was

flirting with the maternity
nurses when he was two days old.

Well, I guess he had
a thing for nurses.

realized our flirtation

And he became
a really good friend.

And one of the most hardworking

physical therapy patients
I ever had.

He lost the use of his legs
and the job he loved,

but he fought
his way back to recovery.

So, I think
the best way we can honor

this wonderful, wonderful man

is to be more like him.

Resilient.

He was convinced,

that anyone
outside of this group

trying to lure him
from his one true path.

How? I mean, how is it even
possible to create a sense

of trust with somebody
who's been raised like that?

It was challenging.

But so worth the effort.

And to see the joy
and pride in the journey

of self-discovery has just

been one of the most rewarding
experiences of my career.
