PREVIOUSLY ON
"DAVID, KING OF ISRAEL..."

You’re going to lead
this bunch into battle?

If the Lord commands.

My king, I saw David
at the Holy Village of Nob.

Then he gave him food
and the sword of Goliath.

- You betray your king!
- We shall not kneel.

I will not harm
God’s anointed king of Israel.

God will be his judge. Not I.

And get off my land!

That thick-headed man
is going to get us all killed.

By morning,
there will not be one male alive

that belongs to
this fat and repulsive man!

These are precarious times

for the kingdom of Israel.

The legendary outlaw David

and his growing renegade army

remained banished by King Saul,

leaving
Israel and its broken king

vulnerable to their enemies.

The Philistines
seize the opportunity

and assemble a massive army
for open war to crush Israel

with overwhelming force.

It’s at this point

that Saul’s
mental and spiritual decline

takes another drastic turn
toward the demonic.

My king...

What is your command?

Find me a woman who is a medium.

So I may go and inquire of her.

There is a witch in Endor.

My king, the Torah bans mediums.

Take me to her.

DESPERATE AND IN SEARCH
OF ANSWERS, KING SAUL,

TO PRINCE JONATHAN’S DISMAY,

MAKES A HEARTBREAKING DECISION,

CHOOSING TO TURN TO A DARK
SOURCE FOR SPIRITUAL COUNSEL.

By divine law,

mediums and soothsayers
are banned in Israel.

Even King Saul
himself has expelled

these witches from the land.

But some continue to practice
their dark craft in the shadows.

So, in an act of desperation,
Saul disguises himself

and travels to see
the witch of Endor.

Saul knows that it is
wrong to seek the guidance

of this necromancer,
of this soothsayer.

But he can’t help himself.

Because he’s so terrified

by the fact that divine guidance
has been withheld from him.

So Saul, when he’s
being rejected by God,

rather than looking inward
and saying, wow, I messed up...

he turns against God.

- What do you want?
- A friend seeks your consult.

He’ll pay you generously.

I have to talk
to a man who is dead.

Will you call
up his spirit for me?

Are you trying to get me killed?

You know
that King Sol has outlawed

consulting with
the spirits of the dead.

Why are you
setting a trap for me?

I swear to the Lord,

nothing bad will happen
to you for doing this.

Who do you want me to bring up?

Bring up the prophet...

Samuel.

I summon from
the place of the dead

the spirit
of the prophet Samuel.

Why have you deceived me?

You are King Saul!

Do not be afraid.

You will not be harmed.

Tell me, witch. What do you see?

I see a spirit rising up,
out of the ground!

The prophet of the Lord...

Samuel.

Why have you disturbed
me by calling me back?

Because I am in deep trouble.

The Philistines
are at war with me.

God has left me and doesn’t
reply by prophets or dreams.

So, I have called for you
to tell me what to do.

Why ask me,

since the Lord has left you
and has become your enemy?

The Lord has done
just as he said he would.

He has torn
the kingdom from you,

and given it
to your rival, David.

The Lord has
done this to you today

because of your
rebellion against him.

Please, my prophet,

there must be
something I can do?

What’s more, the Lord will
hand you and the army of Israel

over to
the Philistines tomorrow,

and you and your sons
will be here with me

in the place of the dead.

The Lord will bring down the
entire army of Israel in defeat.

Please...

Please, have mercy!

Please, my king.
Let me feed you.

My king, you need your strength.

When we see passages like
that of the Witch of Endor,

a lot of people want to
know if it really happened.

But we do know this.

There was a strong belief

during this time... in demons.

We see that
through the New Testament.

If you believe in
the story of the New Testament,

we know there were demons.

We know there
was a spirit world.

I believe the story is a true
story and actually happened.

The reaction
of the witch herself...

because she’s kinda shocked.

You know?
She’s kind of, like, what?

Like, she’s as freaked out
as Saul is, you know?

And that’s interesting
because you would think

that she does this all the time.

And it almost reveals the fact

that this wasn’t
a normal witchcraft scene,

that she didn’t expect Samuel.

She shrieks when she sees it

because this is
beyond her power.

She’s used to
the voices and ventriloquism.

Now this is called up a real
spirit, and it frightens her.

And Samuel says

something very interesting.

He says,
why have you disturbed me?

And the word disturbed there

can be used for grave robbing.

Why have you robbed my grave
by calling me up from the dead?

The message that’s given
to Saul is that the Israelites

will be defeated and he and
his sons will die the next day.

And so,
the moral of the story is,

when you consult the dead

you get a message of death.

As Saul reels from
this prophecy of death

at the hands of the Philistines,

David and his men have sought
refuge with the very same enemy.

To receive that refuge,
David must petition King Achish,

the same king before whom
David had once faked insanity.

Miraculously, the Israelites
are granted permission to stay,

but on one condition,

that David and his men
will raid and plunder

the king’s enemies, and
that includes the Israelites.

David does raid
and plunder and brings

much treasure to King Achish.

But the source of
that treasure is another matter.

David would go to
outlying villages and people

who were not Israelite,
and kill everybody.

So there’s nobody to tell a tale

of what he’s doing,
and would come back with booty.

The king thought
that he was getting this

from conquering the Israelites,
but in fact wasn’t.

It shows again,
David is cunning.

He’s a strategist.

KING ACHISH AGREES TO GIVE DAVD
A REMOTE ABANDONED VILLAGE

CALLED ZIKLAG.

A PLACE OF REFUGE

WHERE DAVID AND HIS MEN
CAN RAISE THEIR FAMILIES

AND WHERE DAVID AND ABIGAIL
CAN START THEIR OWN.

You must try to relax, Abigail.

Relax?

I have a human
inside of me, Miriam,

and I’m trying to get it out.

How exactly am I to relax?

Come on, Abigail.
Miriam is just trying to help.

THE PHILISTINE KING

DAVID AND HIS MEN ARE BEING
SUMMONED TO THE FRONT LINES

TO FIGHT
ALONGSIDE THE PHILISTINES

AGAINST THEIR OWN PEOPLE.

Excellent.

Tell King Achish his
loyal champion is on his way.

IN ORDER TO KEEP
THE DECEPTION INTACT,

DAVID MUST ACT
AS IF HE IS THRILLED

TO FIGHT THE ISRAELITES.

David! Your wife wants
to introduce you to someone.

David, what are you going to do?

You cannot fight our own people.

Fight Jonathan?

The Lord will make a way.

You focus on our child
and getting rest.

I will pray
for wisdom and covering.

And I will do the same for you.

Brother Jaaziel!

Take care of our precious brood.

So, because David
has seemed to the king of Achih

to be a loyal subject,

he’s invited to join forces

with him and the other
Philistine leaders

to go to war against Israel.

David finds himself
as having to say yes to this

because otherwise
his duplicity would be exposed.

Now would be a good time
to tell us what your plan is.

The Lord has not yet spoken.

By the looks of things,
we’ll soon be able to ask Him

face to face
in the great year after.

Well, brother,
we are candidates for a miracle.

Indeed, brother.

not all are as welcoming

at Israelites
in the Philistine ranks.

When they see
your exploits on the battlefield

against our common enemy,

THE PHILISTINE
GENERALS AND COMMANDERS

THEY DEMAND THAT THE KING
SEND DAVID BACK TO ZIKLAG.

THEY REFUSE TO FIGHT
ALONGSIDE DAVID AND HIS ARMY.

THEY’RE SURE
IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE,

DAVID WILL TURN AGAINST THEM
TO WIN FAVOR WITH KING SAUL.

What have
I done to deserve this?

Please! Let me fight your enemy.

DAVID HAS RECEIVED
THE MIRACLE HE WAS WAITING FOR.

HE AND HIS MEN ARE
SENT AWAY FROM THE BATTLEFIELD.

ORDERED TO
RETURN TO THEIR HOME AT ZIKLAG.

The Lord answers
in mysterious ways.

Well, brother,
it seems we’ll be back

with those
noisy creatures very soon.

Best we get
some sleep on the road.

The King of Achish is apologetc

and David
appears to be gracious.

But David’s going like,

phew, I almost had to
go against my own people,

something I didn’t have to do.

So, it was God’s
gracious intervention.

There must have been
a tremendous sense of relief.

Keth,

announce our arrival.

Jaaziel? Jaaziel!

It’s okay, Jaaziel.

- I’m sorry.
- It’s okay, Jaaziel.

Tell me what happened here.

Amalekites... Amalekites.

Amalekites!

It’s okay. It’s okay.

CRIES RING OUT IN THE REMAINS
OF THE VILLAGE OF ZIKLAG

AS MAN AFTER MAN DISCOVERS
HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN ARE GONE.

THE AMALEKITES
HAVE TAKEN THEM ALL.

THIS IS THE VERY SAME
BLOODTHIRSTY TRIBE THAT,

MANY YEARS BEFORE,

KING SAUL HAD BEEN ORDERED
BY GOD TO DESTROY COMPLETELY,

AND SAUL DID NOT.

The men were beside themselves.

They sacrificed all
in order to follow David.

They go home,
but when they get to Ziklag,

their home is gone,
the house is destroyed,

their possessions stolen,
their wives and children taken.

This is the worst
imaginable situation.

The visceral hurt of
their families being taken.

It shows that he’s the leader,

and they look to him for

praise and blame.

And so, in their hurt
and heartache,

the blame fell on him.

These are fickle men.

These are the disenfranchised
that are hurt by this.

Oh Lord...

My God who saves me...

day and night.

I cry out before you.

May my prayer come before you.

For my soul is troubled...

and my life draws near the end.

I am counted among those

who go down to the pit.

David!

David!

When David faced rejection,
he went inward and upward.

And when Saul faced rejection,
he went outward.

He lashed out,
and David cried out.

I seek divine counsel.

Of course, brother.

O Lord, my God...

Reveal Yourself to me.

I seek Your strength.

I seek Your wisdom.

Shall I pursue
the raiding party?

Will I overtake them?

GOD HEARS DAVID’S PRAYER,
AND ANSWERS HIM WITH ONE WORD...

"PURSUE."

DAVID GIVES AN OATH TO HIS MEN

THAT IF THEY WILL FOLLOW
HIM ONE MORE TIME,

HE WILL GIVE HIS LIFE
TRYING TO REDEEM

WHAT WAS TAKEN FROM THEM ALL.

I would’ve not wanted to be
on the receiving end of that.

Now they are fighting

not just for the guy
on their left and the right.

They’re fighting for the things
they hold most precious.

Their sons,
their daughters, their wives.

The reason they exist.

That’s what
they’re fighting for.

AMALEK MEANS
"HE WHO LICKS BLOOD. "

THE AMALEKITES
ARE A NOMADIC RAIDING TRIBE

WHO, LEGEND CLAIMS,

COULD TRANSFORM THEMSELVES
INTO ANIMALS TO AVOID CAPTURE.

THEY OFTEN WEAR MASKS MADE FROM
THE SKULLS OF WILD BEASTS,

WITH THEIR BODIES
COVERED IN ANIMAL BLOOD.

THIS SAME EVIL TRIBE IS
THE ONE THAT HAD ATTACKED WOME,

CHILDREN, AND STRAGGLERS

WHEN MOSES WAS LEADING
THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT.

The Amalekites were a people

whose entire essence
was cruelty.

They are, throughout the Bible,

the arch-enemy
of the Jewish people,

the arch-enemy
of the nation of Israel.

On me!!

DAVID FACES OFF WITH THE ONE WO
DARED KIDNAP HIS WIFE AND CHIL,

KING LAGAN OF THE AMALEKITES.

TO THE CONFUSION
OF THE ENEMY KING,

DAVID DRENCHES HIMSELF IN WATE.

The battle belongs to the Lord!

GOD FULFILLS
HIS PROMISE TO DAVID

AND GIVES HIM COMPLETE VICTORY
OVER THEIR ANCIENT ENEMY.

DAVID AND HIS MEN RECOVER

EVERYTHING THE AMALEKITES
HAD TAKEN FROM THEM,

INCLUDING ALL OF THEIR WIVES
AND ALL OF THEIR CHILDREN.

Their treasure is recovered
and more from their enemies.

So much more treasure
that David shares

the bounty with the towns
that have been loyal to him.

DESPITE SAMUEL’S WARNING,

SAUL GOES OFF TO BATTLE
AGAINST THE PHILISTINES.

WHILE DAVID
CELEBRATES HIS VICTORY,

KING SAUL IS FACING HIS DEFEAT.

THE FIRST KING OF ISRAEL

HAS BEEN ABANDONED
BY MOST OF HIS MEN.

ONLY A FEW REMAIN TO THE END.

AND THOSE WHO STAYED FALL.

No... No!

INCLUDING SAUL’S HEIR,

PRINCE JONATHAN.

No!

My son.

Jonathan?

My boy. My son!

Why have you forsaken me?

My king.

I have been looking for you.

My king.

The enemy is searching for you.
We must hide!

Draw your sword.

Draw your sword!

Run me through!
Before they discover us.

They will have
their way with me.

SAUL HAD BEEN ANOINTED KING
IN HOPES THAT HE WOULD REIGN

WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS,

BUT HE LOST HIS WAY WHEN HE
TRAGICALLY PLACED HIS JUDGEMENT

ABOVE THE LORD’S.

AND SO PASSED
THE FIRST KING OF ISRAEL

AND HIS LOYAL SON AND HEIR,

PRINCE JONATHAN.

The complexity
and tragedy of Saul

lies in the split at
the center of his soul.

And it’s only
at the end of his life,

when he valiantly
fights and dies for Israel,

that Saul’s soul becomes one.

DAVID AND HIS FOLLOWERS
RETURN TO ZIKLAG,

AND BEGIN
REBUILDING THEIR HOMES.

- Rest a moment, Abigail.
- I’m fine.

My determined wife.

I can see you’re not going
to stop until this is done.

Why don’t you go and get us some
water and I’ll finish up here.

Can’t you see
I’m enjoying myself?

If you need a break,
please, go refresh yourself.

David!

He is alone.

Where do you come from?

The battlefield of Mount Gilboa.

I barely escaped
the Philistines with my life.

Who won the battle?

Our armies turned and ran.

But...
most were wounded and died.

Even King Saul
and his son Jonathan are...

are dead.

How do you know Saul
and Jonathan are dead?

I was at Mount Gilboa.

It’s where I came across

King Saul and his son,
Prince Jonathan.

They had fallen, but...

King Saul still drew breath.

He asked me
that I aid him in his death.

And I did.

to kill the Lord’s anointed one?

Your own mouth testifies

the anointed king of Israel.

IN HOPES OF REWARD,

THE SCAVENGER LIES TO DAVID

THAT HE HAD AIDED
IN KING SAUL’S DEATH.

THE SCAVENGER’S PRESUMPTION
IS MET WITH A DEATH SENTENCE.

ANYONE WHO LAYS A HAND ON THE
LORD’S ANOINTED IS THE ENEMY.

He’s either exaggerating
or lying, trying to get credit,

thinking that David would
respond like every other king.

When your enemy dies,
you rejoice.

But David had never
seen Saul as an enemy,

even though
Saul saw David as an enemy.

He doesn’t
understand the heart of David.

What is clear from
David’s eulogy of Saul,

his eulogy for the man
that sought to take his life,

Is that David sees Saul’s

leading Israel in this battle

as an important moment of valor.

DAVID MOURNS
THE DEATH OF HIS DEAREST

AND MOST LOYAL OF FRIENDS,

PRINCE JONATHAN.

DAVID WRITES
THE "LAMENT OF THE BOW"

AND ORDERS ALL THE MEN
FROM HIS TRIBE OF JUDAH

THE BOW OF JONATHAN
DID NOT TURN BACK,

AND THE SWORD OF SAUL
DID NOT RETURN EMPTY.

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN
IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE.

JONATHAN IS SLAIN
ON YOUR HIGH PLACES.

MY BROTHER, JONATHAN...

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN,
AND THE WEAPONS OF WAR PERISHE.

I GRIEVE FOR YOU,
JONATHAN, MY BROTHER.

YOUR LOVE FOR ME WAS WONDERFUL,

MORE WONDERFUL
THAN THAT OF A WOMAN.

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN.

THE WEAPONS
OF WAR HAVE PERISHED.

Jonathan is,
I think, rightly understood,

one of the most heroic figures

in the history of Israel,

and in the history
of the Jewish people.

But a prince who
could have sought to be king,

but instead
recognized God’s anointed...

his like would
not be seen again.

And the sackcloth
and the tearing in the ashes

is a sign
of what has been forever lost.

In David’s
commitment to Jonathan

is even after death,

there’s a binding covenant
of love between the two,

and respect, and commitment.

We see in David a real
sadness for losing Jonathan.

There is a sadness, but there
is a belief that that sadness

is resting on a foundation,
on which I can sleep,

and I can rest,
and I can find strength again.

AFTER MOURNING
FOR SAUL AND JONATHAN,

DAVID ASKS THE LORD
WHERE HE SHOULD GO.

GOD DIRECTS HIM TO HEBRON,

IN THE LAND OF DAVID’S TRIBE,

THE TRIBE OF JUDAH.

Years before, the prophet
Samuel anointed a young David to

to one day be king of Israel,
the divine will of the Lord.

And now,
finally, today is the day

for David to be anointed by man.

THE MEN OF JUDAH COME

AND THERE THEY ANOINT DAVID
AS KING OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH.

DAVID THE SHEPHERD,

THE GIANT-KILLER,

THE OUTLAW,

THE KING.

The battle belongs to the Lord!

DAVID, THE PSALMIST,

THE MUSICIAN, THE LOVER,

THE WARRIOR, AND THE FRIEND.

THE LEADER COMMITTED
TO SERVE HIS PEOPLE

AND FOLLOW THE LORD
UNCONDITIONALLY.

David,

the one who taught the world how
to live and lead with humility,

how to put
total faith in God’s will,

the one whom God himself
calls a man after my own heart,

and whose bloodline is chosen
to one day usher in the Messiah.

David, as head of the tribe
of Judah, will be the lion,

the symbol of
his future monarchy,

its strength
and true leadership.

But the story of David
is just getting started.

The prophecy that David
was to be king over all Hebrews

has yet to be fulfilled.

Eleven other tribes do not yet
recognize him as king.

Within this
torn and divided land,

David takes another step
toward his divine inheritance

to be the king of Israel.
