listening to as a kid? I guess basically

music I started out was the music my

mother listen to. You know, the R&B

music, the music that make you shake and

get ready for a party.

Well, I remember listening to uh I

remember listening to records on my

little radio late at night under my

pillow, you know, and I don't really

know how old I was. I think I had a pet

turtle at the same time.

Mr. The Tambourine Man by the Birds. I

think I think that was the first thing

that really got me excited cuz it

sounded it didn't sound like anything

else.

Come together. The Beatles.

Honky Dog Woman. The Rolling Stones.

Whispering Bells by the Dell Vikings.

Oh Jesus. Uh

I'm a man.

on a rolling stone.

Energy is what you need

in rock and roll. Energy in three

chords.

People try to put us to death. Talking

about my generation.

When I was a kid, my dad used to yell

down the steps, "Area, get off that

piano."

Just because we get around.

Talking about my generation.

Rock and roll is a great bastard. It's a

great uh mongrel. It steals from things.

We were the generation that was going to

change things to make way for this

Aquarian age, which by the way, I think

happened December 19th of last year.

Prince, he's not of my generation,

but he will be if he keeps living this

way.

The basic essence that rock and roll

needs to have is to make you feel good.

20 years ago,

rock and roll went technicol, took over

the whole world. The country was

exploding with new cool ideas and

attitudes about civil rights, free

speech, free love, drugs,

especially about the war in Vietnam.

Rock and roll united these ideas into a

new world view. And suddenly our music

was everywhere.

All you need is love. Love

is all you need.

I was asked in a recent program, they

said, "Well,

do you still think that all you need is

love?" And I said, "Yes, absolutely."

Rock and roll was no longer simply

teenage dance music. It also voiced the

concerns of a generation that was

prepared to question everything.

Why is it they can put down on our

music? I mean, they say it's bad. I

mean, they say it's a bunch of noise.

Turn down the noise, but is it really

noise? Do they ever listen to the words

of lines being wrong?

Nobody's right. If everybody's wrong,

young people speaking their mind,

getting so much resistance

from behind. We got stopped children.

Watch that sound. Everybody look what's

going down.

Just because we're not going along with

society like everybody else goes, they

want everybody to do the same thing and

live their own life. They want all they

want to do, they want you to grow up,

get an education, raise children, and

die.

We thought what we were doing was the

natural thing for those group of people

to do that whoever it was. And it was

more or less a bunch of uh middle class

uh college dropout kids trying to figure

out something to do beside follow

Eisenhower into the grave.

your eyes. I say your eyes may look like

afraid you don't know where it is.

The hate Ashbury community has created

the council for a summer of love in San

Francisco. I don't know where they got

that summer of love stuff for us. It was

what it meant was that oh now that now

the Grey Line tour bus stops in front of

our house, you know, and they stop and

look and we'd wave, you know. Hey

Nobody wants to get hurt. Nobody wants

to hurt anybody. We would all like to be

able to live an uncluttered life, a

simple life, a good life, you know, and

like think about moving the whole human

race ahead a step or a few steps.

A few steps. Uhhuh. Well, right now I'd

settle for a step.

Monterey was actually where the first

chance I had to see all of these

entertainers that I had only heard or

read about. The experimentation in the

music, the fact that it was open, we

were all open to doing anything.

That was the main thing. You can look

any way you want to. You can sound any

way you want to. Uh, whatever it is you

want to be, go for it.

We love you all, man. Cuz this is very

groovy, man. Monterey is very groovy,

man. This This is This is something,

man. This is This is our generation,

man. All you people, we're all together,

man. It's groovy. And dig yourselves cuz

it's really groovy.

into fire night.

The thing about the Grateful Dead and

Monterey Pop Festival was we had the

misfortune to be programmed right

between The Who and Jimmyi Hendris, you

know. So, here's The Who. First time in

America, they destroy all their stuff.

Bam. Beautifully, you know. And here's

Clouds of Smoke. We come out and play

our tunes, you Ding, ding, ding. You

know, and then Jimmyi Hendris comes on

after us, destroys all his stuff, and

you know, it's like we were in the most

forgettable spot on the program just

playing music. You know,

both Jimmyi Hendris and Pete Townsen

were the flaming men. Usually the

audience who has not seen that sort of

thing uh are in awe of entertainers. I

know I am as an audience,

but all of us stood around with our jaws

hanging open. And these are the other

entertainers watching uh Jimmyi

Hendricks and The Who doing this stuff

were just literally drooling idiots, you

know, with little drool hanging down

going, I don't believe it.

The Beatles had made me want to become a

um a pop star. This guy made me want to

become a musician.

We would get letters from white kids who

would say, "Hey man, we got your

records. We love them, but we can't let

our parents know that we had them

because they wouldn't let us play them

in the house or they would make us throw

them away or they wouldn't allow it, you

know. So, right from the very outset, we

were closing this gap. I love black

music more than anything else. Period.

There's nothing I've ever heard in my

life to compare to listening to Otis

Reading.

It is now star time. I'm talking about

the man that sings pain in my heart. The

man that sings shake. The man that sings

satisfaction. The man that sings far.

I'm talking about the star of the show.

It's Mr. Otis.

I think it was in ' 67 uh an

introduction and I think that yes, it

made invasions into the pop market. So

did it. Well, it wasn't like uh here we

come. But then again, it was

like good music.

Soul combined rhythm and blues with

black gospel music and became identified

with the new sense of black pride

sweeping the nation.

What's Going On. The What's Going On

album to me, and I say this right now,

is the greatest album that's ever been

recorded. It's a very spiritual type of

album with a very spiritual message.

It's one of those albums that if it came

out right today, it'd be a smash. So, it

never dies.

Slide to me was the epitome of soul

music. I mean, he was like raw energy

but with an intellectual arrangement and

he was funny and he brought all of us

together. Whether you like rock and roll

or whe you thought it was good or bad,

you could it made you all talk. Made all

people talk, black and white. made you

question yourselves, your time.

All of the songs were about love. It

occurred to us for some reason a whole

bunch of people on different continents

that it would be interesting to write

about something else beside that. Let's

how about let's look at another area. Uh

and consequently, I think the lyrics got

a lot broader, a lot more interesting.

Um people it was okay to use larger

words. Uh if people didn't understand

them maybe they'd look them up.

violent period too so you've got peace

violence army drugs all just coming

I think what we have to accept is what

The next stop is Vietnam.

I wasn't totally convinced at the end of

the 60s that uh some sort of physical

action wasn't going to come down. So, I

uh thought I'd be a lot more comfortable

in the mountains. You know, at least I

could see them coming.

I came upon a child of God. He was

walking along the road and I asked him,

"Where are you going?"

And this he told me,

"I'm going on down to farm. Going to

join in a rocking roll.

I'm going to camp out on the land. I'm

going to try and get my soul

free.

I think Woodstock was the peak, the as

close as we had to perfection of the

hippie ideal. It was an enormous

population of people with an enormous

capacity for cooperation.

We heard that freeways were jammed. It

was like a celebration. We jammed a

freeway. We thought we jammed the

freeway. Not Crosby, Stills, and Nash or

not the who, but everybody.

Our our kind of people.

There were enough of us to jam a

freeway. That was a big deal. That's

what that was. Woodstock let us know how

many of us there were.

all over the country. They're coming

together.

You realize that you're not the only

people in your city who are doing the

things you are. They're everywhere.

People that were there felt very, very

strong about being there and they felt

like this is a special moment. We're

never Everybody got it then. It wasn't

like later on that they had to realize

that this was tremendous. This was a

city in itself. We own this city. We are

the people. We played really awful at

Woodstock. I mean, if we were bad at

Monterey Palm Festival, we were

colossally horrible at at Woodstock.

Everybody else loved it. Everybody had a

great time. We played terrible. We were

only too glad to get out of there. We

had a great time hanging out, but

playing was a disaster.

As the 60s came to a close, the Rolling

Stones wound up the last major tour of

the decade. I read in one of the papers

that you'll be giving a free concert in

San Francisco. We are doing a free

concert in San Francisco on December 6th

and uh uh the location is not Golden

Gate Park unfortunately, but it's

somewhere adjacent to it, which is a bit

larger.

[Music]

Let me repeat, the Rolling Stones free

concert is going to be on tomorrow at

the Alamont Speedway.

Alamont's another one where we were

supposed to play, but we never did. When

you advertise the Rolling Stones, no

matter where they are, the Rolling

Stones means a crowd.

We were the ones who knew the Hell's

Angels those about as well as anybody

did. And they were the Hell's Angels who

were our friends and the Hell's Angels

who weren't friendly at all. I ended up

acting as a sign of a security man. We

were in that space of having Hell's

Angels on both sides of us. It was so

completely out of control and completely

out of hand. And it had turned into a

major media event. I mean, it was one of

those kind of no-win situations.

Please help me to introduce myself. I'm

When you're on stage, you are

responsible in some way, whether you

like it or not, for the mood you create.

But unfortunately, you can't be

responsible for all the people sitting

at the back. How can you be?

As the 60s faded into the 70s, rock and

roll seemed to lose something. Maybe it

was a sense of unity or or adventure,

the money,

or maybe the music lost its innocence as

a drugs kicked in. First, there was

Altimont.

Then, within a space of 10 months, the

tragic loss of three of rock and roll's

most distinctive voices, Morrison, Hrix,

and Janice.

I think they were spinning the roulette

wheel with drugs. And sometimes you win,

sometimes you lose it big time. We were

too young, too wealthy, and too happy to

be suicidal.

You hesitate is through.

and I love to come a funeral.

It's the essence of it is is that

attitude that I don't care. I'm living

you know I'm doing it. It's life itself.

the person in his instrument and or her

instrument or whatever. Just that

magical moment when everything is

perfect and nothing matters and you've

elevated yourself far above anything

that you could ever think about or care

about. You're in another world and

sometimes you just can't get back from

there and that's what happened to a lot

of people. I I loved Hendricks and I and

and the way he plays the guitar, nobody

else can play guitar. Nobody else ever

will play electric guitar like that. He

plays like it's a woman, you know. You

can see all the curves and you and his

electricity flying off everywhere. It's

totally out of control. He's playing it

like uh he's living there.

Something that uh gets me going and

turns me on is the energy in rock and

roll guitar. It's strumming, pounding,

pushing

I think everyone

When the guys started putting on makeup,

uh it wasn't that much of a shift from

the long hair and beads and purses and

uh stuff that guys had been wearing in

the '60s.

It was all effeminite

and that was one of the great

criticisms. But I mean, so well, show

business is effeminite in a way because

show business crosses lines of gender. I

would look back at the creatures in

denim and long hair and sort of just

standing and they look more androgynous

uh than anything else I'd seen. It

looked like they'd run a mile if they

saw someone at the opposite sex. I think

what a lot of the glam rock bands did in

fact was do exactly the reverse. They

brought sex back into rock and roll in a

big way.

What a young dude.

Hey,

where are you?

The glitter glam movement, which emerged

from England in the early '7s,

challenged the boundaries of taste,

fashion, and personal expression.

I like people who are AC/DC,

you know what I mean?

You may call it nothing but a breakdown

in gender. that same androgynous

phenomenon of the pop scene that

produces boys with long hair and ruffled

shirts. And you may be right, but back

to the music.

Television man is crazy. Juvenile Rex.

Oh man, I need TV when I got T-Rex.

This guy in T-Rex, uh, you know, I

thought he was very special. Mark Bowen,

I thought he was, uh, the best of the

bunch. You're dirty and sweet.

Bowie. He represents it all to me.

Uh, excitement, space. See, I'm just the

space cadet. He's the commander.

You can't put your finger on David. I

mean, he's just uh abstract to me. Maybe

that's why he's a singer, actor,

stage actor, or whatever. He's got all

of those elements just working there

that he really is like the man that fell

to earth.

I like to mix it up and see what happens

when you put different things with uh

rock and roll. And rock and roll is such

a great palette to work from. You know,

you can add almost anything to it and

something interesting will come out of

it. I mean, it's for me it's like an

endless source of inspiration.

That's the description. It's you can

take from everything because something

everything comes from something and then

you make it your own.

The generations just keep coming and the

styles keep changing with the

generations.

So you're a little bit older and a lot

less bolder than

there's no school for rock singers as

far as I know yet. Surprising and there

isn't one but you know this is how you

wear trousers and this is when you go

down on your knees.

So you used to shake them down but now

you stop and think about your dignity.

Sometimes I'd wear I get he's got cheap

suits.

Get the feeling weary when the wedding

day is done. Well, all you got to do is

get up and give me your kids.

Poverty. I came about the way I do my

calls from poverty at first.

We were doing our funkadelic thing, but

we still was playing like mostly black

clubs. So it was like the temptations on

acid. Sweet 161.

Feel a little tight feeling under the

gun with all the trucks are out there

playing his lips.

Get into your kids

my passion statement is uh you know

said you can come back baby rock and

roll forget

It takes a very strong imaginative

effort to actually put yourself into a

trashy scene and enjoy it.

Um, no, not at all.

I don't know how he's rated. I always

rated him highly. It's for the quantity

of good work that he did. I mean, it was

he did, you know, six albums while I was

brushing my teeth and he's working hard.

I remember when I was young

so much fun.

I don't play on my own. The biggest kick

I ever got

a thing called a crack down

rock.

I think it's nice people can put on a

concert that's got all these lights and

effects and special things like that.

It's really, you know, it's what's

inside that counts. That's what I think.

You know, all that is like a diversion

from the real issue, which is what's the

song about. So, you're scared and you're

thinking that maybe we ain't that young

anymore. Come

Now, I got this guitar and I learned how

to make her talk.

My car's out back. If you're ready to

walk from your front porch to my front

70s started out weird.

It just seemed to get weirder and

weirder. A lot of people dropped out. I

know. I dropped out. And then when no

one was looking, rock and roll became

show business.

I'm making records. My fans, they can't

wait.

They write me letters. Tell me I'm

tough to handle this fortune and fame.

Everybody's so

I mean, we've been willing to sell out

on some levels for a long time, but

nobody's been buying, you know.

I have a limo right in the back.

I like the doors in case I'm attacked.

Lucky I'm insane after all I've been

through. Life's been good to me so long.

Yeah, we're thinking all the Manchester

United team are going to become tax

exiles. You see, I just thought it might

be implications here. Yeah. Can you find

out what's happened to me car

Lamborghini? Well, maybe it just goes

right back to when the when the freeway

was crammed on the way to Woodstock. It

was in the newspaper and uh the guys

read the newspaper, you know, same guys

that read the Wall Street Journal and

they they read and they said, "Wow, look

at that market,

you know, and the rest is history." By

the mid70s, rocks raining super groups

were doing bigger business than ever.

On a darkert high

wind,

once found dirt

rising up through the air

up ahead in the distance,

I saw a shimmering light.

every

time for the night.

So I called up the captain,

please bring me my wine.

We haven't had that spirit here since

1969.

And still those voices are calling from

far away.

Wake you up in the middle of the night

just to hear them say,

"Welcome to the Hotel California."

Such a lovely place. Such a lovely

What a nice surprise. What a nice

I'm telling you that rock and roll

basically is no different than IBM,

Xerox, Sarah Lee, Chevrolet.

Supply and demand. It's the same same

business.

Loving you isn't the right thing to do.

Shacking up. Shacking up. So you won't

do

The 70s were such an apathetic period.

Anyway, well, we can't change the world.

We can't change oursel. Let's make

money.

Get away.

Get a good job.

We're looking forward to that being a a

hit. We got to spread that record.

65,000 nationally on it. It's only been

out 3 to 4 weeks. The record come up

here and lie to you.

By now, rock and roll was the biggest

grossing branch of the entertainment

industry, well on its way to becoming a

$4 billion a year business.

In the midst of all this excess, Dylan

went his own way as usual. His Rolling

Thunder review, a sort of anti- tour,

concentrated on small venues and put the

emphasis back on the music.

Early one morning, the sun was shining,

she was lying in bed, wondering if she

changed it all, if her hair was still

red. If folks tasted their lives

together, sure wasn't going to be rough.

They never did like mama's homemade

dress. Bubba's bang bug wasn't big

enough and he was standing on the side

of the road ring falling on his shoes

heading out for these curves. No, he

paid some dues getting through

tangled up in blue.

She was married when they first met,

soon to be divorced. He helped her out

of a jam. I guess about use a little too

much force. And he drove that car as far

as they could. Abandoned it out west.

Splitting up on a dark set night for the

grand best. And she turned around to

look at him as he was walking away

saying over her shoulder, "We'll meet

again someday on the avenue."

Tangled up in blue.

the guys in the band and Bob Dylan and

we were all like street punks or

something who got lucky playing in rock

and roll.

I think Bob Dylan turns an impeccable

phrase always. I very much love the

stuff he's doing now and I think he he

hasn't even gotten to the best stuff

he's going to do.

I get over this

for us. I think we had come to the end

of the road. We had played up and down

that highway many, many times and we

weren't learning a lot from it anymore.

So I came up with this idea of The Last

Walls, thinking that maybe this we could

do something very musical and very

classy and it would be a very tasty way

for the band to to say goodbye.

And then came disco.

and you know do dances got a little

Latin hustle you know but this is great

was a great relief to be able to do

something again which had another sort

So, I think for a disco, it was time for

the instruments and not so much the

singer.

There always was a kind of dance music

that was basically sort of repetitious

and simple and was basically built right

on four four time, you know, on a big

bass drum on the on the ones and uh uh

threes where you could where even white

people could tell where it was.

But not everyone loved disco.

This is held officially the world's

largest anti- disco rally.

We took all the disco records that you

brought tonight.

and we're going to pull them out real

That's why the punks were cool. when

everything else was going to hell, they

came along and they said, "You know,

you're up yours with your slick record."

I thought punk brought something to the

party. And I think it was healthy that

someone just came in and disturbed

everything and shuffled up the deck.

Some of the better of the the punk bands

have developed into

sort of like folk music. I don't mean

folk music as the traditional folk music

but the allergy can be allegory can be

drawn in the 60s when protesters used

acoustic guitars. Now instead of

acoustic guitars you know they have

higheed 300 beats a minute speed rock

and uh yelling about the same things

about how that air is poisoned out

there.

and puke and a man with no legs running

down the street trying to die. And

Talking Heads. First went over there to

Britain. The audiences were showing

their appreciation to to the groups by

doing what they called gobbing, which

was spitting at the at the performers.

And they could really spit pretty far.

So you'd see somebody, you know, 20 feet

back, even further, and you'd think,

"Nah, no way. Nothing's going to come at

me. I'm safe." And then you'd see this

this rain of stuff coming coming out.

And it's pretty hard to explain to

somebody that this is the audience's way

of showing their appreciation.

And that's what rock and roll ought to

be. every every 5 years or so, uh, their

their ideas and image, the kids ought to

come up and just hit you right in the

face. I don't mean breaking noses, but I

mean with what it is they have to say

and dressing different so that adults

are going, "Oh, God." Yeah, that's it.

You know, make them throw up. Yeah. Now,

when I walk those streets, kings and

queens step aside. Every woman I meet,

they all stay satisfied.

knowledge, you can check this, was

banned in several states in America

And so when he used to convalt and

perform, what else would you suggest?

Elvis Presley for me, like for a lot of

people, was the one who stood the

highest on the mountain with the

brightest torch. And it changed my life.

And it it made me think that this is

what I'm going to do. And I didn't know

anything else. I couldn't see anything

else. I didn't even understand school

after that. What do you do when you've

risen to absolute success? Where is

there for you to go? Las Vegas, you

know. Wow. What? Some reward. You know

what I mean? Gee, that's great. You

know, okay, work as hard as you can and

you get to go from Mississippi to Las

Vegas. You know, it's like it's wrong.

You know, he he deserves something

better, but the music world doesn't have

the imagination to invent it for him.

And he wasn't lucky enough to have uh

come up with his own

uh his own guidance system. And once

you're gone, you can't ever come back.

When you're out of the blue and into the

black.

excited by what the some of the other

groups were doing and of course we were

excited by what we were doing and we

thought it didn't matter that there were

sometimes only 20 people in the

audience.

automobile. You may find yourself in a

beautiful house with a beautiful wife.

You may ask yourself, "Well,

do I work this?" You may ask yourself,

Soon as you step off on that stage and

the lights come on, you're not the same

uh anymore. You might be the same person

inside, but uh you got a spotlight on

you and and the guy at the bar doesn't.

I I'm more comfortable on stage than I

am in uh life, you know, and then and

certainly than I am writing. I'd much

rather perform than write any day

because it's easier. There's people

applauding, you know. I mean, it's all

right. You don't have to listen to

yourself. strange American phenomenon

where we take these heroes and we build

them up and we build them up and

blow them out of the sky.

Somebody like John Lennon, I mean, he

was fine until he came here and it's

American roulette time.

And what do you do if somebody comes at

you with uh with aggression?

I'd run.

I might try and talk to him as I was

running. Oh, peace, brother. Peace. you

know, but I I believe in run away and

live to fight another day.

When John died was obviously um enormous

shock.

I I couldn't believe it really because

um as we all know he was such a nice

person really. I mean he was stubborn

and there was certain things about him

which maybe people would have wanted to

change in him but you know he was such a

great person that it seemed ridiculous.

You know, I mean, some ways it's

understandable if somebody goes to try

and assassinate Adolf Hitler or

something, but John Lennon had just, you

know, given all that love and great

songs seemed ridiculous.

energy in rock and roll. New artists,

new ideas, new technologies to be

explored and a whole new way to present

the music.

beautiful or there's something about it

more information should be disseminated

in in in pop music. I'm not necessarily

talking about protest music or anything

else. I just think there is space in

songs for opinions to be given. It was a

slow day and the sun was beating on the

soldiers by the side of the road.

shop windows. The bomb in the baby

carriage was wired to the radio. These

are the days of miracles and wonder.

really uh change the way people feel

about a specific issue. I think what it

does do is affect the way an audience

and the listeners feel about themselves.

It kind of invests them with uh the

feeling that they can if they want to

change something they can do it.

As an optimist, I always like to say

yes, things got a little better, but

things still could get so much better.

Bob Gelof did such an fantastic job of

creating a spontaneous moment that

everybody, I think, for the only benefit

concert I've ever been involved in at

that level, the real excitement and

sense of purpose was quite genuine. With

every artist that I work with on it,

there really was a feeling that you've

got to go and do it cuz it really is

going to do some good.

Rock Alterism reached a peak with Live

Aid, a wildly successful benefit for

Famine Relief that also gave us some

knockout musical numbers.

20 years

What a long, strange trip it's been, you

know, when you think about it. I mean,

it's amazing that so many of us are

still around. But that's the beauty of

rock and roll. It keeps you young. It's

already too late to do anything about

rock and roll. You know, the damage has

been done. We're stuck with it. I don't

see any end. You know, they're going to

have to eventually drag us off stage

screaming and kicking and shouting.

Nothing much to it. Whistle through your

teeth and scar cuz it's all right.

Anytime I see somebody going out on a

whim and doing something a little

different, then there's that spark.

There's that rebellious spark, which is

what rock is. The heart starts going.

The adrenaline starts going. It's what

you love. It's what you are. It's it's

um it's within you. It's you. You are

what you are, and you love it.

You go as hard as you can until you get

the crowd as as high and so near orgasm.

And then you go twice as hard for as

long as you can until you drop. And that

to me is rock and roll.
