what happened to Humble Pie in the

latter half of 1968 Marriott made a

friend in Peter Frampton the two bonded

over their desire to be taken more

seriously as musicians Frampton's

bandmates initially rejected Marriott's

request for him to become the second

guitarist for the small faces

the small faces supported French singer

Johnny Halliday in December 1968 while

he was in the studio in Paris

another attempt by Marriott to enlarge

the small faces lineup was the holiday

sessions but it is said that tensions

reached a Breaking Point and the seeds

were planted for the band to split up in

the coming year the small faces and

Frampton record embryonic versions of

bang and what you will from Humble Pie's

debut album and the five artists can be

heard playing together as walls in

various configurations with holiday's

regular band

a tantalizing preview of one extended

Small Faces lineup might have sound like

can be found in their performances

together

in March 1969 it was revealed that the

small faces were breaking up in Marriott

and Frampton's plans to start a new band

together were made public

they signed with Andrew Luke oldham's

record company immediate records and

went by the name Humble Pie to play Down

expectations

as safe as yesterday is their debut

album was released in August 1969 and

reached His Highest Point at number 16

the UK album rankings

Town and Country their second album was

hastily released in the UK in November

1969 as immediate records was on the

edge of bankruptcy

a radical reworking of Graham Goldman's

foyer love served as the centerpiece of

the Humble Pie concerts acoustic set

which was followed by an energetic set

in its initial nine months of existence

the band produced some 30 songs many of

which stayed unheard for decades

according to recent tape archives Humble

Pie signed with a M records in 1970 and

D Anthony was appointed as their manager

with Marriott as the lead singer Anthony

suggested a more boisterous sound and

later that year the band's album was

published during this time Peter

Frampton purchased the black 1954 Les

Paul Custom that would later become

known as the Phoenix guitar and serve as

both his signature and favorite guitar

for the following 10 years

when a plane carrying Frampton stage

equipment crashed in Venezuela in 1980

during a South American tour the guitar

was thought to have been destroyed but

only sustained minor damage it was shown

the cover Frampton Comes Alive

in 2011 it was eventually delivered back

to Frampton

Grand Funk Railroad played a historic

Shea Stadium concert on July 9 1971 with

Humble Pie staring as the opening act

the performance broke the Beatles record

for the quickest selling Stadium

performance at the time also in 1971

Humble Pie issued their best-selling

album to date rock on as well as

performance rocking the Fillmore a live

album captured at the Fillmore East in

New York

the live album received a gold

certification from the riaa and peaked

at number 21 on the U.S billboard 200.

the US FM radio hit I Don't Need No

Doctor which peaked at number 73 on the

Billboard Hot 100 and helped the album

climb the charts quickly became a staple

Frampton had Departed the band by the

time the album was released and he later

found Fame as a solo performer

and as of February 2023 Peter Frampton

is still alive and well

Clem Clemson took over for Frampton and

Humble Pie shifted to a harsher sound I

lied a Marriott's Origins and Blues in

Seoul the two songs hot and nasty in 30

days in the hole were included on their

album with Clemson smoking which was

released in March 1972 the latter of

which became one of their best known

efforts it was the group's most

commercially successful record and

thanks in part to a rigorous touring

schedule it peaked at number six on the

U.S charts following smokin's Commercial

Success humble Pie's record company a m

combined the band's first two immediate

albums into one double album named lost

and found

as a result of the effective marketing

strategy the album peaked at number 37

on the billboard 200 list

to produce a more true to life r b feel

Marriott engaged three female backing

vocalists known as the blackberries

for the recording of eat it a double

album issued in April 1973 that featured

Marriott original some of which were

acoustic r b songs and a humble pie

concert record in Glasgow this lineup

included Sydney George on saxophone and

then Street ratch and thunderbox the 7th

and 8th albums respectively were both

released in 1974.

Humble Pie split up in 1975 due to

musical disagreements following the

release of this album and the goodbye

pie tour

after producing his debut Sello record

Marriott swiftly returned to the UK

late in 1979 Anthony City Jones from New

York had joined Bobby tinch a former

vocalist and guitarist for the Jeff Beck

Group and Marriott in Shirley now under

the management of Labor Krebs to

resurrect Humble Pie

they sent the song Marriott and Shirley

had just ridden full for a pretty face

to record companies they signed a

recording deal with Atlantic Records

subsidiary Adco and Don Arden the former

manager of the small faces band jet

records published their material in the

UK

full for a pretty face appeared on their

album onto Victory which was released in

April 1980. it peaked at number 52 on

the U.S Billboard Hot 100 and on the

billboard 200 onto Victory peaked at

number 60.

as part of the Rock and Roll Marathon

Bill Humble Pie toured the U.S in 1980

alongside Frank Moreno and mahogany rush

Angel and Mother's Finest this tour

lasts until the end of 1980. in 1981

Humble Pie recorded the album good for

the throat and went on tour with Ted

Nugent and Aerosmith in June of 1981.

the band originally intended to release

this album as a raw Edge rhythm and

blues album but their record label

demanded a more polished product the

band's earlier scheduled appearances

were postponed in April 1981 when

Marriott crushed his hand in a hotel

room door at the start of the

promotional tour for the album go for

the throat

Marriott layer developed a duodenal

ulcer which forced the cancellation of

all the remaining tour dates in Late

July 1981.

due to the determination of the Atlantic

contract and Libra Krebs financial

assistance this lineup split shortly

after

even worse the band's equipment truck

was also taken at an insult to injury

with Jim leverton Goldie mcjohn and

chicago-born drummer Fallon Williams III

Marriott formed a new version of humble

pie in 1982. the lineup entered pyramid

eye studios in Chattanooga Tennessee to

record three songs for an album after a

deal with Capricorn records fell through

as a result of the label ceasing to

trade with felon on drums and Dave

Hewitt from Babe Ruth on base the

recordings were completed but they were

not picked up by a record label in late

1983 Marriott broke up the group and

went back to England in 1988 Jerry

Shirley acquired the rights to the name

Humble Pie and reorganized the band with

new players

Charlie Hunn who sang and played lead in

Rhythm guitars was in the lineup

together with Wally stalker and Anthony

suti Jones on base

Scott Allen replaced Bevan on base a

little later in the year and Cleveland

guitarist Alan Greene took stalker's

place

from 1992 until 1996 the base is San

Neiman was a part of this lineup before

being replaced by Brad Johnson

Shirley was severely hurt in a car

accident in August 1999 and afterwards

moved back to England

without Shirley Charlie hunt continued

to perform live as humble pie

in 2000 drummer Jamie Darnell and

bassist Kent Bubba gascoigne were joined

by Rick Craig of Halloween they split up

fishing their tour and Hunt afterwards

joined fogcat

Bobby tench a former vocalist and

guitarist for Humble Pie new Rhythm

guitarist Dave Colwell an original

bassist Greg Ridley made comprise

Shirley's 2001 lineup

back on track the 13th studio album by

Humble Pie was created by them and was

released by Sanctuary records in 2002.

the band is banded when Ridley got sick

in the latter part of 2002

Frampton Clemson ribley and Shirley were

all present for the 2001 Steve Marriott

tribute concert at the London Astoria

which also included other early members

of humble pie with a ban he called Greg

Ridley's Humble Pie ribbly played two

shows in May 2003.

one of which was at a bar in Romania

later that year on November 19 2003 in

Spain he passed away from pneumonia and

its complications he was 62.

Jerry Shirley continued to control the

Humble Pie brand in 2018 and put

together a new band that he would direct

but not tour with

Dave bucket Colwell who had previously

performed and recorded with the group on

the 2002 album back on track was chosen

by Shirley to co-front the group on tour

with Jimmy Coons a former member of

Savoy Brown and Cactus

second guitarist James Roto rotundi

bassist David C gross who will be

replaced in 2019 by Ivan bodley and

drummer Bobby marks made up the new

lineup on August 31st 2018 they kicked

off a 15 show U.S tour in Riverhead New

York
