I've had 35 years in sports broadcasting,
and this is all unprecedented.

Back-to-back-to-back promotions,

out of the National League
and now into the Championship,

and it's happened just like that.

There's an incredible thing
already happened here.

Arguably, one of the greatest stories
in the history of football,

but if it happens again,

if there's another promotion
up to the Premier League,

and arguably,
you've got the greatest story

in the history of sport, right?

Sport. The whole lot.

about looking ahead to the Championship.

What do you think
the expectations will be?

What do you do after you make history?

It's like, how do you top that?

We'll talk about the Championship

Um, I think I took, like,
a solid three, four days, um, of basking

before, um, the terror set in
of where we were headed.

There wasn't much time to really bask.

[Harvey] I don't think people
genuinely realize how difficult it is

to get a team from National League
to League Two to League One,

and then to the Championship
in consecutive seasons.

It's a daunting prospect
when every other club

in the Championship this year
has played in the top tier

and there's only us that are yet to do it.

That bears repeating.

There is only one team in the Championship
that hasn't played in the top tier,

and that is Wrexham AFC.

[Moyes]
For you to challenge in the Championship

with the money of the teams coming down
from the Premier League,

you'll find it really difficult,

and that's where your supporters
will get the shock.

The games come thick and fast.

And the physical demands of-of the league

are obviously a lot higher
from the division we'd-we'd come from.

[commentator] That is one
of the greatest goals you will ever see.

This is such a tough division.

I genuinely think it's the toughest league
in the world bar none.

[Ker] The reality is, in the Championship,
you have any number of what I would call

sort of temporarily embarrassed
Premier League teams

like Ipswich Town and Leicester
and Southampton,

all of whom have dropped down
from Premier League this season.

The teams that come down, they always come
down with a lot of power in their squads.

[person] The journey this season is
to try and compete with clubs

who are running
proper big training centers, academies.

[commentator 2] Big stadiums,
big atmospheres and massive fan bases.

[person 2] Championship,
it's a battle of the bastards.

It's well-documented. It's the hardest
league in the world to win.

[Ker] The standings in the Championship
are often on such a razor's edge.

Every team has the ability
to beat everybody else.

And a run of a few good results can
rocket you to the top of the table.

A few bad results can
see you tumbling down

into the basement.

Of course, our worst-case scenario is
what happened to Luton Town,

who recently suffered
back-to-back relegations,

dropping from the Premier League
back to League One.

We are now at a table where we have to put
an excessive amount of money on red,

the red being Wrexham.

If we don't spin that wheel

and put that money on the table,
we have no chance of winning the prize.

Yet, what does that do
to the town of Wrexham

and its small football club
in the event it comes up black?

It's like you've chased this prize,
you've chased this dream,

you've achieved all this success,
and now the most daunting part starts.

[phone ringing]

I've watched more football videos
in this transfer market

than I think I have in any other,
to be honest.

Right now,
we're in the race to the finish line

to get ourselves ready
for the first home match of the season

against West Brom,
and we're not ready� [sighs] �at all.

We're still putting
the finishing touches on the pitch,

and the kop is just dirt and boulders.

We've already had to sign new players
like striker Ryan Hardie,

goalkeeper Danny Ward.

And there will be more
that we have to sign

that are coming in with huge contracts.

And while everyone at the Racecourse is
working their butts off,

everyone else has to go Down Under
for the preseason tour.

of the oldest professional football clubs

in the world, bought by a couple
of international actors in 2021,

which spiked a record-breaking
trifecta of promotions

all the way up to the Championship.

-It is history and Hollywood colliding.

When we looked at the numbers,

we knew Australia and New Zealand had
large support and following.

We were playing local clubs,
Melbourne Victory,

Sydney FC and Phoenix Wellington.

And so, when we showed up in Melbourne
and we showed up in Sydney,

and you have 37,000,
you have 42,000 people

coming to the match, it was mind-blowing.

-Up the town.
-Up the town.

Surprised the hell out of me. I mean�

Well, Hugh Jackman's got
a lot of relatives.

-Yeah, it's mostly Hugh. [chuckles]
-[exhales sharply]

[Mac] So the preseason tour is
a really good opportunity for Phil

and for us to see our new signings.

We have really high hopes
for Ryan Hardie, our new striker.

[Griffiths] Angles it wide.
Barnett drives it in. There's the second.

And it's the new recruit,
the Scotsman, Ryan Hardie.

[Mac] And for Danny Ward, who Phil
brought in to challenge Arthur in goal.

[producer] So, what do you think
about Ben Tozer and Ben Foster

going to New Zealand for holiday
with the team?

We sent them to New Zealand?

to New Zealand for the summer tour,

which was just absolutely unbelievable.

This is my second time.
It won't be my last.

There's actually a bar in Wellington
called The Welsh Dragon.

We walked in there,
and it almost felt like you were at home.

This is sort of me in my comfort zone.

I'm around Welsh people in a pub.

Even though I'm 12,000,
13,000 miles from home,

you're just made to feel
like part of the family.

It's a tremendous place.

But we got some very bad news
out of Sydney.

[supporters cheering]

[Griffiths] Ollie Rathbone.

With five minutes to go
in this first half.

Putting Rhyan Grant under pressure.

[whistle blows]

[Griffiths]
He stayed down after that challenge.

The ball came to me
on the edge of the box.

I think I chested it down and kind of was
in two minds whether to shoot or not.

Defender's kind of read me,
so we were kind of scrapping for the ball.

And then in the middle of it all,
I just felt a big crack.

And at that point,
I knew it was gonna be a serious one.

Yeah, finding out
that I'd ruptured the ligament.

[Harvey] Ollie Rathbone's injury, in
particular, was one I think that hurt us.

Because going into the season,

I think most people would've had
Ollie Rathbone in that starting 11.

And not to have him available
due to the injury was a big blow.

[Mac] So in order for us to compete
in Championship,

we're going to have to make changes

-all over the place�
-[whistle blows]

�but the biggest change is
going to happen on the pitch,

which, of course, is the most devastating.

[? pensive music playing]

[Mac] Whenever you're talking
about losing a large amount of people,

beloved players,

you run the risk of the supporters
no longer supporting them.

Because they're not following a kit.

They're following a human being.

And so making that transition is
really difficult.

[person 4] Mark Howard's left
with everyone's best regards.

He was a great character for us.

He's starting for Salford.
Good luck to him.

-[person 5] Yeah.
-Steven Fletcher was released by Wrexham.

The clutch man just coming off the bench,

getting you a goal whenever you needed it.

You just felt that excitement.

The whole stadium believed
that something was gonna happen

whenever Fletch came onto the pitch.

I'm just blessed we got to see him
in a Wrexham shirt.

What an absolute honor it was.

Paul Mullin, legendary striker
for Wrexham,

has joined Wigan on a season-long loan.

[person 6] I'm gutted. I thought
Mullin was gonna be with us a bit longer.

People will say, "You know,
we shouldn't be looking back,

and we should look forward,"
and it's like, well,

I can't remember the last time we had
a striker like Paul Mullin, have we?

[commentator 3] And he scores!

-And Mullin scores his hundredth!
-[supporters cheering]

[birds squawking]

[Mullin] During the summer�

Ryan Lowe, Wigan's manager,
got in touch and�

We met up and had a chat and�

He told me his idea was for me to play me
every week again and�

Then, obviously Wigan was close to home,
so that was another tick.

[person 7] Paul Mullin is the face
of what we've just achieved.

[person 8] It's a shame one, right?
[stammers] He scored a hundred goals.

He's a living legend in our lifetime.

You sort of realize
that these players have authored

some of the greatest moments of your life.

It's tough when they leave, you know,

because we're not here
if not for Paul Mullin.

Why is Paul Mullin gone?

Why did
Parky not give Paul Mullin a chance?

There's a kind of an understanding
that, like, they made this contribution.

There's a baton that's handed off,
and the next group goes, you know?

[supporters chanting]

[Ker] He's been
an incredible servant to the club.

I think he's, you know,
he has earned the-the title of legend.

If I were you, I'd buy him.

You would put your job on the line.

-I get fired. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-Yeah, you'd get fired, and Paul doesn't.

He might not be worth it.

-He can be worth it.
-Okay.

But I hope that it remains for him
a source of tremendous pride

f-for what he's achieved for us and what
he's delivered for the people of Wrexham.

I'm quite proud.
I have had many moments of scoring goals

and us as a team have had many moments of
giving the town its pride back.

And givin' a real� real representation
of what the town means to people.

I still look back now,
the day of Boreham Wood

when we get promoted as a team,

and I seen grown men on the pitch crying,
thanking me.

[Ker] I think it was the anniversary
of the Boreham Wood game the other day,

and we put up a clip of his first goal,
and I texted him, being like�

[stammers] �earnestly saying that's one
of the greatest moments of my life.

[smacks lips]
And it really genuinely is. [chuckles]

Sorry.

[? piano playing]

Bailey was a passionate
and dedicated Wrexham FC fan.

Oh. [stammering] There's no question.

-Wrexham FC was his number one priority.
-He would say, "It is my life."

[Jamie] Our bar,
which was just-just a little shed,

just now called Bailey's Bar.

He'd come home at night,
and he'd go into his bar,

and all you can hear is
Wrexham songs being sung all night.

[chanting]
La, la, la, la, la, la, Wrexham.

What's his name?

[Jamie]
Have a look at it, have a look at it.

Last year, before we clinched
the Championship at the Charlton match,

I met a man named Jamie.

Jamie made me aware of a tragedy
that happened to he-he and his family.

They lost their son Bailey.
[inhales deeply]

When did he pass?

September 2023. Age twenty.

I'm really sorry.

That's not supposed to happen.

-All I wanted for him�
-I'm really sorry about that.

-That's not supposed to happen.
-Thank you.

We went through the footage,
and we were looking back

to the first time that I'd ever
been to the Racecourse Ground.

Wow.

It shows that I met Bailey on
the first day I was ever here.

? No one's invested so much as a penny ?

[Reynolds] He was one of a group of people
who were singing outside the Racecourse,

and we chatted, and it was my first
introduction to the spirit of Wrexham.

That was amazing!

-[Mac chuckles]
-[cheering]

And I'm so grateful for it because
it was actually that indoctrination.

It was that moment where I was, like�
[gasps] �"Oh, I understand

the language of this place."

And it was actually
Bailey who delivered that.

Saturday, the 23rd of September 2023.

-It was Stockport away.
-[whistle blows]

[Griffiths]
And there is the final whistle.

Wrexham losing 5-0 at Stockport.

They went to see a band in the pub,

and off I went to pick him up

and he just got out of the car too quick.

Um, lost his footing, and he banged
his head and he was unconscious.

Um� [chuckles]

-You-You phoned the ambulance.
-[exhales sharply] Yeah.

Bailey regained his consciousness,
and then he was up on his feet.

And I kept saying,
"You-You all right? You all right?"

So, I said, "You need to go to hospital."

He said, "No, no, Dad, I'm fine.
I'm fine. I just want to go home."

-And- Yeah.
-And we just monitored him that night,

didn't we, because-

Literally every hour or two,
I was just going in,

checking him, checking him,
checking in on him, and he was�

He was okay, and then�
then the next day� [sighs] �he went out.

Um, went to meet his friends
down in the Queens, didn't he?

And then he returned home,
and he was okay.

And then the last words he said to me was,
"I'm going to bed now, Dad.

Um, don't forget the Bradford tickets go
on sale at 10 o'clock in the morning."

[breathing shakily]

They'd identified that he'd
actually fractured his skull.

[Anne Marie] He hasn't just got a crack
on the brain, he's got a-a bleed.

-[Anne Marie sighs]
-[exhales sharply, kisses]

-Bailey loved helping others, so it was�
-He loved people.

He would want to help
as many people as he could.

Um, because we'd agreed for him
to be an organ donor,

the next morning we were told,

his heart and lungs were already on
the way to saving two people's lives.

[Jamie] Everyone was just crushed.

[Anne Marie] It was a week
after the one-year anniversary.

I came down one morning,
and there was the card and letter.

[Matthew] "To my donor's family.

I hope this card and letter find you well.

On the 28th of September 2023,
I underwent heart transplant surgery

at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

I wanted to write and say how sorry I was
for your loss, but to also thank you.

Without your loss, I would not have
received the second chance of life

that I have been given."

"I will be eternally grateful for this,
and I cannot express in words

what this has done
for myself and my family."

"My name is Matthew.

I live in Shropshire with my wife,
Alexandra, and daughter, Grace.

Grace has just turned 16
and started college."

"Being able to watch her attend her prom
and start her new independence at college

is something I will never
take for granted."

"The doctors are pleased with my progress
and my heart is working well and healthy."

"Forever grateful, Matthew."

it just� it was just amazing.

we became emotionally involved with this.

It made our family tighter,
right as we are being,

um, pushed together by the greater force
of the� of the community,

And the players, uh,
the early players, we just loved them.

Going into the season
and watching the new players coming in,

I never even heard of half of them, right?
And-And yet here we are.

I didn't know who to trust,

and I didn't know what the team
composition was gonna look like.

It's just something gets lost with that.

them there. They've gone massive.

and there's huge pressure
on Parkinson to make sure

that we have done this wisely, that we've
invested well, and we've got it correct.

The difficulty in the games at the moment

through one of the worst things that�

But Matthew was so close to death.

Autumn, 2022,
it hit me one morning where it felt

like I had woken up
with a bag over my head.

I was struggling to breathe.

I was struggling to catch my breath.

I was struggling to move my body.

I was diagnosed
with left ventricle heart failure.

At an estimate,
they've given him six weeks.

[Matthew] I got a phone call.

A transplant team said to me,

"We think we've found something
that's suitable for your body."

So, the surgeon came to Matt's bedside
and said, "It's a go.

You've got 20 minutes."

[? gentle music plays]

I was told during my stay in hospital,
if I wanted to reach out,

there was a process that I could follow
to be able to say thank you to my donor.

They told me about Bailey,

and he was the most loving, caring,
kindhearted young man and son.

It, uh�

It is truly the greatest gift
that I could ever be given.

And I'm forever grateful.

[Griffiths] Good morning. First home game
in the Championship. Let's go.

That's the right way to kick this off.

But what's been abundantly clear
and ceaseless since the day we got here,

was that it's the people.

It is a continuum of people in the town

and now all over the world rooting
for a team, playing for a team.

to see a Wrexham side lining up

Obviously Rob and Ryan have
got the best of intentions

for the football club,
that much is absolutely clear.

But the reality is,
and look at Sheffield Wednesday,

when Chansiri came in to take over
at Sheffield Wednesday,

his vision was the same
as Rob and Ryan's vision.

He saw an opportunity to get
the club into the Premier League,

but they've spent too much money

and they can't find a way
to pay the debts off.

Sheffield Wednesday fans were mad
because of the financial straits

that they got themselves into,

and at that point, you've got
to be wary of the fact that even those

with the best of intentions,
it can all go horribly wrong.

And, suddenly,
a big club is almost no club.

And there are Wrexham fans
who will fear that a little bit.

You know,
that the club has gone up so quickly

and the bigger the numbers get,

the greater the risk potentially gets
as well.

And all of a sudden, everything's gone.

Businesses that were going very, very well

alongside a football club
are now suddenly struggling.

You've got to be honest, it's not been
the best of starts for Wrexham, right?

Because Wrexham are trying to cope
with the jump up to a new division

with a whole new set of players.

Relegation is a potential outcome here.

Wrexham could go down.
