It's a vital part of selection

to be able to control your emotions.

I used to take my family head off
and leave it firmly on my doorstep.

And when I used
to get into Afghanistan,

I used to pick up
my operational head

and stick that on,
and it wasn't full of emotion.

It was just my Afghan head.

in doing what I had to do.

And we've never been right.

In just hours,
they will be sent on a mission

testing everything
they have learned so far.

At this stage of selection,
character and personality's massive.

You don't want someone
that's narcissistic,

but you do.

You don't want someone that's
semi-psychopathic, but you do.

It's about control -
controlling the narcissism,

controlling
the psychopathic tendencies,

because if you don't control it,
you could lose your life.

All right, D. So, what I did today

is I've put some more
psych tests through... Mm-hm.

..to see where their strengths are,

where their weaknesses are
and... OK.

Military doctor Sundeep
has put each remaining recruit

through a test deigned to reveal
hidden personality traits.

A couple of surprising results.

Even I was surprised by some of
the things that are coming through.

The results of number six,
Charlie, stand out.

His figures - interesting.
He's got pretty much

most of the characteristics
that we're looking for.

The big "but" with him -
in terms of emotional stability,

he's the lowest of the group.

It's all in your mind.

I've had a privileged background.

From a schooling perspective,
I had a good education.

I didn't come from a broken home.

Loving parents.

If you compare yourself
to the rest of the world,

then, you know, I'd hit the jackpot.

Um, and up until five years ago,
I couldn't fault it.

But you're exactly right. You know,
has he got a brain on him? Yes.

Um, is he a door kicker? No.

What I'm worried about with him
is that he'll break mentally.

That's what I would put down
as a red flag.

Moses comes across
as someone who is rock solid,

physically and mentally,

but, you know, a lot of the guys
that project strength,

they tend to sometimes
be hiding things.

I've seen cracks
in his mental stability.

If he goes onto the final stage
of this course,

ie the interrogation,
I can see him cracking.

This is probably the easiest session
you're going to get.

If you don't start livening up,

I was in prison for two years.

That's when I was doing robberies.
It was scary coming out.

When you have someone
that feeds you,

tells you when to go shower,
tells you when to go socialise,

what to do petrified me.

is about impulsiveness

and that ability to control.

The question for us is going to be
whether he has genuinely learnt.

But when he's under stress again,

that replicates operating

the teams must cover 8km
of harsh terrain

before scaling a 2,000m peak.

First to the top
will be extracted by helicopter.

The final exercise in the jungle
is a test of character.

When extreme pressure and
extreme stress is placed on you,

your true character
will always be exposed.

Can you dig deep within yourself

and control it for mission success?

you have been chosen as team leader.

The leader of team one is Steven...

Fight! ..whose inability to control
aggression marked him out to the DS.

Steven was kicked out of the army
aged 19 due to a gambling addiction.

six months after being discharged.

is to find a hidden box of supplies

at a location known as a cache.

A cache is a location that some

vital bit of equipment
or information has been left.

There could be weapons,
there could be money,

there could be anything
that's going to assist you

to get out of that country alive.

We're going to move down a bit
out of the spray,

finishes hiding their box,

makes a discovery.

Steven's team start their ascent.

It's a race to the summit

where only one team
will be airlifted back to base.

Two teams of recruits are on the
final stage of a mission,

racing each other to
a helicopter extraction point.

On an operation, you have to get to
the extraction point.

There was one time when we were
trying to make our way to a safe LS,

landing site, for the helicopter to
come back in on.

I was point man, leading the
squadron out of this gunfight

and we were getting
information coming in that there

was 400 enemy forces that had

basically gathered and were trying
to close in and fix our

position and start
basically killing us.

Keep pushing. Let's go.

That's it just push, push, push,
dig in.

And then we'd just get told again,
there's four guys setting up

a hasty ambush in front of the
point man and you're like, "Jesus,"

and my mouth's going dry.

I suddenly had a reality check and
was like,

"Maybe we're not getting out of
here."

250 left, boys.

50 minutes, we get to the top.

And when I was thinking that, I just
pictured my daughter and I

wondered whether I'd see her again.

And then you just suddenly kick back
into, "Right, let's get on this.

"We're not dead yet, let's get
out of here."

Let's go.

You know, with his background and
being discharged from the military,

this, for him, is sort of like a
second chance.

He overdoes it, doesn't he,
basically?

And he sort of fucks up by overdoing
it, but I think with a bit

of guidance, I think he'll be an
asset to any team

because he's the type of guy, when
the shit times are there,

he's the one that will just keep on
going and going and going and going.

I just feel that that guy,
you know, even with the world on his

shoulders, he'd ask for more
and not ask for any help doing it.

Very impressive.

You know, he's always
been a strong contender,

but the only thing I'll say against
him is I do feel that he's

not in his natural surroundings
with these people.

He's just... He's just like that,

He's a grafter, but he just...

I came to cycling quite late,
actually.

I certainly got much better results
in cycling than I did in anything

else I'd done sports wise

and then when I got into the
competitive cycling

that just trumped everything else
I'd done so far.

Winning's a big thing, yeah.
It's a great feeling.

For me, I would sit down at the
beginning of the year and

plan the whole year. We do a diary
of racing and training

and I would pick, you know, maybe
even just one race

that I'd desperately want to win,

but you could have months and months
leading up to that

of preparation and training and then
to actually win that one race,

you enjoy it, yeah, you love it.

Friends and family and all your
team mates giving you praise

and everything and you just, yeah,
it's a great feeling.

over the years and missing

people's weddings to go bike racing

home for seven days and have

had no contact with their families.
