Contrary to popular opinion, it was not
the purpose of these machines to kill,

but rather to maintain lingering life
under maximum discomfort.

In the art of torture, death is merely a
byproduct, not an end.

The premature demise of a victim is
considered a failure.

Many an executioner found himself
permanently unemployed by having too

hand.

With the development of machine
technology, newer, finer methods of

pain were discovered.

Probably the most famous of these
instruments was the rack.

Here the victim was stretched upon the
frame with his wrists and ankles bound

rollers at each end.

Failure on his part to give proper
answers to the inquisitors would cause

ropes to be tightened with mathematical
certainty, causing at a minimum severe

dislocation of the limbs.

There were times when the victim was of
such stamina and durability that the

Water to most people is merely something
to drink.

Hot or cold, drop by drop, or by the
bucketful, water was the

Here we have the bed of nails.

If a victim of the torture room was
subject to fainting spells or tired too

rapidly, there was always this prickly
device on which he could lie down for a

short rest.

One would, however, need a strong skin
to get any sleep on this bed.

Torture and sadism has flourished in all
cultures and in all civilizations for

thousands of years.

But to many, torture was honed to its
finest sadistic point by the oriental

mind. Here in Singapore, through gory
realistic figurines, the past is

for us in hideous detail.

Each of these tortures was designed to
cure a specific human failing, and each

did its job extremely well.

Lust, greed, cowardice.

Every sin of man had an accompanying
punishment.

This young lad was accused of being
disrespectful to his parents.

Generation to generation passed on the
belief that fear of punishment was a

necessary deterrent in curbing man's
innate evil.

Thus, even today, a modern -day couple
brings a young son to view this horror

museum as part of his education.

This special purifying bath was devised
for young brides who were tempted to

dally with their husband's best friends
while the breadwinner was away from

home. An unforgivable sin.

For the transgressor who had a habit of
speaking out of turn, this served as a

remarkable cure.

In fact, the Chinese had a sure cure for
almost everything.

Ulcers, indigestion,

Even migraine headaches.

But you might say that although the
doctor was able to effect a cure, in

cases he lost the patient.

In spite of all the fun man seemed to be
having torturing his fellow man along

about the 18th century, he began to
delude himself that he had become too

civilized to enjoy torture.

banned forever.

The rack, the bed of nails, and Iron
Maiden were left to gather cobwebs in

museums as mementos of other times and
other places.

Man said, those days are past and gone

That is, most of man did, all except our

exists, even though hampered by laws

and restrictions.

Although we may look on these scenes
with loathing and disgust, we must try

understand that so steep was the
Oriental in a torture -oriented culture

tended to look on punishment as a
religion and an accepted way of

training and discipline.

Together with holding human life
cheaply, it has molded and colored the

complex Eastern man into a being Western
man does not readily comprehend.

Even today we read of atrocities and
tortures that stun the mind.

But the seeds of this behavior were
planted centuries ago.

We are now merely witnessing the
heritage of sadism.

The traits of oriental forefathers are
still visible in present -day culture.

The rites and practices of torture can
be seen in everyday modern life.

Some harmless, some cruel and sadistic.
But all of it fascinating as a study of

the sadistic human being.

It's often said that thunder is the
devil's awakening, and that the full

brings out the madness in witches.

Well, perhaps it's the darkness of
evening.

that brings out the sickness in man.

The beat of primitive rhythms excites
long -hidden desires.

There is a leap back through time to the
collective unconsciousness to find the

longing and yearning buried there
generations ago.

Each beat is a step that releases the
impulse buried under a multitude of

restrictions and taboos.

Every drink frees from the unconscious,
the lust and wants, that normally remain

chained there.

In all the little fun and games,
innocent little pastimes that develop

evening's enjoyment can be seen the
remnants of primitive behavior.

This is

theoretically an art contest on a
slightly different and strange campus.

But artists have been known to paint on
stranger things.

Art for art's sake is their motto.

It's doubtful, however, if any of these
fine works will ever hang in the loo.

Probably the only hanging they'll ever
get is on tomorrow's clothesline.

Tonight, though, the creative instinct
flows freely.

If one can get one's mind off the
subject and on to the subject matter...

we can see the most curious figurations
developing.

The snake, the octopus, strange sexual
symbols indeed.

From out of what corner of the mind do
these drawings come?

One might also wonder why this artist
had the desire to draw on the flesh

than the panty.

Could it be that somewhere in the deep
recesses of his mind...

He is feeling the same thrill in marking
this girl that the torturer once felt

in laying the hot branding iron to the
skin and leaving his mold.

There are times when man must think that
there is nothing more to be done to the

human body than what has already been

But then along comes an artist, a
creative genius, a man with a new idea,

approach.

To build a symphony of lashing arms and

Oh, what a joy of creation to release

The results of this mad, capering couple
will be immortalized on canvas forever.

And some poor housewife will someday be
standing before it in a museum, racking

her brain to arrive at the artist's
inner meaning and true soul.

you may think he's completely crazy but
in the world of art he is a serious

pioneer in new forms of self -expression
he is constantly reaching and

stretching to keep his creative mind
alive his style is as individual as his

haircut both are completely his with
which to experiment

If some painters like a broad canvas,
others prefer one of a more limited

nature.

This artist's work will not achieve
immortality, but will stay alive only

days or weeks, depending on the number
of baths his canvas takes.

Never mind, he works for the fun of it.
And you must admit, it has its

compensations. But he'd better be
careful. A little slip could earn him a

slap.

In fact, for the unskilled craftsman, it
could turn out to be hazardous work.

The exacting artisan has finished his
masterpiece.

One wonders what a psychiatrist would
have to say about this human Rorschach

test. But I don't imagine many patients
would walk into an office looking like

this.

The history of man, it is often said,
can be seen in the history of his art.

Probably no form of art is more
universal than the art of tattooing.

This strange form of body mutilation has
been practiced from ancient times until

today in all four corners of the earth.

From the most primitive tribes to the
most modern cities.

From the Orient to New York.

Tattooing is extremely painful and
dangerous to the subject.

Each needle prick can be felt as it
tears the skin.

Each cut is agony even if infection does
not form.

And yet the art continues through the
centuries.

In this incredible bizarre artistry,
handed down from generation to

He is that one percent.

An illusion that is shattered once he

They walk away smiling, cured.

Yet they know they will soon be back to
endure the pain of breaking the habit.

That their cure is a fleeting one.

Like a cloud.

For those who can no longer find the
relief they seek through drugs.

For those who recognize the futility of
dope addiction.

And for those who can find an answer
nowhere, there is always one solution.

Suicide.

In almost every nation on this earth,
there is a special suicide spot, usually

Here, among the tranquil beauty of

flesh is gone, so is the misery and the

Who cares now what the purpose was of
their deaths or lives?

Why these people died, how they lived,
has long since been forgotten.

All that is left is the remaining parts
of their earthly bodies heaped together

into grotesque mounds.

Immortality is brief.

Soon he will be a curio or a trinket to
be gathered here on the beach as is done

in Okinawa.

To be scrubbed and scoured and finally
sold as a memento.

A memento for sadists around the world.

If you think you're back watching the
torture of the Middle Ages, you're

And this is not the rack or the cross.

It's a device for increasing one's

morning scolding her children for

themselves dirty.

She couldn't take the time to wipe the
mud off her kids. She had an appointment

at the beauty parlor.

Mud is a wonderful thing.

Primitive man thought it had mystical
powers.

Some used it as a body decoration.

Children, of course, just like the feel
of it.

But this modern, well -educated woman
knows that its real secret is in beauty.

It cleans the pores, tightens the skin.

circulates the blood, removes wrinkles.

Well, would you believe she just likes
the feel of it? Just like her children?

If it doesn't feel good on, it probably
feels good when taken off.

Something like hitting yourself with a
hammer because it feels so good when it

Little will her husband know the pain
and anguish that she endured to make

herself beautiful.

The goddess of beauty is no easy

In most parts of the world, the sting of
the bumblebee is known in many cases to

It's an ancient Japanese remedy, as well
as a form of torture.

The doctor works efficiently and with
great precision, for he is a specialist

this particular procedure.

He determines the most sensitive areas
of the nervous system and with very fine

needles punches the skin of the patient.

He then fits a strip of resin into the
puncture and with a red -hot wick burns

the resin into the flesh.

It's not the external searing of skin
which brings about the cure.

but rather the internal burning of
cells.

The resin applied over and over again
penetrates almost one -half inch into

skin.

This is all quite horrifying to us, but
the afflicted claim remarkable cures and

miraculous results.

Perhaps it's the torture itself which is
truly responsible for the relief of

symptoms.

It's incredibly painful, this burning
through the flesh, and none of us would

able to endure it without anesthesia.

But the Japanese people, children as
well, are trained from birth to

The diagnosis and cure are not simple,
but the good man hopes this prescription

will relieve the symptoms.

For temporary relief, the local guru
administers one of his own remedies.

Works fine for migraine headaches, but
it hasn't proved too successful on

patients with nervous disorders.

In case you're sadistically inclined and
would like to try it at home.

The theory is that if you dangle a mouse
in front of the victim and threaten to

throw it in her mouth, she'll have such
an attack of fright anticipating the

prospect, her migraine will be knocked
right out of her head.

This is only a theory.

But if you think the patient is having a
rough time, imagine what the poor mouse

is going through.
