if San Francisco hadn't been the city it

is the Love Generation might have been

stillborn

but then the flower children as the

grass in spring could have grown

anywhere regardless of how it happened

the fact is here is where it started

back in the 50s San Francisco was

elected father-mother wet nurse and

undertaker for a people called The Beat

Generation a group of black stocking

turtleneck bearded malcontents who holed

up in the North Beach Hills and berated

the world at large the early 60s saw a

major unveiling of appetites and morals

as San Francisco became the neon studded

showcase for hundreds of hippie girls

and straight girls who work as topless

dancers and waitresses dressed in net

stockings and little else while the

nation was trying to decide whether the

female breast was obscene or to be seen

a thing called a flower child started

sprouting in the parks of San Francisco

and went on to grow and flourish in the

cities of the Western world claiming

that he and his were only concerned with

something called love thy fellow man the

hippies found a way to express this

feeling hate 18,000 members of the love

tribe made a haven and sanctuary for

their turned on brethren who flocked

from all over the country to the 50 odd

blocks around the crossroads of Haight

Ashbury whether you call him hippie

flower child or Freeman he stands as a

signpost some sociologists believe is

pointing to a social revolution rather

than just a fad he is young and he has a

dream of peace and brotherhood but he

thinks more about it and does more about

it then would have the youth of decades

passed even in the midst of the most

affluent society on earth there are

still things which saddened him poverty

intolerance and war the 8 to 5 world or

straight society to him as materialistic

hypocritical and generally pathetic

on the other hand he has been called

everything from a dope fiend to a

likeness of this country's pioneers to a

reincarnation of the original Christian

he doesn't care who controls America or

who sits on the regal presidencies of

Europe and Asia so long as they are

compassionate a thing of which

governments seem discouragingly

incapable he is attempting to construct

a peaceful world but his tools are not

made of steel and brass and plastic but

of meditation spiritualism and love to

him the straight world makes social

changes with bayonets napalm and the

power of the atom hippies believe they

can make social changes with marijuana

LSD and something called flower power

in short The Love Generation wishes to

share its ways of living a peaceful life

with the rest of the world and this is

like it is you drop out in your mind and

start showing signs physically and

getting away like your hair gets longer

start wearing what do you want to wear

freaky clothes or Matalin whatever you

feel like you should wear that's what

you wear but you can make it that's

that's beautiful if you can't make it

you're not really ridden if you're with

your trip you'll make it in society or

out of it how do I feel about money I

love it for what it does but I hate it

for what it does it's a fantastic tool

and it's all readiness but people

worship you that's awful

it is a tool and I shouldn't be a gun

people reverse that they use themselves

as the tool and money is their God I

think half the fun is you know anyone in

the joints and hiding from the cops and

shit they try and bust every group

because they're trying to get the groups

out because the groups are promoting you

walk down the street there everybody

knew everybody if they didn't know they

pat you on the head of something anyway

everyone know what everyone else was

into especially on the hate the

apartments had like numbers and you

never said anybody's name you said 704

730 a cake that's what they're doing the

colonies and apartment houses everyone

who lived there knew everyone else know

five minutes there was nobody there they

pack up and leave so fast because

everybody would collapse

once I was in Vermont and there was a

colony up there Group gropes in the

Attic every night you just keep running

from bed to bed going to the next trip

and health department came watching up

everybody on the whole place that was

living in the main house had it and it

had it for months it kept giving it to

each other again and again and really

got to be a drag

it's a lot of it going and nobody tells

anybody till it's over

one guy living with us was total

fetishist unbelievable fetishes I would

I would be sleeping and my room was next

to the bathroom he had to work in the

bathroom to get through he used to plug

up my nose with toilet paper while I was

asleep put wet toilet paper in light

years rub sand on your cheek and then

hide under the bed so you'd wake up and

not know it was happening

kids becoming sick to those hospitals I

had nothing to do it they possibly

talk about one incident that happened

where there's those street people were

going they'd be around to like 12 and

then they'd go down to the front the

storefront at the biggest head which was

a complete freak show they blow your

mind it was so sad and at times happy

people had just hitched in from New York

didn't know what was happening

smashed out of their minds on drugs

not being able to function everybody was

sort of laughing and then just looking

scared everybody pick up the vibes and

be bad

like I knew where they were going I know

it was a bum trip and they stopped

laughing you know when the Sun went down

and around 3:00 in the morning all you'd

see was speeds it's guy hug he's another

brilliant totally brilliant completely

space no balance trips all the time

can't stand up straight you step over

his body for three days on the floor and

he wasn't even in it constantly and then

he'd get up and walk out and come back

to fall out against the three more days

we would totally broke at one time and

we had five dollars left and he goes out

and spend the last five dollars we had

on beats because he thought they were

pretty to bring back to it so we had to

beat and we started going at it going to

antique stores asking us you know um

attributes could they give it to us I

did and we came out tremendous speeds

you never saw before and started making

a trippy things out of them

we took telephone wire and made dragons

somebody know how to weave we had a

beautiful thing going most of the head

stops would take them but it was your

thing it was your necklace and you hated

to give it up when you finished it

are you going to see it in the window

every day you'll find what people think

there's a lot of sensualism in nudists a

lot of like excitement I'm gonna find

when you get down to there

the real thing it's not exciting at all

you're finally disillusioning in that

way you'll find that you haven't got any

clothes you haven't got anything to

depend on you have no you have no other

face you've got your face you got your

head no other had no other face and it's

I can feel it in the air I mean just

look around look the buildings look at

the people how come they're all on

bummers you know people there are on

constant bombers nobody smiles and even

more they just you know walk around work

eight hours they go home here their wife

bitch and you know kids drive up nuts

that ain't no way to spend your life why

not have a good time you know enjoy life

out the drugs you know having to drop

out every day to get away from society

well it drives drugs are not the answer

and drive drugs are not the real way of

traffic you know sometimes they can be a

catalyst to make you uh make you slow

down if you get stoned you are you

it from there on it's uh it's a matter

of where your mind goes because if your

mind goes one way with a drug dependence

thing then you you matter you're just

acid the first time you take acid

usually you get a host nation you know

whose natori effect there a lot of

people that take acid 10 12 15 times

expect they don't go beyond the

what's out there and when the body is

more attuned to what's out there then

you're more tuned to your thing

lot of people are putting it on a

religious level that's up let's take it

as the holy sacrament to our new

religion why why not just you know like

that

let it be around it's a natural thing

shouldn't be a religious thing you're

making the mistake even greater you're

making it so that the average man says

well if I'm in it to turn on I'll have

to take the acid okay this is what he's

thinking he says well I'm taking the

sacrament of a religion that maybe I

don't even want to have anything to do

it asleep

make a spiritual discovery always new

religions I don't want a religious

person I don't worry there's a religious

drug out of landing and doing it and he

shied away from but if he would think of

it as being a natural thing it's

available to him they could really help

his mind where they work on his mind any

sitting down playing marbles or buying

selling dope or whatever I don't know I

don't pay any attention to them

that's the haight-ashbury pretty much

naturally there because it's hate it's

really a city of dropouts that have have

not really copped out to themselves

copying out to yourself means knowing

without even questioning yourself though

you're there you're where you want to be

and you're doing what you want to do in

your mind

and also both donkeys cutters hippy done

Mahad is hitting it you have a hard time

plastic type hippies or kids who run

away from home and all these sort of

pseudo hippies where their hand you know

the noisy hippies who make all sorts of

sounds about how rotten society is and

how they're dropping out getting away

from all those horrible crass

commercialism that attitude strikes me

as completely phony because they're not

getting away from them if they were

being true to what they profess they go

out in the country somewhere and support

themselves entirely they're putting down

society at the same time they expect

from society where the capital is to

support them there are some hippies who

say nuts to this whole scene we want to

get away from at all they go out in the

country and then if a person says that's

fine but they're hippies seen in this

aspect of justice the beatniks were we

reject those horrible society were

dropping out of it sitting around

now you've got a lot of people digging

Mahatma Gandhi Allen gets her people who

people who don't sell soaps or whatever

they're people suddenly made somebody's

mind quick and I would much rather have

a leader that made my mind work my body

and I think so enjoyable target level if

a group of people getting together you

know usually people that don't know each

other you know they're like different

tribes from all over you know the city

come together you know small groups of

friends and we'll start out like when

there's small groups of friends in a

little circle and all of a sudden the

circles start combining become a big

group you know and everyone knows

everyone

it's it's sort of like a meeting place

for all these groovy people because they

all come together you know they start to

accept each other and find out what

everyone's doing what they're doing this

is really enjoyable but that I've also

been to a lot of dead women that have

you know turn into riots like there was

one in LA good for thought that turned

into a and it wasn't even the hippies to

which they blamed it up there are a lot

of people that were drunk they started

drinking and getting rowdy and you know

they blamed it on us well I'm sure we

had something to do with them but also

the straight people had something to do

with it you have two beautiful because

they're so independent they're like

human beings they have their little

bingo trips going and their little games

with other cats they said they're over

the world and they just look at you and

as if to say wow I know what's going on

you know yeah good get if you can and

there isn't very much difference between

human being in the animal state just

behind us or in front of us right here

which well living a happy life I could

say when I started it was because I was

really a coward

I really didn't want to think a lot of

things but I was having to go you know

in to illustrate world we were just too

many games being involved and I found

myself not being able to play the game

beyond the hippie life at first gave me

more of a release so you're just a lot

lot more freer

trainer in your life but we're not

really very free the police are

constantly hassling you know you left on

the street with your parent below your

ears and a cat hassle

it's not really a lot more freer with

the establishment on that place were

living there it's just a lot more free

or like if I don't exercise I can't get

flabby have a healthy body and you have

a healthy mind you know it is it's like

if your body's not healthy uh you're

thinking about your body and that's all

your mind is thinking about it Oh God

you know you're gonna die so if you're

really helping your mind scan here we

really do other things I consider my

functioning tool it's something we need

right now because after a while I think

the bodies wouldn't really be that

might can do but right now the body's a

very good functional tool

completely fall but it was like too much

people can take acid and like bad trips

you can't deny it

the first time you're in it what I

being aware that the other one is good

but then really down deep underneath it

people and not be aware of it because

nudist camp we've got to take nudity out

of the nudist beach it's out of the new
