- I've got a lot of pressure
on me on August 29th.

Cameraman:
Look at this one.

- But, the British Bulldog
is coming to Wembley Stadium,

and I'm not coming to
Wembley Stadium to lose.

- "The Hitman" Bret Hart.

The British Bulldog,
Davey Boy Smith...

About to collide here!

- I was the sister
who was torn

between her brother
and her husband.

- It's one of my greatest
matches of my career for sure.

- One of the greatest
wrestling matches of all-time!

- Davey Boy Smith was
incredibly popular in the UK.

He was arguably as big as Hulk
Hogan was in the United States.

- This man has done
so much for England.

He's exported his talents here
to the United States of America.

- Just seeing
that representation,

seeing the Bulldog,

seeing the Union Jack
flying every single week,

I can assure you, watching
that as a kid inspired me.

- He was unbelievably
talented without even trying.

- Pound for pound
and perhaps no one

who is as strong as
the British Bulldog.

- There is no bull
in this British Bulldog.

- I think it's fair to
say that Davey had issues.

And some of those issues got
in the way of his performance.

- He had developed
quite a serious problem

that nobody understood.

He just went into a
really, really dark place.

It's amazing how
fast this happened.

- Put that camera down.

- I remember seeing
him throw up,

and seeing like seven
Percocets in his throw up.

- Everyone around me thought,

"This guy's got
a drug problem,"

and I did have
a drug problem.

I couldn't get
off the morphine.

- I remember seeing
him night after night

fall down the stairs
and not know if he's alive.

- The British Bulldog
brings them to their feet.

- Look at that.

- I just wanted to
show everyone out there

that despite what
I've gone through,

and what I've lost,
that I can do a comeback

and that I think as
long as I'm breathing,

as long as I can walk,

I will put my boots
and I'll get back in the ring

and perform like I've
never performed before.

- I remember watching
Flintstones and the Jetsons

you know I see the dad with
the briefcase, and the suit on,

and have his breakfast
and go out the door.

Our dad wasn't like that.

- No.

Well, in a different way.

- He had the suitcase.

- Yes, he had the suitcase--

- He had his Halliburton--

- Yes, he had, though it didn't
have files or paperwork,

it had all his gear in there.

- A lot of people and
kids didn't believe us.

- They didn't believe us
and then they'd see our

dad pick us up like,
"Oh, my God."

Next thing you know
there would be a line up

and a swarm of kids
wanting autographs.

- Your dad was
one of the greatest.

- I know.

- He was, in my opinion,
the greatest British wrestler

to ever step foot
in the WWE ring.

- I feel like my dad put England
on the map for wrestling.

- I started amateur wrestling
when I was about 11, 12.

My cousin, the Dynamite Kid,
who was a professional

wrestler at the time,
he was the best pound

for pound wrestler in the world,
and he was the greatest.

I looked up to him
like he was a god.

Took me over to
the training camp.

I went there and
I did not like it.

I said, "This is not
my cup of tea at all."

As time went along,
I started to like it.

Then I had my first professional
match when I was 15,

so I was the youngest
professional wrestler

ever to turn pro
at the age of 15.

Announcer: He's still at school,
ladies and gentleman,

and Britain's youngest wrestler,
Dave Boy Smith at 15 years old.

[applause]

- I got to see him live
quite a lot because I used

to go to the wrestling
shows every two weeks.

Straight away Davey Boy
had an incredible skill level.

He went the same way as Dynamite
and disappeared to Calgary.

- My cousin, the Dynamite Kid,
he went over to Calgary, Canada.

Announcer: The Dynamite Kid,
a sensation from England.

- He said to the promotor,
I've got a cousin in England

who I think you should bring
over, and give him a break,

and see if he can join the
ranks of Stampede Wrestling."

Wow, here I am.

I'm 17, I'm going
to leave England

and go over to
another country, Canada.

When I got here it was like,
"Wow, these big, huge men,

monsters in the dressing
room looking at me like,

"Who's this young punk?"

- I met Davey I think in
spring of 1981, I believe,

and he was working for my dad.

Announcer:
Oh, this Smith is

going to be
a favorite around here.

- He was very much
like a little kid still,

and he was living with Dynamite,
which was not good for him.

- They were like brothers,
but he did have a nasty side.

- He often did lousy
things to Davey

and more for his own amusement.

- He would give Davey
a cup of hot chocolate,

but it was in that cup
of hot chocolate there

was a melted box of ex-lax.

- He's going, "I don't
feel very good,"

and Dynamite would tell him,
"Have some more hot chocolate,

it'll make you feel better."

- His older cousin,
who he looked up to,

he was so naive towards him.

- But Dynamite was always
a huge influence on Davey,

right from day one.

Whether it was steroids,
or whether it was pills,

and Dynamite wasn't
a guy that always

had the best
of intentions for Davey.

At the same time, he would've
told you back then that Dynamite

was his best friend, and best
guy, like a brother to him.

I called up Dynamite
and I said--

I just made up a story
that my dad didn't want him

staying at his house,

that he was more comfortable
with Davey staying at my house.

I think that saved
Davey right there.

- Bret took me under his wing,
took me like one of his brothers

and he took care of me.

He really did.

- He was starting
to become happier,

and he's starting to fit in.

I think my sister, Diana, put
her hooks into him pretty quick.

They started a relationship
maybe two or three weeks

after he got there.

- Davey came up and
walked through the front

doors of my dad's house.

My sister Diana said, "This is
the person I'm going to marry."

She literally said that
while we were eating,

she saw him and he was cute.

- It's burned in my
mind to this day.

I knew there was
something special about him.

Then we started to court,
as he put it,

behind the scenes
because we knew the rules.

I wasn't supposed to be
dating a wrestler,

and he wasn't supposed to be
dating the promoter's daughter,

and we both knew this
and we still carried on.

When love happens or
when that arrow shoots

you through your heart,
nothing can stop it.

- I'll have the groom repeat.

I, David, take you, Diana.

- I, David, take you, Diana.

- To be my lawful wedded wife.

- To be my lawful wedded wife.

I'd like to thank Stu and Helen.

- We want a rematch.

- I'd like to thank
Stu and Helen for bringing up

such a beautiful,
beautiful girl.

I'm very touched that
she married me.

- It was like
this huge celebration.

- [Indistinct]

We had hundreds of people
from all over the world.

There was newspapers from Japan
because Davey and Dynamite were

superstars over there.

- In the Calgary territory,
they went against

each other all the time.

I remember I was going to
Japan a lot in those days

with Dynamite,
and Dynamite was becoming

this phenomenon in Japan,
he was huge.

One of the biggest stars
they ever had over there.

Dynamite wasn't interested in
booking him for a long time,

and he used to go,
"He's not ready yet."

They'd known each
other all their lives,

but I think there was always
tinge of jealousy towards

Davey for just being less
uptight than Dynamite was.

Dynamite always was a guy that
had a chip on his shoulder.

Dynamite eventually
put in a word for him,

"Why don't you bring
my cousin in?"

They started teaming up in
matches as the British Bulldogs.

Dynamite and Davey
both became huge stars

over there during that time.

It was right around the time
I started in WWE.

I kept getting approached
by George Scott,

who's Vince's right-hand guy
in the booking committee,

and he kept saying,

"We want the Bulldogs.
Vince wants the Bulldogs."

Announcer: What a tremendous
tag team combination,

the British Bulldogs,

Davey Boy Smith and
the Dynamite Kid.

- Now, I can say that the
Bulldogs in those days-

- Over goes Davey Boy.

- -in 1985-

- Look at that nip
up, and nice reversal.

- -were doing things that
most tag teams could never do.

- Oh my.

- They were big stars.

They did different things,
like the A-Team.

They started getting
commercials, endorsements.

- The people at Hostess
were really clever to pick us,

the British Bulldogs,
as the spokesmen.

When you've got the munches.

- Nothing else will do.

- The Bulldogs were
one of a kind.

There was never
a team like them,

and there may never be
another team like them ever.

Really until Dynamite got hurt.

Dynamite was
at the end of his rope.

He wanted to take time off
and he wanted to go home.

He couldn't keep on
going the way he was.

His back was starting
to become a problem,

but I think they
thought we'll be home,

we'll help my dad,
help Stu out,

we'll make our big money in
Japan and we'll be good.

We don't need WWE anymore.

I think Davey was reluctant to
leave WWE in the first place,

but he did so out of
loyalty to Dynamite.

- I do remember
disagreeing with Davey on that.

Davey and I had a huge mortgage.

We were at risk of losing that.

We had a family and then
baby Georgia came along,

but Davey out of loyalty
stuck with Dynamite.

- The British Bulldogs are
coming back to Calgary

where we started from
and we're going to come back

with the biggest bang
that you've ever seen.

♪

- Davey and Dynamite
were wrestling for my dad

but the territory
was not doing well.

It was really struggling.

It was just not
a good time in Alberta,

and Dynamite's back
started to deteriorate.

When Davey told Dynamite that,
"I want to go back to WWE."

Dynamite did not want to go,
and he said you

won't make it without me.

Davey said, "Well, I have to.

I need to feed my family.

Dynamite said, "Well, if you go
you won't make it on your own."

When Davey went
back to the WWE it was

like a divorce with Dynamite
and it hurt Davey a lot

that Dynamite never
talked to him again.

I knew that Davey had something
to prove to Dynamite that he

could do this on his own.

I said we need to
give you a whole new image,

a whole new look.

I said, "What about
these braids?"

No one had seen
Davey in quite a while.

He was really big and
he looked so magnificent.

- I think Davey definitely came
back and was ready to shine.

[Davey Boy Smith's music plays]

- Davey Boy Smith back
in the World Wrestling --.

- I think it was good timing.

A year prior to Davey coming
back we began working with

Sky Sports in the
United Kingdom.

- When we did first
get Sky that's when

I noticed Davey's
popularity rising.

I used to just sit there and say

"Mom, our David's on telly.
Come out quick."

- You can bet that
everyone from all over

the world principally the UK.

They are psyched to see the
British Bulldog in action.

- Once the Brits
had their own hero,

I think that really
spurred the British fandom

on to a whole new level.

- I thought, "Man, I want
to be like the Bulldog."

- Over there he was
the number one dude.

- Monstrous standing ovation

and rightly so for the
British Bulldog.

- He was selling tickets.

When we'd make the
announcement he was coming in,

the roar that he would get,
it was goosebumps.

- There was nobody who made
more of an impact on Britain as

far as being a wrestler
than Davey Boy Smith.

There was never anybody
who got the coverage

that Davey Boy got in 1992

- The news is official.

One of the biggest events in
World Wrestling -- history,

international in scope

will be held here
at Wembley Stadium.

- It was massive news.

Everybody was talking about it.

- This summer London
plays host to the toughest,

the most flamboyant
sports event there is.

The World Wrestling --
SummerSlam is staged at

Wembley Stadium in August.

The first time it's
been held outside America.

- I talked to Vince,
"Let me work with Davey Boy,

that would be the guy."

He was in his prime and
I was in my prime and

I knew I was really
over in England.

We love Bret Hart,
but we love the Bulldog.

Which one will win?

- All of a sudden, it's Bret
against Davey because Davey's

the homeboy and Bret was the
Intercontinental Champion.

We're going to put
them together,

and not only that,

we're going to have
them be the main event.

This was so exciting.

The pressure was on
and the stress.

Davey was so excited,

but a few weeks later
he wrestles Mike Sharpe and

he does a powerslam and
something happens in his knee.

He didn't think much of it, but
it burned and hurt like crazy.

- Actually, when he
came back to Tampa,

Jim picked him up at the airport
and he was sick as hell.

He stayed at my house for a few
days just laid on the couch.

Jim got a friend, Doctor Price,
to take a look at him and Doug

got him in to see the doctor.

He had the staph infection
that was horrible

- I was rushed
back to the doctors

and he drew like 30 CCs
of this infection of my knee.

He said you got a
flesh-eating disease.

I'd come so close to losing

my leg and or
even dying, basically.

It was really scary.

- I thought, "How is he
going to do this match?"

Nearly five years old
wondering that.

- We got to England and
he was taking antibiotics,

pretty strong ones
three times a day

and I was just so nervous
that nothing can go wrong.

[fans cheer]

- The British Bulldog's going to
win whether he wants to or not.

[crowd chants "Bulldog"]

- As I remember,
we drove up that day

to Wembley and you could see
lines of cars weaving there

round and round
to the stadium.

You got a sense of the grandeur
and the size of what this is.

Once you walked
inside the stadium,

I think I was about row 50.

It was dramatic.

[crowd cheers]

- Over 80,000 fans welcome you
to the grandeur of SummerSlam.

- Well, you can certainly feel
the nervous tension amongst

this crowd of 80,000 plus
as we await the battle for the

Intercontinental Championship.

♪

- I had seen Davey and Bret
wrestle each other in Calgary.

I knew what
they were capable of,

but there was a lot of
anxiety certainly on my part.

I was just so
concerned that Davey's

going to blow out his knee.

- Here we go.

- If you didn't know Davey had
all the problems that he had,

you'd never think about it when
you watch that match back.

It was a great match.

It's one of my greatest
matches of my career for sure.

- Right back at him.

Leapfrog by the British Bulldog,
trying to hook him.

Yes, nice maneuver.

Bret Hart down.

Look at this.

My goodness.

- Ever since that day,
it has been my favorite

wrestling match in history.

To see them two go out
and into the ring and execute

a match that was almost
flawless speaks to the in-ring

proficiency of the two guys.

- Six, seven, eight.

Whoa.

What a suplex.

From the top rope.

I think we've seen
just about every wrestling

move there is to see thus far.

Oh, yes the sharpshooter applied

It's all over.

- Nobody's ever
gotten out of this.

- Imagine the pain
the British Bulldog is in.

Oh, God.

Yes and yes, he saves himself.

Sunset flip.

[crowd cheers]

[bell rings]

- As soon as Davey pins him
and gets the three,

everybody just shoots up.

Everybody shoots up and I've
never seen anything like that.

- If you watch that back
now and you watch that finish,

that one, two, three.

Boom.

It's like there's an
electric shock in the chair of

everybody in the stadium.

Everybody is on their feet
when he finally wins the title.

♪

- When I think it was
Howard Finkel who finally

made the announcement.

- The winner of this bout and
new Intercontinental Champion,

The British Bulldog.

- It was just--

I'm still feeling
the goosebumps right now.

- I can't believe it.

One of the greatest
wrestling matches of all time

has just taken place.

- It was one of the greatest
experiences of my life.

- He did it in his own backyard.

- It was really
such an incredible--

I have never really come back
down to earth from that.

I have never really come back
down to earth from that.

- It was really, maybe, five,
six weeks after the match

at Wembley that his career
came to a dead stop again.

- SummerSlam '92 was one of my
favorite experiences in my life.

It was just unforgettable,

but a couple of months
after SummerSlam Davey left.

- I remember Vince
called me on the phone,

and Vince said, "I just wanted
to let you know first

that we're probably going
to have to let Davey go."

He was getting growth hormone
through some dealer, in England.

It was I think
just poor choices.

- That was hard for us because
we were still on this high from

being at SummerSlam.

Davey went onto WCW,
but he just missed everybody.

He just wanted to
be with his family,

literally, with Bret and Owen,

and my brother-in-law
Jim Neidhart also.

He went back again, in '94.

- When he came back, he was no
longer on any enhancement drugs,

and he looked great,
he worked great.

He got cleaned up,
and that was the real

Davey for a while there.

I think Davey
was happy times for him.

I think for all of us,
it was a happy time.

The Hart Foundation
stands united.

It was a good time in the world,

and we were happy were,
to be where we

and we were all doing
pretty well for ourselves.

I think Davey
was in a good place.

The life on the road, being
around me and Owen,

it was fun for him.

- I'll drive.

- You'll drive?

- You'll kill him.

[Yelling]

[Laughs]

- More?

- Really, it was a great memory
when I think back on it.

- Only on Monday Night Raw.

The British Bulldog
catches a shark.

Yes, 25 feet.

[laughter]

- That's it.

- The guy that I saw
was a dude who just wanted

to have a good match
and then have fun.

- Did Davey Boy Smith
like to have fun?

I think that's an
understatement.

Davey Boy Smith was the fun.

- At the Fatal Four.

No, I wasn't supposed to say it,
you were supposed to.

I was supposed to
at Ground Zero.

- I think he had the most fun
with my brother, Owen.

They were tag teaming
and just having a blast.

- Something for
Larry Rosen here.

- You can't get
higher than this,

and we're at the top
of Cape Town.

[chuckles]

- Don't worry about him.

- He's always smiling.

You never really seen
Davey in a bad mood.

Such a funny guy.

- He was just like a big kid.

He was like
everybody's best friend.

He was so funny,

he was like the uncle
that was so light-hearted,

and he just wanted to have fun.

- All right.

Yeaaahhh.

- My dad and I
were really, really close.

We had a really big connection
and a strong bond.

- There's me in action.

- Good, Georgia.

- He was my best friend.

- Georgia is me, operating me.

- My dad was hilarious.

Look, you made me laugh,
stop it.

My mom was more of the
disciplinary, the strict parent.

My dad was just always like fun.

- We used to go
jet skiing, swimming.

He was super strong.

He could pick me up,
press slam me into the pool.

It was always fun
traveling with Davey.

It was cool because I got to go
down and see him wrestle live.

- The atmosphere is
absolutely off the page.

- Being there, live, at the
Canadian Stampede, aside from

Wembley Stadium, that's my
favorite wrestling moment.

- This was like the pinnacle,
maybe the greatest moment of

triumph to come back
to our hometown.

It was like a magical time.

- There's a celebration
for the entire Hart family

and the Hart Foundation.

- It was like the
pinnacle of success,

and then right after that,

it was like everything
just went completely in the

opposite direction like
a train going out of control.

[crowd cheers]

- It was like a magical time.

Everybody was so happy
to be in Calgary.

We were the heroes at home.

Maybe the peak of our career.

It probably was considering all
the bad stuff that would happen

down the road
in the next year or two.

After that,
the screw job happened.

After I signed with
the other company,

Vince called me the
next day and said,

'Well, we're going to do
that thing where you

drop the belt to Shawn,
"and I said,

"Well, I've already told you
that's not going to happen."

I said, "I offered to drop the
belt to him, and he told me

basically to go to hell.

I will never do that for him if
he would never do that for me."

Vince finally, the day
of the show, said,

"We'll do it your way,"

but what he actually did
was set me up and

went out there and screwed me
in the middle of the ring.

Referee: Ring the bell.

Ring the bell.

[bell rings]

- Well, then I walked down
to the ring and I asked Bret,

I said, "What went wrong?"

Bret said, "I've been screwed."

I just went home,
and I was thinking about things.

There was no intention
of me leaving the WWE.

I got a good career in the WWE,
I was European Champion,

I was Tag Team Champion
with Owen,

I was on top of the world,

I just wanted to make a stand
because it was family.

- I feel again like
what he did with Dynamite,

he just said, "I feel like I
have to stick with Bret on this,

and I need to go join Bret."

- I don't want to be fallacious
and blame everything on the

Montréal screw job,
but I think that

that was a big reason
for why everything happened.

Davey was having his
issues at the time.

- I think Davey had got to where
he was addicted to his drugs.

It was one of those things,
it was a prescription drug,

downers, and pain pills,
and muscle relaxers,

and that kind of stuff.

- Well, so I think that's
probably one of the reasons

we hung out.

Some of the times,
he would follow us to the car

because we were sort of
like-minded in that respect.

Look, at the time,
it was our normal.

I think all of us start
from the pain aspect of it,

and then it just becomes
what you do.

- Four tears in my right knee.

I need surgery.

Right now, I need surgery on it,
but I put a knee brace on to use

as kind of like a crutch,
to keep myself going and

in the wrestling business.

Along with my back, I've got two
herniated disks in my back,

and I've got a neck that's
totally ruined.

- It was catching up to him,
but it wasn't pressure from the

industry as much as he was
comparing what he was that day

of Wembley Stadium,
SummerSlam '92,

and when you're starting
to get broken down,

"How can I
be what I was?"

It's like, "I'll take
pain killers,

and that'll get me through,

but it became a nightmare
that revisited Davey

a couple of times.

Well, more than
a couple of times.

Unfortunately,
it became a problem.

- What are you doing?

- Just filming you so you know
what you look like when you're

like the way you are.

- Davey had left WWE.

He's quit and he's going
to WCW, and he's already

having drug issues.

- I think it's fair and still
respectful to say that Davey

wasn't at his best
when he came back.

Davey had issues,
and some of those issues got

in the way of his performance.

Referee: One, two, three.

[bell rings]

- The biggest issue
that I had to deal with,

when it came to
drug abuse in WCW,

wasn't the illegal drugs.

It wasn't cocaine,
it wasn't heroin.

it wasn't even pot,

it was prescription drugs.

You get to a point when you've
got an independent contractor

who has a doctor's prescription.

How much influence can you
possibly have over that

individual and what he
or she decides to take,

from their doctor?

The abuse was obvious,
but most of the guys

had scripts for the
drugs that they were abusing.

- You could see that
he was deteriorating a bit,

as a performer,
he was getting a lot of injuries

Then, I remember at
Fall Brawl in 1998.

- That was the first match,
I was a tag team

match with Jim Neidhart,

and I didn't know
there was a trap door.

I went in the ring,
I hit my back.

I was like, "Oh, my God.

I felt my life go out of me.

I almost messed myself
to tell you the truth."

I came back
to the dressing room,

and I said, "That ring
is really hard.

There's something
wrong with it."

They said, "Well, you get to
watch out for the trap door.

I asked what trap door

and I thought they
were joking with me.

I stayed around for the rest of
the night and

then out pops the Ultimate
Warrior through this trap door.

It was such a secret that the
Ultimate Warrior was there

that no one knew that
there was someone coming

out of the trap door.

That's when it all started.

I endured it for a
couple of weeks

and then I went to the doctor

and they put me on painkillers

and then they weren't working.

Then they put me on morphine

because I wanted
to keep working.

Everyone around me thought
this guy has a drug problem.

Everyone around me thought
this guy has a drug problem.

The British Bulldog has been in
wrestling for 20 years

since I was 15 years old.

Alex Wright, do you think you
can beat the British Bulldog?

You're wrong.

You want a chance at me?

Come on and take a piece of me.

I did have a drug problem.

I couldn't get off the morphine.

- When he got addicted
to the morphine,

it happened quickly,
and it was to compensate

for this excruciating
pain in his back.

Then his sister Tracy died.

She was his sister
that walked him down

to the ring a year before.

She died of cancer.

I think that
he was using morphine

to help him to cope with that.

Davey just seemed to be
lifeless, like a vegetable.

You're hooked on pills.

Every night you're like this.

Every single night that I am
with you you're like this.

You really worry me.

- I checked into a rehab in
Grande Prairie and

I went into a 28-day program
to clean my system out.

Two days after getting to rehab
I get a call from my sister that

you better come home,
your mom's sick.

I flew out Thursday, got there
Friday, my mom died Saturday.

We buried her,
but I'm carrying

her casket as a pallbearer,
I almost fall on the floor.

My back gave in,
but I got back to Calgary again

and did extensive
tests on my back

and they said
you got a fractured spine

and you got a staph infection
that's eating your spine away.

They're scared I'm going
to get one of my nerves inside

the little split there and if it
closes it'll snap my nerves

and I'll be a paraplegic.

I asked the doctor today,
I asked the specialist,

I said what about wrestling

and he said absolutely not.

All I know and all I've ever
done all my life.

Now, all of a sudden,
I've got to find a new job

and then Diana
came to the hospital

and gave me a
Federal Express envelope.

I said, "What is it?"

She said, "Read it."

It was my termination from WCW.

- "I don't know
what I'm going to do now.

My back's done,
we're running out of money."

You think it's
never going to happen.

Owen came by a lot to cheer him
up and that's when Owen put the

phone in Davey's room and
Owen said, "I'm really happy.

Love to have you come back and
maybe we can do something.

I don't know, you can be a
manager or something.

I'm going to get
you and Vince talking."

- He was the first
person to call me.

He said, "How's it going?"

I said, "I'm doing all right."

He said, "Is there any chance
you'll ever come back?"

I said, "I don't know."

I said, "Right now
it doesn't look too good."

He said, "Well, if there is,
I would like you to come back

to finish your career
here in the World Wrestling --."

- Vince McMahon
welcomed Davey back

and no one was really sure
in what capacity

because he's
still in the hospital.

It was like 10 days later
Owen died.

- My phone rang and
all I heard was Diana

screaming on the phone,
"He's dead.

He's dead."

Owen was one of a kind.

One of my best friends
in the business inside

and outside of the ring.

- To lose Owen and you start
to question your longevity

in professional wrestling.

He was just determined
to get back in the ring, though.

He was determined
and he fought hard for that.

- My son has been
a big help to me.

We trained together.

He told me he said, "Daddy, I
don't want to see you quit."

He said, "You're too young.

You're too good to quit."

He said, " You've got to get
back in the ring again."

I said, "I'll do it, Harry."

- He was motivated
to go back to WWE

and work back
in September of '99.

Michael Cole:
The British Bulldog is back.

Jerry Lawler:
I can't believe it.

It was the last man I expected.

I thought he was
in a hospital bed somewhere.

- He had all that bad stuff
happen to him and I thought,

"This is finally
our time to enjoy this.

This is going
to be a good run for you

and this is going
to be your last run

so you're going
to make it count.

You're going
to become World Champion."

Jerry Lawler:
Well, he just proved

there's a lot of fight
in that Dog.

- I always knew that.

- He was still giving it
his all in that first

and then he just started
slipping again.

- WWE had put Davey
in a rehab and

he checked himself out
and came home.

I was like,
"You can't be home, Davey.

You need to be in the rehab."

He's like, "No."

We started fighting
so I said, "Well, I'm leaving."

I honest to God thought
that me leaving that

that was going
to shake him up to say

I'm going to get my act
together, but he didn't.

I'm going to get my act
together, but he didn't.

- It was getting bad,
and I remember seeing him

throw up and seeing
seven Percocets in his throw-up.

I remember seeing him night
after night fall down the stairs

and not know if he's alive.

Him falling on his head.

This was happening a lot.

Him and my mom weren't getting
along and they were divorced.

- I don't know if it's just me,
but I think a part of all of us

where could justify
it to a degree of like,

"Well, he is in pain.

This is why
he is taking these pills

because he has to."

- I didn't really have any
contact with him for months.

I was just disappointed
because I felt like

he chose that life over us.

Then I think he was coming
away from that and was like,

"This is not what I want."

- I honestly think that
he just had hit rock bottom.

He really, really had.

I don't even know
where he was living.

He didn't have a car

and he just didn't have
any roots anymore.

He was coming back.

He was really, really trying
to work things out with me

and with Harry and Georgia.

- I had started to hear
and believe

that he was
getting his act together.

I know Harry was a big
sort of light in his life

and gave him hope.

- He was promoting that he was
going to come back to wrestling

and he was excited.

Sort of said

that he had fallen off
the face of the earth for while,

but he was looking to
come back and work with me

- It was cool
to be with Davey.

He seemed to be in good spirits.

I think that he was happy
to be back wrestling.

It was good experience
that he was out with me.

We were traveling a bit.

- For anybody that
was sort of a witness to it

or who were around

it thought that that was a
really meaningful and

positive thing for Davey
that gave him some hope

and gave him something
to look forward to.

[bell rings]

- They had done a
match with Harry in Winnipeg,

and they had
come up for Sunday dinner.

Everybody was like,
"Davey's back."

We're all sitting
at the dinner table with him

and he had this huge
sigh of relief

that he was back
where he belonged.

Then it was like
literally a week later

that I got the phone call.

- Tributes are being
paid today to the

World Wrestling superstar
Davey Boy Smith

who died suddenly
at the weekend.

- They just said that he died
from heart failure.

It's just hard to accept it.

I know he's gone.

It's just hard to accept that.

I just want us all to remember

that there was more to
Davey than trouble

and the problems
that he had

in the last few years.

I know Harry and Georgia will
remember him as a good father.

- I miss him so much.

To me, he was my best friend.

I'm so mad at God
for taking him away,

but I know they needed him there

I just wish that I had had
more time with him.

- It was a shock to me.

I think I've always felt that I
wished I could have done more.

- There was just
so much unfinished business

that was so close
to being done but wasn't.

It was a really rotten
way everything unfolded.

It just wasn't meant to be.

Harry and Georgia
picked up the pieces.

I think Davey would be
so proud of them

if he saw how devoted they are.

- I feel honored to be able to
carry on my father's legacy.

- The resemblance is eerie,
isn't it?

- Davey's legacy
now continues on

with to be inducted
in the Hall of Fame.

- The British Bulldog.

- I wish Davey was here

because this would
have meant so much to him.

The star that
shines the brightest

is the star that
burns out the fastest.

He left us a little soon
but what a legacy.

and then there never will be.

- Personally, he was a guy
that just enjoyed himself,

was always pleasant to be around
always in a good mood.

- He was truly
loved by everybody.

That says a lot about Davey,
how many people loved him

and really appreciated him.

- He was a really good dad.

No matter what,
I feel like he's always with me.

- He'd give you
the last pound in his pocket

just to put a smile
on that person's face.

- Mom, dad, Tracy, Joanne,
I love you.

I love England.

- He put his heart, his body,
his mind, his emotions.

It was all because
he loved what he did.
