has been organised around
a centre of power.

The guarantees of rule of law
have been sidelined,

the terms of political competition
have changed.

Removing the government
is legally possible,

but few believe it likely.

I accepted this assignment

as I fervently love Hungary,

to grant a pardon

that caused confusion
and disturbed many.

Understandably,
they expect an explanation.

Last April,
I granted the pardon believing

the convict had not abused the vulnerability
of the children in his care.

I was wrong.

Because granting the pardon
and its lack of justification

were likely to raise doubts
about zero tolerance

for paedophilia.

I am resigning from the office
of President of the Republic.

I am grateful for having been able
to serve the Hungarian nation.

was granted
in connection with your case?

I did not write the request.

about the pardon
was published on 2 February.

It quickly became apparent
that something was very wrong.

The so-called pardon scandal,

when a paedophile's accomplice

was pardoned by the President.

Everyone felt
the story was incomplete.

Meaning, it did not end with her.

According to sources, at the intercession
of Reformed Bishop Zoltán Balog,

she pardoned the deputy head

complicit in the crimes
at the Bicske orphanage.

It causes a gigantic scandal.

Zoltán Balog was widely considered

to be Katalin Novák's mentor.

If he was the accountable
within the System of National Cooperation,

the SNC NER structure,
then he should be held responsible.

But in the case of the pardon,

we saw that since Katalin Novák signed it,
she had to resign.

Judit Varga, as Minister of Justice,
countersigned it, so had to resign.

She has to leave,
her political career's over.

Did all this imply
the political message

that the logic of the SNC NER
no longer applies?

Wouldn't the system protect me?

We don't know
who persuaded Mr Balog.

There are all kinds of rumours

and many theories about
why the buck stopped

at Mr Balog.

I have no idea
how many people heard the rumours

that Anikó Lévai,
Viktor Orbán's wife,

is friends with Endre Kónya,

the man convicted in this case
who received a pardon,

that they may have
mutual acquaintances.

It was my decision, so it is irrelevant

who suggested, pressured me or not

to do so.

For my decision, I take responsibility.

Orbán announced

the amendment to the fundamental law
regarding clemency decisions.

Isn't that odd?

If it wasn't for a young man

who turned the entire case upside down,

the scandal
would have died down quickly,

or we wouldn't remember it at all.

In 2018,
our family moved back from Brussels,

and Judit immediately became
a state secretary, then a minister,

hence a key figure in the government.

She was even rumoured to be
a potential successor to the Prime Minister.

I think we played a huge role
in her rising to prominence.

She was clearly the perfect fit

as a young, multilingual mother of three,
playing sports and music,

being open, smiley and positive.

Her popularity and fame grew,

but then came slanders with things
she had nothing to do with.

That's when rifts appeared in our marriage,
as I couldn't stand these slurs.

That is, take a completely honest person
who only wants to work for her country,

sacrificing from her life
and our children's lives,

and she's thrown under the bus.

Basically I tried to support her,

but it quickly became clear
she didn't see it that way.

Later, she acknowledged
that my managing her Facebook page

and giving her political advice,
wasn't what she needed.

But rather to sit with her
after a hard day of work,

holding hands
talking, watching a movie together.

Only in hindsight
do I really understand her.

We were supposed to divorce,

but to their great surprise,
we patched it up and moved in together.

But, I could only stop interfering

in public affairs and her work
for about a month.

After the divorce, I was quite isolated,
since they felt it was time

to get rid of this troublemaker

who interfered
in their nice little conversations

about who would get
TV2 channel's advertising time,

or which company could be used
to get more commissions

and rake in some money.

Clearly,
I wasn't the darling of the group.

But I always knew
that as long as she held her post,

I would never publicly criticize her,

nor the system itself for that matter.

UNFIT PRESIDENT!
SHE HAS TO RESIGN!

The outbreak of the pardon scandal
took a week.

When the news first came out,
I read it,

met Judit because of the children,
or we texted each other,

and I wrote her,
listen, this is the end.

Your position as minister
and this whole story ends here.

Then Judit got a call
telling her to resign,

and forbidding her or anyone
from speaking out,

and that repulsive article
by that vile Zsolt Bayer,

appeared on the front page
of the daily, Magyar Nemzet ,

in which he pins
all the responsibility on her,

but lets the Antal Rogáns
and the like rob half the country

laughing while others
take the blame for them,

that's not okay.

I am almost certain
that the first spark for Péter Magyar

was seeing the system destroy
the mother of his children.

In fact, I think this is
what started it all.

I think it was a Saturday.

I was lying on the bed,
I recall the children weren't with me,

I had handed them over to Judit.

I wrote the whole thing down,
I posted it, then deleted it,

and finally reposted it.

I went out to the garden
and returned a few minutes later

to delete it again.

Because even then
I felt some kind of loyalty,

and worry for Judit and the family.

But it had so many shares,
and I think Telex reposted it soon after,

so I realised there was no point
in taking it down,

the die has been cast.

I was single at that time.

I came home

and it was a pretty tough
one or two weeks.

Then...

you wake up the next day.

The interview went viral,

it quickly reached
over two million viewers.

It was like a sci-fi,
waking up in a very different reality

Hungarian public holiday.

I got a call asking
where I was going on Friday.

I said to the Péter Magyar protest,
as I'd read the guy had said

a protest would take place.

So I was asked not only to come,
but to organize it too.

It was incredibly stressful
to put together.

The main organizer pulled out.
Ervin tried finding someone.

People didn't commit or cancelled,
so two days before we really had nothing.

The first thing I remember
telling him was

that you have to do more
than give a good speech,

you also have to show
the impact people can have.

Then he asked me if I would help with that.
I said yes.

I knew right away

we would collaborate
for about a week and a half

if I communicated and worked
like I used to.

So I had to leave my ego in my hometown

and focus on one thing:

how I could help him.

I didn't want to go on stage,

I had to be pushed.

It was my turn.

I told my mum I'm going home,
not going up.

I was anxious
there would be a poor turnout.

So someone sent me a photo of the crowd
and you couldn't see the end

with half an hour to go.

It was astounding.

I could also hear
the power of the crowd,

a sea of voices and emotions.

Then I went on stage
and said hello.

We're not afraid!

I saw some faces,
I still remember them.

Looking down

I saw the parents of my sons' peers,
along with their kids smiling at me.

It was really touching.

Our country has become the second poorest
and the most corrupt EU member.

Soon the entire Hungarian nation
might declare,

we must build a new homeland

where it doesn't matter
conservative or liberal,

religious or atheist,

married or single,

poor or rich,

but that we are all Hungarians
who love our homeland.

We will build a new homeland
brick by brick,

a modern European country

where it is good to be born,
to live and to raise children.

I came down from the stage,
said "Phew,"

and decided to do something

I've been doing since,
going straight out into the crowd.

Like a rock star,
people loved the vibe around him.

I knew there would be
a press conference nearby

where we used to live
and our first son was born.

with some minor differences,

and that's fine.

a very similar vision of the world.

The Head of Cabinet and others
had themselves removed from the files,

made public this morning

before entering
Budapest's Chief Prosecutor's Office

to hand over the very same recording.

to exactly when that was.

It was at the beginning of 2023.

and the Head of Cabinet,

with Judit on his other side.

Head of Cabinet Antal Rogán,
said some brutally crass things.

Had I recorded that conversation,

the Parliament would now be in flames.

He gave the tape
to the Prosecutor's Office

and sent me a message asking
when we should protest.

I said today.

I saw him leaving the office
announcing

there'd be a protest that evening at 6 p.m.

We'll meet at 6 p.m.
with all Hungarians of good will.

I checked the time,
we had four hours to organise it.

We're headed there
and Péter's brother told us

that only a few hundred people
were around.

We realized it was a gamble
we shouldn't have risked.

I got out of the car,
looked at the crowd

and there were
tens of thousands of people.

They had filled the square
in a few minutes.

Torches, trucks, flags...

The only thing I said
from Ervin's truck

was the announcement.

in front of Parliament.

a huge protest, at Parliament,

It was surreal.

There were some middle-aged people
said to be

the members of the
Party of Respect and Freedom Tisza .

That's when it hit me,
this party could be taken over.

There was the head of the Tisza party.

Then Péter took charge of the minutes

and the whole party.

He came up with his big smile
and wished me well as vice president.

I was like, I told you I'm not
a party member or anything.

In no time he had made us
vice presidents.

And added that by 4 p.m.

the party had to be registered
for the European Parliament elections.

It was noon
and we were in the countryside.

We had to rush back to Budapest.

Our lawyer was with us
and told us to hold on,

we'd have to submit a lot of things.

We didn't have a logo
and rushed to make one.

It went like that back then.

This information cannot be leaked.

It was crucial Fidesz didn't know
before we went to the Election Office,

to avoid them
blackmailing or threatening us.

Péter said there is one task,

they cannot know we are the
Party of Respect and Freedom,

otherwise they'll ban us.

It's a great story,
one of the best in our history.

How do we get home?
We went separately.

I stayed for a few more minutes
then set off in my car.

Our lawyer calls me
on their way to the Election Office

to submit the application.

Everything's going smoothly.
At 3:50 p.m. the lawyer confirms

everything was submitted
and under the radar.

I'm over the moon to have overcome
one of the biggest hurdles.

I get back to the office at 3:55 p.m.
and see the others deathly pale.

We're in trouble.

I got back and got a call.

We're in all the headlines.

I checked all the media -
everything you could think of,

and it was out
that Tisza is Magyar's party.

But how could this happen?

I went to vote on my own,

They said we might get
six or seven mandates.

I'd have been satisfied
with four or five.

I said the results didn't matter,
I'd be content no matter what.

But I was also hoping for a miracle.

Around 7:30 or 7:45,
a political analyst

texted me

that there's panic
at Fidesz's result centre.

I knew right away
that Fidesz had its worst results

since we joined the EU
and held EP elections.

But I went through all the details
the next day, and saw

that we had achievied great success
in all the prefectural seats,

and towns
of ten or twenty thousand people.

Orbán's trick was

to narrow the opposition's field

and reduce the number of people
who could participate,

by reducing the size of parliament

and by making
the MPs' salaries competitive.

This created a status quo

in which it was comfortable

to be an opposition MP.

The opposition is not playing
to win.

Fidesz's opposition was getting dumber,

they got used to this lacklustre state,

in which Fidesz had led them.

I am always amazed
when I hear politicians

from the previous
parliamentary opposition

blaming the Tisza Party

for their own party's failure

and saying if it weren't for Tisza,

they would have done well
in the 2024 EP elections.

No, in fact, the cause-and-effect
is reversed,

there would have been no Tisza

if voters critical of the government
had felt confident in the opposition.

When Péter Magyar showed up,

one of his innovations was

to give this opposition milieu

a coherent narrative,

that is,

what Viktor Orbán is saying is false.

Then I went behind Balázs Orbán and said,
"You should be ashamed of yourself."

I think he is
one of the few Hungarian politicians

who understands and has understood

what it means.

What Fidesz has long avoided,

especially the Prime Minister,
is to have someone on their level.

He has always avoided meetings
with opposition leaders.

His people prevented anyone
from approaching,

no one could jump next to him.

There are historical turning points

when we can decide
to step out of the rut

we have been stuck in

or stay in it.

Some kind of pain lingers in Hungary.

All of our historical experiences
add up to,

where we try to take control of things,

we usually fail.

Hungarians find it hard to pinpoint

the glorious days of their history.

We all have our strengths.

We all do.

It's difficult to make people believe

that they can make a difference.

You need someone who can realise

that a moment is historical.

The side which always thought
it was the minority

now senses that it is the majority.

A BETTER FUTURE IS BUILT,
IT DOESN'T JUST HAPPEN!

We express our opinion

and we stand by it.

There is more to this country
and its people

than what we are able to show.

That's why I talk about cooperation,

and that we should rather seek
what unites us.

It always make me said to hear

that someone doesn't like
being Hungarian,

that this country's like this or that,

and that's not good.

It's not necessarily their fault,
they might feel

that they weren't given or helped enough
by their country,

but our country
should be shaped in a way

so everyone can feel proud
of being Hungarian,

regardless of where they live.

Unnecessary disputes and name-calling,

treason accusations,
labelling each other

undermine all of this.

It is okay to criticize, very much so,

but you cannot question the basics,
someone's identity,

that is not acceptable.

It's like
immediately disqualifying someone.

In fact, Péter Magyar
is the symbol of his own community.

The majority behind him
do not glorify him,

but want a change of regime.

I think the difference is huge.

Dear commemorating compatriots,

The spirit of 1956

was reborn in 1989 on this square,

when a young man

stood on those museum stairs

and announced our joint hope.

He said:

"If we believe..."

...in our strength,

we will be able to end
the communist dictatorship.

If we are determined enough,
we can force the ruling party

to undergo free and fair elections,

if we don't ignore the ideals of 1956,

we will elect a government

that will start negotiations
to withdraw Russian troops

immediately.

That young man was Viktor Orbán.

THIS IS THE END

We must and we want to remove systems

that don't work,

we have the responsibility to do so.

We ought not look for a father figure
to lead,

but rather someone,

who will make our dreams come true.

There is no third option,

and the thing is

that in the past 15 years,
there has been no third option.

It's clear what's at stake
in this election,

and every voter
has to step up to the plate.

Today we're not people from Fidesz
or from Tisza.

Not from the left or from the right.

Today we are Hungarians.

Freedom is born when we no longer fear,

and today we are no longer afraid.

We do not fear speaking the truth,

standing together,

confronting the evil
of a trembling regime.

Today we are no longer afraid.

We have the faith, the knowledge
and the will.

Hungarians needed to find someone,

who unites these three values,

and openly confronts Viktor Orbán.

At least once in our lifetime
we stand

at the abyss,

on the brink of freedom.

Ever since the pardon scandal broke,

we, Hungarians,
are in a state of clemency.

Our personality or our characteristics

are way less important
than the fate of our country.

We can rewire our heart and brain,

and improve in this moment of clemency.

I will also weep.

There's no such thing as
a leftist or a rightist.

We are all human beings,

and all the highlighted differences

are non-existent.

At moments, we feel...

we are not condemned to this,

and we might also experience

that we can contribute
in every small way.

A generation has grown up

that feels responsible for society.

If someone attributes
too much power to a political leader

in their life,

it also means

that they shift the responsibility
to someone else.

We shape our own destiny.

It is important to recognize this.

I wrote many depressing
articles and books in the past

where I wrote off Hungarian society,

and to my personal delight

I admit that I was wrong.

The main thing is
that after the elections

we will still have to live together,

and should not let the hatred
which was forced on us

and endlessly holds power over us

get within us

and stop us

from living together in harmony.
