(Glory of Special Forces)

(This series is Shanghai's major literary and artistic project)

(Episode 14)

Didn't you come to me to talk about him?

He has recovered from PTSD.

The whole company witnessed it today.

I sent him there.

Throwing such a brat to you,

he must've given you a lot of trouble.

He's a diamond in the rough. He's worth it.

He's one-track minded.

Just like me back then.

I wanted to join Cheetah too.

I participated twice and got eliminated twice.

I hope

he can be

the lucky one.

The one with talent

should have good luck.

Goodbye, sir.

Get in.

What are you waiting for?

Get in. Come with me to the sentry post.

Yes, sir.

Company One's sentry post is at the top.

Have you been there before?

-No, sir. -Right. You're with Special Service.

There is no reason for you to visit Company One's post.

Let's go. We have a long way to go.

Sir,

what's inside your briefcase?

It's bulging.

Open it and see for yourself.

You're bringing so many notebooks to the post.

Take it out and have a look.

I write down notes as I go.

These notebooks

are full of names and family situation of frontline soldiers of each company.

I receive emails from everyone

on the local area network.

They would tell me

even private matters like blind date.

Out of 365 days a year,

I spend 200 days visiting various posts.

They all laugh at me,

jokingly called me Regiment Commander of Wheel.

Only through zero-distance contact with the soldiers,

can I understand the real situation beyond papers,

so that I can guide the field better,

to mentor and solve the problems of the grassroots organization.

In a word,

we must keep our comrades in mind.

Yes, sir.

You train hard every night.

Why?

I want to stay in good shape,

and wait for the chance to participate in the selection.

You were in an actual battle.

What do you want to do most in the battle?

I want to destroy the enemy

and fulfil my duty as a soldier.

That's all?

That's all.

Killing an enemy and saving a comrade,

of these two,

which matters more to you?

My comrades are capable of protecting themselves.

If they are injured, we have medic.

It's too kind to call you one-track minded.

You brat, you only think of yourself.

Sir,

I'm just being honest with you.

Yan Po Yue,

I've approved you to participate in the selection.

Really?

No.

You're too wild.

I have to leave you in the hands of someone more capable.

Yes, sir!

Thank you, sir!

When you get there,

maybe you can really find your

original aspiration of being a soldier.

Regiment Commander!

You brats.

How's the food today?

It's great. Stay for dinner, sir.

Sir, the solar water heater has been installed.

Have a shower first.

Okay.

I'll stay for dinner today.

Give me my bottle.

You don't have to stay here with me.

Go back with the car.

Sir...

Go back.

Before you go,

there are many people you need to say goodbye to, got it?

Comrades,

I'm a recruit of Squad One of

Rapid Deployment Brigade's Special Service, Yan Po Yue.

I just received an order from my superiors

to continue guarding Hill 713.

Your honour and glory

will remain on the field.

We will hold on to it.

We won't let the enemy seize even an inch of our land!

Regiment Commander has released you?

You knew that already?

He just approved it yesterday.

I'm leaving too.

Where are you going?

The military academy. For postgraduate study.

For three years.

In the future,

a better me will meet a better you.

I will continue to strive to be the best.

I heard you. I'll be waiting.

Sir, I want to give you a gift.

I really didn't have many options.

So this is what I look like in your eyes.

No, you're much more handsome than it.

You punk.

You finally did it.

Your efforts paid off.

Let me tell you,

The suffering days are ahead of you.

What? Want to fight me?

Those are not suffering days, it's sweet days.

You brat.

Have you visited other guys?

I have. Guo, Tian,

Sha, Long, I've bidden them farewell.

It suits you.

Is it?

Have you talked to Company Commander?

I'm going to see him now.

Go now! He's leaving too.

I thought I would have more time.

I didn't know it would come so fast.

Throwing a farewell party isn't too much, is it?

I didn't even go to the headquarters' farewell party.

At least have a meal with us then.

Bid everyone farewell.

I've said all I have to say.

Li, what do you want then?

A simple goodbye will suffice.

Any other requests? The company will try to meet them.

If it's beyond our company's means,

I'll make a request to the regiment.

No request.

Oh, right,

I do have one.

My train is at 5am tomorrow.

I'll leave alone, I don't want anyone to see me off.

You're making this difficult for me.

From a personal perspective,

we've been working together for over two years.

From the work perspective, I'm Instructor.

When we have new recruits, we hold welcome party for them.

Now that a veteran is leaving, there won't be any farewell party?

Not to mention that you're a company commander.

You won't even meet

my last request.

Why?

After I'm gone,

there will be a new company commander coming in.

They need to forget me as soon as possible

to adapt to the new environment.

I don't wish to put other people to any inconvenience.

Salute!

Please say something, sir!

This isn't a memorial service.

No need to be so serious.

Today

is my last day as company commander.

Having a company commander like me,

you all must've suffered a lot.

We serve the people!

I am the ninth commander of Special Service Company.

After I'm gone,

soon you'll have your tenth company commander.

I hope you...

I hope you will

continue to train hard under the leadership

of the new company commander,

maintain the prosperity and stability of our country

and safeguard the security of our land.

Comrades

who are not here today

are on duty on the frontline.

Please send them my regards.

I wish them good health and success in their work.

And I hope all comrades

will return

safe and sound

from your future missions.

When I was in the hall of honour just now,

I saw pennants,

awards,

military medals.

If

I can come back one day,

when I come back,

I hope to see more of them.

Stop crying.

Listen to me, Zhang Tian Yang,

You have wounds.

remember to protect yourself

during training.

Yes, sir!

Xiao Yun Jie!

Yes, sir!

Remember my strictness,

not my perversions.

Gao Zhun.

Yes, sir!

Eat well and build your strength.

Grow bigger.

Zhou Zi Jian.

Yes, sir!

Keep in mind that

when you put on the uniform, we become comrades in arms.

We are a family.

Unity is above all.

We have only one common goal,

to defeat the enemy.

Yes, sir!

(Excellent Military Skill, Fine Conduct) (Number One)

(Joint Effort In Capture of Drug Dealers)

(Model Company For Grassroots Construction)

Comrades,

comrade Xiao Fei will represent Company One

in the special forces selection.

Today,

instead of wine, we'll toast with beverages.

Let's wish Squad Leader Xiao a good luck in this selection.

May he bring honour to our company, bring glory to our regiment.

Yes, sir!

Xiao Fei, say something.

I'm ashamed to say,

I've participated in the selection three times

since I joined the army,

and I got eliminated every time.

But this time,

I'm well prepared.

I'll get good results,

and I won't let our company down.

I'll finish my glass first.

Good!

You're not in Secret Service anymore.

What are you doing back?

You're not in Secret Service anymore either.

I'm sorry, sir.

You're right.

I should remind myself too.

I'm not in Special Service anymore either.

Regiment Commander has allowed me to participate in the selection.

I'll leave in three days.

Good for you.

Yes, sir.

I got something to say to you.

I participated in the selection too,

but I was eliminated.

We're counting on you now.

Second,

the selection is difficult.

Be prepared for anything,

not just physically, but also mentally.

I hope you succeed.

I'll keep that in mind.

I got something to say to you too.

First,

thank you.

Second,

I hope we will meet again.

I'll accept the first thing you said.

As for the second,

the world is too large.

Once I leave the regiment's gate, it'll be hard to meet again

Sir,

I'll always remember you.

Always remember Tiger Special Service instead.

Alright now. Go back.

Let's play basketball for a while.

You like to fight alone, don't you?

Come on!

Get fired up.

Look like a soldier!

Watch me!

When you have no teammate,

you have to rely on yourself.

Liu Qiang! Come play with us!

Sir!

(Company Commander bids farewell to Special Service with a basketball game.)

(In the history of Tiger Special Service,)

(he is just a small coordinate.)

(but to him,)

(Tiger Special Service is the meaning of his life.)

(Many company commanders like him)

(have passed down the responsibility)

(and dignity of a soldier from one generation to the next,)

(and imprinted the military duty and mission)

(deep into the heart of every soldier.)

(Special Service is still Tiger Special Service)

(even without Li Xiang.)

(But because of Li Xiang,)

(I'll never forget Special Service.)

(Serve The Country)

(News of the military reformation has spread throughout the regiment.)

(Some people said)

(Rapid Deployment Brigade will be transferred to an undisclosed location.)

(Staff Officer Ai has left.)

(Company Commander has left.)

(I'm leaving too.)

(Life consists of countless arrivals and departures.)

(Only by standing at the place where your dream begins)

(can you look at the new journey.)

Report, Chief!

Participants in Cheetah Special Forces Reserve

skills assessment have been assembled. Please advise.

All of you are our carefully selected talents.

You're representing Rapid Deployment Brigade

to participate in the special forces selection.

This selection is carried out

due to the deepening reform of our national defence and military,

due to the integration and expansion of

Armed Police Force and Cheetah Commando.

We have to add new forces

to the existing ones,

so each unit will pick the best and strongest soldiers

to participate in the selection.

You will face the toughest test.

You will face soldier kings from different units.

Let up for even just a bit and you're out.

If you pass the selection

and become a reserve member,

you will face the toughest training in the army

and the most dangerous missions.

Of course, this is also your honour!

And your pride!

I wish you success, and may you bring glory to our regiment!

It's getting dark.

Where exactly are they taking us?

We haven't eaten or drunk. We can't even stop to pee.

Look at what is that at your feet.

Don't touch it.

Squad Leader, this isn't locked.

-He's right. -Let's take a peek, just a peek.

Let me tell you,

they're not as kind as you think they are.

The stuff inside might not be what you want.

Do you even know...

Explosives?

Smoke sticks?

Whoever can't take it anymore, just pull it.

It's for us.

I'd advise you to use it as soon as you get out of the car.

It'll save you from all the sufferings.

Squad Leader Xiao,

I heard that you've participated several times for this selection, right?

Did you pull it every time

you got out of the car because you couldn't stand it anymore?

I'd rather eat it

than use it.

We're here.

Guys,

we got an SUV for you

at the next pickup point.

Besides me and the driver,

the vehicle will only carry three more people.

As for you guys,

who gets to ride in that SUV,

how are you going to get your spot, we don't care.

If any of you think this is stupid and you want to give up,

just pull the smoke stick in your hand.

A support team will come

to provide you with hot soup and bread.

And

chocolate.

Squad Leader Xiao,

should we...

They're laying a trap for us.

Once he said only three people can get in the car,

everyone will start to scheme against each other.

I don't believe they set the test

just to watch us fight each other.

They said they prepared an SUV

with three empty seats, right?

But they didn't say

only three people would be allowed to pass the test.

Who says that a jeep can only accommodate five people?

I saw with my own eyes

a Jeep 212 had managed

to accommodate 11 people.

The most important thing now is unity.

What do you think, Squad Leader Xiao?

I don't care.

You are all dragging me down, anyway.

Squad Leader Xiao, don't you think you're being too sure of yourself?

-Am I? -Are you not?

Why don't you try it now?

Enough, Yun Jie. Stop.

Squad Leader Xiao, let's stay united, okay?

Save your strength.

I have a plan.

Hear me out.

Sir, distress signal is spotted.

What kind of men did the 247th Regiment send us?

Drive.

Stay alert.

What are you doing?

Chief!

Stop there.

What are you doing? You want to fight me?

Squadron Leader, surrender.

You guys think you can beat me?

You don't seem to be very brilliant,

but you have a lot of guts.

You got the nerve to capture your examiner.

How do you want to do this?

One by one or together?

I'll go first.

-I'll be the second. -I'll be the third.

When Jian is tired, it'll be my turn.

I'll be the fifth then.

I'll be last then.

Fine, fine! I surrender.

The six of you together will crush me.

You guys win this round.

Tell me.

What's your next step?

Sir,

we're from Rapid Deployment Brigade's Special Service.

As you can see,

there are six of us here,

but you only want three.

We have no intention of killing each other,

so please give us a chance.

Sir, they broke the rule! You can't take any of them.

Shut up!

You said it yourself.

As long as we can find the pick-up SUV,

get in, and we'll pass.

We found the vehicle.

You're also under our control.

That means we passed.

Who said you passed?

Did you tell them that?

This round

is wilderness survival assessment.

You're supposed to

find food on your own in this Gobi Desert.

Hold on, sir,

look at your car.

Isn't the food on that car also in this Gobi Desert?

There's nothing wrong with that.

Untie him first.

Okay. Thank you, sir.

Sorry, man.

Please don't be hard on us in the future.

This is so dirty.

Let me tell you,

I'll let you pass this round,

but I will not forget this.

Get in!

Sir, what's your name? How should we address you?

Anything. Driver, or captive, anything you want.

Don't be mad at us.

We had no other option.

We were afraid that you would leave us there.

Then, we wouldn't even be able to find the gate of the base.

Just consider this as you're observing us closely

as our leader.

That's right.

I can't afford to be your leader.

Sir,

we will do whatever you say,

follow your orders,

and try to show you our value.

Squadron Leader, please forgive us.

So,

tell us about the rules of the training after this.

Yes, yes.

Tonight, we will arrive at the site of actual combat drill of this assessment.

There are a total of 60 soldiers participated in this selection.

You need to form a team of three, with anyone you like.

You'll compete against other teams.

Your goal is to enter the centre of the designated area in the drill site.

The final two surviving groups

will become reserve members of special forces.

Members of other groups

are still on wilderness survival test.

When you arrive later, you can prepare first.

Squad Leader, it's free combination of three people.

The three of us are sitting in a car now.

That already makes us a team, doesn't it?

What about Zi Jian and Gao Zhun?

Never mind them.

They and Xiao Fei are from the same hometown.

-They are already complicit with him. -That's right.

Yan Po Yue, you're from the headquarters.

Are you willing to form a team with me?

Sir, what are you talking about?

You're treating him like an outsider.

Yan hasn't been in the headquarters that long.

Right, Yan? Say something.

Sir, I'm willing to fight alongside you.

That sounds so touching.

Fine, but I have a request.

You must listen to my command in all your actions.

-Yes, sir. -Yes, sir.

I mean, about yesterday,

you can't tell anyone.

Copy that, sir.

Go on. Take them to freshen up.

Yes, sir.

Wake up. We're here.

-Captain. -You're back.

You can go.

How did it go? How many are left?

Six.

What happened?

Didn't I make it clear? I just want three men.

What's wrong? You got off on the wrong foot?

I let my guard down and got ambushed.

They managed to ambush our Squadron Leader Lu Tu.

Interesting.

Special forces' weapons are so cool.

The best soldier deserves the best gun.

If I can join special forces,

I'd love to live in this armoury.

Give me this sniper,

and I can hit the target at 500 meters farther.

Right. Keep bluffing.

Whatever.

Zi Jian, Gao Zhun.

Squad Leader.

You both heard about the selection rules, right?

Three person a team, competing against one another.

Sir,

actually we've discussed about this in the car.

We're going to team up with Squad Leader Xiao.

We just haven't got a chance to tell you.

Here's the thing, sir.

We and Squad Leader Xiao are from the same hometown.

That's why we...

I have no problem with whoever you want to team up with.

Squad Leader Xiao.

Zi Jian and Gao Zhun are soldiers of Special Service.

Please look after them.

Listen up.

You all

have GPS digital maps on you.

It can locate and display yours

and your teammates' locations.

And it has pinned the location of the central area you need to go to.

The moment you step out of the troop carrier,

get into mutual attack mode instantly.

The smoke pack on the eliminated personnel will emit red smoke.

You all didn't bring enough food.

So,

our drone will drop some supplies periodically.

After the supply lands,

it will emit blue smoke.

And of course,

whether you can get it depends on your ability.

48 hours later,

we will pick up the two groups

that make it till the end in the central area.

Am I clear?

Yes, sir!

Chen Dian.

Yes, sir!

Get ready to board the car and head to the site.

Yes, sir!

All participants will be sent

to different starting points.

On my command.

All of you, right face!

Board the car!

Oh my!

It looks so real.

It's like shooting a movie.

It is real.

It's a real battle.

Yan Po Yue, check our current location.

We are 5 km from the central area.

Get moving!

Get moving!

The building at six o'clock

has an open view and is suitable for concealment.

Turn your communicator to channel one.

Yan Po Yue, find a high point to keep a lookout.

Search nearby buildings, confirm its security.

Yes, sir!

Shots fired at seven o'clock.

Yun Jie, I'll guard the window. I'll leave the door to you.

Yes, sir.

Sir, we have guests at one o'clock.
