(Glory of Special Forces)

(This series is Shanghai's major literary and artistic project)

(Episode 8)

-Mum! -What's the situation?

Xiang.

Ting.

Mum is still inside, and a soldier too.

Li, Li, don't panic.

I know! I'm not panic!

-Li! -Commander!

-Xiang! -Mrs. Li, Mrs. Li, let us handle this.

-Xiao Yun Jie! -Commander!

-Second Squad Leader! -Yes, sir!

-Take Mrs. Li to the car. -Yes, sir!

-First Squad Leader! -Yes, sir!

-Seal off the area. -Yes, sir!

Second and Third Squard, come with me!

Go! Go!

Go! Go!

Here.

Tian, what's the situation?

Yan is inside.

Sir, be careful!

Sir!

Squads and platoons, split up and search for the possible rescue routes.

Yes, sir!

Madam.

I'm coming.

Where is Ting?

They got out of here.

Don't worry.

Commander and the other guys are out there,

trying to figure out a way to save us.

I...I can't move.

Madam, hang in there.

Madam, just hold on.

What time is it?

Madam, I don't have the answer.

I don't know either.

I just want to see Xiang.

Why is it so hard?

Don't worry.

We'll make it out.

And you'll be able to see Commander.

Madam, give me a minute.

I'll go and get you some water from the trunk.

-Give it to me. -Dig!

Dig!

Pass it over.

Take it.

Careful, careful.

Sir, we've confirmed it.

The trapped victims are Special Service company commander's mother

and Yan Po Yue.

First Battalion, Second Battalion, depart to the rescue at once.

Third battalion on standby, ready to move.

All units directly under the regiment, gear up.

Yes, sir!

Also, get the medical unit to set out immediately,

get ready to tend to the wounded.

Yes, sir!

The length of this tunnel is 1.5 km.

The field survey shows that

the entire tunnel is adjacent to the mountain wall.

And there are many rocks on the mountainside.

Squad Leader Fan,

where is the supply truck located?

Here.

This is where the car flipped over.

This is the collapsed area. It's very near.

Is forklift excavation possible?

Forklift won't be able to get in.

And direct excavation will trigger the fall of the rocks above.

What about manpower?

Political Commissar,

the inside of the tunnel is currently blocked by rubble.

Small-scale collapses still occur at some locations.

Yes, we are short of manpower. Reinforcements are needed.

Have you contacted a professional rescue team?

Yes.

But heavy equipment will take at least 20 hours to arrive.

How is Li Xiang doing?

He's still digging.

He's very emotional.

What other solutions are there?

I have two in mind.

The first solution.

Blow up the collapsed area with explosives.

Adopt manpower and excavation equipment to enter the area.

It's too dangerous

and slow.

What is your second solution?

Human-wave tactics.

Excavate with conventional tools.

Carry out deep excavation from the top of the collapsed part of the tunnel.

Blocks that are shovelled out will be carried out by manpower.

But in the process, not only must everyone ensure speed,

we must remain alert at all times as well.

In the event of a rockfall or landslide,

we must withdraw immediately.

Looks like this is the only way to go.

I found some water.

Here. Drink slowly.

Young man, you should drink some too.

I'm fine. You should have some more.

Madam, hang in there a little longer.

I'll bandage you now.

Madam, it may hurt a little.

Done.

Thank you, young man.

It's the least I could do.

Xiang bought me this phone.

He usually doesn't allow me to call him.

Now that I want to call him,

I can't get a signal.

Madam,

Commander will definitely get us out of here.

He will.

Madam, the tunnel is going to collapse again! We have to go now!

Young man,

you go without me!

Madam! Let's go!

Hurry!

Madam, are you okay?

-I'm fine. -Come.

Easy.

Is your leg okay?

I'm fine.

(Sorry.)

(The number you have dialled is temporarily unavailable.)

(Please try again later.)

No one has been here for a long time.

Young man,

what's your name?

My name is Yan Po Yue.

How long have you been in the army?

I was enlisted last year.

Since we can't get out, you should sit down and rest.

Talk to me.

Are you in Xiang's company?

How is he doing?

Great.

He's doing really great.

How is he treating you?

Nice.

He's being nicer to me than my own father is.

My boy, Xiang,

has been kind-hearted since he was little.

He's always nice to everyone he meets.

When he met someone,

he blushed before he could say anything.

Instructor, look!

The rocks and soils have started to loosen.

(Command post. Command post.)

This is command post. Please speak.

(Regiment Commander, the soil above the tunnel is loosening.)

(Landslides may occur any time.)

(We're trying to stop it.)

(Rescue units under the tunnel are advised to evacuate immediately.)

Command post roger that.

Regiment Commander,

the rescue teams have dug five metres, we're approaching target range.

Continue the rescue mission at this point would be tantamount to suicide.

Landslides can occur at any second.

Regiment Commander,

I suggest to withdraw the rescue team immediately.

And continue the mission after the rain stops.

Otherwise, not only will we not be able to save them,

more lives will be put at risk.

This is Liu Chuan Ming.

All units are ordered

to withdraw.

Everybody, pull back now!

Signs of landslides are seen!

Evacuate now!

Li,

landslide may happen at any time.

It's too dangerous.

We have to evacuate now.

Everyone, evacuate immediately!

I'm not leaving! I'm not leaving!

-Me neither! -Me neither!

I'm not leaving!

This is an order!

All of you! Run and get out of here! Now!

Pull back now!

First Squad Leader, you guys go first.

Third Squad Leader, make a way out.

Evacuate now!

Yan is still inside!

You can't go!

Stay!

Yan is still inside!

Everyone, get out of here!

-Now! -I'm begging you!

I'm begging you.

Don't go.

Yan.

Save him!

Save him!

The air vent has collapsed.

It's filled with rocks.

Completely blocked.

Without ventilation,

we will run out of oxygen.

Madam, give me your phone.

Madam, are you okay?

I'm fine.

All rescue units have been withdrawn.

The worst situation has occurred.

Rescue excavations

have to be suspended.

Due to the continuous heavy rain,

the area has showed signs of landslide.

It may be triggered at any time.

When

will the rain stop?

We checked the weather.

The rain will stop two days later.

What about

the professional rescue unit?

We've reported to the higher-up and Ministry of Works.

Tunnel engineers have also arrived.

However,

judging from the current situation,

even after the heavy equipment has arrived, it still won't work.

If we continue,

it'll only cause more casualties.

Regiment Commander.

I request...

I request

to abort the rescue.

Only by aborting the rescue

can we avoid greater casualties.

As a soldier,

what I should do at a time like this

is to prevent the situation from getting any worse.

However,

as a son,

as the elder brother of Yan Po Yue,

please allow me

to act on my own for once.

Regiment Commander, Political Commissar,

I have to try.

Hello?

(Mum, are you okay?)

(This isn't her.)

(Madam is next to me.)

Don't hang up.

You mustn't hang up.

Xiang,

it's Yan Po Yue.

He's with mum.

(Yan Po Yue, what's the situation there?)

Madam is slightly injured.

On her leg.

The bleeding has stopped.

Her bone should be fine.

(Is there any water? And food?)

We have a bottle of water.

No more food.

(You must conserve water.)

(Only drink one capful at a time.)

I got it.

Company Commander,

where we are trapped,

I think we're running out of oxygen.

(Yan Po Yue, this is Regiment Commander.)

Yes, Regiment Commander!

(What is the situation around you?)

We are inside one of the tunnel's safety door.

We're trapped.

The door is blocked by rubble.

The air vent is blocked too.

(Okay.)

(We'll get you out of there as soon as possible.)

(Reduce movement, save your strength.)

(Contact us once every hour.)

Yes, sir!

(Save the battery.)

That'll be all for now.

Madam,

Commander is just outside the cave.

Our regiment commander is here too.

They're looking for ways to save us.

We'll get out of here.

We will.

Let's have some water.

-Okay. -But we can only drink a little.

Only one capful at a time.

Okay.

Here, drink slowly.

You should drink some too.

-Never mind. -Drink it.

-I'm not thirsty. -Drink, drink it.

This section of the tunnel has three safe rooms.

Normally used by road maintenance staff for rest.

Here, here, and here.

The locations are dispersed.

Can we confirm which one they are in?

He isn't sure of the location he's in.

Due to the signs of landslides,

large equipment can't go up there.

We are now left with manpower option.

Regiment Commander, Political Commissar,

the Blue Sky Rescue Team sent by the province is here.

Sir, I'm Cheng Gong of the Blue Sky Rescue Team.

Thank you so much for your help.

The current situation doesn't look good.

Regiment Commander!

Any news from Yan Po Yue?

He hasn't called.

The rain's too heavy.

Construction of the retaining wall is very slow.

The signs of landslides are becoming more noticeable.

We're ordered to send more men over to help.

All my men are here!

They are all above the tunnel digging a passage down.

Sir, we should deploy all those who are left behind.

Except for the sentries, all men deploy!

Yes, sir!

Staff Officer Ai, do you have any other ideas?

If we put a few trucks across

the top of the landslide area,

it'll buy us more time.

Drive all the cars up there.

Load the trucks with rocks.

Turn them into temporary retaining wall.

-Yes, sir! -Go now!

Two movements are not standard.

Again.

Faster.

Faster.

Faster. Faster.

Don't help him.

Lift the wood up.

Keep running!

Why?

Why?

Because you're not strong enough. Far from enough!

You had a nightmare?

I'm fine.

Yan,

it's useless.

We can't just do nothing and wait.

Madam.

Madam.

Madam, are you okay? Madam?

Madam.

Are you okay?

Madam, wake up.

I can't breathe.

We're running out of oxygen

in this room.

We're in safe room No.3.

I have to tell them.

Be careful of the truck on your way up.

Down! Down!

This way!

Watch out for the truck.

Go, go, go! Keep up!

Hello?

Hello?

Hold on.

Hello?

Hello?

Yan Po Yue?

Safe room No.3.

Safe room No.3.

Okay, I heard you!

(Yan Po Yue,)

(you must hang in there.)

If you make it out alive,

I... I will...

I'll buy you dinner!

You hear me?

Hold on tight!

Hold this.

Come on.

Two more men here!

Complete the mission.

Go back alive.

Complete the mission.

Go back alive.

Complete the mission.

Go back alive.

Sir! Sir!

The trucks won't be able to hold it off much longer.

The landslide is about to strike.

-How long do we have? -Two minutes at the most.

Maybe we should retreat first.

Madam,

stay awake.

We have to go back alive.

This way, this way. Hurry!

Yes, sir!

We're here.

Sir, I heard a noise.

It's from here.

Everyone, stop moving!

They're here! Hurry!

Hurry! Hurry!

They're here! Hurry!

Hurry!

Hurry up! Move faster!

Yan Po Yue! Yan Po Yue!

Sir, we found them!

Yan Po Yue!

Yan Po Yue!

-Madam! -Mum!

-Yan, can you still move? Hang in there! -Quick! Go down the tunnel!

Hurry! Hurry!

Move fast! Move fast!

Slow down, slow down.

-Easy, easy. -Slow down.

-Untie the rope. -Untie it.

-Stretcher! -Stretcher!

Easy, easy.

Carry her out first.

-Yan! -Yan Po Yue!

-Yan Po Yue! -Hurry! Grab the rope!

-Yan Po Yue! -It's coming down!

Everyone, get out of here!

-Grab the rope! -Yan Po Yue!

Get them out of there!

-Come up, Yan Po Yue! -Yan Po Yue!

We're out of time!

Yan Po Yue is still in there!

Yan Po Yue!

I need to get out.

I need to get out.

What's wrong, Madam?

Regiment Commander.

Madam, I'm Regiment Commander.

You have to save Yan Po Yue.

Don't worry, Madam.

We'll save him.

Yes, Madam.

Please lie down.

I told him to go without me.

He got so anxious that his eyes were red.

And he yelled at me that

the soldier here is not dead yet,

it's not your turn to play the hero.

Don't worry, Madam.

We will get our soldier back!

We will!

-Let's go! -Yes, sir!

You're not in the mood to eat?

Will you have any strength if you don't eat?

How are you going to save him if you don't have strength?

Eat! Finish it!

Lu Xiao Tian, give him another steamed bun.

Finish your food.

Take a big bite!

Get back to digging after this!

One, two, three.

One, two, three.

One, two, three.

Come on.

Dig!

Harder! Harder!

Watch your hand.

Push it!

Hurry.

Xiao.

It's been one whole day.

Yan Po Yue!

Who do think you are?

You've undergone hardcore training since you were little,

and you've learned to survive in the wild.

You asked me to join the army with you, and here I am.

So many of us have been digging for all day long!

Who do you think you are?

You're trapped by a few stupid rocks.

You got the audacity to say you would be King of Recruits!

I'm going to laugh at you forever!

Aren't you the strongest?

Aren't you going to teach me anymore?

Where are you?

How can you not keep your word?

I'm better than you!

We're all trying to save you!

Stop messing with us!

Come out! Come out!

We had a deal.

I'll buy you dinner when you get out.

Come out now!

Come out now! Do you hear me?

Come out!

Let's all shout together.

Let him hear us!

Yan Po Yue, come out!

Yan Po Yue, come out!

Yan Po Yue, come out!

Yan Po Yue, come out!

Yan Po Yue! Yan Po Yue!

Yan Po Yue!

Yan Po Yue, come out!

He's here!

Yan!

-Yan Po Yue! -Quick. Careful!

Easy.

One, two, pull!

Easy, easy.

Come!

Make way!

Be careful.

Careful! Watch your foot!

Easy, easy!

Watch your foot!

-Careful. -Yan.

I knew you're still alive.

I'll live.

Hang in there, Yan Po Yue!

Hang in there!

Stretcher!

Comrades,

the emergency rescue and disaster relief this time

was under time-pressure and challenging.

The situation was critical.

(PAP Regiment 247 Emergency Aid And) Special Service Company initiated

(Disaster Relief Commendation Ceremony) the contingency plan immediately,

sending rescue teams to the site promptly,

arranging emergency aid and disaster relief,

rescuing the trapped military family.

Special Service Private Yan Po Yue in particular, despite the dangers,

his courage and spirit of heroism

have left a deep impression.

After a concerted effort by the whole regiment,

we not only removed the danger,

the military family was rescued as well.

This is the kind of soldier

our regiment needs most,

a role model for today's soldiers!

Sir.

I want water.

What time is it?

See for yourself.

Are you here to visit me

or yell at me?

Lung infection.

Severe dehydration and hypoxia.

If you were found any later,

this would've been your funeral,

Martyr Yan Po Yue.

I'm fine.

You're still smiling?

Others may not know what you're thinking,

but I know.

I just wanted to save her.

Is that really all you wanted?

Someone has to do it.

Why couldn't it be me?

Yes.

You're a hero now.

The whole regiment now sees you as a great hero.

I just want to be the strongest soldier.

I learned it from you.

You little brat.

Mark my words.

No matter how tough you are,

you can't always be this lucky.

Your parents gave you life.

It's not for you to waste it!

He's yelling.

He just woke up. Don't talk long.

-He needs more rest. -Yes, Squad Leader Fan.

The apple is so sweet.

It's a pity that there is only two. I'll have one for myself.

Xiao and Tian are here too.

Who should I give the last one to?

Forget it.

I'll keep it all to myself.

You have to give me, of course.

We're close.

Are you okay?

In that case,

who should I give this hero-exclusive

and wish-you-good-luck bone soup

that is made overnight to?

Don't just put in bones.

Add some ginseng and sea cucumber too.

Want to eat ginseng and sea cucumber?

Then, your injury isn't enough.

You have to undergo post-partum confinement.

That's right.

Seeing that your eyes are radiant,

and you're still handsome,

Squad Leader's tough medicine works pretty well.

More like laxative.

He's being such a buzzkill.

Your flattery doesn't work on him.

Yan, let me tell you something serious.

I have a good news and a mediocre news.

Which one would you like to hear first?

-Either one is fine. -The good news first then.

Word of your heroic deeds

has spread around the regiment.

Now you just need to wait for your merit award.

We'll be assigned to the same squad one day.

What about the bad news?

You're such a wuss.

Company Commander is going to be transferred.

He's leaving?

What about Special Service then?

It's not that soon.

By the time the order comes, it will be next year at the very least.

It's good. No one will pick fights with you anymore, right?

Company Commander is happy too.

As a celebration, I've decided to eat a lychee.

Put it back!

Fine. Why do you care?

This is a gift for Yan, you know?

You always take people's food.

What's wrong with you?

(Hearing that Company Commander is leaving,)

(it didn't make me happy.)

(It's like I'm losing a rival.)

(Because of him,)

(I was forced to grow,)

(to feel frustrated, to feel anger)

(and to persevere in setbacks.)

(I'm beginning to miss this feeling.)

I've read your transfer report.

I know that

this incident has a huge impact on you.

I understand it.

Although you have personal reasons,

I still hope you can give this a careful consideration.

I did.

I can't be an ostrich anymore.

I'm 32 years old.

I've been together with Zhang Ting for six years.

We've discussed about marriage several times.

She's been waiting for me to go back and marry her.

For soldiers,

a stable life is a luxury.

My mum has had enough of the fact

that her son has been wasting a nice girl's time.

So, she personally brought her future daughter-in-law here

to look for her son.

At the moment when these two women departed,

the common goal they set for themselves is

to bring me home.
