wrestling toys in WWE history.

In the 1980s, larger -than -life sports
entertainment personalities like Hulk

Hogan and the Macho Man, yeah!

Randy Savage.

captivated audiences worldwide, and
helped WWE explode into mainstream pop

culture. And for all of us who grew up
watching, we simply could not get enough

of these live and in -person superheroes
doing battle.

So it was no surprise when these WWE
superstars ended up as action figures in

playrooms across the globe.

I really love wrestling figures.

I had all different types of action
figures.

But the wrestling ones were the ones
that always, you know, had me just

with it.

We're looking back at things like He
-Man, like Transformers, like Ninja

Wrestling was right there with all of
it.

Most people online know me as Pixel Dan.
I'm a toy historian, a YouTuber, and

an author.

You had to buy these toys so that you
knew what it was like to be in the ring

like all of the superstars.

I'm like a psycho with these things.

I'm a fan at heart.

Us as grown adults have so many fond
memories of playing with these action

figures. I would just create little
storylines and I have all my action

and I would do it for hours and hours
and hours and hours. I had record

I had books literally with my win -loss
records.

Of course, I'm in charge, right? It's my
own world.

You're taking what you see and what you
enjoy watching and you're in control of

it. And hours and hours and hours.

I was literally playing with these
action figures until I was like 17 years

There's no shame in admitting that.

It was a nice like...

live, in -person, visceral experience
with your heroes from television.

I mean, if you look at some of the toy
lines over the years, it's really not

hard to see why we're such big fans of
this.

The AWA mini grappler dolls of the road
warriors, the fabulous ones, plus many

more. It was actually AWA that had the
first American line of grappling action

figures.

Very much in the style with what was
popular at the time in the 1980s,

specifically He -Man and the Masters of
the Universe.

Tremendous leg definition on Ric Flair,
by the way. Fully adjustable, fully

poised dolls that are available through
Remco.

It still holds up. It really, really
does.

It kind of took that jump to the
merchandise to a whole other level. And

wrestling went this way and it's never
looked back. Are you ready to fight?

So here in my hand is a couple of 1990
Galoob WCW figures. There's Sting with

Rat Tail. It was always one of my
favorite parts.

Remarkable how much it really looks like
me.

You can do a very particular move with
certain guys.

Like Luger. His arms are like this. He's
got a heck of a DDT.

Truly about it. These WCW action figures
are just as tough and as mean as we

are. The Galoob era commercials were
fantastic.

You figure I'll put the whammy on you
and give you a close one.

Oh, my gosh.

Oh, that brings back some memories

when I watch that, for sure, yeah.

I dare anybody to take us on. It really
seemed like in the 90s that wrestling

toys were everywhere.

WWE, WCW,

ECW.

It was really such a boom period when it
came to the figures. Have you seen my

auction figure?

Can't find it anywhere.

Sometimes we got wrestling figures that
weren't necessarily all about pro

wrestling. I'm looking at the new WWF
squirt heads. Who doesn't need a Jake

Snake Roberts squirt head?

What'd he say?

All right, WCW figure right here.

What is this?

You can see the little red button on the
side, and when you press it, they

vibrate.

Oh, okay.

Why does he vibrate?

Okay, I've had a lot of strange comments
on this one. Why does he just vibrate?

Where was this used?

For kids, you know, come on.

I can't believe you have this.

right up there with Slapshot.

Welcome, everyone, to the Major
Wrestling Figure Podcast.

So really, the Major Wrestling Figure
Podcast came from Matt and I being

over that we both collected wrestling
figures.

We're 38 now, and it's still something
that's very important to us.

We've made it socially acceptable, plus
cool to collect stuff.

I'll never forget TakeOver 25, and a fan
made a Mattel action

figure of myself. It still has a special
place on my shelf.

It reminds me of so many old times that
seemed so far away, but when I have

those action figures in my hand.

It is like it's all there again. I can
remember it like it was yesterday and

much joy and positive memories I connect
to action figures.

Talk about putting smiles on people's
faces.

Action figures are a pretty common sight
these days when perusing down the toy

aisle at your local Target.

But... Before there were 1 ,000 points
of articulation, facial scanned heads,

and swappable hands, our scaled -down
superstars existed in the simplest and

greatest way possible, as a giant and
heavy toy made out of rubber.

Its simplicity was its beauty, and
legions of kids across the world just

have them.

WWE action figures were released by LJN
in 1984.

I'm an

LJN child.

Earliest memories are four or five years
old with the rubber, indestructible.

Thick pose.

These, now, you've got to pick up a
minimum, kiddies, of at least a half a

for yourselves. They're available in
stores everywhere.

And now you can fly them and flip them
and just swing them, swing them,

ring. It's the best, hottest thing in
the market.

I feel like when I talk about my first
action figures, I feel like my parents

talking about their first television.

These giant, like, nine -pound rubber
things that you could break down

with. Here's George, Jim.

I've got great hammer, Valentine.

Ricky the Dragon's feet. This figure is
actually my dad. It's from his own

personal collection. It's the very first
ever action figure.

These are dolls.

These are action toys.

Girls play with dolls.

We're men, baby.

Twist them.

Flip them.

Fight them like the big guys.

There's even Andre the Giant.

Rustling superstars, each sold
separately.

Take a look at this, ladies and
gentlemen, children of all ages.

There is Hulk Hogan.

There is Hulk Hogan, your champion.

Hulk looks dehydrated. He looks sickly.

Those are not 24 -inch pythons right
there. This is a man who needs a meal

nap. This does not look like my guy, the
guy that I spent the 80s worshipping.

With the introduction of LJN figures.

fans could create dream matches of their
very own. Big match at my house. I'll

bring my guys. You have yours.

Colton, I was Andre.

I would say, oh, please, Mr. Scott,
don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. I'd have

drop you.

No, no, Mr. Scott. No, Mr.

Scott. Tell me about Zoom.

The kids have to grow up like the orange
sheep.

Yeah,

the winner. The winner. The winner.

The new champion.

Jake the Snake. This was one of my
favorite figures as a kid.

The snake is not there, if you'll
notice. I knew a lot of people who had

and the next Jake's snake figure. Oh, my
God, you have the snake.

I have never held the actual snake that
came with this figure.

Look at the size of that huge snake.

What are you going to do, LJN, when the
16 -inch hulkster doll runs wild on you?

LJN's wrestling figures have a
devastating impact on the action figure

and the momentum is just beginning.

thumb wrestle, which is ridiculous

you can't really thumb wrestle with them
on.

One, two, three. Go, go, go. Oh, oh, oh.
We would do it where, oh, you knocked

him off his hand. Oh, oh, Hillbilly Jim
has won this matchup. Jax realized that

that wasn't such a bad idea that LJN
had, so Jax decided to do it themselves

make these thumb wrestlers of guys like
Stone Cold Steve Austin and Hunter

Hearst Helmsley.

Yeah, I could see that could probably be
fun for a little bit.

Every child in America knows this
classic play activity, and that's what

thumb wrestlers a natural winner.

Never, ever once to this very day have I
ever competed in a thumb wrestling

match with these sort of superstars. But
they provided me with a... reasonable

amount of entertainment you can't pin
them especially like the way you pin the

thumb this guy would be phased out
anyway but i had all these guys

what time period you're in you've got to
have thumb wrestlers step right up and

put the challenge of wrestling in your
hands with the thumb wrestlers

i had them and i loved them and

you guys have dirty minds by the way i
never thought twice about where i was

sticking my thumb

What is wrong with you people?

Anyway, let's move along to 1990 when
famed toy company Hasbro entered the

with their own spin on how to create a
WWE action figure that, well, finally

brought the action.

Featuring innovative spring -loaded
signature movements, as well as

details and likenesses in a smaller form
factor, Hasbro's WWE line was a smash

hit.

New WWE action figure so close to the
real thing.

It's like being in the ring.

When you talk about a wrestling fan and
when you bring up wrestling action

figures, I feel like these are the first
that they think of, these Hasbro

figures.

This was always my favorite figure, this
one.

I haven't seen it in years. It's such a
trip.

Probably some of the most iconic WWE
action figures.

They look cool.

You got this bit of nostalgia.

Hasbros, they just make me happy.

After LJN, Hasbro picked up the line.
And instead of making these giant 8

rubber figures, they made these 4 -inch
figures that all were hard plastic and

had some kind of action to them.

Oh yeah, look at that. Right there. Bam.

Bam. Run into the ring.

You didn't have to mimic them hitting
something. They could do it on their

Bam. Lights out.

It was just cool to put something in
front of it and just for no reason just

smack the hell out of it.

Bam.

They had accessories.

They had the ring.

I still remember the commercial.

Perfectly ridiculous.

With Mr. Perfect. You can achieve
perfection. Why aren't we doing

like this now?

In terms of collecting this line,
there's definitely some rarities out

This is not the rare version. The rare
version has a moon painted

on the belly.

There was mail -aways that was available
in WWE magazine.

There's Bret Hart, an Undertaker, and a
Hogan. And people didn't get them. And

then years later, when you're collecting
this Hasbro line and you want to be

complete, you need these.

They are not easy to come by. This is
the original mail -away Hulk Hogan

in the original bat.

One of the tag teams they promoted was
the Honky Tonk Man with Greg Valentine

Rhythm and Blue.

Except the figure never actually came
out.

You go to the store, you go to the
store, there's the other three teams.

Never Rhythm and Blues. And then years
later, the prototypes have surfaced.

Greg the Hammer Valentine from that ad,
that prototype. I own that in my

collection. I spent a lot of money on
it. Too much money to disclose here.

I think he spent $24 ,000 or something
on that Greg Valentine.

The last line that Hasbro put out was
the green card series.

Yokozuna, Ludwig Borga, the 123 Kid, the
Smoking Guns, Crush.

Those are the rarest of the rare.

This thing out of the packaging, worth
like $1 ,000.

They were produced in smaller
quantities, so figures like for Yokozuna

more pricey to get on the aftermarket
today. And as a result, highly

collectible.

Fortunately for WWE fans, the Hasbro
figures bring one thing you can't put a

price tag on.

Nostalgia. This is yours. You keep it.
It's from me to you. I think people,

kind of want to revise history and think
these were dumbed -down figures. But

you look at the sculpt, you look at the
facial details, it's pretty incredible.

I mean, these are awesome. Look at them.
These definitely show the era of toys.

I don't know what it is about them.

Like, you see them, and you just feel
all warm and fuzzy inside.

This is one of the things that made...

childhood so special.

All you needed was your toys and
imagination, and for four or five hours,

set.

Hasbro is without question the most
iconic toy line when it comes to

ever.

Iconic, beloved, and still one of the
most sought -after collectibles to this

day. Hasbro's timeless design was a
winner then.

and remains alive through Mattel's
reimagining of the toy line.

Now, the ability to act as general
manager of the WWE roster is a big part

the fun.

But if we're being honest, dropping your
own flying elbow onto a WWE superstar

is pretty hard to beat.

Enter Wrestling Buddy.

Somewhere between a pillow and a
playmate, Wrestling Buddy's let kids

world and overgrown children, me,
actually get in on the action.

In a supervised manner, of course, of
course.

Oh, my God, this.

This was my childhood.

This is a wrestling buddy.

Wrestling buddy.

I had like five of these. By far the
most badass.

Oh, my gosh. Everybody loved the
wrestling buddies.

Wrestling buddies are looking for
action.

1990, Tonka released the wrestling
buddies.

which are just like pillows that look
like your favorite WWE superstars for

to wrestle. Come on, warrior, let's go.

How'd you like to hug the ultimate
warrior, Bonk Hulk Hogan, or wrestle

royalty? In the Macho King, Randy
Savage, the arms moved any way you

the legs moved.

Either you can be happy with them, or
you can be mad at them, you know, or you

can practice your moves on them.

If you wanted the ultimate warrior to do
a hurricanrana, he could.

Trying to suplex this cat.

Or a pile driver.

On these numerous times.

You know. Wrestling buddies want to be
your buddies.

It's exactly the one I had, Warrior.

This was my teddy bear on my bed.

Did I have wrestling buddies? You better
believe I had this one. I had Hogan. I

had a Hulk Hogan one and a Ted DiBiase.

They lived on my bed until I was
probably in high school.

I put on little shows that my parents
had to sit there and watch for hours.

I've always wanted a wrestling buddy.

Never got one because I didn't have a
good dad.

It was your way to be a pro wrestler
before you were a pro wrestler. I would

to put a figure four leg lock on this
little dude. Real life.

Don't you look mean now.

I spent hundreds of hours wrestling this
exact doll in

my grandparents' living room. To the
point where like the stuffing was out of

his joint.

This right here is the epitome of a kid
growing up wrestling on their bed.

Henry, will you please see what those
boys are up to? There was a commercial

where the kids were wrestling upstairs
with their wrestle buddies, and the dad

comes upstairs, and he's checking on
them. Hey, fellas, what's going on?

Nothing, Dad.

Drop dead!

Who do you think you are?

That's Hulk Hogan! Because of these, I
wanted my bed to be a wrestling ring.

Henry, what's going on up there?

Nothing, dear.

Then they made a second set, which is a
little bit more difficult to come by.

They had Jake the Snake Roberts, the Big
Boss Man, and, of course, Hawk and

Animal, Legion of Doom.

Look at the wise guy!

Big Boss Man!

Wrestling buddies are so iconic that
there's been so many versions of them

the years.

Bone -crunching buddies, they're bad to
the bone.

Like any good thing, there's always the
sequel.

Oh, see, so I didn't know all that.

WCW came out with the Brawling Buddies.
Get off my nose!

It's like they're alive!

Okay,

Hulk, that is not all I got.

Bleacher Buddies have carried on the
tradition of the Wrestling Buddies. You

get the new generation guys like Cody
Rhodes.

This is his ring gear, this is his belt.
There's actually a lot of detail that

they put into these, even the back.

We were throwing these guys around. We
were elbow dropping them, doing as much

physical damage we possibly could. Don't
try this at home, but you can beat up a

WrestleBuddy.

Out of all the toys, this is the one
that gives me the warm and fuzzy

Probably my favorite toy growing up. I'm
working through something right now.

Give me a second.

That's nice.

Ladies and gentlemen, they made me a
wrestling buddy like me. They made me,

Miller, a wrestling buddy. My son's
going to freak out. I have a two -year

son. I have to dress like this when I
give it to him, I guess, to really drive

it home.

This is amazing.

Now, from toys you batter to toys you
bend, just toys bend them.

These figures were famous for being
twistable and poseable, letting you bend

your favorite superstars into all kinds
of crazy configurations.

Just Toys Bend 'ems, in my opinion, the
most underrated wrestling figure toy

line.

In 1994, just as the Hasbro figure
started to disappear from shelves, Just

Toys Bend 'ems started to appear on toy
shelves.

Yeah, I like these.

I always liked it just because I kind of
thought it was a cool looking figure.

My torso is longer than my legs in this.

That kind of made them durable for
little kids to play with, actually.

You could kind of move them around, and
they'll fall back into position, so you

don't have to worry about the plastic
breaking or an arm falling off.

And, you know, Sean could do some music
with this figure.

Look at that.

Bret Hart cheerleading with the flips
there.

And that's the kind of fun you can have
with the bend -ems.

I thought what made these figures very,
very cool is there's a signature molded

into the back.

To see what everybody's autograph
actually looked like was fun.

Oh, yeah, that's my autograph for sure.
I'm known for the big looping L's.

If you missed out on your green card
series 1 -2 -3 Kid, the bend -ems came

through clutch.

This was the way most of us had a 1 -2
-3 Kid in our collection.

I also own the unreleased ring that
comes with a Dink the Clown. There's

been a Dink the Clown figure, but I have
the prototype.

If anyone's going to have the Dink the
Clown prototype, it's going to be me.

And our friend at the...

Major Wrestling Figure Podcast, because
of them, we're able to recreate those

bendems with their bendies line.

Having my own toy, I mean, come on.

Bendems line came and went, and people
feel sentimental about it. Matt and I

were thinking that, and we decided that
maybe we should make a continuation of

them. The major bendies.

This guy looks pretty familiar.

It's Wrestling Nerds making figures for
Wrestling Nerds. You know, it's a little

love letter to what could have been if
there was more. We're very, very proud

it.

They start here in this very cartoony
new generation era, but by the end,

they've gone all the way through the
attitude era.

Think about a toy line that has both
Doink and Takamishinoku in it. That's

something I want to be a part of.

It's badass.

I'm stealing one of each. I just want
you guys to know there's not a thing you

can do about it.

Having walked the mean streets of 8 Mile
with 30 Dom this past year and seeing a

hardened criminal like that up close,
I'm concerned that if Dominic doesn't

his bad boy ways, he's going to end up
back in the clink.

Now, vendems hold a near and dear place
in fans' hearts. But for millennials

like myself, it was all about the Jack
-specific line featuring cutting -edge

facial scam tech.

interactive places, the deepest roster
of figures yet, Jack's line of WWE toys

dripped with attitude and brought
superstars to life in a way we had never

before.

You ready to crunch somebody's bones?

I knew that you were.

How's it going, Benza? I remember that
commercial. Yes, yes. That was the

commercial that made me go get these
toys.

Hardcore figures for hardcore fans.

I think it was like late 90s up until
late 2000s. Jack was making the toys

WWE, and it was awesome. This is a good
one. These were my favorite figures of

all time.

Playtime's over.

Now we know this is old school.

So in 1996, Jack Pacific burst onto the
scene with their line

of WWE bone -crunching action figures.

Well, let's rock, little bells. The
official WWF action figures with bone

-crunching action.

So these were cool because as you would
bend them, you would hear the bones

cracking. New Pulverizing Punch in
action.

Now we're getting joint mobility.

This is one of my old Jack's godfather.
I don't know if you can see, but this is

when they started really putting detail
to things. My corn rolls, my tattoos.

These tattoos on my chest are actually
what's on my chest.

You used to have to go into a green
room, and they'd put all type of stuff

do different moves.

You go into a truck and they scan your
face, they digitally scan you, and the

faces on the figures actually look like
you now.

As you can see, I've got WWF action
figures all over me. So then Jack

legend figures line.

Many of your favorite WWE superstars in
the past came back in action figure

form. Pre -classic superstars figures,
the legend, it wasn't really celebrated.

To be able to re -release figures from
20, 30 years ago in the new, updated

format is very, very cool.

Entering the Titantron!

Even at sets where it was like the whole
stage of Titantron, and if you put your

action figure a certain way, it would
play their Titantron and their music.

I got this Titantron when I was a kid
for Christmas. It came out in 1999.

If it works for me, I'll be so happy.

Now, entering the Titantron!

So cool.

That's so cool. And I'm actually feeling
like a kid again. That is absolutely

cool. I can't believe I'm really out
here playing with this toy.

This is awesome.

It was so important that Jax
incorporated all the extra accessories

with the toys because now I was able to
tell my own stories with the

accessories. Playing with wrestling
figures for a lot of people is an escape

from reality, so we want to be able to
have as much control over it as we can.

There's a lot of different ways to
market the figures.

There was a Jax commercial with Billy
Gunn, and he's training kids.

And one of the kids in the commercial
looks like Max from Always Study in

Philadelphia. There are some connections
there. I'm just saying.

Jax would go on to produce many, many,
many years of action figures.

They were just cranking out so much good
stuff. And so that was honestly such a

good time if you were into wrestling
action figures.

They were so cool. I still have a bunch
of those at home. I'm probably going to

go home and play with them now.

Because Stone Cold said so.

Jax would produce WWE action figures for
the better part of a decade.

Certainly a golden age for wrestling
toys.

Oh, and yes, my producers here at This
Is Awesome have verified that that is

indeed Rob McElhenney of Always Sunny
and Wrexham fame, starring alongside the

badass Billy Gunn.

Kind of doing like Road Dogg does.

Now, have you ever wanted to cuddle
Stone Cold Steve Austin, curl up next to

Rock, or canoodle mankind?

Well, then do we have a toy for you.

WWE's Wrestling Beanie Babies.

Perhaps one of the most bizarre ideas
for a WWE toy line, it nonetheless

capitalized on a craze that was sweeping
the nation.

Oh, wow.

Oh, my gosh.

This is bad.

The bears are here. They're going bad. I
had no idea that they did these.

I feel like I'm holding on to like a
national treasure.

Popularity with the bears. You're not
going to go wrong on these. Once upon a

time, the hottest toys in the entire
world were Beanie Babies.

If you're too young to remember this, my
heart.

Beanie Babies were these little stuffed
animals. I don't know why they blew up.

I don't know what it was, but everybody
needed one. Everyone in America decided

that these little understuffed animals.

would be worth thousands or millions.

We could be millionaires.

Yeah, it could be our college money. I
think I ate about 17 ,000 Happy Meals as

a child to get all the Beanie Babies.
That's probably why I'm a fat kid.

When something becomes incredibly
popular, you get a lot of copycat.

WWE was no stranger with the
introduction of Attitude Bears.

How about the WWF Attitude Bears? This
is the brand new assortment.

I am embarrassed to say that I had all
of these.

It's really smart as a collector to pick
up each grouping because then you've

completed your set.

I remember they were sold on the Home
Shopping Network.

Four in each package, $38 .85 for each
set. And I mean, they were literally

bears that said the wrestler on the
bear. They were representative of your

favorite superstar.

You got The Rock here.

You got Kane here.

You got The Undertaker here.

These three bears are nine inches tall,

and they're holding that hope that it's
going to be worth a million dollars. And

maybe it will. You never know. Just over
a minute remaining, you get these great

attitude bears.

universally loved and widely collected.

I have a bunch of them. My kid has a
bunch of them. I bet Dom stole a bunch

them. But in fact, I bet right now you
have a bunch sitting in your house or

office at this very moment.

If you don't know what a Funko Pop is,
you are definitely living under a rock

this point because Funko Pops are
everywhere.

There is nowhere you go where you don't
see these. There's shops dedicated to

just specifically these.

Funko Pops is a really nice way to
commemorate all of your interests, from

television to movies to sports to sports
entertainment.

Everybody's a Funko Pop except me at
this point. You can literally find any

character, anything that has become a
Funko Pop. Oh, and here's another

matchup. It's WWE, Funko and me, Big
Snoop Dogg.

They all are very simplistic, and they
all have the same kind of design.

Oversized heads, solid black circle
eyes, but you can still look at it and

exactly who it is.

Everything is perfecto.

Look at me.

The gear has so much detail.

They got the tattoos right, the gear,
the boots, the kick pads.

These are so cool.

Look at those little boots. Those boots
are adorable. Look at his little cape

and the braid.

Very loft lock. It's very easy to make
them loft lock when you're someone like

Steve Austin who just has a bold head
and very simple gear.

They pay attention to detail.

They do an absolutely fantastic, dare I
say, awesome job.

My man's got a thing. I love it.

My head ain't this big, though.

The ability to collect basically
anything that you're a fan of. These are

probably some of the most collectible
things on the planet. Yeah, I'm a big

Funko Pop collector.

I think everyone's a big Funko Pop
collector.

one. These damn Funko Pops. I mean,
they're addicting, right? They're

affordable. Oh, I'll get one. I'll get
two.

Next thing you know, I have thousands.

Funko knows what they're doing. They
know what the fans want.

This is probably my favorite. Why is

I have never seen a brand like Funko
have so many licensors, which is

to be commended because there's not

The likeness is just very much, I mean,
that really does look like Ricochet. The

smirk, the necklace, the tattoos, the
vest, the pipe.

They get so many details, but, and it's
scary.

I don't even know how they do this.

Yeah, look at that quad definition.

It's beautiful.

Want that.

Collecting WWE action figures has become
a family tradition.

It never gets old to see yourself as an
action figure.

Crazy to go from playing with these as a
kid to actually having one. To have

your own.

Maybe it sounds corny, I don't know, but
things like this are like winning a

championship. I was the first person to
have an action figure as an adult and as

a kid. It's kind of cool, actually.

It's a credit to Mattel for the kind of
work they put in. It's unique for the

collectors, too.

New WWE retro figures from Mattel, so
close to the real thing!

Mattel has a retro line, which basically
pays homage to the old Hasbro action

figure line.

I love these because they're just like
the old -school wrestling figures that

you would get.

This is an old version of me, huh?

I want to see if I can make this space.

Mattel is making those, the missing
pieces to your collection. It's a

love letter to us wrestling fans and to
the Hasbro collectors out there.
