We bought it during the pandemic, and it's sort of

the same exact thing as when we moved in.

You have to understand that we had seen over

20 houses before. There's a list that I have.

Joel loved to find something wrong with the house,

and we did a lap of this house, and I said, "What do you think?"

He said, "I can't find anything wrong with it."

And that's the first time he said anything

remotely close to that. -[Jonathan] We'll take it!

[Joel] Yeah, exactly.

[CC] So it was just like, we saw it the day that it went on.

We made an offer that day.

-It was a super upgrade from where we were. -Yeah.

And now, after being here for a while, we're finding some

of the pieces that aren't really fitting

the way we thought they would.

It's just kind of fragmented, right?

Like, we want all these spaces to work together.

We want to put our design stamp in this space.

Yeah, we've been in the home since June 2020,

so we're right about five years. You look confused.

I forget, 'cause we were married in '19.

-I'm the keeper of the numbers. -I don't --

Valley Village, it's great.

It's very convenient, and it's very safe,

and it's very family-oriented, and it's just... -[CC] Yeah.

...a great neighborhood to live in.

And so we found this house. It was in the middle of COVID.

[CC] Yeah. So this was really great.

[Joel] It was deep COVID.

So if you're gonna be in prison,

this was a great prison to be. -Right.

This was a big deal because Joel has quite an eye

for finding things wrong with a house.

-And Joel has a strong no. -Yeah, I'm a big no.

I'm really no first.

And so I might be a little more flexible

in some of the options.

I can't eat without my feet on the floor.

-[Jonathan] Yeah. -[Joel] I hate the high counter.

[Jonathan] Yeah, I'm also not a fan.

-[Joel] I just hate it. -So this isn't your style?

No, it's all the previous owner.

We changed nothing.

[CC] I see you're noticing the worst part of the house.

No, this is the most comfortable part of the house.

[CC] This is kind of the nightmare that we would love to have

completely removed from the house.

[CC] Like vacated, reduced, destroyed.

We're always gonna have the nook conversation.

Anything that doesn't have a place just kind of lives

in the nook zone, and that's largely because

that's how the nook existed in the past.

And so there's some space like that that has never been

fully reimagined, and Joel hasn't been entirely willing

to reimagine the space with me. [laughs]

This is actually an ideal location for, like,

a little eat-in kitchen table.

What about doing, like a banquette over here built-in?

-You could still have your morning coffee. -[CC] Right.

If we were going to redesign this kitchen, functionally,

is everything laid out the way you like? -No.

-It's actually -- -The refrigerator is really weird, and it won't open.

Oh, 'cause the wall's right next to it?

Yeah, because there's a wall there.

You can't -- I mean, it's -- and the pantry.

The pantry is around the corner.

The previous owner said that it was going to be a bathroom.

[Joel] This wall right here did not exist.

If you get something, you have to go all the way around.

I'm starting to see now what you mean by there's definitely

some complications.

There's, you know, for entertaining,

a lot of separation. This is awkward in here.

Everything about this house, it's not ours.

We're -- it's like we're living in someone else's home.

[CC] I feel like we've never actually turned the dining room

space into a comfortable place.

[Jonathan] When we look at a space, usually the first thing I think

about is, how can we open up to the backyard more?

-You've got, you know, lots of glass, lots of light. -Well -- well...

Well, there's that.

[Drew chuckles] The fireplace is blocking things off.

I mean, to open that up, that would give you a lot more

of that connectivity. -Wouldn't that be great?

You can tell just by looking at it.

[Joel] This is what I fell in love with.

These are comfortable chairs.

And you know, comfort is a theme that we really seek.

Do you care about style and aesthetic?

-I like comfort. -Yeah, you did mention it.

[Drew] I get if you want to see other properties, but I would

definitely want to put a design together on this one.

If you're staying, how much can you spend on a renovation?

If you're moving, how much can you spend on a house?

We want to spend in the ballpark of $150,000

on a renovation.

If we're moving, we're looking to spend about $1.5 million.

[Jonathan] OK.

You don't like that?

Yeah, no, Joel does not do well

when we talk about big numbers, so...

the math is mathing.

[Joel] I've been tense about money my whole life.

I grew up in public housing in the Bronx, and it was all

concrete and bricks, very little green space.

Living there, I did not know any different.

I didn't know how poor I was.

When I went to middle school,

I went to other people's houses,

single-story houses, and I was like,

"Oh, I wanna live there."

This is a mansion to me and that kind of money is --

is -- I don't -- it doesn't compute.

As a journeyman actor, you never know where your next

paycheck is gonna be.

So when you get money, you can't really spend it.

Are you OK?

-[indistinct whisper] -OK.

What is the end goal?

-To be happy. -[Jonathan] OK.

-What will make you happy? -A nice house.

-So -- -What does it take to get a nice house?

Exactly.

-Money. -Bingo!

You don't need therapy now. You just worked through it.

So I think if we show you some other houses,

you might actually just fall in love with another house,

and that's it. You don't even

wanna deal with the renovation that would happen.

And this is a small, small area, so there aren't

that many houses on the market in general,

let alone that meet their criteria.

I also don't want Jonathan to find a better house

that they need, and then the aesthetics will be easy.

have a little friendly competition, and we'll see

who can find the better solution.

I want to see something that will give me the big wow.

There's a lot of stress in the whole process, right?

It's hard to imagine doing all the things that we're talking

There are very few houses on the market in Valley Village,

so in order to customize the footprint of your home,

we're gonna need to be creative and keep an open mind.

into them, they were always very tight.

I feel like if there's one thing we want to eliminate,

ritual space.

If we can give Joel that, but also have a way of keeping

then that would make us both happy.

I think the big feeling is, like, it feels squished.

And you have that gigantic area as you walk in

dining, living room all connected.

Because when I look at the space, I actually

will picture these walls being down

and a lot more light flowing in.

to this house, walk around a little bit more,

just check out the bedrooms and stuff,

things in your head, but I mean, I can see the way

that tearing down walls would bring in a lot of light,

and we could actually make a more logical flow,

something that kind of feels natural.

and stuff like that to see any kind of wow.

And it wasn't really a good wow.

It's so hard when a client says they only wanna be

in a small, like 10-by-10 block radius of the city.

And this is an area where it is hard to find a place that fits

all their criteria.

I think I'm clearly articulating my vision,

but I don't know if they're quite picking it up.

Which I don't think Joel's picking it up at all.

He needs to see it to understand it.

You know, I'm very happy to pass the baton to Jonathan.

He can find the next house. He can show that.

things, talk through things. Take a look and --

Cabinetry and open shelving will offer tons of storage,

and we'll repurpose the wood countertop here.

This is a lot of light tones throughout everything,

a little bit of contrast with your table and accents. -[Joel] Right.

Is this getting too clean and crisp to you?

At first glance, I mean, I really like this style.

I don't know, I think we should look

at playing with yours a little bit.

Let's get a little contrast in the kitchen just to make

something pop. -Yeah, let's pop.

OK, let's pop it like it's hot.

For the kitchen, we'll keep things contemporary

with light wood tones and clean lines.

For contrast, we'll bring in dark stool seating

for the island, along with bold light fixtures and faucet

finishes to get that pop.

Removing the fireplace and soffit is going

to give new life to this room.

Creating a wide open space that easily fits a large L-shaped

sectional with accents that blend CC's contemporary style

and Joel's love of cozy comfort.

-Yeah, yeah. -I think that'd be really nice.

Yeah, it's nice.

Was this helpful for you, talking through the different

elements of the design? -Yeah, very much.

I think it's good to find things that we can visually

reference that we both like.

But again, we have no style,

so we're relying on you to give us some.

and love it because that fireplace is gone.

And then as far as everything else over here,

we're in good shape. I feel good.

We need to figure out a paint color for all of our walls.

But we have three different colors of white.

I'm looking at all walls. I don't want this color.

I think the middle one is a warmer color.

I would say two is my choice, but I would tone it down even

a hair toward white. -I'd be good with that.

I feel like there's lots to like about what is here,

but it's never felt like it's fully functional.

[CC] You know, I think we had so much relief when we first

moved in from moving out of the townhouse.

[Joel] We moved in here and thought it was fantastic,

and it could be fantastic again.

the space flow, I feel like

[CC] I mean, there'd be nothing else to do.

But at the end of the day, it is all about just being

That's what I love.

It was -- before, for such a big open space,

it just felt so dark.

CC just wants a clean design.

He wants everything to look clean and organized so that

if guests showed up at any moment,

you don't have to do anything. It's already ready to go.

What is it they say? If you give a man a pantry,

he'll be organized for a day.

But if you teach a man to pantry,

he'll be organized for life.

Well, we definitely have two men that need to be taught

how to organize for life.

They're gonna love it, especially CC.

He's gonna love the organization. Here, put this over there.

It was such a maze to get to the pantry before,

going all the way around, having it off the laundry room.

This new layout is...

so much better.

And I think having separation

from those two spaces, too, is nice.

It just, you know, your pantry is part of the kitchen.

Your laundry room is its own domain.

And they have tons and tons of storage now.

[Drew] Isn't it great, though,

that this countertop, we were able to reuse it?

Because that would easily have just gone to waste,

but with such a nice chunk of wood.

-[Jonathan] Yeah, it also goes perfectly with this whole space. -[Drew] Mm-hmm.

When you're designing your home, it has to work

for your lifestyle. -Right.

And we also put an arm on both of these, so you can turn them

It really is amazing.

When CC first reached out, he said, "If you do nothing
