history. The notion of royalty in pro
wrestling is a long -time tradition, but

as WWE began to expand and conquer the
sports entertainment landscape, the King

concept evolved as well. So, in 1993,

the King of the Ring pay -per -view
event was passed into law via royal

a March Madness -style single
elimination tournament with the winner

coveted crown in honor that has launched
careers into higher esteem.

We welcome you to the King of the Ring
tournament, where legends have been made

and careers have been built.

The King of the Ring tournament is like
the March madness of WWE.

Superstars will compete in a tournament
with the winner being crowned the King

of the Ring.

What a battle this is. The crown at
stake.

It's only the best of the best. And
being able to know you went through this

and this guy and this guy, and now
you're the King of the Ring, nobody can

that away from you.

Think about the all -time greats over
the years that have held this crown.

Finally, there is a man in WWE with
enough class to call himself

the king.

When I ended up winning it, I was
massively elated and it was just another

there, to get the crown.

There's a lot of pride and prestige to
winning that tournament and carrying

crown. The only woman fit to be queen.

You are royal, because you've beaten all
these bishop stars, and you've climbed

to the top of the mountaintop.

In one night, I beat three guys.

that were at the top of their game to
become king of the ring.

Going from peasant to king, that's the
first step in becoming undeniable.

There's an old cliche, it's good to be
king.

Yep, it's good to be king, if just for a
while.

Although kings had been crowned before
in pro wrestling, Brett the Hitman Hart

was vying to become the very first to
win the crown via the inaugural King of

the Ring pay -per -view event.

At the time in 1993, the entire
tournament was held in just one night, a

grueling gauntlet which gave the winner
a level of prestige fit for only the

most noble of men.

It's the King of the Ring, a one -night
single elimination tournament.

Eight World Wrestling Federation
superstars compete in this event.

The only thing I can do is go straight
to the top, and the best way to do that

is to be the King of the Ring. The 1993
King of the Ring is a perfect example of

how incredible Bret Hart was as an in
-ring performer.

You're going to have to have a lot of
endurance to win three matches.

You're going to have to have a whole lot
of wrestling ability.

What a competitor!

Oh!

And the most important thing, you're
going to have to be hungry.

Razor Ramon, I'm the number one seed,
and I got you in the first round, and

just a little bit starved.

What a night it's going to be, ladies
and gentlemen!

The bell sounds, we're ready to go here.

We got him with a tremendous coastline.

Whoa! What a slam!

I love, love the old school King of the
Rings style. Like, I love multiple

matches with one night.

Not a problem, bud!

It's all about winning these matches as
quickly as possible, any way you can

finish them, so you have enough energy
to move on to your next opponent.

They already

had an iconic match

at the 91 SummerSlam. When those two got
together, it was absolute magic.

I cannot believe what just happened, and
neither can I.

From coast to coast and planet to
planet, everybody backs the Hitman.

I got some business to take care of. I
have the opportunity to be the first

of the ring. Brad to get Bam Bam was a
really exciting match. He had to

challenges from some of the best
wrestlers in the world at that time.

I can't believe the punishments that the
Hitman has suffered over the period of

three matches.

Fred the Hitman Hart always said to you,
the best there is, the best there was,

the best there ever will be. And that
night, he definitely proved it.

An excellent execution by Bret Hart that
night, overcoming three, three very

talented and different superstars in his
quest to the top of the throne.

The very next year, in 1994, Brett's
younger brother, Owen Hart, looked to

the hitman's achievement and contend for
a crown all his own. Now, you could

call it sibling rivalry, as Owen was
always determined to be recognized and

valued on his own merit.

So what better way to step out of his
brother's shadow than to rule the throne

as king of the ring?

It's hard when your big brother is Brett
Hart, and you're in that shadow, you

know, it's a hard shadow to get out of.
King of the ring was his breakout for

And now a nice reversal by the Rocket.

It gave Owen his own chance to shine.

And it also showed what a massive star
Owen could be on his own.

If there was one thing I remember from
that tournament was Owen and Kid. Those

guys had incredible chemistry.

I remember that match being really high
impact.

It's short, but if you watch it, you
wouldn't have guessed that you only

four minute match.

Owen goes all the way to the finals.

Probably hard to have a bad match with
Owen, but, I mean, Razor's no slouch.

Nice block of that hip lock attempt, but
Owen does a nice counter.

Oh, there's that speed in his bow.
There's that power.

If Razor's going to lose, you're going
to need a lot of help. No, he stuck him

up for the Razor's dead.

Oh, no, nice counter by the Rocket.

Jim Neidhart is a great friend. You got
a family member, you got a friend who's

willing to help you win King of the
Ring. No selfishness involved.

had Owen's best interest in mind.

Referee did not see any of that action
on the outside.

He's going to do it here at the King of
the Ring.

The CMD razor is very unexpected.

It's not what people would have imagined
was going to happen.

Owen was such a cocky.

Superstar, even though he had had help

started shouting, I did it!

When he embraced that crybaby villain
role, he did it so damn well.

I am the king of the ring, and I want
everybody to start giving me the respect

of a king!

He made Todd Penngale get on his knee.

Get on and salute the king.

Get on your knees.

Owen embraced being king so much and
created his own moniker. My first

proclamation as king is to be from this
day forward known as the

king of hearts. He's saying he's the
king of his own family. I love that.

Owen. King of Hearts is a badass name.

And I want you people to remember it
with respect for the King of Hearts.

Owen stepping out of the shadow of bread
by winning the King of the Ring was a

huge moment.

Out of all the King of the Rings, I
think Owen looked the flyest out of all

them. He wore the crown, he had the
scepter.

Owen actually made it look cool.

He never was a world champion, but...
That was a moment where everybody saw

and said, he should be one day. Owen was
a one -of -a -kind superstar.

You know who is the king? You're
looking, Owen.

The king of hearts.

Long live the king of hearts.

Owen absolutely reveled in his newfound
royal stature, demanding respect from

his kingdom for his majestic
achievement.

Perhaps heart.

Macho Man Randy Savage, who in 1989 got

his chance to lay claim to a proper
crown and, hear ye, hear ye, the Macho

was born.

place beside the Macho King.

In 1989, Macho Man Randy Savage beat

Duggan to get the crown.

Nothing made him more of a villain than
his coronation ceremony.

The Macho King basked in the glory and
resplendency of being the monarch,

wielding his powerful scepter against
his opponents as only he could.

However, not all King of the Ring champs
don bejeweled crowns and royal capes.

Take... the rated -R superstar Edge, who
before entering the 2001 tournament was

best known for winning tag team titles
with his partner in crime, Christian.

But after proving he was a legit singles
competitor, Edge celebrated not with a

scepter, but with a true symbol of
Canadian excellence.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to
you King Edge!

By 2001, Edge was one of the greatest
tag team wrestlers of all time.

Edge and Christian had done everything
they could possibly do together as a tag

team. The King of the Ring was really
the first moment that Edge got to have

a solo superstar.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, the King of
the Ring finals.

Kurt Angle against Edge, one -on -one.

Oh, fuck!

Edge is definitely trying to hold on to
his chances of elevating his

superstardom. Edge is going to fight
with everything he's got here.

Yes! Edge is the 2001 King of the Ring!

Winning the King of the Ring tournament
did solidify him.

That's really establishing him as one of
the top guys in the company

immediately.

As a Canadian, he didn't really wear a
crown.

He actually had a King of the Ring
trophy.

It legitimately looked like the Stanley
Cup.

That's f***ing epic.

Gotta respect that as a Canadian.

It was a fitting prize for the Canadian
king.

But as Edge skated to solo stardom, one
friendship began to freeze over.

Hey. What you doing? You know, I'm just
thinking, if the King of the Ring

brackets had been different, chances are
I'd be the King of the Ring.

Christian got a little jealous. Can you
blame him?

Dude, what are you doing?

Why are you carrying that King of the
Ring trophy around?

Just to show how proud I am of my
brother, Reg.

Christian took the victory as they did
it together, so it was his trophy as

well. Christian holding on to the King
of the Ring trophy as if he had won it,

but he didn't.

Christian carried the trophy around.

You were wondering what was happening.
Is there a little animosity brewing?

And then just like that.

Christian takes the trophy.

Oh, man.

Oh, no, no, no.

Now, this is too much.

You're not the king of the ring.

Oh, my God. We were heartbroken.

in Toronto.

This is appalling. Canadians don't act
like this.

We apologize and drink maple syrup and
eat poutine. We don't smash trophies

our best friend's head.

It provided not just a launch point for
Edge, but also for Christian as well,

which leads to the first of many, many,
many contentious moments between one of

the greatest tag teams in WWE history.
And all of that started because of King

of the Ring.

You got to get this polished up too, all
right?

As they say, the line between a jealous
friend and a nemesis is a very thin one.

But King Edge the Awesome clearly wasn't
too deterred by Christian as the win

propelled him to the Intercontinental
Championship and the United States

Championship later that same year.

After all, the King of the Ring
tournament is known as a launching pad

superstardom and dreams fulfilled.

Perhaps no one understood that better
than Xavier Woods, who had unabashedly

coveted the sovereign title and all its
promise and grandeur since he was a wee

little prince.

Ever since I was a kid, I have had my
eyes set on the King of the Ring

tournament. Titles change hands
constantly, but King of the Ring is

that you had.

It was a title that you won and you had
for at least a year or until the next

tournament occurred.

Anybody that's been following Xavier
Woods knows that he was very public

the fact that this was a goal of his.

He wanted to become the King of the
Ring.

That's always been his goal. That's all
that he's ever wanted out of this

industry. It's what he's wanted most out
of this industry was to be the King of

the Ring.

If you play your cards right while
you're king, it is a road to becoming

heavyweight champion.

Once you become king, that's the first
step in becoming undeniable.

And in 2021, that's what he did.

You look at a guy like Xavier Woods, his
pure motivation for entering the sports

entertainment industry, for training at
the age of 17, was because he watched

the King of the Ring tournament of past.

Round one of the King of the Ring
tournament, it's me and Ricochet.

I never touched him before. We have this
match. He's a former intercontinental

champion. He's honestly my favorite high
flyer that I've ever seen.

Right to the heart. Cover.

One, two, three.

Xavier Woods moves on to the second
round.

Round two, Jinder Mahal.

Former heavyweight champion. A guy who
I've seen mow through people like a hot

knife through butter.

Crown Jewel, Saudi Arabia, it's me going
up against Finn Balor, the first ever

universal champ.

Balor Club has come to Riyadh.

Finn Balor is one of the best to ever do
this. You expect Finn Balor to bring

the goods, bring a match that you will
be talking about for days, weeks, months

at a time.

This is Xavier Woods' opportunity to
make a name for himself on his own, to

a solo crowning achievement.

It might have been Xavier Woods'
greatest match, man, and probably his

accomplishment on his own.

Oh! It's night -night.

Xavier covers. It's an up, it's an up.
Oh, Pat, I'm going to kick out. My

goodness, it was about time to grab the
scepter and crown.

This is the most nervous that I've ever
been in my life for anything.

This is the culmination of damn near a
lifetime of desire.

I'm finally here.

A dream has come true for Xavier Woods!

I told you, this was my destiny!

I mean, his emotions brought him to
tears. This was truly, for Xavier Woods,

dream come true.

The new king of WWE, the new king of the
ring.

Xavier Woods becoming the king of the
ring winner was a movie in real life.

All hail King Xavier!

Hail King Woods.

Being able to have my name.

on the list of other kings, it's
something that not many people get the

to say.

After that moment, to be the first
person he sees, I'll remember that when

old and gray.

I was so, so happy for him.

I guess I never actually really believed
this would ever really happen for me.

Winning king of the ring,

It's a moment that I'll never forget.

We love to see it.

Now, while Xavier staked his claim to
the throne, the Cersei Lannister in all

us was like, why should men have all the
fun? Why should they get to do this?

You know what? Get some wildfire. Let's
burn this down.

All right. Well, maybe that's not
exactly what Zelina Vega was thinking.

nevertheless, on the very same night of
Xavier's coronation, she prepared for

her shot.

at the inaugural and long -awaited
Queen's Crown title.

The Queen's Crown tournament was pretty
much the ladies' version of the iconic

King of the Ring, where everyone is
competing in this tournament, and

there will be one winner that will be
crowned Queen of the Ring.

The WWE Universe was excited to see this
tournament come to fruition.

Liv Morgan is looking to get the crown!

It was so cool to be involved in that
part of history as the women were

continuing to even out the playing
field, do everything that the boys were

doing.

I lost to Carmella, and I really wanted
to win.

Carmella advances to the semifinals
versus Zelina Vega.

And now Zelina Vega rolling up. Carmella
shoulders down. Zelina takes advantage.

The fact that Zelina beat her, it was
kind of like, ha -ha.

Zelina advances to the finals of the
Queen's Crown Tournament in the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia.

Wow, this is everything that I've ever
dreamed of. And I feel like it was

finally all coming to a head.

History was made in the finals of this
first Queen's Crown Tournament in Saudi

Arabia as Zelina Vega took on Piper
Niven, then known as Dewdrop.

First ever Queen's Crown Tournament.
It'll be talked about forever.

Once I actually walked into the ring and
stood across from her, I remember

thinking, oh, I'm going to soak every
bit of this up.

What an opportunity that is upon us
right here.

Aesthetically, they're a complete
opposite.

Selena is maybe five foot.

Here we have a much larger athlete in
Piper Niven who is towering over Zelina

Vegas.

We have a classic David Goliath story.

Zelina off the second rope. Dewdrop with
her power catches Vegas.

Piper is an absolute powerhouse.

And Dewdrop just powering her way out of
it. And to see these two women.

battle it out with the queen's crown on
the line we get to see that unfold in

the ring the

fact

that a women's match is happening in
saudi arabia and then not only that but

it's for the queen's crown that doesn't
happen in our country there's people out

there watching There are. There are
little girls out there watching saying,

can do it, I can do it.

And on that night, Zelina Vega proved no
matter what obstacle was in front of

her, she could come out on top.

For me, it meant a lot more than I
realized at the moment because I had no

that this was going to be my life, that
I'd actually become a history maker.

And to say that I did that is still mind
-blowing to me.

Seeing her get that win, she was going
to really elevate it, set a great

standard for everybody else to try to
follow.

To see all of the men in the crowd
bowing down to me, my God, there was

like it.

There's only one first. So for the rest
of WWE history, this young woman, Zelina

Vega, will be able to call herself the
first ever queen crown tournament

You know what? I feel like the second I
put on the crown and the cape and the

setters, I feel like a whole new side of
me just came out.

Zelina did a great job setting the
standard for the first ever queen of the

ring. We are in the presence of royalty
here on Monday Night Raw.

Five foot nothing.

When she had that crown on, it looked
like she was 17 tall.

This weekend's King and Queen of the
Ring tournament will crown its 23rd King

the Ring and its second queen.

An accolade, of course, which, if
history is any indication, will serve as

true turning point in these superstars'
careers.

But when it comes to King of the Ring,
no one's destiny has been shaped more by

the event than the game Triple H.

A favorite to win the 1996 tournament,
Helmsley's aspirations would be dashed

a result of the fallout from the
infamous curtain call at Madison Square

Eventually, by paying his dues and
busting his ass, Hunter Hearst Helmsley

himself back in the mix heading into the
1997 tournament.

This time, would Triple H finally
fulfill his destiny of being the true

When we first met Hunter Hearst
Helmsley, he came out very posh, very

Hunter Hearst Helmsley was the typical
blue blood snooty. He's out there and

he's genuflecting or curtsying or
whatever.

At the time, Triple H was still finding
his way.

still climbing that ladder.

And then his career took off to a whole
new level.

Welcome to the King of the Ring!

The King of the Ring tournament was that
stepping stone for so many incredible

performers. This was an opportunity for
Triple H to finally get on the track

that he probably set out for himself
when he first debuted.

Ahmed Johnson, Hunter Hearst, Hilsley.
Let's see what Hilsley can do.

Goes up against Ahmed Johnson in the
semifinals.

And then they get to the finals against
Mankind.

Triple H and Mankind in 97 were kind of
mirroring each other's career. They were

both on the ladder climbing at almost
the same pace.

And then all of a sudden you get to this
King of the Ring match and this is kind

of the defining moment.

Hey, out of these two guys, who's going
to start taking over?

Mankind was known for putting his body
on the line and not being afraid to tear

an opponent limb from limb.

That match showed how aggressive

Triple H was ready to be.

The elements of what turns him into the
King of Kings in the game, like this is

it.

Nick Foley, he brings out a whole
different side of people. And it's

their best side. And he did it in this
King of the Ring.

Oh, look at this. Right in front of
China.

There may be nothing left of Mrs.
Foley's baby boy.

That steel chapter shattered.

And they set him up with a pedigree.

Is that enough to beat him? It is.

Triple H wins the tournament, and the
first thing he does is take the King of

the Ring crown.

He showed not only is he capable of
being the King of the

Ring, he's capable of getting down and
dirty with one of the most violent,

aggressive wrestlers in WWE history.

I don't know if we would have known the
Triple H that he eventually would become

the Hall of Famer if it wasn't for King
in the Ring.

Certainly a transformative moment for
Triple H, who is now a 14 -time WWE

World Heavyweight Champion.

And while Triple H may be the King of
King, perhaps no one embodied the true

spirit of the monarchy more.

than Mr. five -time WCW champion, Booker
T, who had an all -in approach on his

quest to become king of the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to
bear witness to the coronation of a king

with unmatched courage, prowess, and
ability.

Stand up and all hail your new king.

I didn't just get anointed king.

I became king.

We will crown a king of the ring
tonight.

Who's it going to be?

Oh, watch out!

Hooker T, he becomes king of the ring.

That's not the important part.

Yes, he's an incredible in -ring
competitor, but my God, was he hilarious

The entertainment value that came out of
King Booker is absolutely unmatched.

Bobby Lashley, think he can put one over

I don't know why he had an English

How many gladiators will I have to slay
to prove that I am the king of the

world?

But it was just so entertaining.

You gotta obey the king. The king say to
kiss his feet, you gotta kiss his feet.

Get this peasant up!

And make him tip my royal feet.

Oh, man.

I became the role. I embraced it.

But my wife, she has such a huge role in
that working.

Every powerful king needs a powerful
queen.

Queen Charmelle added so much to the
King Booker package.

King Booker, Queen Sharmell, there is
nothing more royal and elevated

than the two of them walking to the
ring. I don't think you can get any

than that.

The most powerful couple in the world of
sports entertainment.

This far into his career, after...

The supermarket brawl with Soho Steve
Austin after being a five -time world

champion and already a legendary tag
team champion. A lot of times, you don't

see people that accomplished take it to
another level. But that's exactly what

Booker T did.

This is the dawning of a new era.

Long live the king.

To me, Booker T was the greatest king of
all time because of how much he bought

into the entire...

Thank you all, my loyal subjects.

Someone who's that versatile is
obviously a great generational talent.

He cemented his legacy with that crown.

It elevated him to an entire different
level.

I want to make this role so memorable.
When people think about the King of the

Ring, first thing they're going to
remember.

This is King Booker.

No one did it better.

Booker maximized his momentum as king,
capturing the coveted world heavyweight

title later that year. His greatness was
worthy of all our praise, and I bow

down in respect to you, the exalted King
Booker. Thank you, Your Grace.

Now, our final King of the Ring winner
left no question whatsoever as to who

dominion of the throne.

In 1996, Stone Cold Steve Austin
commanded the Commonwealth with his

beatdown of Jake the Snake Robert.

But it was his way with words that would
slingshot his career and define a

legacy like no other.

The 1996 King of the Ring tournament is
extremely important to the history

of WWE.

I'm going to wrestle Jake Roberts in the
finals. One of the guys that came up to

me and he goes, hey kid, I just want you
to know, Jake Roberts, he cut a

religious -based promo on you. My soul
was purchased by the blood of the Lamb,

so how could I lose if I just go out
there and know the power above is

down and lifting me up?

So I just kind of put that together in
my head.

For lack of a better term, Jake the
Snake Roberts ran into a buzzsaw. And

buzzsaw's name was Stone Cold Steve
Austin. He didn't give a damn about your

happy ending. Stone Cold Steve Austin
was out to make a name for himself.

Stone Cold Steve Austin beats Jake the

And the thunder applied again. One, two,
and he got him.

And as Stone Cold leaves the ring, he
walks right up to the podium to get

crowned. As Jake the Snake Roberts is
being helped out of the ring.

And he says...

Austin 316 says I just whipped your ass.

To use any kind of biblical quote in
that former fashion, that was an

honest reaction.

Like, oh, God, did he just say that?

Jake the Snake is a legend. And for
Austin to not only just beat him but

disrespect him, that is such a bad guy
move, and I loved it.

As the king of the ring, I'm serving
notice to every one of the WWF

superstars. I don't give a damn what
they are. They're all on the list. And

that's Stone Cold's list. And I'm fixing
to start running through all of them.

The thing about that promo was, on the
backside of it, I knew I needed to wrap

it up. I needed to put a button on it.
And that's when I said, Steve Austin's

time has come.

And when I get the shots, you're looking
at the next WWF champion, and that's

the bottom line because Stone Cold said
so.

I want to talk about star -making
moments. I don't think there's any

-making moment in King of the Ring
history.

Now, when Stone Cold says that in the
moment, everyone's like, oh, wow, that's

really cool.

But as soon as the next night, you see
those Austin 316 signs. You see

people clamoring for a T -shirt.

It's one of those rare moments in WWE
history where we all saw and felt

something special and knew it
immediately.

This post -match promo changed the
business.

I don't say that lightly.

Like, literally, if he does not give
that Austin 316 promo, I don't know what

wrestling would be today.

awesome 360 promo, that King of the Ring
victory is the most important of all

time. And that's the bottom line because
Stone Cold said so.

Stone Cold's promo that night made him a
bona fide megastar and led professional

wrestling into a boom period that
solidified the WWE as the best in sports

entertainment. We hope you've enjoyed
