since i've come home, i've done really well

we're gonna go to work tomorrow.

Bill : Jen wants to get back to work,

but, you know, i don't want her hurting herself.

so i think it's too soon.

Bill : i'm not gonna break your wood.

this is hard to break.

the pinewood derby is an annual event for cub scouts.

you get a block of wood, you get four wheels,

a couple of nails, and you're supposed to make a car

and you get to race it.

fire?

we have to be careful.

today's the big day for the pinewood derby race.

for Will and i, this is our first time

doing something like this together,

so i'm really hoping that we do well.

are we gonna win?

yeah. me, too.

that's right.

that one, to me, looks like a princess pink.

i'm back to work full-time,

but i'm still pretty limited in my ability to do things.

so i can't go with Will to see his pinewood derby,

so Zoey and i decided to do a home spa day together.

wow. look it, her face says it all.

it's so cute.

khushbu: Zoey's so excited, huh?

i know. (both chuckle)

today, i'm taking Zoey to her bollywood class.

i'm glad to see her really excited about something.

woman: roll.

Will's pretty excited about winning a trophy,

but i don't know how we're gonna do.

Bill : Will recently joined cub scouts,

which is a pretty cool thing.

he's really taking to it,

and this weekend is the pinewood derby.

pinewood derby's a race that's put on

by the boy scouts of america

and has been for, i don't know, since the beginning of time.

and it's basically where fathers and sons

or fathers and daughters work together to build a car

to compete in a race and hopefully win.

for Will and i, this is our first time

doing something like this together,

so i'm really hoping that we do well.

see? i can't poke your eye.

that's why you're wearing them.

not because i'm gonna poke it,

but because what if a piece of wood flew into your eye?

right. there's glasses for it.

that would be bad.

Will and i have been a big fan of cars for a long time,

so, you know, this is a great project for us

to be able to work on together.

and it's a great time to do it

because Jennifer's still pretty sore.

even though she's back to work during the week,

her weekends, she's pretty much taking it easy.

so, while Jen's kind of stuck in the house,

i don't have to go too far to keep Will entertained.

plus, you know, anytime in the garage with another dude,

it's kind of cool, you know?

Bill : so, what we're gonna do is --

not yet.

it's okay.

so, we're gonna push it this way.

that's how a dude does it?

hmm. interesting.

okay.

(laughs)

let's see if it's working, what do you say?

(saw buzzing)

Bill : when you're building the car,

you're given some general guidelines

what you can and can't do,

and everybody gets to put their spin on it,

as far as aerodynamics and speed and physics

and all that fun stuff, but also style.

when i was a kid, i made a pinewood derby car.

me and my dad worked on that car,

and now i get to do it with my son,

which is actually cooler for me

than i think when i did it as a kid.

if you...

do that, it makes it smooth, right?

yeah.

so you have to keep doing that until this line --

you see that line? you see that line right there?

yeah, i got the line. you see that little line?

you have to keep doing that until that goes away.

i know.

now, i'm terrible with power tools,

but i'm not gonna start off by giving Will a saw to play with.

that's, you know, not good.

so, i figured i'd involve Will by using sandpaper.

i'll check back in a minute. okay.

you better work hard. you got to push hard on that.

all right, Will.

this is called an orbital sander.

Bill : i think the pinewood derby is focus time with your kid.

all right. yep.

(sander buzzing)

it's not, "got to get to class," or, "got to get to speech,

or an event, or a holiday," or whatever.

it's not, you know, an agenda.

you should be able to run your finger across it.

it's pretty smooth, right?

yeah. smoother than my butt.

shh. don't say that.

for now, you're gonna take a break,

but we have the body of your car

pretty much built.

so now what we're gonna do is we're gonna finish

shaping the front,

and then what are we gonna do?

paint?

that's right, we're gonna paint it.

all right, let's go inside and see what mommy's up to, okay?

we made a lot of progress today, which is a huge relief

because we're running out of time.

we only have a week left to finish the car,

and there's still tons to do.

get inside, get inside.

so, we got to work fast.

the pressure's on,

but the plus is i get to spend time with Will.

and there's really nothing better than that.

we'll come back out here in a little bit and work on it some more.

Will: come on. what do you say?

Jen: all right, Zoey, goat cheese it is, right?

Jen: today, Will has his pinewood derby,

and unfortunately, i can't go there.

i wish i could,

but my endurance is not up to snuff yet.

it's been six weeks since my hip-replacement surgery,

and i am now back to work.

and i'm in the process of, you know, trying to transition

from being on crutches to a cane and then full-weight baring,

but of course, it's still taking some time for me

to get stable on my feet and back to walking like normal.

even though i'm back to work, on the weekends,

i have to take time to rest.

so, you know, obviously, while i'm for sure

disappointed that i can't go with Will and Bill ,

Zoey and i are gonna make the most of it

and we're gonna actually have some girl time together

while Bill and Will have some boy time together.

so we're gonna do a nice, relaxing spa day together.

sadly, Zoey's a little sick, but that's okay.

we're still gonna make the most of it.

Zoey, do you know we're supposed to

get our nails done today?

do you want to try it if you feel a little better

after having some soup?

yeah?

oh, here's my good sport.

it's no fun getting sick, huh?

you haven't been sick in a long time.

(gags)

well, you're sick right now.

seeing Zoey be a little bit more quiet

tells me something is going on

because she is always a busy body,

so being sick is probably pretty hard for her

because she doesn't like to just sit still and rest.

Bill : today's the big day for the pinewood derby race.

it's coming down to the wire.

we don't have much time left to get this car ready to race,

and we got to put the finishing touches on this thing.

hopefully, we'll have it race-ready

so it Will beat the pants off of Will's friends

and we'll take home a trophy.

we have to be careful.

i hope Will enjoys cub scouts.

i hope he enjoys the camaraderie,

the discipline, respect,

all those things the scouts try to instill in your kids,

but along the way, he gets to whittle stuff,

make pointy things, and shoot rockets up in the air.

and he'll learn how to fish, he'll learn how to sew,

he'll learn how to do a bunch of things.

because i quit too early in my cub scout years,

i barely learned any of them.

see, you want to put this in here.

so now it fits a little bit better.

so, we're gonna go a little bit further down

and remove some more paint, okay?

i had to do a little makeshift bench work, so i took a 1x8

and i attached it to the bottom of a table saw.

you know, for the most part, everything that we use

in our daily lives is not made for us.

Jennifer and i think over the course of our lives,

we've had to be resourceful.

i think any person's that's put in a situation

where they want to do something enough,

they'll figure out a way.

where are your goggles?

okay.

so, the first thing we have to do

is get close to the weight that we want.

okay, you turn it on.

Will's pinewood derby car -- it's looking pretty good.

first, we cut it, then we sanded it down,

and we had to cut some more,

and then we had to adjust a little bit here and there,

and then we had to go shopping for the paint colors,

and he decided on the color scheme,

and, you know, all that stuff.

Bill : okay, so -- you like it?

mm-hmm. you like the design?

did i do exactly what you were aiming for?

mm-hmm!

well, then, we got it done.

it's your design, dude.

Jen: Zoey.

all right, Zoey, i think your soup's about ready,

but the grilled cheese is taking a little bit longer.

hmm? okay, good.

let me get a bowl out for your soup.

i hope you win, but does it matter if we win?

yes. good.

all right. no, no, it's what we want.

Jen: for Will, this is definitely his first experience

with competition.

i think he'll do well.

he's got a good head on his shoulders.

she's ultra competitive. she always has been.

well, i do have that competitive side.

go big or go home.

right.

that's pretty much my philosophy.

that's her attitude... yeah.

...towards just about everything.

(laughs)

(chuckles)

a trophy room?

yeah.

well...(chuckles)

if you win, yeah, it is.

okay, Will, our wheels are now in a spot where...

the most diligent part of this process is adding weight.

your vehicle cannot be over 5 ounces.

so, right now we're at 4.9 ounces.

mm-hmm.

now, if you exceed 5 ounces with your car,

you are disqualified from the race,

so it is very, very critical that we get this close

to 5 ounces as possible without going over.

the tricky part to it is, though,

you can't put in your final weight

until you get to the track

because they have their own scale,

and that's the scale that everybody has to use.

here's the deal --

let's pack it up and get ready for the race

and then why don't you go upstairs

and get changed into your uniform, okay?

are we gonna win?

yeah. me, too.

you know, i think for Will, this is kind of

one of those things where he's already won.

i know i have.

i think the pinewood derby

is one of those things where, you know, you see

all these fancy cars come up and you're like,

"your kid definitely did not make it,"

and my kid definitely did not make it.

but he was with me till 10:30 at night on a school night.

he was helping me with the design.

he told me where he wanted the windshield

and how far back everything should be,

and, you know, we worked on it together.

and so it's kind of a fun process

to just go through with your son.

Bill : so, we packed up all of our stuff,

brought a lot of extra tools,

just in case we need to tweak at race time, you know,

'cause, you know, you don't have a pit crew.

Zoey and i decided to do a girls' spa day together.

while i'm for sure disappointed that i can't go with Will

i can't really get around very easily yet

but unfortunately, you got sick on me.

first thing that we're gonna have a little lunch

and, you know, feed the cold.

my cooking skills are rather limited.

i really didn't spend a lot of time

learning to cook growing up, definitely didn't learn

throughout med school or residency.

you know, i want to keep it simple,

but i'm probably still gonna mess it up.

ah, this looks more like soup.

i just don't want to take the wind out of his sails.

i want him to enjoy the whole experience.

so, now's when the plastic meets the road

i don't know how we're gonna do.

i don't want to be the one that finishes last,

but, you know, there's gonna be someone that finishes last.

we just don't want to be those people.

i think that the stickers were trapping air inside,

which made it heavier.

yeah, we put in a couple.

okay, we're ready to race.

(cheers and applause)

Bill : the way the race is structured,

we first boil down who's the fastest within a pack.

after we figure out who the fastest cars are in our pack,

we race against the other pack.

here we go, for all the marbles.

david: these four cars are gonna race off,

and then we're gonna bump lanes

so that each car gets a chance in every lane.

Bill : every parent goes into this thing going,

"geez, i hope the wheels don't fall off

and this thing, you know, winds up being a dud."

technically speaking, it could have the wheels pop right off,

like, immediately and just become a piece of wood

[laughing] slowly sliding down the track.

david: on your marks, get set...

go.

the red finished.

oh, and we got a crash.

all right, that's the problem,

these guys are just stealing your speed, man, that's --

no, we're not.

Bill : since joining the scouts a few months ago,

Will's really taken to it.

he's really fitting in with this group.

he's making new friends, and these aren't friends

that he's necessarily in the same class with.

so it gives him a different person

to hang out with a little bit.

all right. here we go.

david: ...two, one.

third place.

almost. first.

Will, we went first on that one.

that's pretty cool.

Will, you came in first again.

can everybody see the scores up here?

after a bunch of races, they tallied up all the results,

and it turns out Will's car came in third place.

that's pretty darn awesome.

that means that we get to go to the finals.

and hopefully, we'll do something good.

'cause i feel like most of my life,

Zoey, in general, i think, likes to make decisions.

getting to pick her own color out

and they allow every car to race in every lane

so that everybody gets to test every lane to see how they do.

once we got to the finals, you could see that our car

was not performing quite as well.

you know, some of these kids are third-year racers,

and this is their third car.

when we have our third car, we better be smoking it

or i got to go home

and Will's gonna have to outsource this thing.

boy: now you're racing against fire.

uh-oh. good luck, Will.

Will was fine. i think i was the one

that was a little bit more, you know, ugh.

and he's got some friends here in st. pete now.

and so it's nice to see

that he's growing some roots here,

and we had a car that placed.

so not bad for, you know, our first try out.

and i'm gonna apologize now for my toes.

thank you. 'cause i had surgery,

and i'm not allowed to bend more than 90 degrees.

a lot of my surgeries, i was young,

and i was oftentimes in, like, a body cast,

like, up to here.

and my mom had a friend who was a hair stylist,

and so she would come over

and we would do, like, a perm.

back then, you know, in the '80s,

we did perms, so i had a perm.

and they would, like, set up shop,

like, on the kitchen counter,

and she'd, like, do the whole thing.

you know, help me keep up my hair.

woman: aww.

this kind of reminds me of that pampering yourself at home...

aww.

...when you can't really get out very easily.

it's funny -- all the surgeries i've had,

i've never had my nails done during recovery time.

perfect.

and do you need me to scoot back?

i mean, could i scoot all the way back...

yeah.

it makes a difference to try and do the things that make you feel

"human again," you know?

get through that recovery time.

when Will came back from pinewood derby,

he was absolutely thrilled.

he was very proud -- so proud --

and that just made me happy that he had such a good time.

he practically, you know, floated off the ground.

i know. that's how excited he was.

what was the best part about it?

so, did you guys win? what happened?

Bill : so, he got third place in the pack,

but we didn't place in the finals.

how does this work? like, does one pack win?

is it, like, a pack win, or is it, like, individual win?

it's both. so the individual wins,

and then they do the pack win for the final.

nice. so, he was in the finals.

that's awesome. he did great.

his attitude was totally upbeat.

he's starting to make friends in the scouts there,

so that's good. good.

you know, never down, never disappointed, never --

no noisy outbursts,

outside of the kissing of the trophy, which --

so, what are you doing, kissing your trophy?

(both laugh)

he earned it, though.

he was super exuberant, and, you know, he goes up there,

grabs his trophy, comes back,

and runs up to me, gives me a big, old hug.

aww.

so, he was a good winner and a good loser, right?

yeah, yeah, exactly.

good sport all around.

most importantly, though, is that you had fun.

(laughs)

Jen: while i'm for sure disappointed

that i couldn't go with Will to see his pinewood derby,

this was a great day because it's always nice to have

some one-on-one time with each of the kids.

it was a lot of fun.

most of the girls, i think, in your class

are indian, just like you,

but they might not have been born in india.

Jen: it's been over six weeks

since my hip-replacement surgery.

and starting to get back to work,

trying to get back to regular life,

and today, taking Zoey to her bollywood class,

so pretty excited about that.

one of the things that i know Zoey liked in houston

was taking dance class,

and so i thought i would just explore with her, you know,

"would you like to do indian dance?"

and so she immediately was all into doing indian dance.

from the beginning, with Will and Zoey,

while we're definitely not experts

on either of their cultures,

our main goal is to do as much as we can to help them

to learn about their culture to appreciate, love,

and respect the culture and the countries that they're from.

Jen: all right. let's go have some fun, right?

so, how was school today?

what did you learn?

Zoey is definitely growing up.

she's meeting her goals in school.

she loves school, she loves reading,

she loves to learn, so that's an asset that's gonna help her

to do very well in life.

yeah. sweet.

we got to order your outfit for the recital.

do you know what a recital is?

so, all the practice that you're doing every week

to learn your indian dance?

well, eventually, you get to dance

in front of an audience and have a show.

yeah.

oh, in your class?

you might need to say hello

and introduce yourself, say, "hi.

nice to meet you. my name's Zoey.

what's yours?"

most of the girls, i think, in your class

are indian just like you,

but they might not have been born in india.

you were born in india.

you know, Zoey is just getting older, just more inquisitive.

she's starting to put the pieces together,

and, you know, my worry, if anything,

is that we are supportive enough parents

to help them as they process and deal with the challenges

that they have been through

and understanding where they came from.

they may embrace it as, "so glad i'm here,"

and no big deal, or they may be very sad

that they're not being raised by their biological parents.

all i can do is hope that i'm, like any parent,

as supportive as possible

and raise them the best way that i can so that they're happy

with where they're at, you know, at each stage of life.

no, when we went to pick you up in india,

you were actually in a really big home

with lots of rooms for lots of kids.

not the same as a hotel.

it's kind of like a big house.

so, it's technically -- it's called a orphanage.

have you heard that word before?

so, an orphanage is a place where kids go

when they don't have moms and dads

to take care of them,

but where they all go to be together

and they're taken care of by nannies.

you okay with that?

cool.

Zoey and Will have really come a long way.

they're doing great.

i think we just feel so blessed to have kids.

i think we just love them to pieces,

and we know it was a long journey to get there.

going through surrogacy and fertility issues,

you know, there's no guarantees.

Bill : i mean, we went through a lot,

and to have those disappointments,

you know, it took its toll.

and then, thankfully in the end,

what ended up working out was the adoption process.

you know, you never know what to expect,

and, so far, i think we hit the jackpot.

so, you had lots of wonderfully loving nannies

to take care of you.

i think you had like five. (chuckles)

Zoey's so excited, huh?

i know. (chuckles)

Zoey has been taking bollywood dance classes.

i mean, i just love to see Zoey having a blast.

i love that it's, you know, sort of special to the two of us.

i was excited that we could find a bollywood dance class

for Zoey to try.

now we've been in it for about a month,

so i'm thrilled to see her in class,

and i'm looking forward to it.

i think Zoey definitely is excited

to learn more about her culture.

i think as she grows up,

hopefully, she'll continue to,

you know, have that love of where she's from,

i have no idea what she'll do.

but she'll definitely be in charge of something big.

she's going to be one of those, like, kick-ass women

that overachieves and, you know,

has fun doing it and makes people proud.

and all of these things sound very familiar

but, yeah, you know, as far as the kids go,

i think that over the past six years,

our kids have achieved so much.

they've both made some great friends with dance

and cub scouts.

they're doing well in school.

every year they get older,

they just do more amazing things,

and it's just ongoing awesomeness.

the future's bright for these guys, you know.

they can do just about anything.
