There, kiddo. You busy?

There, kiddo. You busy?

No, I'm just having a night in with Blue.

Okay. If I swing by?

Something wrong?

I wanted to drop off a box of Mom's stuff.

Mementos, photos, that sort of thing.

I thought it might be nice for you to have them.

Plus, I wanted to talk to you about something.

Yeah. Of course. Come by.

Sounds good. Bug. See you soon.

Ahh.

Dad, please, please call me back.

God, he's still not picking up.

He should be here by now.

Come on, buddy.

Dad! Dad!

You're okay.

I'm here...I'm gonna get some help. It's okay.

I need some help. I'm on a east south...south road,

and I need a I need an ambulance.

My Dad, he was...he was in a car accident.

How is he?

Paramedics got him out. They're loading him in now.

Thanks for calling.

I'm gonna go in with him. Can one of you take Blue?

I'll take him. I'll meet you at the hospital.

Skid marks from the tires.

They look odd. Maybe there was another vehicle involved.

You're right. Look here.

Burgundy paint on the bumper.

He got hit.

Maybe.

No witnesses, no cameras.

Maybe Bill just lost control of the truck.

Or maybe somebody hit him, got scared and took off.

We have to find that other car. If there is one.

This wasn't a car based on the height of that dent.

This was probably a truck or an

I'll call the boss.

I need to make a delivery first.

Let me check in once more.

Jodi?

Marlene.

Oh. Thank God.

I just got on my shift.

What are you doing here?

My Dad, he was in a car accident.

Let me go check on your Dad and see what's going on.

Thank you.

Okay. Thank you.

Do you know her?

Marlene? Yeah. She used to work with my Mom.

She's gonna go check on Dad.

Okay, good.

Hey.

How is he?

We don't know yet.

We found this in your Dad's car.

Thought you might want it.

Thanks. You guys find anything out about the accident?

I'll take it.

Nothing conclusive.

I know it's been a long night, so if you guys want to turn it i

Jodi.

Let us worry about the accident. You just worry about your Dad.

Truck's out front.

Keep us posted.

Thanks.

Superintendent King.

Sorry to just drop by,

Sheriff Al.

Not a problem. What can I do for you?

Well, the question is, what can I do for you?

Bill's one of my best friends, and I want to help.

Well, we've just gotten started. So...

nothing yet.

Look, I know that this is your investigation, but the sheriff's

department is at your disposal.

So anything that you need, You just ask and it's done.

All right?

I appreciate it. We can always count on you.

My Dad being out last night was my fault.

What do you mean?

He was bringing me this.

My Mom's stuff. I kept telling him that I didn't want to talk

about it, and he must have thought.

It wasn't that.

What?

Your Dad, he...he did want to talk about your Mom.

But he wanted to talk about her and Whispering Pines.

What are you talking about?

Jodi.

I checked on your Dad. He's gonna be okay.

He's pretty shaken up, so he'll need to stay a few days.

Thank you. Can I see him?

Not today. He's been sedated. Tomorrow.

And I promise you, I will keep an eye on him.

What were you gonna say about my mother?

There's something unexplained about her death.

It was an accident.

Let's go to your Dad's. I promise I'll explain everything.

There are a surprising number of Burgundy vehicles in this state.

We just saw Jodi. Still no word on Bill.

How's she doing?

Holding up.

Sheriff Al just stopped by.

He's giving us a full county resources,

so we should keep them in the loop.

This is gonna be tough. Any Burgundy SUV or truck from any

state, any year.

Try to narrow it down.

I was the one that found your Mom that morning.

There were things that bothered me about that day.

The way your Mom fell.

There appeared to be footprints that were brushed away at the

top of the trail. You should look at this.

This is an official police report.

Where did you get this?

I still have friends at County.

Could you have been wrong about the footprints?

I mean, sure, yes, but take a look at this.

There's details left out.

Why?

I don't know. I brought my suspicions to your Dad,

and he found this.

Your Mom was collecting newspaper

clippings from this incident at Stone Glass Lake.

And the swimmer Adam Bronson died at the lake.

He was hit by a jet ski.

They never found who did it.

A big lake, middle of the day.

No witnesses.

There was one, but she seemed to have recanted her statement.

Your Dad's talked to her, and he also got a hold of the

original 911 audio from her.

Stacey Kanter.

Actually, I have the 911 call.

I'll text it to you.

I just saw a guy get hit by a jet ski.

Stone Glass Lake.

I saw three teens.

They were on their jet skis, and they just.

Oh my God. I think the guy's dead.

So she changed her story?

Why? Did she make it up?

Or someone scared her into changing her story.

You think someone threatened her?

Your Dad was.

Someone threatened my Dad?

Someone texted him.

Back off. I just I don't think your Mom's death was...

An accident.

Thanks for calling us.

Anything for Bill.

All right, so we got damage.

No paint from Bill's truck.

I guess the driver could have cleaned off the paint right

after the accident.

Could have.

The driver?

Harold Brieda. We're holding him in the back of the vehicle.

Hi, there. You mind telling us how you got that damage to the

front of your vehicle?

You know these roads at night?

I clipped a tree a few weeks ago

Why?

Just give us a few minutes.

Who's "P"?

Your Dad hasn't been able to find that out.

Someone your Mom knew?

That could be anyone. And the number?

Disconnected.

Tyson, I'm gonna send you a number.

I need you to check it out for me.

On it.

What is the connection between my Mom's death and the

Stone Glass accident?

We haven't been able to figure that out yet.

There's pieces of the puzzle missing.

You should have told me.

I'm sorry.

Maybe we should both go home, get some rest.

Start first thing.

I'm gonna stay here and figure this out.

Okay, then let's go see Stacey.

Thank you, Mr. Brieda.

You're free to go.

Alibied out.

Yeah. His night manager confirme he was working past midnight.

He's not our guy.

Sorry. Burgundy SUV. My guys jumped on it.

We appreciate it. We're swimming upstream on this thing,

so having your department with us is a godsend.

Yeah. You bet. All right.

All right.

This is Detective Larsen, N.P.S.

Anyone home?

Is anyone here?

Hello.

Hello.

We're out of luck. She cleared out.

Hey. It's Tyson.

Tyson? He must have gotten two hours sleep.

Just got a coffee. Still going strong.

How's your Dad?

I'm gonna go and see him now.

Hey, I have a question.

Is there any way to track old 911 calls?

Sure.

Even if it's been tampered with?

What do you mean?

Well, I'm looking at the police report of the 911 call from the

witness, Stacey Kanter...

and it says it was 35 seconds,

but I heard the call. It's only 23.

I mean, it could just be a mistake.

Send over the audio file.

I'll be in the office in five.

Copy. I'll send it now.

Hey, buddy.

Hi.

Hey, kiddo.

Come on.

I'm okay.

Don't scare me like that.

Believe me, I didn't plan for any of this.

I thought I almost lost you, too

I'm not going anywhere.

This should have never happened.

You could have told me.

Mom. Stone Glass.

This is my job.

Our family.

Ryan.

I'm so sorry.

I wanted to tell you what happened. I just...

I was afraid.

Hey, you should see the other guy, right?

Oh.

We just wanted to ask your Dad a few questions about what he can

remember from last night.

There was this light in my rear view, and...

I thought someone was trying to pass me, but,

and they banged into me a couple times.

Not sure what kind of car it was.

I think they ran me off the road

After the crash, I couldn't see anything else except...

Except?

There was this big card. A piece of paper in the window.

I just got a flash of it, though.

Anything else?

I think I saw someone walking towards the truck.

I'm not sure, though.

Any idea who would want to do this?

That's all we need for now.

We'll leave you to it.

You get some rest.

Okay?

Boss.

Anything?

I was looking to see if I could catch Bill earlier, and I did.

Three different cameras caught him before the crash.

He was definitely being followed

It looks like an older Burgundy SUV. 4x4.

That narrows it down.

Too dark to get a visual on the plates or the driver.

I need you to get a message out to Meeks and Nora.

Ready when you are.

There's definitely someone out there we need to find.

And that someone may have tried to kill my Dad.

Are you ready for this? Tyson just found footage that your Dad

was being followed that night by someone in a Burgundy SUV.

We found scuff marks, with Burgu paint on your Dad's truck.

King just got off the phone with hospital security.

And absolutely no one will be allowed in your Dad's area

without first getting clearance from the sheriff's office.

Thanks, guys.

You both should know that My Dad told Ryan he

was receiving threatening text messages from an unknown sender.

He and Ryan were working on the Stone Glass Lake case where the

diver was killed. They think it' connected to my Mom's death.

And maybe your Dad's accident.

Okay. King wants us to report back to headquarters ASAP, including Ryan, so we can figure this out.

Hey. What are you doing wasting your time out here?

Should be out solving crimes.

You're my friend, Bill.

Oh, don't get all sentimental on me.

Well, it's better than me getting angry at you.

Angry? For what?

You went and spoke to Stacey, didn't you?

I told you, Bill, she is not to be trusted.

Well, you don't think that she had...

Well, I don't know what to think at the moment,

but I can tell you that her name has gone to the top of my list.

You've always been so stubborn.

What was I supposed to do?

It had to do with Claire.

If I was in your shoes, I'd have done the same thing.

But, let's focus on the positive

You're alive, and you're going to be okay.

And working with N.P.S. on this.

And I promise you, we are going to wrap this thing up.

All of it.

I know you will.

Bill and I have been working on this a while,

and we think that Whispering Pines and Stone Glass might be

connected.

Why didn't you tell us sooner?

We didn't have proof.

I got it. The 911 call.

I found the original.

Play it.

This is what we have.

I just saw a guy get hit by jet ski.

Stone Glass Lake. I saw three teens.

They were on their jet skis, and they just...

Oh my God. I think the guy's dead...

And then here is the original.

I just saw a guy get hit by a jet ski.

Stone Glass Lake. I saw three teens.

They were on their jet skis and they just left.

Then another jet ski appeared.

It was green and going too fast and hit him.

Oh my God. I think the guy's dead...

Did they ever find these teens or someone with a green jet ski?

They talk to the teens, but they didn't say anything

about a green jet ski.

And if Stacey recanted, the police never would have

looked into it.

Why would she make it up?

And if she made it up, then why was it tampered with?

And who did it?

No telling how many people had access to this audio file.

We need to tread lightly.

We need to find Stacey, confront her and get the truth.

What are our marching orders?

Meeks, I want you to stay with the hit and run. Visit the crash

site, see if we can find something we might have missed.

Jodi, visit your Dad.

Take Ryan, see if there's anything he remembers that will

help us find her. And Esposito, visit Sheriff Al.

See what he can tell us about Stone Glass.

Tyson, I'm gonna send you my Mom's phone records.

Could you look through them? I need to know what happened

leading up to her death.

Gotcha.

Your Dad and I are always getting in trouble as kids.

Who would have thought your Dad would become our Sheriff Al?

Really? Yeah.

Hey, bug.

Ricky.

Hey, Jodi.

Hey. How's Sheriff Al?

He told me about your Dad.

We were talking about how Sheriff Al would pay you to

babysit him.

I better get going.

Give you all some time together.

Good to see you.

So, we came to talk to you about Stacey Kanter.

Seems like she's taken off.

Well, that doesn't surprise me.

We found the original 911 audio.

It was tampered with.

And the group of teens had nothing to do with it.

It was someone on a green jet ski.

Did she mention a name?

I left them in the car.

I'll get it.

Oh, look what I found in the box of Mom's stuff.

Our favorite game.

We used to love playing that game.

It's Mom's diary.

Hey.

Sheriff Al.

Detective Esposito. Any updates?

Nothing we haven't sent over.

Um, I'm actually just looking for a bit of information.

Anything you need, you know that.

N.P.S. would spring for something like that.

So, what can I help you with? Thank you.

It seems Bill has been looking into an old case.

Something about Stone Glass Lake.

I guess an accident happened out there a while back.

I'm not too familiar with the details.

Yeah.

Well, that was a sad one.

A diver got hit by something, and we never did

determine what it was.

I heard it was a jet ski.

The Stacey Kanter 911 call.

I gave that to Bill.

You don't think she was there?

Oh, she was there.

But let's just say that Stacey has a very tenuous relationship

with the truth.

She said there were three teens.

Yeah, I interviewed them myself,

and they didn't see anything.

And there was no damage to their jet skis and there would have

been damage. We all know it doesn't matter what we think.

Only what we can prove.

Exactly. And I always felt in the pit of my stomach that

Stacey Kanter knew more about what happened to

Mr Bronson than she ever let on.

And that's why she recanted?

You and I both know what it means when somebody changes

their story.

Mm.

Well, it won't be easy to find out now.

Looks like Stacey skipped town.

Doesn't surprise me.

Personally, I don't think it was a jet ski.

I think it was a small boat.

But you know how these things go sometimes we

never get to the truth.

Okay. I appreciate your help.

Mhm.

See ya.

Mm.

Stacey Kanter has a sister.

What?

Just called my guy at County.

Stacey's had some run-ins with the law.

He checked old arrest records.

Turns out Stacey was once bailed out by her sister.

Maybe she knows where her sister is.

What's her name?

Monica Broyles.

I'll get Tyson to run an address.

Did you find anything at the crime scene?

Piece of the hit and run vehicle Now we just need to find a match

How'd it go with the sheriff?

He seems to think there's more to Stacey's involvement on the

lake that day.

And so do I.

But something's not adding up.

It's Jodi. Stacey Kanter has a sister,

Monica Broyles. I'll try to find her.

Text Jodi back. I need to speak to both of them.

On it.

We just need to step out for a second.

We'll be back. I'll leave Blue t keep you company.

Just you and me, buddy.

How'd it go? Any connections?

If we can find Stacey Kanter, then maybe she can tell us.

I just got something.

Stacey Kanter's sister lives in the next county.

Sending you her location.

No, Nora, you go see if you can find Stacey.

If not, see what her sister knows.

Boss, I'd like to question Stacey.

I want you to talk to your father.

See what was going on with your mother leading up to your

accident. We really need to know.

I can do it.

Meeks. You check out Bill's car.

See if there's anything that we might have forgotten. Anything

that we might have missed.

We need to treat these two cases as if they're connected.

All right. Let's get to work.

I need to know what happened that night.

Why was she out that early?

I don't know. I had a trial the next morning,

so I went to bed before her.

The last time I saw her, she was in the kitchen,

baking your favorite cookies.

She was sending you a care package.

Everyone was always so jealous of my care packages.

I told her I didn't need them.

The next morning when I got up, she was gone.

I went downstairs. I tried to look for her.

Thought maybe she'd fall asleep in front of the TV.

And then I got the call. And they found her in Whispering Pin

She always taught me the rules of the trail.

You never hike in the dark alone.

Why was she so careless?

Was it the birds?

Well, she would camp out at dawn to watch the birds in the

morning. Is that why?

Maybe. You know, your Mom would go anywhere,

anytime in the park to watch her birds.

She left us.

And I can't explain it,

but I'm so mad at her.

I didn't even get to say goodbye.

I haven't even cried for her.

Okay.

You'll grieve when you're ready.

Your mother loved you, and she knows that you loved her

You never have to doubt that.

I got a call. I just got clearance to move it.

Where are you taking it?

County impound.

Hey, I'm staked out in front of Stacey's sister's house,

but no one's home, so I'm waiting.

What's going on?

The traffic camera caught something in the front

windshield of the hit and run SUV. Correct?

Yes, about the size of a sheet of paper in the corner of the wi

And Bill saw it, too, right?

Correct.

That wasn't a sheet of paper.

It's an impound sticker.

Sorry to interrupt.

Just need to get a few vitals.

Put this under your tongue.

Your Dad sure has been popular.

It was nice to see Ricky again.

How do you know Ricky?

Everyone at the hospital does.

Kid used to be quite the daredevil.

Yeah, I remember those days.

You know, last time he was in.

Well, it was a good thing your Mom was here.

Why?

Do you know who she was with the difficult patients.

Ricky? Difficult?

Was Ricky having a hard time?

Jodi.

You don't have to give me details. Just tell me when he

was here.

Look, the only thing I can tell you is it was towards the end of

last year.

Thanks, Marlene.

Yeah.

Hey!

Wait! Stop!

N.P.S.

Excuse me.

That vehicle is evidence.

Stacey Kanter? Detective Esposito.

N.P.S.

Where were you taking it?

Scheduled for demolition.

Who would have known this particular vehicle was set for

demolition today?

Only ones I would have known are the employees.

I need to see your CCTV footage from last night into early this

morning.

I'm afraid you're running behind the race, pal.

Someone from County already got the footage.

You're kidding.

No.

Good thing I got a backup.

My man.

Originally when you called, you said that there was a green

jet ski. Why did you change your mind?

I was told it would be better for me.

By who?

Okay, but for the record,

there was a green jet ski.

It was more of a blue green.

You mean Aqua?

Yeah. And it had a kind of symbol on it.

Can you describe the symbol?

I can't really describe it, but I can draw it.

Maybe there's something in Mom's diary that might help us figure

out the accident.

I looked at the day of the accident at Stone Glass.

There was nothing in there.

Not the day of the accident, but a few weeks later.

Here. Look,

I have to help Patrick.

I'm worried about him.

This was around the same time Ricky was here.

Right. But Patrick?

Mom hated nicknames, remember?

Oh, I can't believe that we called him Ricky for so long.

But Mom didn't. She called him by his real name,

Patrick. Patrick is the "P" we'v been looking for.

Everyone called him Ricky because he was the spitting

image of his Uncle Rick.

Come on.

You need to see this.

What is it?

Jodi asked me to run her Mom's phone records leading

up to her death. Sending you a p now.

I found out who the disconnected number belongs to. It's the same

person who called Claire all night.

Call you back.

Copy.

Nora talked to Stacey and figured out that the jet ski

that killed Bronson was registered to the sheriff's

department, and Meeks called in.

They found the Burgundy SUV.

It's at the county impound.

And Jodi?

Yeah.

Tyson cracked who the disconnected cell phone

belonged to.

Patrick Buford. Right?

How'd you know?

I had some help.

Okay, well, there's something else.

Patrick called your mother multiple times that night

leading up to her fall.

I'm headed to Ricky's now.

Copy that.

He's gonna run.

Don't do it. Don't do it.

Don't do it.

Blue. Search.

Blue. Heel.

Ricky, stop! Ricky, please don't.

Don't do it!

Please!

I just want to talk to you.

I don't want to talk.

I know everything.

I know about Stone Glass.

Just tell me tell me what happened with my Mom.

Patrick.

Patrick, what are you doing here?

I can't live with it anymore.

Can't live with what?

I think you know. Or suspect it was me

who killed that diver.

I have known you all your life.

I know you didn't mean to.

Doesn't matter?

Your Dad will understand.

Don't you get it? He already knows everything.

It's too late.

It's not too late to do the right thing.

I'm about to.

No you're not.

I got you.

Don't let go!

We're slipping.

Don't worry, I have you.

Oh my God. Oh.

We all love you, Patrick.

You're gonna make it.

No...

It's no good.

We're both going over.

Oh.

You have your whole life ahead of you.

Make it count.

No.

No!

Your mother died saving my life.

It should have been me.

Don't let her death be for nothing.

She wanted you to live.

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

It's okay. It's okay, Ricky.

I should have admitted what happened.

I just didn't want to ruin my Dad's life.

She forgives you.

I know she forgives you.

Can you ever forgive me?

It's okay, I forgive you.

Hey, Jodi.

Is your Dad all right?

My Dad will pull through.

He's a fighter, you know that?

I guess I do, don't I?

So what brings you all the way out here?

We had to arrest Ricky today.

For what?

I think you already know.

Stone Glass. My Mom.

I know you tried to cover both of them up.

What are you talking about, Jodi?

You covered for Ricky by changing Stacey's 911 call.

Jodi, that's crazy.

Is it? Then how did you know to pull the impound footage?

Because I wanted to help with the investigation.

Because Bill is a friend of mine.

Stop. Do not say another word about my father.

Jodi. I don't even know what's gotten into you.

How did you know to pull the impound footage?

No one told you to do that.

All you were told is that Bill Larsen got ran off the road.

But we didn't need to tell you that, did we?

You were the one who did it.

Nice work, Detective.

So, tell me what happened.

Ricky was responsible for the accident on Stone Glass Lake.

Al covered it up.

He bribed Stacey Kanter to recant her statement,

and he changed her 911 call,

the same one he sent to you.

But Ricky couldn't handle the guilt,

so he started acting out.

Mom was trying to help.

Ricky made a few references to it,

talked about accident, but he was also irrational and

paranoid. He was clearly hiding something,

but nothing she could make sense of.

And you know, Mom, she was gonna get to the bottom

of it. The more evasive Ricky got, the more she dug in.

At some point, Mom made the connection between Ricky's

ramblings and the diver's death at Stone Glass Lake.

That's what the note, "P" knows more meant.

The night of mom's accident, Ricky decided he couldn't live

with it anymore. He called Mom and told her he wanted to tell

her everything. The one person he could trust to meet him at

Whispering Pines and to not tell anyone,

especially his Dad.

That's why she was out that night.

What she didn't know is that Ricky was planning to kill

himself after he came clean.

Mom's death was an accident.

She died saving Ricky's life.

And then Sheriff Al covered up Mom's death.

Just like Stone Glass.

And you, Dad, you were

you were getting too close for comfort.

So Al took an impounded car that he knew was scheduled to be

demolished. And he ran you off the road.

Lucky for us, he must have thought you were dead.

I can't believe it.

Al would have done anything to protect Ricky.

I understand protecting your kids.

But Mom was out there trying to protect someone.

I can't be mad at that.

I love you, kiddo.

I love you too.

Hey buddy. Hi.

I'll be okay. We're gonna be okay?

So how are you feeling? After everything?

Uh, I'm not sure yet.

That was some fine police work you did.

Without you, I would have never have known the truth about my

Mom. Thank you.

Anything.

King wanted me to tell you something.

It looks like she might have a position open in the N.P.S. Team

And it's yours if you want it.

I'd be proud to work with you.

Are you asking me to become your partner?

No. That position's been filled.

I should go. I've got a lot of paperwork.

Of course.

Jodi.

Anyone would be lucky to have you as their partner.

You were looking for something funny to say, weren't you?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Got nothing.

Me either.

I'm sorry I haven't made it out here yet, Mom.

It's been hard to face.

I'm here now.

I'm learning to enjoy the good, Mom.

I'm learning.

Mom sure liked it windy.

God's way of saying hi.

Her favorite.

Oh, buddy.
