I detected.

Had. Oh!

What is two plus two?

Incorrect

cognition assessment.

Oh, what is two plus two?

Incorrect.

You have been in a.

May experience forever.

No difficulty speaking.

No body movement detected. You.

For your own safety, please return to the medical platform.

Have,

awesome.

Well.

Well, please remember,

this muscle function has not yet been restored.

You you,

People.

Hello?

Yeah.

Read a little bit.

A little bit.

Why is there an atomic resolution scanning electron microscope?

Why do I know that?

Am I smart?

I love to please record video diary. No.

Can I speak to the person in charge?

What about the, captain?

Captain Jani GI deceased? Yeah.

We're, are the the living people,

doctor and Grace,

of manifest.

I can't be the only person here.

Right.

Pilot detected.

Oh, no, no, no, not the pilot.

Call.

Houston.

Under cont.

Operation go.

In effect, invalid operation.

That's the son.

There it is.

So what do we like?

Neptune ish.

Let's crank up the radio.

The callers current transmission.

Time to, is 11 years.

Ten months, 14 days and six hours.

No, no.

You're wrong.

I did about.

Oh. Well,

that's true for,

Science.

That's, our son.

Where is the fuel?

Wait. Oh!

We are just minutes away

from the fly by through the Petrova line near Venus.

So what can you tell us about the arc light probe?

What do we expect to find?

The image we see will be coming

from the onboard microscope.

Oh my God.

Sorry, I have to go.

So Dwayne's, physical,

and, different frequency ease.

They make different pattern better than they do.

Pat. Olivia, can you help me out?

Try going there we go.

Whoa.

Yeah.

Are they really eating the sun?

The space dots.

That is a great question.

Ray, could I be curious what your parents think about that?

I'm not sure it's you.

Come from me.

Hey, who wants to play a game of the beanbag?

Is lava.

La la la la.

Galaxy.

Olivia.

It fell through your hands.

Olivia. 186,000 miles per second.

Oh, give her a round of applause.

That's awesome.

What is the patrol line?

Pass.

You can't pass it.

Oh, la la la la la la la.

Two years ago,

a radio telescope

enthusiast named Irina Petrova.

She noticed that there was a streak of infrared light from the sun to Venus.

And that is now known as the pitcher of the line.

That's it.

That's the dots.

They think so what dots?

These dots,

they said to probe up to the Petrova line.

And this is what they found.

Are they eating the sun?

They seem to be dimming the sun.

Tiny teeny weeny little bit.

So no big world.

So it's a small world.

It's a small to medium world.

Over the next 30 years, the earth could

cool maybe 10 to 15 degrees.

So it is a big world.

I heard that all the cops die, the economy will freefall

and half the earth will die of starvation.

Well, we're all gonna die.

Yeah, you're forgetting something.

Guys, guys, that's.

If that were to happen, right?

They're gonna figure this out right now.

The best minds in the entire world

are on it.

Well, I woke up Sunday morning

with no way to hold my hand.

Didn't hurt.

Good morning, doctor Grace.

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,

so I had one more for dessert.

Then I headed back for home.

And somewhere far away, a lonely

bell was ringing.

And I go through the canyons.

Like the disappearing rings of the yesterdays.

On the Sunday

morning sun rose.

Wishing the Lord that I was stone.

Roses.

Something, a man, something to

make somebody feel alone.

And there's nothing short I.

Have this lonesome as a sound.

From the sweep and cities that walls.

Some name on coming down.

To the.

Blue. You.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Not good at jokes.

Not good of jokes. Who?

Doctor Grace.

Maybe if I stratum were to patrol the task force.

I need your help. Me. Did you write this?

Oh, I'm interested in this section here.

Page 31.

The Goldilocks zone is for idiots. Why?

Everyone is wrong about life.

That was a long time ago.

Do you remember what you wrote?

I was fired for standing by what I wrote.

You were fired for calling the leading scholar

in your field a staggering waste of carbon.

That the Unesco conference in Denmark.

You. You heard about that,

Look, I don't know what this is, but, I think,

I'm not sure that's lava.

It's not. Okay.

No one in your field wants anything to do with you

because you refused to back down from a very unpopular view,

and I can give you a chance to prove them all wrong.

That's, Kevin. No running. I'm not.

The joke's on them, because I don't even care. So

I think you do care.

You're just running away because you're scared.

No, no no no.

Do you still believe

water is unnecessary for life to evolve?

Well, there is, nothing magical about hydrogen and oxygen.

Water is required for life on Earth.

Sure, but a different planet might have completely different conditions.

I don't know why that makes me such a nut.

I need you to come with us.

Sorry I didn't catch your name. Oh,

hi, doctor Grace for Travelin Sample splashdown last night.

I want you to tell me what they are, how they work.

I am a teacher at Grover Cleveland Middle.

You have a doctorate in molecular biology, and I ride a bike to work.

And, it's not for exercise, so I'm sure there are thousands

of other people surviving on the surface of the sun.

Does that sound like a water based lifeform to you?

Sounds really dying ism.

Yeah.

Is all of this

necessary? Yes.

Please analyze the patrol sample.

Just one thing.

The entire room is filled with argon.

Just try not to rip your suit.

Am I expendable?

Is that what you want? Me?

It's not the only reason.

It's almost like you don't care if I die.

Hold on.

You have to talk about it.

The consensus here is

that it would be preferable if you did not die.

Thanks, guys.

Oh. Welcome to Earth.

Are they alive?

They're moving.

So they're alive.

They're moving? Yes, they're moving, but they're.

That could be for many reasons I.

What are they made of? It's going to take a long time.

I took like 200 years to figure out how bacteria work.

So please do it faster.

I'm just going through the whole light spectrum

here. Wow.

You're not going to believe this.

Nothing happened.

I can't see into these buggers.

Amazing.

X rays, microwaves, gamma rays, visible

light, nothing.

Oh, I've been dying to do this all day.

It's a cell.

It's a cell. Wake up! It's a bell.

It's a tiny alien cell.

A lost guy.

First contact

with life outside of the,

died.

What?

This is great news.

Now we can find out what they're made of.

You guys fired up.

Yes. Right.

Carbon

oxygen.

Hydrogen. Oh!

It's made.

Almost entirely.

Of water.

All right.

Sorry if I overreacted in there.

Just,

realizing I was wrong about the only original idea I ever had.

Yeah. What else did you learn?

To give off infrared light when they move?

Like, so much.

I don't know how they store all that energy, but,

their wavelength is exactly the pitch over frequency.

The light is how they move.

Yeah, they consume the sun's energy, and then they expel for propulsion.

They tend to scoop basically.

Why did it go to Venus?

I don't know.

Okay, we'll tell you what.

I have 347 other biologists in 21 countries mobilizing as we speak.

So thank you for your help.

I'm glad you didn't die.

Let's pack this up.

That's it.

That's it. Go talk to her. You just.

You taking all this stuff at the school?

You said there were thousands of people more qualified than you.

So I was being modest. I don't need modest.

I need people who think they're right when everyone else thinks they're wrong.

I need people who piss other people off. That's me.

Do you want to be on a project?

If you.

If you think I can help,

then just answer the question.

I want to help the world.

I left you three dots.

Just three of us.

When you killed,

I would take three.

Yes. I'll take the dots.

Get to work, doctor. Chris,

the world is counting on you.

Because.

This is Carl.

Imagine for a second that you're an interstellar microorganism.

I'm not doing that.

Why would you leave the sun and go to Venus?

Why not start it?

Are curious closer.

Maybe fresh air.

Venus's atmospheres. Mostly CO2.

Maybe that's for share them.

You don't know. Too little space.

That's like.

Hey, Carl,

do we have an expense account?

We don't.

But I do.

Some sleep, I

go back and I see

that. Commander.

In the name of the dance, what we do down Johannes was way

and everybody starts to move.

And so my.

I plan to stop the plane.

I don't know

what.

I just got to keep back on.

I got nothing but time, I gotta go, gotta get back

I see, I think you do.

You have a coupon?

We don't need a coupon for the government.

Which government?

All of it.

I mean, I'm on my own.

So this box is Venus. The box is Venus.

It's set to meet the same infrared light frequency as Venus in CO2 atmosphere.

So the dots move when you turn the lights on.

That means they're looking for CO2, thus proving the Karl hypothesis.

Second.

Sorry.

All right, all right.

You ready?

Why? You sound

the astrophysics moved off the slide,

We lost them.

What do you mean, we lost them? Go get them.

If I open the door in the light, they're going to escape.

And always and forever. At least now they're in the box.

So you just turn the lights on. It'll still be light.

It's got to be total darkness.

Okay, so just put this box in another box.

Go ahead and close it.

Door.

I can hear you.

Entering phase two.

Okay.

I'm a.

Pain report over.

There's one.

There's two.

Come on.

The third one.

That's the opposite.

The three musketeers.

Three is.

What?

What?

Are you said.

Don't not spend it like a Roman

force.

What?

We're fathers.

Carl.

No, I'm sitting down.

Stop!

Carl and I made a baby.

What?

We forgot the whole astrophysics bridge.

I don't know.

Who was up?

Behind?

No. Carl and Stretch said she was sending jet.

I thought you might like a PJ, I.

No, sir. Take this

is a long time since I've taken a pill from a stranger

without knowing what it was.

What?

Doctor grace, how was your flight?

Oh. Where are we?

The ocean?

Yes. The trip production. Can you do it at scale?

Oh, it's very, You just get a bunch of elbow shaped

pipe, put sunlight and want to choose me for a second?

Write it down.

Mom and I are light and CO2 in the other

movie. Anything else?

You know, Porter, he gave me a pill and it's still in my throat.

20 copies.

Thank you so much.

Water for your coffee. That's.

I need those or not.

Okay, so this is kind of a tough room, so don't take it personally.

Anything fancy?

I just wanted a bed and a shower. I'm good. I'm so.

I can't yes.

Thank you, thank you. You're doing great.

Everyone, this is Doctor Rylan Grace from the United States.

Please go here.

Thank you.

And he figured out how to breed Ezra Page.

How did you do it?

How long does the process take?

Does it reproduce by mitosis or my, What is the incubation period?

Come on.

Carl and I made a mini Venus out of a plywood box.

And as soon as the samples recognize the,

spectral signature of CO2, they were.

There. Like, won't.

There it is. Okay, well, there it is.

Oh, well, your experiment was crude and clumsy.

I was.

Scientists have replicated his results.

Come.

I'm sorry.

How did you. How did you see or how did you.

We estimate a long time under optimal conditions.

Doctor. Grace is right.

Oh, it is the CO2.

That's why they're going to be Venus.

You say everyone why they're going to Venus.

So that's why they're.

That's why they're going to Venus is what doctor Grace wants to say.

They're going to breed

woman.

There it is.

I really like him.

How long to make 2,000,000 kilogram.

2 million?

2 million is why?

On earth would you need that much?

Aster phage?

Nobody told you that kind of.

He has no clearance.

Doctor Grace,

stand up.

I hereby grant your top secret clearance

to all information pertaining to Project Hail Mary.

What's project deal?

Mary?

All right.

The sun is not the only star dying.

There is a clear pattern of infection.

Every star was infected by its neighbor except one

tell said.

They said that's right. 11.9 light years away.

It is uninfected, despite being well within the cluster of infected stars. Why?

Why tell him we don't know.

Which is why we decided to build a ship to go there and find out.

It's 11.9 light years away.

You can't just build an interstellar ship.

Oh yeah we can.

The ship is not really the problem.

The energy required to power the ship is the problem was the problem.

When we.

He asked her for

just the fuel provided we could make enough of it.

And for that, we need you, my friend. Me?

Oh, this little guy has store a lot of energy.

Yeah, one mistake in that much Astra fridge could vaporize California.

That's true.

Which is why, you know, live on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

And case.

I live on the boat. You do?

So you want to build it near lightspeed spaceship.

Have it travel further than any human made object has ever traveled,

and visit a star just to

see what's up.

Yeah, and then one.

There won't be enough fuel for a round trip.

So they send their findings back to Earth on probes.

And, the astronauts.

Die in space? Yes.

Space.

Any other plans?

If thought of anything else?

Anything else? You kick it around.

There are infinite possibilities for this to go wrong.

It almost certainly won't work.

It's what you Americans would call a long shot.

Hail Mary,

I get it.

The alternative is to just do nothing

and to starve and to kill each other and watch everything on this planet

go extinct, including us. So.

That's a long time to be in space.

Mostly in comas for most of it.

But is that even safe?

Nothing about this is safe.

We only need three

pilot and engineer.

And a scientist.

Commander?

Yeah.

I must have known you, but I just don't remember.

You make a funny face and literally

every picture.

You must have been very smart

and strong

and brave.

Illumina.

First, I owe you three bags of vodka.

You seem to have had a lot of friends.

This picture of you.

What looks like sneaking into the Kremlin is.

Legendary.

I wish you were still here.

I wish I wasn't on,

I wish I was.

Doing a better job.

I just,

You were both very loved.

You deserve much more than this.

I'll do my best to make sure that you don't.

You know that you didn't.

And I'll do my best.

For. Approaching city orbit.

Prepare for engine cutoff. 41.

What do you think we should talk about?

High tech.

We just don't.

It. I'm not a pilot.

What happens?

You know?

I mean, we're.

You are now orbiting towers, setting.

What?

The fudging factor.

Try the scale operation.

Let's try this guy.

Operation.

I'm so sorry.

You have a patrol.

The line.

But you're not doing. Why?

You, sir.

Cliff.

They detected.

What's a blip? Hey,

if they detected.

Nope.

Nope nope nope nope. Let's go, let's go. Mary.

No no no no no no no no.

Pilot detected.

Please engage. Restrain! Pilot detected.

Pilot detected.

Good. Not. Engage. Spin.

Just the correct.

Whoa, whoa!

Welcome to the Hail Mary.

Is it this thing?

Erratic maneuver detected.

Yeah.

Blip a detected.

What do they want?

What?

Let be detected.

What's up?

Current distance from Hail Mary is 800.

Is sending me something.

That could be a message.

Could be a bomb.

Is it a bomb?

Shields up.

There are no shields on. What the hell?

I not that wait,

wait, wait.

Miss Ted.

Well, I

guess there's egg on both our faces, Mary?

What's that? Oh.

Why is it moving

so much slower than the last one?

They think I'm dumb.

If we were going to catch it, what would we do?

Would you like to go on a spacewalk, doctor Grace?

To be careful.

Spaceman, what's on your head?

Can proceed to the airlock.

Okay. Oh,

I'll, Oh.

Yeah.

Oh, God.

Oh! Oh!

Okay, I.

Know it's,

just crazy.

Oh. Oh. Oh.

Oh. Oh.

Righty tighty,

lefty loosey.

Zen on the gas.

I think this thing's broken.

We need that equipment

to analyze the astro page ad setting right.

Price.

Most of this equipment won't work in zero gravity.

And we have a team to develop and build zero gravity versions of this equipment.

We would need. Yes. For that. And we have months.

What's the alternative?

We make gravity centrifuge.

Centrifuge.

They, use them to make butter during the Civil War.

Actually. It's fun. Fun fact.

Oh. Lab

operational.

Still zero

up is down.

Left is rioting on. Solid? Aliens are real.

I'm wrong about everything.

And everything's wrong.

Lefty tighty, righty loosey.

I mean, oh, no.

Foreign presence detected. Oh.

It's like.

Boom, boom.

You're a long way from home.

No, no.

I'm a long way from home.

Tell.

You the lefty?

The detective. The.

Name.

Oh. Is that me?

Okay, okay.

We should.

I don't understand.

You want me?

To go back in my ship?

But I just got here.

Okay.

Okay.

No, I'll talk to you

later. Bye.

What are they doing?

Mary?

I'm. Here.

It is not advised.

What if I was to help you? Sentence in the center.

Thank you.

Mary. You.

What.

Oh, my.

This is new.

Anybody home?

I like what you've done with the gravity.

I made you a ship.

With Drummond.

I only made one. I'm

not sure how many of you there are.

Oh. I. I.

Have.

No, no, no. I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

You scared me. When you.

When they.

Were.

I can't seem to see your face.

Mysterious

faces are overrated.

You like tapping,

Boom boom boom boom boom.

And boom

boom boom.

Okay.

Fine.

Okay.

You're pointing.

You're not tapping.

Sorry.

I know the president.

I don't have one of these.

I love it,

thank you.

Oh, put this on my head.

Take off my head.

Take my helmet off.

I'm gonna know it'll.

That's a big ass.

Oh! This is taking a turn.

Thank you for the what?

I hope it's not handcuffs.

Know.

I'm sorry about the whole helmet thing. It's.

Unfortunately, I need oxygen for breath, so.

Two rings of eight.

Oh two.

You little rascal.

This is oxygen.

I still don't think I can do it.

Sorry.

It's just,

No, if I'm wrong, I'm really wrong.

Oh, no.

Oh, no.

Oh! Oh!

I. It's

the patrol line.

We're here for the same reason you have a patrol.

The line. Problem two. You need to solve it.

I need to solve it.

That's why you made me this.

I'm going to take that as a yes.

We're going to save our planet.

We have to learn how to communicate.

You know, they say mass is the universal language.

I thought maybe we find out if that's true.

You see, the numbers?

Oh. Oh, you want this?

Oh. Christmas Eve, that is.

It's really hot in there. Is that ammonia?

Anyway, that's

looks at the numbers. No. Yeah.

They're on the other side. Do it again.

If you do it again and you don't let it's not back.

So don't don't don't do it. Don't do it.

Hold it like that.

And you look at.

Wow wow.

How about something else.

Look at this

clock.

We both have time. Right?

These are the hands.

And these are the numbers one, two, three.

They point to the numbers.

And if you'll notice there's numbers there.

And there's also numbers here.

Okay.

It is dark.

I got an idea.

Wait,

don't.

Yeah.

Don't go anywhere.

Stay. Oh.

Oh, yeah.

I'm Grace.

I'm going to call you Rocky.

You know, because you look like a giant rock. Oh,

I'm fine.

Echolocation.

Right. You need surfaces to see.

Try this.

You see the numbers?

It's done.

Is that good?

Jazz hands means good.

We do this.

Your version of this

is our thumbs up.

Nope.

That's thumbs down.

I don't know, we did a thumbs up.

It's close enough.

You want me to wait?

I wait, yeah, no.

I'm really, really excited to be working with you on this.

Fired up.

I'm sorry.

I'm talking so much.

Just.

I haven't been around

anyone in a long time. Oh.

What have we got here?

It's a clock.

I showed you a clock and.

You're showing me a clock.

We're, Clock rose.

Right.

I got to be honest.

I, I'm not sure I'm getting all of this.

Check this out.

I thought I might record you.

Oh, no. No, no. It's okay.

It's just a microphone. Works like they say.

Let's start with one.

What then?

No, wait wait, wait.

Sorry.

Okay. One.

And. One.

Okay.

So, I met an alien,

and we're learning to communicate through names.

Okay, let's start with you, Rocky. Oh.

Yeah.

Yeah.

My name.

Can't wait to hear.

This is Grace.

What's your word for my name?

Go ahead.

You know enough to order at restaurants.

We have about 250 words.

My atmosphere would kill him and his meat,

but I like to keep a wall up in my relationships.

Anyways, he's a mechanic.

I think he uses a metal form of xenon.

He can make anything.

Look at this.

I'm calling it Xenon Night

and if I can't understand

what he's saying, which is most of the time

he puts on a little puppet show for me and my tiny brain.

And you know what?

I don't mind it. He's kind of grown on me.

At least that grown in me, you know, which was a concern for a little while.

His son is dying, too. So

maybe we can help each other.

Recognize this?

We call it astro phage.

I mean, star eater.

Year phage on me started.

Bad bad bad bad bad bad.

But yeah.

Same.

Why are you alone?

Oh. 23.

Wow. I'm.

What happened to them?

Sorry.

How did they die?

Oh, There were three of us in

two days on the way here.

I wish I knew why.

Absolutely. Me.

Correction.

Three.

Dear.

Call the fist bump.

By the way,

what's that

fist? My bump.

No, it's fist bump.

It's not the same.

Exactly.

That Astra phage has to reach to city.

Otherwise we wouldn't see the patrol.

Oh. Do we really need this whole model?

Right.

Oh, boy.

You know, I used to have one of these in my classroom.

It was a lot simpler to set up.

Oh. What's that?

What? What?

That is a great question.

You know what?

Try this.

Why is this letter in space?

Question?

No, don't like that voice.

Cannot hear it. Really scary.

Let's try this.

Oh no no no

need, no need to think it's a good note.

Why is a schoolteacher in space?

What's so funny? Question.

Why is a school teacher in space?

I mean, it has charm, but you know, Meryl Streep,

why is the schoolteacher in space?

She can do anything.

Why is a square teacher in space?

Why is a school teacher in space?

That's the best I like.

All right, and an answer to your question.

I have no idea what I'm doing in space.

I don't remember.

It's okay.

Grace, find out when Grace go home.

I want to go to sleep.

No, I understand word

sleep.

Just, go like this.

You die, die die die die.

No no no no. Not die.

Just lay here for 29,000 seconds.

And then we wake up.

Understand?

We can call this.

Okay, here we go. The.

Good night. Sir,

I watch great sleep.

No. That's fine.

That's a little weird. The.

How are you? Good, good.

I'm not safe.

Brilliant. Must watch. Sleep.

That's really interesting. That sounds like something.

Can unpack that tomorrow.

I'm groggy.

Watch crew. How many days?

Crew.

Now wake up.

That's where you're going to be.

No, it's usually closer on your chest.

I wonder if it would work from a little further back.

But Grace won't feel comfortable and safe.

Well, I'm. And look, I'm seeing,

so many sides of you lately, and it's great.

Right now I'm seeing the underside of you.

Kind of a side sleeper.

Anyway.

Good night.

So we watch each other sleep.

Meridians don't sleep like a human does.

They seem legitimately paralyzed.

If danger comes, you can't wake up.

So survival mode.

Someone has to keep you safe.

For. My team.

I want you to meet Doctor Ryland. Grace.

He is currently the world's leading authority in astro phage biology.

Doctor Grace, these are the three astronauts

going on the mission, and they're backups for redundancy.

Yeah.

Alyokhina and Du Bois are pilot, engineer

and science officer.

It's an honor.

I'm excited to share what I've learned about astro phage and spin drives.

We have 1009 of these little engines that could on the Hail Mary.

And, Oh. So I thought, how are you?

Also were lemon juice.

You can look okay.

You're doing great.

What will come out once the mission is complete?

We have the option to end our lives on our terms.

The alternative is slow, miserable death by starvation.

I want to do lethal injection with a little bit of heroin.

I will have what she's having.

Following on from Doctor Grace's discovery, we've built

an air emitter set to the wavelength of CO2,

which attracts the extra phage to this revolver face.

The drive then rotates up with spear.

We increase the IRR.

The astrophysics, get excited, thrust the ship forward, and so on.

So on.

This is less than a gram of astro phage, and we only need a fraction of this

for this demonstration.

If you want to take a look to do what?

To melt a metric ton of metal.

I'm. Powerful stuff.

Commander Yao, I really appreciate what you all are doing.

You would do the same.

I would choose just not to go at all.

I don't have the bravery gene that you all have.

Trust me. It's not a gene.

You just need to find someone who will be brave for.

Movement detected.

Hi, Grace.

You're in a ball so rocky.

No die in great atmosphere, I come up.

Oh, you're coming up foreign detective Griffin and Rocky.

Because I have to kill asteroid together.

I keep going this way.

This room. Boring rocket.

My favorite, favorite.

Good slam.

Oh, put this down here, quick.

Amazing. Isn't it, rocket one?

It's the only technology.

Dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty.

Why, Russell?

Well, I wasn't expecting company, was I?

This room for garbage. 000.

Dirty. The lab.

This is, where the science. What?

This trade off?

Wait. Whoa! Oh. What's it?

I miss the disco ball. That makes me happy.

Rocky will be able to work from here.

We'll need much room for rock and much less space for. Great.

What is happening? Here we go. Patrol the line. We collect activated.

We study it, we go home.

We collect.

What you say we, Where I be? Great

apology.

No apology.

Apology. Rocky. Stay.

Rocky. New. Rocky. My hand is up.

We can't just show up in a space ball unannounced

and move into someone else's spaceship. Right?

There has to be boundaries. Boundaries?

We have one mission. Mission?

But we're two distinct individual individuals working on our distinct

individual parts of that mission.

Mission separate separately.

Okay, where am I?

Bedroom. Bedroom. What?

So I have a new roommate now.

Be careful back there.

Okay?

Did your wheels pretty lopsided?

Where on earth does that go? Not on Earth.

More. Hi.

Goes this way, dwarf.

All the way out of here? Yes. Out. Pointy.

Once you tell me what to do, he tells me why.

To do what he tells me how to do.

It tells me when to do it.

And then when I do it, he's like, what are you doing?

I'm just saying

you're going to get out of the ball to get into a much bigger ball. Yes.

For sleeping what you're having, you don't even use a bed. No.

You have to like hell raiser thing that you sleep.

But what do you got to be angry?

Stupid? How long since last sleep?

Don't talk to Armando. Yes?

Can I help you? You're doing this.

It's a lot of this.

And then he's like, no, I understand,

I understand, and it's like, I need a word.

You know what the word is? Bossy.

I'm like one of the villains in the Superman movie.

I just like,

trapped in hell.

Yeah.

His eating habits are.

Exotic.

They look disgust when I eat.

How do you look when you eat and look beautiful?

Show me.

Oh my God.

Oh my God.

He has incredible hairy.

You can see through walls.

Personal space is at a premium.

Who is Grace talking to? Question.

There's no way you can hear me right now.

Can't hear. Who are you talking to?

You can hear this?

Yes, Grace. Say you can hear this.

What about this? Yes.

Oh my God, look at this. Look how far we've.

That is where he is.

Hello, Grace.

He's right here. Hello, Grace. Friend.

The Grace fine sampler.

Introduction. Yes, I found the sampler.

Yes, I found the sampler.

Instructions.

He's really smart about some things.

Oh, my God, he's got a gun. Oh,

no, no, no, that's to screen in front.

And now this to that. Over here.

Now Rocky can hear scream.

Please don't point at me. Oh, point over here.

Yes. Okay, now over there, you're pointing at me again.

But his species doesn't know about things like relativity and radiation.

And the rest of the crew.

And made of ship there and here.

And where did you keep the astro food?

Fuel tanks?

Next to a rocket workshop. There.

I think the radiation is what made your crew sick.

Rack the Astra feet probably just protected you from it.

This isn't something that you could have fixed,

but I guess together we're, you know, pretty smart.

Since we're only going to be able to intersect with the patrol line

for a few seconds, we're not going to have enough time

to get a good sample to fast do a puppet show too fast.

I don't want to do the puppet show.

No. Do puppet show? No.

This is us for them. Yeah.

You know, flying alone.

The problem is,

because the solar system is constantly moving, the patrol line

is going to constantly be moving, right? Am I still doing it?

You still want it? Yes, yes.

Show time. So we're not going to have time to get the same.

No, no, no.

Use planet gravity to move with line.

You mean sort of like rest in its orbit? Yes.

I didn't think of that, I did.

We figured out a plan.

We're going to orbit the planet where astro phage breeds, collect a sample

and figure out why it's not eating Tau Ceti.

It was great talking to God.

I'm not talking anymore.

I need a break.

Break from what?

Oh, man. Forget it. This isn't going to work.

I play for 159 shows. Why?

Racing along at 162km per second.

I think we should arrive at Tau Ceti e

Rigel at Tau Ceti in 11 days.

Three hours. 1014.

Thank you. Larry. You're welcome. Just a great thank you very.

You're welcome.

And in the nothing of the brain

is welcome to Earth.

The mental health day when little Rock rock.

Look out below.

The beach is always changing.

You can go to the same spot every day.

You're always looking at a different beach when you get there.

Traveling sings all right.

And you climb, climb to the top I love you.

You so excited about us both getting to go home?

There's no harm in pretending for a little while.

Night and day.

Touch the waves. Touching the waves.

Wiping out.

Hanging.

And hey, oh,

they got the dancing and creed Apollo trained him and then Savage.

He trains Apollo's kick.

Yeah, yeah.

Oh my eyes I,

I say, either you say

I am or no, I say neither.

You say the eyes or no.

I like earth.

I'm just the fuck.

What about you, rock?

What do you miss most about home?

My maid.

Wait, what

you got to me? Yes.

I mean, not that you. I mean, I'm I'm.

What's their name? Name is.

Oh. It's beautiful.

Grace have made me question.

No, I mean, I did.

But she thought I had my head in the clouds,

and I didn't really want to live in the real world.

She was right.

Anyway, now she's with Mark.

Rocky.

Hey, Mark.

But enough about me.

You have a mate.

How long you've been together?

186.3 years.

Like the honeymoon phase? No. Understand?

That's a joke, right?

That's a long time.

We've been together a long time.

Is not enough.

Let's.

For the future.

Yeah.

I can and.

She. Gave.

Permission to come aboard, captain,

you're already aboard.

Did you get your free hat?

Yeah, I, I kind of bought them. Oh.

You don't sing, Yeah, I do,

I actually sang in a and Eastern German youth choir.

You're doing serious?

No. I'm not.

I always wanted to be.

Serious

talk too much.

It's my problem.

Like, right now I'm.

I, didn't mean to bother you.

You don't bother me.

It is such a weird party.

Is it?

Yeah. I was singing.

Everyone's so happy.

People are

hooking up, and they all know they're going to die.

Camaraderie helps them doing your job.

You know?

And so much me.

So this must be hard

having to ask everybody to.

You know.

Actually meet isn't.

Yeah.

So what do you think?

You think you're going to pull it off with the whole thing?

Yeah.

God willing.

I believe in God.

If it's the alternative. You.

Just up.

You crying?

It's a sign of the times.

Welcome to final. You.

I hope you're wearing your best clothes.

You can't ride the door

on your way to the sky.

You look pretty good down here,

but you're really good.

We've never learned.

We've been here before.

Why are we always stuck in one

from the bullet?

The bullet?

To stop your crying.

It's a sign of the time.

You can't get away from here.

We gotta get away from here.

To stop you crying.

It'll be all right if they tell me

that the end is near.

We gotta get away from here.

Oh, just stop your crying.

Have the time of the night.

Breaking through the atmosphere.

Oh, it all looks good from here.

Remember, everything will be all right.

We can meet again soon.

Somewhere far away from here.

And that is.

No, no, no 000.

I. Wish you could see this rock.

Rocky. Can't see.

Boring. What?

This is not boring.

Name of planet.

Cow city is same name as Star Plus.

Even boring.

I guess it could be a little more

evocative.

Astro phase.

Dabbler in position. Question. Yep.

Tracer. Live looking both ways.

It is time. Go.

It's time. Go.

Oh! No.

I, what is Grace doing?

Question.

I'm having a moment.

Oh. You know, back on Earth, if you discover

something, you get to name it.

You were technically the first one here.

So, yes, the name is medium.

Rough texture. Circle planet.

Okay,

well, let's medium rough texture.

Circle planet was taken, which is have back up.

Maybe go with something personal.

Personal?

What's your mates name again?

Name is.

It's okay.

Okay. I remember

need human word for rocky.

Make.

Adrian

his beautiful.

Wife.

Oh. Oh.

Found.

Well.

That's weird. Oh! Oh. What?

It's the same amount, both coming and going.

But if Astro is going to Adrian to breed,

there should be more leaving it should be double.

It doesn't make sense.

It's either not reproducing or it's not leaving the planet

for some reason.

Oh my God.

What? What?

Crazy one crazy question.

Life.

Are you.

This is not just astro phage.

It's bacteria. It's protozoa.

It's like cells on air and Earth.

What this mean question?

Well,

if there's a whole active biosphere in the patrol, the line stands to reason.

There's a whole active biosphere on Adrian, which means.

There's life on Adrian.

Oh, great.

Great. Yeah.

My life is, like, three minutes. Yeah.

Oh, shit. Oh, buddy. Oh, no.

No one is the reason for what might be the reason.

You see it?

What's the reason for what I've been drinking.

What is reason?

Oh, what life is reason?

One life on Adrian is reason.

Astra phage imbalanced.

Life on Adrian. Mate.

Astra phage type

like a predator. Yes.

That would keep the population stable.

Great.

If we bring predator home, our stars not die.

Life is reason star not die.

Why didn't you just say that

there is some kind of microbial predator on Adrian?

It'll be in the clouds where Astra phage breeds.

Czech.

Oh, the problem is, the ship wasn't built to go into the atmosphere.

If we get within five kilometers, will be ripped into a million pieces,

and then we'll burn up.

Game over, game not over.

I make chain, I make long chain.

I put collection device on end.

Oh, yeah? Yeah, five kilometers of chain. Sure.

Garbage like the strength.

Okay, you can do that? Yes.

I like fishing.

What?

That.

Oh. Oh, I

believe it

could work.

Thumbs up. Maybe.

Oh, hello.

Earth plan is like fishing.

We get very close to Adrian.

Atmosphere and lower collector into clouds with chain.

Then grace. Go on. How to reel it in.

If ship not at precise angle and speed, we die.

Example

we must fly backwards to keep proper velocity.

Even though great still have no pilot experience.

I've been practicing, haven't I?

Or no, no no.

You left or left or left in perfect. No.

Wrong routing.

Is it wrong way wrong, way wrong.

And I've got good good good bad.

No no no no no no I'm doing much much much less I like pulling it.

No it's bad.

Great rocket it all. Rocket plural.

Long are die, we die, we die.

Rocky has built predator collector.

Rocky chain.

Spooled and ready. Grace. Pilot training.

Not as good.

What think Earth.

Hello?

They can't hear you, bro.

What? We're not actually talking Earth. There's too far away.

You know, we just recorded these messages and we tell them what we learned.

And then when we're done, we'll send them all back in a pro.

Why not?

You tell them yourself when you return home.

Question.

Yeah.

This is a one way ticket for me, pal.

What?

We had enough astro fish to get here, but I don't know how to get back.

So what happens? Grace question.

Oh, I've.

I got enough food to last me

at least a couple of years, maybe a couple more if I stretch it out.

So grace die question.

You know, once, once we're done, I'm.

I'm going to die.

Why didn't you tell me?

It slipped my mind.

No, grace.

Say grace. Go home.

Listen. No. Listen.

No. Listen.

I got to meet you.

I got to do all this amazing stuff.

I'm good. I've made peace with it.

What mean? What mean? Make peace.

It means

I know I'm not going home.

I know why,

and it's okay.

Thumbs up.

No tiny thumbs up. No.

We got stars to soon.

Okay.

Grace.

Yeah.

You are.

Need word?

What word?

You need to risk self to help another, dumb

grace.

No no no.

You you.

How much Astra pays?

You need question

2,000,000kg.

I can give.

I go home six years slower.

That's too much.

Rocket watch crew die.

Could not fix

Grace.

Say grace will die.

Rocky, fix.

Grace.

Go home.

Okay.

I thought you made peace.

Question.

I didn't mean any of that.

That's just something you say.

Thank you.

You're very.

Whoa whoa whoa.

What?

What's happening?

A hug?

Oh, it's, usually not something one does by themselves.

Oh, I do the same.

Would you just get in here?

How do you know when the hug is done?

You just feel it.

Oh, are you feeling it now?

No. Oh.

Oh, okay.

Yeah.

We ran the sampler simulation again this morning.

Shapiro and Du Bois nailed it again.

Okay, what about the others?

They'll be ready.

I expect so

they have a great teacher.

Can you take a compliment, please?

No, it's an order.

Okay, okay, it's an order, I take it.

Thank you.

Good.

What do you think?

It's pretty impressive how?

Yeah.

You're.

You're good.

Three days,

Yeah.

So are you going to do for the next 20 years?

You got a plan?

Manual mode.

Activated. Go.

You. It's not a bad.

It's all good.

Time.

Go fishing. Question.

It's.

No, I never.

3000m out from signal.

Good.

Now comes the fun part.

Grace, go out on how to retrieve collector.

No fun at all. It's a joke.

Oh, humor.

Confusing.

Oh, you got to be kidding me.

What problem? Question.

It's fine. It's just.

This guy is slightly on fire.

Words of encouragement.

You can't just say words of encouragement.

Words of great encouragement.

Nope.

I feel that, yeah.

I'm not worried.

Are you worried?

Yeah.

Great.

Collector is closed.

Move. Went into position.

Okay. Oh.

How long is this supposed to take?

The collector should be here soon.

Yeah. This year.

Amazing days.

I mean.

Oh, careful.

Collector.

Important? Yep.

Altitude warning.

Oh, hurry, hurry!

Hurry, hurry! Up!

Oh, great.

Great.

Status update one.

That is that

great.

Great.

The same question.

I'm okay.

Good, good, good.

Come inside with pressure collector. Now.

Why not?

Moving question.

What?

Exterior temperature. As you.

Let's move now.

Go, go!

No. Great bad idea.

Come inside.

Be there in a minute.

No no no no. No rainfall. Die.

I can't repeat mission can try again later.

I don't think there is going to be a laser abort, abort, abort!

Grace will die.

No no no no no no no no. Oh!

Oh! Oh oh.

Oh. Okay.

I'm here.

Oh, I made the man is right.

Okay. Question.

Well, I'm not dead, so. Yes.

Oh, good good good good good.

Where is that noise coming from?

All around.

It's loud. It said fortified a bedroom.

Oh, well, it is carrying the ship a plug.

We leave now.

Question. Leave.

No statement.

How? Pressure.

Warning.

Oh, bending and big room below. Bedroom.

That's the fuel tanks for.

Oh, I that must not be happening.

Okay, okay, okay.

I mean,

let's go.

Try keep yourself together.

Very convention now. Not yet.

We need to get into orbit. It will crash.

I have an idea.

First no crash, then not close.

We'll deal.

Oh, on.

Now wait.

Now, now. Now.

Can we do it?

Why? Ship move in question.

There's a hole in it.

Hull breach.

Portside.

You 11 and 12.

Right. Oh.

What happened? Question.

The fuel is migrating.

Adrian.

Battlefield a question.

Yeah.

Jettison fuel tank, compartment 12.

Confirm. No.

Jettison port will take a left.

But check up your fuel bag.

Oh. You.

You okay?

Oh. No, no.

I got. No.

I think.

One anagram of astrophysics just isn't enough to pull the building.

The her master.

Give him one milligram per mistake.

That's a billion times the heat energy that they're prepared for.

A mystery. Mistake?

Kill my entire science team.

It doesn't matter.

We have to launch.

If we miss the orbital window, it'll set us back months.

Yeah, but if no one's trained to do the mission, it won't matter.

Casualty projections go up exponentially.

If we delay, we launch on schedule with the replacement science officer.

Okay, but.

Who? I mean, that,

I'm not an astronaut.

I don't need an astronaut.

I need an expert in astrophysics.

Mission ready? I'm not ready.

I don't have any training to pick it up.

I'm not an astronaut.

I put the not an astronaut.

I've never done anything. I've never done a space.

I can't even moonwalk.

I haven't done the whole the pool thing.

No, no, no, this is just freedom for the picture, for social media.

I'm not heroic in any way.

I get sick on the on the elevator.

A perfect there's no elevator on the ship.

I cannot do this.

You're a smart.

You'll figure it out.

This might be very hard

for you to understand, but some people are failures.

Some people don't rise to the challenge.

You've been present for every major scientific

or strategic meeting we've had on the mission.

You're missing out an important part of the mission, which is the suicide part.

Grace you'd be in. Very cool company.

If you don't go, you die anyway.

Yeah, but I die in 30 years.

With where the rest of us.

You have no immediate family.

You don't even have a dog.

So, just so I'm clear,

you're asking me right now to.

Give up my life.

I am, we all are.

Can I think about this?

You have three hours.

I may have detected.

Good morning, doctor Grace. How.

I want you to sleep. How?

But, You got to wake up.

I'm not sure what to do.

Then everything I can think of you.

I made him a heat

lamp. You.

And he left me one last message.

Oh. Yeah.

We have our predator right now.

I'm calling it. Tell me. But.

And I'm sure that when you wake up, you'll have

a lot to say about why that's a bad name.

Because it's just an amoeba from Tao said.

And we're putting Tao in front of amoeba.

But I would argue there's an elegance to that simplicity.

Let's not fight about it now.

Let's just we'll table it and we'll.

I did a test, a different atmosphere of variables

and fun fact every time I introduce nitrogen,

it died.

And I know you're thinking, well, that's terrible because that's a problem.

Because we needed to survive in the conditions of Venus.

Obviously, I had to figure out how to breed a new strain of nitrogen resistant.

Tell me. But

and guess what?

I used the breeder tanks that we made with your Zen and I.

And you know what?

Now we're just a couple

of very cool dudes with their very own strain of nitrogen resistant.

Tell me.

But really, all we have to do now is read enough to survive the trip.

And you got to wake up because I don't know

how to get your half of the tummy bird to erode.

So no pressure.

But we did make a deal.

She had a great.

Rack she do

now to me a little chance to see.

How did we find predator?

Know is. Yes.

Amaze.

Amaze. Amaze.

Rocket breeder.

Tank design job.

Now we can go home.

Statement.

We can go home

first. My bomb.

No, still not right.

I'll do good, good, good.

So what we do now?

Question.

We party.

Wow. Is special clothing for celebration.

You're making me think that I have to, But up my game.

What is this? You don't mind?

Rocky? Rugged. Good.

You go. Is good.

Oh, yeah.

It's not much.

Just a little something.

Very own laptop.

My portable earth thinking machine with all human knowledge.

And just one more thing. Yes.

What with this?

It's Earth.

So you can remember me.

Rocky can't forget.

I didn't give you anything.

You gave me everything.

But if I were to give you something.

Be pretty cool to see your ship. You.

I understand that you think I'm the right person

for this mission. But.

I can't do it.

I can't do it.

You'll find a solution.

You are my solution.

My place is in the classroom.

Stop pretending.

This is about your students.

It's so insulting. Grace.

We will lose

a quarter

of the world's population in the next 30 years.

And that assumes that the nations

of the world work together to raise food,

which they won't.

So I double the estimate.

And if you truly care about the children, or anyone else for that matter,

you get on that ship.

I understand the stakes.

I do.

But I don't have it in me.

My mind is made up.

I'm sorry, but,

He just can't talk me into it.

Sorry.

I'm not trying to talk you into anything.

I am trying to make you understand

what I'm about to do next.

Yeah. Please.

Let's make him come in.

Oh, this is mission plan with state of induced coma early.

To maximize your safety, you will be remembered as a hero.

Come on.

I have to do it, you know?

Come on.

What are you doing?

This may seem like me betraying you, but it's actually me believing in you.

Sure feels like you're teaching me.

Don't make this harder.

Please get.

Let's keep turning your body.

Sit down.

And we do it differently

now. Yeah.

It's funny.

Come. To.

Oh. No.

No. Oh.

Oh, I did do it. Oh!

Oh. Do it, oh, do it.

Don't you?

You know who you are.

Oh. You're going to do great.

Oh. Try

to think if there's anything I forgot.

Fuel tank fix.

Okay. Question. Oh, yeah. Yeah. They're working great.

Oh, good.

Happy happy.

Happy.

Well.

My friend.

Yes, friend.

Not sure what to say, so just gonna.

Grace.

No one to watch you sleep.

Yeah.

You are very brave.

Oh, I don't know about that.

You are the bravest human I have ever met.

Hey. Is joke.

I know I only meet one human and is.

You get it?

It's good joke, good joke.

All right, well.

Goodbye.

No. Understand?

Word. And,

See you later.

But I won't see you later.

I know.

Do you say goodbye back home?

We don't.

We do this.

Oh, Lord. Oh!

Hey, boy.

On air.

Hey, honey.

On the way.

Keep. Oh.

Oh, Lord. Oh!

Employee.

Honey.

Hey, honey.

Oh, I love wake you up.

Oh, oh, I

love going

my journey to earth will take four years to.

And 11 days to get up and go.

You know, here we go.

Tell me about, Oh.

Give you all those new set old

gig, one dollars of road

work for this bingo.

No new hotel Blanco

vanilla also formed.

Well,

you your home in a small key to this day.

Long breath.

Good. You.

And Tom detected.

Contamination detected.

Contaminant detected.

Contaminant detected in.

Contaminant detected.

Contaminant.

There's a leak.

From Mr.

Zenon, I

they tell me we can get through it.

Probably because we brought it in. Is in.

And I.

Breeder tanks had evolved to escape it.

I was able to stop it before.

It is on the surface on the ship.

Rocky ship is built to generate

the Tom.

Evil will already be in a few lines

and won't be able to find the leak.

Because the leak is the ship itself,

it'll be without any fuel stranded.

His life support systems will fail.

If that doesn't kill him,

the radiation sickness will.

He's looking at a long,

slow.

Painful death.

I can't do both.

I can go home.

Or I can save Rocky.

I've sent you detailed logs of all of our findings.

And enough. Tell me.

But for you to start your very own. Tell me before I.

Please.

I never have to hear you say.

I told you, sir.

Even though you were right.

The two of us right?

Ain't no when spending someone's hard

earned pay,

you could be Sunday driving,

not arriving on our way back home.

Run away home.

We're going home.

We think you. Be.

No. Baby.

You and I never

is more than the road that stretches.

The mother

home.

The two of us wearing raincoats.

Standing solo in the sun.

You and me chasing me.

But it ain't no well

on our way back home.

We're on our way home.

We're on our way home.

We're going home.

I'm here.

Buddy.

Earth.

Rocky. Rocky. Earth.

Hello, Earth, I am Rocky.

I am rocky from Erin.

I am not Rocky from movie. No, no, no, no.

I'm pretty sure they know that I left you detailed logs of all of our findings,

and I threw in a little something else just for fun.

Hopefully it all makes sense.

And if not, you're smart.

You'll figure it out.

This is doctor,

captain Ryland Grace, reporting from the Hail Mary.

As the iridium say.

Let's begin.

Stargazer.

With your ID

this morning.

Armando,

you should know.

It's a noogie.

I'm coming.

Oh, well, you always got to be so early.

Oh, yeah, I know, and I ignored you.

Oh, yeah. Hey.

Why? I thought this was a safe neighborhood.

Okay.

Armando likes the fresh air.

We talked about the water temperature a little bit.

It's amazing.

Just that he's on it at all.

Very cold.

And before it was boiling.

Is there an in-between?

Please tell the fire

elimination team that it's perfect. Now.

Oh, no.

This is. You know, I'm a sucker for the fog.

You. Oh,

yeah.

Well,

okay.

Can I think about it?

You can't. You.

No no no.

Good morning.

Class.

No. Okay, then we won't take their seats.

Wake up.

Who can tell me the speed of light?

Oh, God.
