(April 25, 2009. Night Market District, Linshan City.)

Ma'am.

- What is it? - Ma'am.

I was walking home by myself,

but...

the road to my house is really dark.

I'm scared to go alone.

Could you walk me there?

Sweetie,

it's already so dark out.

Where are your parents?

They're at home.

My house is just over there.

Alright, I'll walk you.

Here, hold my hand.

Your grilled skewers are ready.

See you.

It's a little kitty.

Look how cute it is.

Don't be scared.

Let's go.

We're almost there.

Just up ahead.

That's the building.

Go ahead.

Thank you, ma'am.

Bye!

Get in the van.

Hurry!

(Since the Linshan City Police Bureau)

(launched the special operation)

(against the abduction of women and children,)

(the police have intensified)

(Radio) (their crackdown)

(on trafficking crimes.)

(Several cases have been solved,)

(suspects arrested.) Aren't you worried?

(Fourteen people in total.)

(Multiple victims rescued...)

(Communication Starts from the Heart)

Come here.

Fafa.

Stay in the car.

Don't get out.

(Number 2) Move.

Come on!

Hurry, hurry!

Come on!

Get over here!

Well?

Looks good.

Top-quality stuff, for sure.

So, what do you think?

Quit struggling.

Feisty one, huh?

Struggle again and I'll cut your tongue out.

You hear me?

Did you hear me?

What's the problem?

Don't damage her, or she won't be worth anything.

There's nowhere to run.

Listen, just do as you're told.

Cooperate a little,

and it won't be so hard on you.

We're not hurting you.

We're helping you.

Think about it.

We're setting you up with a rich and powerful man.

If you play your cards right,

you could live the high life.

You'll never have to worry about money again.

You'll have it all.

Am I right?

Don't be ungrateful.

What are you doing? Get over here.

Come here.

You got a death wish?

I already told you!

Just cooperate and you won't suffer.

Since you won't listen,

you leave me no choice.

Fan, the buyer's almost here.

Maybe forget it?

She's too wild.

If she causes trouble, it won't be worth it.

It's hard enough finding fresh ones.

Come on, keep watch.

Don't be scared.

I'll treat you well.

It's all the same no matter who you're with, right?

Don't move!

I'll treat you right.

What are you so afraid of?

Come on.

I said! Come with me!

Let's go!

Stupid girl.

Still acting tough?

Come here!

You got a death wish?

Still acting tough?

Still acting tough?

You think you're tough?

Do you?

Do you?

Come on, talk. Say something...

It's okay. You're safe now.

Look at me.

Look at me.

You're safe now. It's over.

Come on, don't be scared.

I'll take this off for you.

Don't be afraid.

When we go out, hold my hand.

When you see a chance, run.

As soon as you're out, call the police, got it?

Don't be afraid.

Where's Bai?

Mind your own business.

Fan, that girl escaped!

Go!

Hide under the table.

Quick!

Fan!

Fan!

Run!

Hit her! Now!

Let go of me!

Let me go!

Let go!

Who told you to run?

I'll beat you to death!

Who are you, really?

(One Hour Earlier)

Jiajia, what's the situation?

Captain Han, all units are in position.

Everything looks normal.

What about Chang Rui's side?

(Linshan PGIS Application Platform) Nothing suspicious on his side either.

Did you bring it?

Just in case.

Let's move.

Is your boss here yet?

On the way.

Xiangzi.

You stay here.

She's wearing a hood.

Can't tell if it's Zhou Min.

Looks like the big fish is about to bite.

Should we move in closer?

No, wait.

Stay calm.

Wait until they start the deal.

A girl just ran out.

Yan Lei.

Take a team and intercept.

Make sure the victim is safe.

Yes, Sir.

Scream, will you?

Who are you, really?

Tell Mr. Yin,

we've got a new situation.

A girl escaped!

There's another girl inside.

Please, save her.

She says there's another girl inside.

Everyone, move in.

There's another victim inside.

(SWAT) Ensure the victim's safety.

Where's the girl?

Where's my merchandise?

Get her back, now!

That's my money!

- Cops! - It's the cops!

Freeze!

Don't move!

Stop!

- Stop! - Stop!

Back off!

Everyone, step back!

Put your guns down!

Or I'll kill her!

Who's in charge?

Ask him to come here.

Now!

Vice Director Yin.

The suspect is inside.

He's taken a hostage.

You!

Get me a car!

Full tank!

Right now!

Move!

Go. Execute Plan B.

Yes, Sir.

Rui!

Are you okay?

Don't move.

Take him away.

Go.

What just happened?

How should I know?

The car's ready for you.

Come out.

I'm warning you!

Don't play games with me!

Or I'll kill her.

All units,

put down your weapons.

Fall back.

Move.

Back up!

Back up more!

- Let go! - Don't move!

Let me go!

Let go...

The hostage...

Are you alright?

I'm fine.

I'm a police officer too.

Deng Yan, from the Provincial Bureau.

What are you doing here?

What's your name?

Where do you live?

Not talking?

I'm a police officer.

Let me take you home, okay?

Stop her!

Let go of me!

Sweetie.

Let go of me!

Sweetie.

Let me go now!

Listen to me.

We're the police.

We won't hurt you, okay?

Go with the officer first.

Take her away.

Let me go!

Be quiet!

Head down, move!

Move it!

Get them in the van!

Move.

Get in.

Did we catch the handler?

No.

What on earth happened?

I'm not sure either.

But it seems one of the victims

is from the Secretariat Division of the Provincial Bureau.

Why would someone from the Provincial Bureau be here?

No idea.

Where is she now?

Gone to give a statement.

(Linshan City Police Bureau)

(People's Republic of China - Police)

Chief Xiao.

I know I disrupted the Anti-abduction Office's operation,

but the girl was in danger.

As a police officer, I had to act.

Deng,

the safety of the people always comes first.

I trust your judgment.

Come on. Let's go to the Anti-abduction Office.

Captain Han.

What?

Deng Yan from the Provincial Bureau

is getting parachuted in as our new director.

Keep your voice down.

Close the door.

I have an announcement.

This is a decision from the committee.

Deng Yan

will be appointed Director of the Anti-abduction Office.

She previously served as a section chief in the Provincial Bureau Secretariat.

I hope everyone will cooperate with her.

She worked in an admin role,

but we're on the front lines here.

We investigate every case in person,

bit by bit, on the ground.

She's got no experience.

Working under her? That's a joke.

Deng Yan,

the Anti-abduction Office is yours now.

Then tell me,

who do you think should lead the office?

Definitely Vice Director Yin.

He has the experience, the skill, and the seniority.

He's the most qualified.

I just don't understand

what the higher-ups were thinking.

Welcome, welcome!

Welcome aboard!

Thank you.

Well...

Let's all introduce ourselves.

No need for introductions.

I've already

gotten to know all of you.

Yan Lei.

Ai Xin.

Chang Rui.

Yang Jiajia.

And Mr. Yin.

I'm new to anti-abduction work.

I'll be counting on your support.

I object to this.

Objection overruled.

Director Deng's appointment

was posted internally a week ago.

If you didn't bother to read the updates,

don't complain now.

Listen, Chang Rui,

if you have a problem, take it up with Chief Xiao.

I'm just following orders.

Understood?

Anything else?

Right, Mr. Yin.

Bring me

the old unsolved cases.

Sure.

This way.

You sit here.

I'll have the rest prepared for you.

Lei, Rui,

isn't she the victim of that raid?

That's her?

Do you know how hard

we worked on the Zhou Min case?

We built such an elaborate setup

all to catch the man behind it.

Then she came in

and ruined everything!

I just don't get it.

How could someone like her be our director?

Watch your mouth.

This isn't like you.

What do you mean?

Who are you?

Who are you?

What are you doing here?

What are you doing here?

Stop copying me.

You stop copying me.

Chang Rui.

Did you see a little girl?

About this tall?

Shh...

Wearing two braids?

Yeah.

Shh...

Here she is.

She ran over here?

Is it her?

Look.

Is it her?

That's her.

Who is she?

We brought her back during yesterday's raid.

- What's she doing here? - Let go of me!

- Let me go right now! - We couldn't find her parents.

So we had to bring her in.

Let go of me!

The welfare center?

They came to pick her up,

but when I looked away, she was gone.

Stand still.

Let go!

- Let go of me! - Come on, Fafa.

Just answer a few questions, and you can go home.

I'm not going!

Come on,

be good.

Okay?

Let's go.

You big meanie!

You'll pay for this!

(Searching for Reunion, Holding on for Love)

(Tuanyuan Restaurant)

(Help Find My Daughter)

(You've got some nerve showing up.)

You're not welcome here.

Leave.

Mr. Lin.

Please let us speak with Madam Zhang.

What for?

She was perfectly fine.

Now she's completely broken.

You came to laugh at us, didn't you?

Our Ranran was always timid.

She never wandered off on her own.

It was because of your daughter

that we lost Ranran.

It was your fault.

She's just a child.

She didn't know any better.

Exactly.

She's young. She didn't understand anything.

Mr. Lin, if you must blame someone, blame us.

We'll make amends on her behalf.

Alright, then.

Go find Ranran and bring her back.

My wife went through so much

to give birth to her.

Make amends?

How are you going to make amends?

Lin.

Madam Zhang.

Madam Zhang.

Why did you come out?

Ask them to leave.

Madam Zhang...

Get lost.

Madam Zhang.

Madam Zhang.

(Missing Person)

(Missing Person)

(Free Noodles/Rice for Those Searching for Loved Ones)

(Missing Person)

Madam Zhang.

There's a girl across the street staring over here.

I don't know who she is.

(Welcome Home)

She didn't come in.

Maybe she thought we were closed for the day.

Alright.

Let's clean up and call it a day.

Okay.

(Tuanyuan Restaurant) (Help Find My Daughter)

(Tuanyuan Restaurant)

(Missing Person: Lin Ran)

(Ranran.)

(Today is my first day in the Anti-abduction Office.)

(I finally made it.)

(It's been 24 years.)

(You've been missing for 24 years.)

(But I feel)

(closer to you than ever.)

(I've never given up.)

(And I hope you won't either.)

(I can still hear it.)

(The cicadas in the parasol trees that summer.)

(I still remember)

(your little white dress that day.)

(Time has not)

(blurred your face)

(or erased it.)

(To Lin Ran)

(In fact, your face)

(has only become clearer.)

(To Lin Ran) (Madam Zhang and I both dream)

(of the day we reunite with you.)

(Ranran, come out now. Stop hiding.)

(Ranran!)

(Name: Lin Ran)

(Ranran!)

See? You couldn't find me.

You're so good at hiding.

Come on, I'll take you somewhere else to play.

Yanyan.

Maybe let's not go?

It's getting dark,

and I haven't finished my homework yet.

Just a little longer, please?

It's my birthday today.

Oh, it's your birthday today?

Happy birthday!

I knew it was around this time.

Look, I've been saving up money

to get you a birthday present.

You love that music box, right?

I told you last year.

You still remember?

Of course I do.

Come on, let's go buy it.

Okay.

(Ice Cream)

Let's go!

Look, I'm going to beat you!

I'm winning!

Hello, Ma'am.

I want that music box.

Here you go.

Thank you.

Here's five yuan.

It went up one yuan this year.

That will be six yuan.

I don't have enough.

I'll go home and get more.

It's your birthday today.

How could I let you go get the money?

I'll go.

You're the best!

Wait for me, okay?

(Grocery)

Yanyan, wait for me.

I will!

Little girl.

You really like this music box?

It's getting late.

Why don't you take it first?

You can bring the money later.

Thank you, Ma'am.

Go on now.

Ranran!

Ranran!

Ranran!

Ranran!

Ranran!

This is all your fault!

Ranran...

My wife went through so much

just to give birth to Ranran.

Make amends?

How are you going to make amends?

Ranran...

Go find Ranran and bring her back.

(May 10, 2009. Suburbs of Linshan City.)

Spend...

How should college students...

Hey, girl.

Hey.

What is it?

Could you help me out?

Sorry, I'm in a hurry.

Look, I...

I'm not a bad guy, it's just...

I have a little sister. She's only 12 years old.

And you know, girls...

Oh, I see.

Yeah, so...

I'm really bad at picking stuff, so could you help me buy it?

Thanks.

I'd really appreciate it.

Okay.

Okay.

Eight yuan.

That one's fine.

I'll get going now.

Here's your two yuan change.

And two bottles of water.

Thank you.

No need to thank me.

It's really no trouble.

It's fine. You helped me out.

It's just one yuan. No big deal.

Keep it.

Let me help you.

Here.

Thanks.

Thank you, really.

What are you studying?

College English Level 4.

English?

Are you okay?

I'm fine.

Okay.

That stuff is hard, isn't it?

English is tough to learn, right?

(Case File) Have a look.

The Zhou Min case

still hasn't been solved.

(Case File) Another girl Zheng Weiwei, was abducted.

We've been

running this crackdown

on abductions since early April.

How many days has it been?

One month and 13 days.

And traffickers are still

bold enough to strike downtown

and harm society.

The footage is way too blurry.

But judging by how he moved,

this guy's definitely done it before.

Also,

anyone doing this kind of thing in Linshan

probably knows the others in the game.

That's a good lead.

Officer Chang Rui,

what do you think?

Me?

I just follow orders.

Alright, here's the plan. Jiajia, Mr. Yin.

Interrogate Zhao Liang.

Yan Lei, you take Hu Xifan.

You and Officer Chang Rui

go to visit the scene.

Let's split up.

Alright.

This place doesn't look like it has

any clear surveillance footage.

Great, another wasted trip.

Wasted or not, we had to come.

You know how it is. New boss, new broom.

Where?

That shop right there.

Mister.

What do you need?

Hello.

Could you recall

around 11 PM last night,

did a man and woman

come here to buy something?

What's your relationship with Zhao Liang?

Zhao Liang?

Yes, Zhao Liang.

He's the one who kidnaps people.

That's his thing.

I just...

I just connect him with some clients, that's all.

Earn a small referral fee, nothing more.

I've got nothing to do with it.

(Linshan City Detention Center) Hu Xifan.

I'm going to ask you one last time.

What's your relationship with Zhao Liang?

And

do you remember the girl

you kidnapped last night?

Pretty face.

Very pretty.

She looked

25-26 years old.

I'm telling you,

the plan was to grab

someone 13-14 years old.

The deal fell through at the last minute.

Then this dumb mule

walked right into our hands.

That face,

and that figure...

At the very least, she's premium merchandise.

We've hit the jackpot.

She's actually a police officer.

You know what it means to kidnap a officer, right?

Think hard.

This is your last chance to come clean.

No, no... I'll talk!

I...

I have a handler.

He's called...

He's called

Whiteboard.

The police already questioned me this morning.

I even gave them the surveillance footage.

We get lots of customers every day.

It was late.

Honestly, I didn't get a clear look.

Whose black car is that?

No idea.

It's been parked there for days.

How do you know?

I've been working in the shop,

and playing near it with my classmates these past few days.

Let's go.

(Linshan City Police Bureau)

According to Zhao Liang's statement,

(Zhao Liang, Bald, Trafficker/Transport) he was working under Hu Xifan.

(Hu Xifan, "Doctor") He followed all orders from Hu.

But beyond that, he claims to know nothing.

Hu Xifan, however, admitted

that Whiteboard is his handler.

(Whiteboard) Apparently, Whiteboard once said

he had a big job coming up,

one he'd handle personally.

And he prefers using

sedatives.

Well,

that matches the Zheng Weiwei case.

(Victims: Zhou Min, Zheng Weiwei)

If we can prove

that Whiteboard was involved in the Zheng Weiwei case,

then we can apply

to combine that case with Zhou Min's.

But right now, in the Zheng Weiwei case,

we don't have concrete evidence tying it

directly to Whiteboard.

And the surveillance footage is so blurry.

Hu Xifan couldn't confirm

whether he is Whiteboard or not.

(Hotel Parking Lot)

Contact the car owner.

On it.

Do you recognize this man?

Sit down.

Yes.

That's him. That's Whiteboard.

He's the ringleader.

I was just a follower.

Whatever he told us to do, we did.

So, Officer,

if I tell you everything I know,

can I...

Just answer our questions.

Sure, I'll answer your questions.

Have you seen this girl before?

I... don't remember.

Think carefully.

Take a good look.

I think

it was about a month ago.

Well...

I checked...

No, no...

Well, I...

I...

I think I saw that girl.

Then Whiteboard came and took her away.

As for where they went,

I really don't know.

According to Hu Xifan's confession,

the man who abducted Zheng Weiwei in the video was Whiteboard.

Bai Wentao.

The big fish we tried to catch last time.

(Case Connection Diagram: Whiteboard) Now it's confirmed,

Zheng Weiwei's case is also tied to Whiteboard.

So I suggest we merge the Zheng Weiwei case

with Zhou Min's.

Okay.

That means your team

needs to find Whiteboard as quickly as possible.

Based on what we know so far,

he has more than just

Zhou Min and Zheng Weiwei in his hands.

I approve of merging the two cases.

(Han Liang)

Everyone,

Captain Han has approved

merging the Zheng Weiwei and Zhou Min cases.

Whiteboard is now our primary suspect.

To catch him,

we need more evidence against him.

Mr. Yin,

go dig through older cases.

See if any tie back to Whiteboard.

Got it.

Jiajia, go through the footage,

and see if anything matches Whiteboard.

Yes.

Chang Rui, you've got a wide network.

See if you can dig up leads on Whiteboard.

Yan Lei.

Ai Xin. You two go question Zhao Liang again.

Okay.

Officer,

I don't know anything.

Whiteboard.

Do you know him well?

White...

Zhao Liang.

Hu Xifan already confessed.

Whiteboard is your handler.

If you want to redeem yourself,

you'd better come clean now.

Okay, I'll talk.

I'll talk.

It's true.

Whiteboard is my handler.

Hu and I

were just his runners.

But

I didn't deal with him much.

I don't even know his real name.

Seriously.

What else?

That little girl you brought in,

Fafa.

She calls Whiteboard "Dad".

So she must be his daughter, right?

She's always with him.

She must know a lot.

I think

you guys should question that kid.

(Linshan City Police Bureau)

According to Zhao Liang,

Fafa was adopted by Whiteboard.

So I'm thinking,

maybe through Fafa,

we can learn something about Whiteboard.

But Fafa

has lived with Whiteboard all her life.

Her personality's strange.

She even thinks we police are the bad guys.

I'm a police officer.

Let me take you home, okay?

Stop her!

Let me go!

Sweetie...

I think

it'll be really hard to get anything

out of her about Whiteboard.

But don't you all find it odd?

A trafficker like Whiteboard,

how could he legally adopt a child?

Or is the child

a relative's kid?

That's impossible.

Maybe

Fafa

was kidnapped by Whiteboard years ago.
