I've brought some of my Eastern friends with me.

The first United States
volunteer Calvary regiment,

now unofficially known as the Rough Riders,

will draw the majority of
its men from your territory.

But there will be among you a unit of men

from the Eastern states,

men of the National Guard.

They are your officers.

They will try to make you soldiers.

This regiment, in its final form,

will number 1,000 men.

That means that only a fraction of the volunteers

will be selected to remain with the Rough Riders.

The others will be transferred to other units,

or, if they're found totally unsuitable,

they will be discharged.

The question is,

how many of you are soldiers?

Gentlemen,

Within the next two weeks,

we will choose our Rough Riders.

listening to lectures on

They've lived with firearms and violence

They just might turn out to be
