by a colleague of mine from Oxford.

It's by an English writer.

What makes you think that might interest me?

It concerns penal servitude.

It's about a man who killed his wife

and died on the gallows.

That was your crime and
your sentence. Was it not?

What are you getting at?

Well, it really doesn't condemn the prisoner

as much as the prison.

Maybe that judge out to read it.

It's entitled The Ballad of Reading Gaol.

It's by Oscar Wilde.

It was inspired by his own prison term.

There are some passages in
it that are really quite moving,

if you'd care to look at it.
