our town somewhat passé.

I think you have a vibrant,
bustling town here

full of life and vigor.

Well, I have some things to do

and I'm sure the preacher
needs to settle in.

to the schoolhouse?

You know, I would like
to walk around

and see some of the town
before I settle in.

if that is okay?

Well, there isn't much
to see, but we do

have a lot of good books
to read at the general store.

Well, I'm sure I don't know.

But if Sister Elizabeth

I have a little bit of time

before school begins.
If we walk briskly,

Well, you've been here
in Red Springs

for a little while now.

And I feel it's getting

to be a very fine place.

We thought it was a fine
place before you come.

Have I done something
to offend you, Mr. McCray?

I'm sensing some tension
between us.

I don't mind you havin'
a church in our town.

I think the people
here need to hear

a good word now and again.

But you keep helpin'
those people

move up onto my land, and that
don't sit well with me.

I know where the marker

and no one has moved
on to any part of your land.

I have only been helping
people move

on the land that is across
and down from you.

I started this town.

I am the reason that it's
bustling and doing well.

Wasn't until
the likes of you come

that all these settlers
came in and outlanders

moved in on the territory.

Why do you call them
"outlanders?"

They're only looking
for a place to settle

and raise their family.

None of them fought
and pounded this earth

to make it suitable to live on.

My family did that.

We've been raising cattle
here for so many years,

I have lost count.

Now you got all these foreigners

and all kinds of folks coming
in and farmin' the land.

Raisin' sheep and all kinds
of things,

taking away from the water

and the grazing land
from my cattle!

Mr. McCray, everyone knows
you started Red Springs,

but it's doing fine on its own.

With respect to you
and your family,

no one is trying to do anything
to harm your land.

But, sir, you don't own
all the land here.

And if you don't mind,

I prefer not discussing
things anymore with you.

You come here
with your good looks

and your fancy words,
turn people all around,

changing their way of thinking.

Well, you better
watch your step.

[Elizabeth] I really enjoyed
your sermon on Sunday.

I really think that everything
is changin'

and growin' here because of you.

I talked with Sister Francis
the other day and she said

all the families are just
so happy and excited

to come here to Red Springs.

Preacher.

I have been praying
so hard, Sister Elizabeth.

I just don't understand
why Mr. McCray

is so against the new settlers
building down from his land.

That is good land
and no one owns it.

Mr. McCray.
He thinks he owns everything

and everyone in Red Springs.

His family is the reason that
the town's doing so well.

But, well, he just thinks

'cause they started everything,

that no one else can do
anything in this town!

I just want to help
him understand

that what we're doing is
building a great place here.

We have lots of wonderful
people moving into our town.

and bring in good families

to settle in and raise
their children.

of the settlers.

traveling towards Red Springs.

we just broke bread with them

and have been talking with
them for a couple of hours.

Feels like we've known them
a mighty long time, too.

It sure is nice to meet

This preacher
and Sister Elizabeth say

that you will not mind us
moving next to you.

take these fine folk over

folk and all.

when you moved us over here?

Red Springs anyhow.

They looked like they hadn't
eaten anything in a while.

of these folks away.

'Cause soon, we gon' be too
close to McCray land.

And I think this just
might be that time.

These people respect you,
the town people and all.

If Mr. McCray wasn't so afraid

of Miss Elizabeth hatin' him

he would've moved against
you long ago.

That man got plenty
of power around these parts.

what happened to my family

and me when we came here?

anybody, no matter what color.

My family was dirt poor.

We were considered outcasts

just 'cause we didn't
have money,

breeding or education
to fit in Boston's society.

money and breeding.

But you ain't a Negro.
You a white man.

Many a Negro been lynched
by white folks

just for being alive.

I ain't never lived under
a white man's protection.

of the prodigal son?

about a young man

who's bored with his life.
He's livin' with his father

and wants to go out on his own,

have fun and make his
own way in the world.

and he went on his way.

his money on riotous living

and found himself
eating with pigs.

- [Elizabeth] Wow.

I'm so impressed.

Well, I guess you had

What was the outcome
of the story? Preacher?

Oh, I can speak now?
I thought I was being replaced.

[all chuckling]

Well, the prodigal son
came to his senses

and he realized he could
be eating better

at his father's table.

He decided to come home
to his family.

But wasn't there a problem?

I mean, wasn't his brother
upset about him returnin'?

Yeah, he couldn't believe
that after all

his brother had done wrong,
that his father

would just take him
back like that.

He felt like he should receive
some punishment or something.

Yes, but his father said his son

who had stayed with him,
had the chance

to know the life of the Lord,
and that they should rejoice

because his brother, who had
gone away and done wrong,

was lost, but now he was found.

So, they should rejoice
because God had saved

his brother,
who was lost in sin.

Well, Sister Elizabeth is right.

And they had a tremendous
feast to celebrate

the return of the lost son
and put the ring on his finger.

There is a message in this story

and it is that of forgiveness.

Well, let's end

are spendin' a lot

about how this territory
