If you’re a
security officer that's

had multiple times,
a stowaway on your ship,

nations would not really
like to take you in,

or would be really hesitant.

We as an organization
could be blacklisted.

It's very likely for us
to have stowaways.

We have a lot of people
that come through our ship.

So patients and visitors
have been on our ship

and could potentially know
where to hide.

Before we sail, we go
and do the stowaway search.

So we do that before the sail.

Just on the day of sail.

And the day after sail.

Because of that, we

and just give the patients

My name is Anouck Lehmann,
and I am the Operations

Director on board the Africa Mercy.

I'm from Switzerland.

As Operations Director,
I'm responsible

for six departments
on board the ship.

They are the Academy,
Information Services,

Finance, Supplies, Stewards,

and Transport and Maintenance.

I'm also responsible for

the communication to the crew
when something happens.

And what I'm good at, it's
when we have a crisis management

and reacting to, okay,

something is happening.
We have to take action.

We have to make a decision.

that we were supposed to have?

- Yeah, at the Hope Center?

So I just got off the phone
with Denise, and unfortunately,

we can't have it
at the Hope Center.

And so we have 48 hours
to figure out...

Who is expecting to attend?

We were hoping to
really bring everyone.

For the first time,
we did amazing.

There's a lot of heart
that was put into it.

So we see that, still
almost 50% of the stowaways

if we look at the whole global,
that go on ships to try to get

to a new nation is to be found
in West African nations.

And that's actually
where we serve right now.

So this is something
we need to take very serious.

We live
on a ship and work on a ship.

It's not highly likely

that you might fall in the water,

but the possibility
is definitely there.

My name is John Rolland.

I'm from Waynesville, North Carolina,

and I'm an infection preventionist

on the Global Mercy.

Today, we've come
to the new Brookfield Hotel pool

to help John’s day crew

who don't know how to swim,
learn to swim.

It's such an important life skill.

We've wanted to do this
now for a little while.

I don't know that
we’ll accomplish that in a day

but we’ll, let's see what--
how far we can get today.

My wife, Jenny and I,
spent about three years

on the Africa Mercy
from 2008 to 2011.

And we've been here on the
Global Mercy since December.

I work in infection prevention,

I manage three day crew.

So the three of them do
a lot of hand hygiene,

hand washing, monitoring.

And we do monthly
audits in the galley,

dining room, and different areas
of the hospital.

And we also respond
to any kinds of outbreaks

that there might be on the ship
or at the Hope Center.

If patients get sick, then they can't have
their surgeries on time.

The day crew that work with me,
I want to take care of them.

You know, I want to make sure
they're okay.

And they have so many challenges
here in this country.

Anything that I can sort of
leave with them, it would be helpful

in some way.

For hours I've been like
dreaming about this

all night I was excited
to come and swim today.

So like, I'm happy to have
a great boss to teach me to swim.

This is what we want
to do next, ready?

Oh no... oh no.

There you go. Yeah.

Being able to float
is pretty important.

So we're going to see

if we can get them
to have that comfort level

with being in the water.

Breathe in...

We're in the middle of trying
to get Kumba to float.

We're having
a little bit of trouble.

I can feel the tenseness
in her body as she's floating.

So we're going to work on having
her loosen up and just relax.

Maryam is doing pretty well.

She's kind of catching on fairly quickly.

Yeah, I think Kumba’s--
Kumba's getting it.

She's learning
how to float a little by little.

She's getting there.

Try to do some
kicking exercises

and see if we can get them

moving forward
a little better in the water.

Yeah. And then this is--
when you're swimming,

- Yeah.
- So we came here.

We do everything perfect.

I think relationships
are the key.

And, it's no different
whether they're relationships,

you know, between us and other
crew members or between,

you know, us

Kickboxing gives

guard with you in your team

that's going to help you

in the best system
to communicate towards us

so we can send extra support
to your location,

when you find someone.

It's very important
to talk about the reasons

why someone would be on board
that the person

might be really scared
or really want to stay here.

So please take right away
distance and say

that you're in a safe place.
We're not here to harm you.

We have food and water
to take care of you.

We're not gonna harm you.

We can get you some food
and some water.

- Yeah, Dil found them,

I didn't find them.

Well, this is a serious crime, gentlemen.

What we just did
was a stowaway search.

This is one of the things we do
in a planning before voyage.

And super important,
because this ship is so large

and there's so many spaces
where people could hide,

but also materials
could be hidden.

So we really need to take
really attention to detail

when we go through it.

We look at the statistics.

So we see that, still,

almost 50% of the stowaways,
if we look at the whole global,

that go on ships
to try to get to a new nation

is to be found
in West African nations.

And so and that's actually
where we serve right now.

So this is something
we need to take very serious.

And why it's so important
is that if we go at sea

and we would have
someone with us illegally,

we would kind of be stuck.

We have to wait
in international waters

to solve the matter before
we can go to the next nation.

It would for sure, uh... havoc

our big planning that we have.

We need to be ready in time
for the next field service.

We make promises to the
nations we're going to.

So it's better to prevent than to cure,

what the doctors say.

That's also in this case.

We really need
to just be careful

and be diligent
in the front part,

so we prevent this
from happening.

And this particular one
went very well.

And it's also, an extra
motivation for people to

search well, when we
use our Academy kids

that want to come
along and hide.

It's definitely kind of bittersweet.

Obviously, there's a lot we're excited

about for the future,
but it's also been

an amazing experience here.

And yeah, I feel like
I've learned a lot about myself.

I've met so many people
from all over the world.

I feel like I have

someone I can stay with in
whatever country I go at, so

lots of travel
for me in the future.

I'm really glad that I was able
to come to Mercy Ships.

I know, like the work
we do, impacts

the lives of so many,
not just the patients.

All the crew
who come and work here

are also definitely impacted.

I mean, you can see it alone in the fact
that most people come here

for only a few months

and they end up
wanting to come back instantly.

But yeah, it's been a really
an amazing experience.

And it's kind of like hard to believe
that it's coming to an end.

So I'm just packing up some
of our equipment,

so that it will be all secured for sail.

So that way
when the ship leaves,

nothing will be moving around
and it won't be damaged.

The Global Mercy is getting
ready to sail to Tenerife,

where it will have a maintenance period,

and I am going to Sweden
with Anton,

and the two of us are going to
be getting married this summer.

When I'm done with work today,

Me and Breanna,
have been invited

to a double date dinner
with Renier and Evilin,

which is really great.

They've been married

for a long time,
and me and Breanna are engaged, so

it'll be a good opportunity
for us to gain some wisdom.

Mr. Min, his life,

his family and his children
to be able to study.

So after his retirement
in the army,

he went to work on ships and
