When I first came here,
I was only here for five months,

so I wasn't really interested in

some long distance relationship
or anything like that.

sides of the world, and it's

our friendship for anything.

there was interest on my part,

but I didn't really think there

He was immediately like, yeah,
I think it's a good idea.

When it was so obvious
that we liked each other,

we thought, well, whatever

challenges we face,
we'll just make it work.

So during during the sail,
we decided to start dating. So.

I'm already getting a lot
more comfortable, I think.

I feel like it was really cool

I'm from the U.S.

and I'm the math teacher

on the Africa Mercy.

I had heard of Mercy Ships before.

Like, this hospital ship
that goes to Africa.

And so I was really just only thinking of
it being something that

medical professionals could do.

But when I checked
the needed positions

and teaching was on there,
I was like, what?

I can do that.

The mission
is in line with my faith

and my values of giving to people that
on this side of heaven

will probably never be able
to give back to you.

And then I found a Mercy Shipper
who was showing the academy,

and I was like, oh, it's literally

a real school in this, like,
floating town.

That sounds like my flavor.
I love adventure.

Most of the junior high,
high school

teachers are a mentor
teacher as well.

And so that means that I'm
checking up,

particularly on the grade sixes.

When they have a problem,

I try to be their
go-to adult in the academy.

How do you get from 8 to 40?

My name is Beth

and I'm a kindergarten teacher
here on board the Africa Mercy.

Gabrielle and I are planning a event.

I love bringing people together

and Beth loves
bringing people together.

theme could be like all things
Malagasy, like dancing.

where we can kind of learn and
then, like, all do it together.

a tour of the Hope Center,

hoping we can have our big event there.

and I'm Hope Center

facilitator on the Africa Mercy.

The Hope Center is an outpatient
facility on the island

that provides a safe place
for patients and caregivers

to stay while waiting for
or recovering from procedures.

- How many people can be here?
- 264.

- Oh my gosh.
- Yeah.

It frees up bed
space on the ship,

which allows for more surgeries.

So this is a typical
patient room.

Caregiver, patient, would share
the same bunk.

This is the dining room.

And the kitchen over there is
where the catering cooks.

While on the tour, I asked
if we could have our big event

there and Denise said yes.

So Gabrielle
and I are planning an event,

and we want there to be music
and food and dancing

and all sorts of fun stuff.

We would really love to have

some Malagasy music at this event.

Hey, I just had a really cool

at the Hope Center.

The bad news, however,
is that because of that,

One of the operating
room nurses

asked if I could recreate
some surgical instruments.

It's a very important
piece of equipment.

If we don't have that,
we can't provide the best

surgical care for these
orthopedic patients.

Yeva, do you remember,

- being in Min's house?
- Yes, I do.

So one of my team members
is actually going to retire

soon is Mr. Min Gurung.

So Min Gurung has served
on many cruise ships

over his time after he retired
from his military career.

So it's just remarkable
in itself that a person

has worked in the military
for 20 plus years

and has money to build his house

and then goes again
into the world to provide

finances for their children,
to have an education.

And I've been able to travel
to Nepal with my family

to see their cultures
and what they really value.

And when I go into their homes,
they always have a

like a glass closet
with all their trophies.

It's super important to them
to just show the

the milestones in their lives.

Okay.

Let's talk about the plan, yeah?

We're building
a token of appreciation

with the with the wooden shield.

Showing, actually, that he has shielded
our mission for all this time.

And then having on top of that
3D printed, image of the ship.

So he really, like,

holds this ship as a protection
in, in his service.

And then,
we have some place left

for maybe a, a plate
with a text or something else.

We have to think about that.

So let's first,
get the piece of wood done.

Let's look for it.

So on the ship,
we can go to the carpentry,

now and then to just wind down and do
something for yourself.

And I find that a really nice
time to go there with my son.

that's a good one to start with

So we'll use this time
also in this specific case

to build something for Mr. Min
and do that together.

So first tune the machine.

So we need to make sure that
this is as high as the wood.

And always when you're using it

push through the blades.

that we really like,

For me, mostly it's just the
time to connect with Yeva.

And ask how he's doing
and how things are, really are,

which you usually don't

really get the opportunity to,
in the busyness of the day.

So recently,
one of the operating room nurses

came with some

surgical instruments and asked
if I could recreate some.

Yeah, we're good.

I'm Jenny Rolland,
and I am from North Carolina.

I am the O.R.

manager on the Global Mercy.

It's kind of hard to describe
what I do.

A lot of what I do is connecting
questions with answers.

I've asked George
to make some new bone

separators for the O.R...

It's a very important
piece of equipment.

If we don't have that,
then we can't provide

the best solution
to, surgical care.

So it's very important.

And what we do for these
orthopedic patients, especially.

One of the surgeons that comes

to do the orthopedic surgeries,

he had in his own workshop

made the first set of tools.

The idea with the tools
is that they support the bones

during the orthopedic surgery
so that they can properly

cut or break
or whatever they need to do

without damaging any of the
tissue around the bones.

The original set that
he brought

and left on the ship

was just
some stainless steel plate

that was cut
and bent into a certain shape.

They were really wanting

more of those so that they had
more options during surgeries.

And for both ships.

And since they only
had one set

they were hoping that I could recreate
that set and make three more sets.

I think that, because I've been here long
enough, a lot of the O.R.

team, I've worked with them
on various projects.

They've seen the work
that I can do.

They're confident
that I can pull this off.

I'm not sure yet.

We'll have to see how it goes.

So I started with stainless
steel plates.

Cut out the pieces.

So we've got it
cut to length, rounded off.

Next,
we'll take it to the sander,

smooth out the edges,

and then we'll figure out
a way to bend it.

I had to keep everything from
getting scratched and nicked

so that there were no places
where bacteria could hide.

And then we had to bend

and polish everything
into the right shape.

Outside of typical
carpentry work,

anything that doesn't really fit
into plumbing, engineering

or electrical work
also falls on carpentry.

I've learned a lot, and I've
definitely come to appreciate

working with metal.

I'm a Day Crew Team Lead,

at the Deck department

on board Africa Mercy.

I start as a day crew
at the Hope Center.

There are two types of crew.

Day crew wear red uniforms and
are short-term local workers.

While the regular crew in blue
uniforms are

full-time international
volunteers living onboard.

But to me, there is no difference
between crew, and day crew.

Without day crew,
the ship can’t run.

It's like a family for me

because they are brothers
and sisters

who are helping each other's
every day,

with every situation.

My name is Mino, Josoa.

I'm from Toamasina.

My position on the ship
is on marine deck.

I'm part of the day crew.

And I'm hoping to be crew, one day.

As a former day
crew, it can be scary.

I had a lot of fear
approaching the ship crew.

I'm not going to wait for them

to come to me,
but I will go to them,

make them relax so that they can
feel comfortable with people,

especially on board.

I like helping day crew
and seeing them grow.

Many move up and become
full-time ship crew,

which makes me proud.

I like deck department.

Yes, in the community

we do tend to want to continue
to serve God again,

again and the ship serves God.

When I met Josua, we hit it off.

We both love playing soccer.

Soccer is very popular
with all the crew.

So last year we had a game.
Day crew versus ship crew.

Ship crew won.

We were not ready at the time, but this
time we will be able to fight you.
