Connor and Sebastian worked
really, really hard on the frames,

so I feel like it's a gift
from all three of us to her.

Yeah, also this wedding,

in this story, sort of is like
the pinnacle point of it.

She's really comfortable
with how she feels.

Before she's always avoiding
being photographed.

And so to have, like a
printed photo of her, like,

so that she could, like, commemorate
this sort of moment forever

where she lost the tumor and
she's very happy with the way

she looks and also celebrate in front of,
like, her entire community...

Yeah. I think it's a really
strong moment.

And so I'm glad I captured it
for her, and I hope she

would treasure this forever.

But the Africa Mercy
feels like home for me

because it's where I started.

The rooms are smaller,

but the dining room and midships,
it just feels cozy and feels...

feels like coming home.

My job on the Africa Mercy is
the same as it

was on the Global Mercy.

So I am an anesthesiologist

and I'm also the
Chief Medical Officer.

So part of the protocol
means that we need to translate

all of our consent forms
from French into Malagasy.

You're a doctor, right?

So you're the perfect person
to kind of make sure that

we translate it as well as we can

so that the patients can understand.

You start the day with a plan

of the things that you
want to achieve,

and then by 9:00,
it's completely different.

Right now, we've got four
operating rooms going.

We've got eyes,
general pediatrics, and clefts.

And so we're really doing
an amazing job,

we're getting through the patients.

And we're seeing lives changed.

And so I mean,
I couldn't be happier.

I'm Thomas and I work as a senior
chef on the Africa Mercy,

and I'm from the Netherlands.

Are you guys doing okay?

You're good?

Senior chef is responsible
for basically all the foods.

So you’ll guide the team leaders
in the galley,

Gloria, can you give me
four more of these?

Please.

You're going to cut the beef?

- Yeah.
- You going to help him or...

- Cubes?

I keep an eye on
the food, of course.

How it is being prepared.

Yeah, so we steam the potatoes
in the in the oven, and then,

we got put it in a big mixer,
big bowl, and we gonna

mix it all up with milk and butter

to have it nice and creamy,

and then we take it out,
and then you're going to send it

down to the dining room for lunch.

That’s good, that’s good.

Most of all, I do a lot of planning,
so I do ordering, see the menu,

what needs to be used...

what is in season?

Because we buy a lot locally
here in Madagascar.

We’re always busy.

When something is
out of the skillet,

something else goes straight in.

We prepping ahead
for the next meal.

So, when this is done,
we're going to prep for dinner,

and we're always busy with that.

It’s uh... It’s just a stressful day.

A lot of things going on.

We're running four ORs
and things like that.

So, lots of people to see,
people to talk to.

It's a really interesting place
as a newlywed, because we came straight

back to the ship, as newlyweds last year.

It's challenging because it's difficult

to find time just for you two as a couple.

And so we have to be very intentional
about finding date nights

so that we can kind of continue
to get to know each other

because we're really at the beginning
of our relationship still.

So why don't we go on a bike ride?

- Yeah.
- You like that, right?

Yeah, of course.

I'm Dutch, you know that.

- Even in the bad weather?
- Always.

Obviously Thomas is Dutch, I'm English.

And so...

I'm trying to learn to be Dutch,
which means, of course,

I have to ride a bicycle.

Coming up on The Mercy Ships:

So I am excited to invite
the Moore family to come to visit

my family next week.

So when I first came on board
and I took this role

as security officer, I got to learn
the team that I have to work with.

And that is a team that
consists of Nepalese guards

and most of them have been Gurkhas.

Gurkha is really renowned
in the military world all over.

So these men have worked with us now
for many, many years.

And they-- they're very
consistent in what they do

and that's, I think, something
that we all can really learn from.

Like, it's not easy to stand
watch day in, day out,

year in, year out and be consistent
and doing well in your job.

And that's really with the team
I work with.

One of them is a supervisor of the team,
and he is then also my--

my, my educator in the sense
that I would say, okay, if I want to

convey this to the team, how do I do that
in a cultural, appropriate manner?

How do I bring this well across?

What's working behind the scenes?

Can you investigate for me?

Like, that's kind of how we work together
and it’s a beautiful symphony.

Remember what I mentioned about?

That it's not only about people, but it's
about the items that you could find or...

Gerrit, he is a very
good leader for us.

He just teach us very seriously.

And also he's a very kind person.

He's very much helpful, kind.

He has a lot of good knowledge of

all type of security equipment,
which he shared and

we also shared our knowledge.

...or when
we're leaving, exactly.

So we make sure that people know
not to share our information

of the specific date when we leave,
because that would maybe...

put on extra risk.

Even though he's not Nepalese,

he knows all about us
and always try to help,

either in our security job
or in personal matters.

If we have something, some problem.

He's giving very good welfare.

For me, it's been a real big blessing
to learn their culture

through their eyes and,
and to work with them.

Such a humble team,

and we work really well together.

One of my team members who
is actually going to retire soon

is Mr. Min Gurung.

So Min Gurung has served on many
cruise ships over his time

after he retired
from his military careers.

So on the ship,
we can go to the carpentry,

now and then to just wind down and do
something for yourself.

And I find it a really nice time
to go there with my son.

So we'll use this time also in this
specific case, to build something

for Mr. Min and do that together.

My name is Neddy Rolland.

I'm from Madagascar, and I work
in the food service on the Africa Mercy.

Sometimes I work in the scullery.

Sometimes I serve on the serving line.

Yesterday, I did dishwasher.

I like serving people.

Yeah.

I am son of God,

and so, I love serving people.

Neddy was telling us this
is the first time that crew has been

- to the house.

And we just feel super
honored to be able to visit his family,

and see what life in the day of Neddy
is like, it was a real honor.

I think it's really important for my girls
to see how other people live.

I think it's really extra
special for them.

And it's bonus for me to make new friends.

but not everyone has the option
to be with their families sometimes.

So, I like that.

In Africa as a whole,
and particularly

in Sierra Leone,
there is no shipbuilding facilities.

So to get specific parts for

for ships here is a logistical challenge.

So our carpenters are very good

at devising solutions to get us
through periods where we need

these machinery pieces to be either
running or, you know, made watertight.

In the case of the lifeboat.

Blimey, this doesn't look to good, George.

- We got a lot of jobs in about 30 or so
- 30!

Oh my gosh,
they are just flowing in.

I know.
They just keep coming in

when you're at your busiest.

Ahhh... this one is
from the Captain.

I don't know, maybe if it was wood,
but everything's metal.

I don't think we can--

Unfortunately, there's not a lot
of wood on the ship.

The, uh, lifeboat window.

Yeah, and the Chief Officer
mentioned that again this morning.

It's important
that our lifeboats are in top condition.

Unfortunately,
one of the windows on the lifeboat

that the lifeboat coxswain
would look through got broken.

I can tackle that one.

I'll be working on rehab shoes
because we have the two already.

And then I think they're
bringing down a third today.

So we need to get those out
for the patients.

So the patients can be discharged.

They’re kind of high priority,
those ones.

Before the lifeboat window fix,
I first need to put finishing touches

on the shoe lift for Abdul, the patient
with the seven centimeter leg discrepancy.

Here is your shoe.

- Wonderful. Look at this.
- Ready.

Ta da!

So yeah, I've, increased the
height of it so now it should be--

about, yeah.

50mm or 5cm higher.

- Thank you!
- No problem.

It's going to feel a little
bit weightier again.

- Yep.
- This is heavy.

I'm planning on making
it lighter as well,

once I get to the final one, too.

Okay. Should we
give this a go, Abdul?

When he's had his surgery done,

He's been left with a leg
length discrepancy like this.

So his pelvis will be level,
but his legs are not.

And when his feet are both on the floor,
it means that his pelvis is shifted.

So it's a lot of strange walking,

lots of compensation, lots of moving in

what we would deem
like abnormal gait pattern.

This one’s better.

It's better? Good!

Yeah. Your knees are a little bit
more level, which is nice.

Your hips are a little bit
more level as well.

So the shoe lift

will help him have what we would deem
a normal walking pattern,

which will make his life a lot easier,
a lot more comfortable, and pain free.

Oh, you know, pain free as life
ever is for anybody.

So as we practice. Yeah.

Heel down first.

I am very, very fortunate

and grateful
for my role as a physiotherapist,

because we get to see the patients
from day one all the way to to the end.

And it's a really good
continuity of patient care,

patient support,
and really follow that patient story.

Throughout my seven years that
I've been on board, the hardest thing

for me is being away from my family
and I just miss them so much.

No! She's the one family member
that has never been able to come.

Beth’s sister, Kate,
her twin sister, is coming to the ship.

They are both like,
so excited about things.

She's going to be exploding.

So this is going to be Kate's
first time in Madagascar

and also on the ship.

So that will be very, very special.

My time in Madagascar has been amazing.

I knew I was going to get
to see her classroom

and see a lot of the places that she has
lived her life in the last eight years.

But I did not anticipate
getting to see so much of Madagascar,

getting to come out here to the
island and see the lighthouse.

Just really, have the whole experience.

We knew that it would be great.

But it was so much better
having Kate here.

Coming up on the next

So Anton knew that I'm interested
in learning to dive.

He actually was able to arrange for me
to be able to have a little intro

to diving, and get to try out
some of the equipment in the pool here

on ship.

Recently, one of the operating
room nurses came

with some surgical instruments

and asked if I could recreate some.

A lot of the O.R. team,

I've worked with them on various projects.

They've seen the work
that I can do.

They're confident
that I can pull this off.

I'm not sure yet.

We'll have to see.

Soccer is very popular
with all the crew.

So last year, we had a game.
Day Crew versus Ship Crew.

We're gonna have a revenge match
that will be Crew against Day Crew again.

Yeah, we're going to flog them again.
