you know, it's stuck with you.

Last night, we had one of our

headlines broken, and we have
to pull it on board.

So, today

we have to replace the line

and also send
additional line for security.

So that's what we are doing right now.

There was a snap loading came
on one of our forward lines.

So we’ve relooked at our
mooring arrangment again now to

take into account it’s a new season.

We’ve shuffled our ropes around a
little bit to make the--

what we call the leads better
on the ropes so that they will

counter that effect.

When we have them under

tension, both ropes
are on the same tension.

So that if the wind picks up
and pushes the bow off the key,

the load is equally balanced
across the two ropes

and not coming on to one first
and then the other later.

So I'm gonna send this one...

If all the lines are equal strength

and one breaks, it reduces
the strength on the rest of the line.

So that would cause the ship
to move a little bit

and cause the gangway to move,
which is not safe.

You walk back.

I mean, as a chief officer
you have to be ahead your game,

because when something goes wrong
that, you know, it's stuck with you,

So you want to be sure to be proactive,
to make sure things are done correctly.

Well, I was to say if it's not done
properly, then you'll get the load

coming on to one wire or one rope first.

and it will have more tension on it
before the other one comes on,

and you could end up
parting a line.

That's why I'm chief mate.

And effectively, now we've got

two ropes there in that same position
where there was only one before.

So hopefully I've got 100
tons of breaking strength next time,

so we won't end up with a snapped rope.

We finished changing the line,
they are all secure.

So we all done.

And the ship is ready to go.

We just having a party,

and the party don't stop.

It continues.

The 48 hour film project

kickoff was a lot of fun,
but also very tough.

We stayed up extremely late.

Most of us only got
2 or 3 hours of sleep.

But we made it.

That's the good thing.
We have a script.

We have a script ready.

And we're pretty excited
about what we came up with.

It's a beautiful, amazing story.

And we can't wait to shoot it.

I ended up staying up
until four in the morning.

And I got up at 6:30 this morning,

So... I'm very tired.

I am going to meet with people
individually just so that they know

what their particular jobs are.

A lot of people have never
been on set before.

Let me appreciate the team
that stayed up all night.

Looking forward to what we do today.

As a leader, I aim to

show people their potential.

It's really pushing
the limits of the people we work with

and using their potential
to make something great.

Most importantly,

to show how they can use their talents
to glorify God.

That's very important because

in the line of doing what we do,

we kind of separate the two,
but there is a beautiful way

you can bring it together,
and do everything for the glory of God.

I'll be doing casting.

Final casting in the car.

So just do your final preps,
pack up everything that you need,

and then let's head out.

'cause we're extremely behind schedule.

We are two hours behind
schedule and our first location

is a mile hike from the main road.

This is kind of the kickoff
of the shooting process.

So we will need guys helping Ibedu out,

sorting out lights and being
stand-in for Henrica,

so that Ibedu can get the lighting
as I work with her on the character.

So this is called a slate.

And so what the clacking sound does is it
helps the editor in post-production

to line up the audio file...

You said you want

You have to go deep

into yourself.

The hardest thing for me
is being away from my family.

is coming to the ship.

I'm just excited to see her whole life
here and, be a part of their lives.

So she's not suspicious,
like going to the gym or midship,

also like, in the dining room.

As a carpenter on the ship,
we have many responsibilities.

one of my favorite jobs we do is
we make a lot of the shoes for rehab.

So, what I'm doing with
this is I've been routering it out,

so that when he puts it on his foot,
it's not going to weigh

his foot down too much.

Just a reminder, folks.

When you're heading to the beach,
the rainy season has started.

That means the riptides
are probably going

to be that bit more intense.

We have it on reliable authority that the
crocodiles moved down closer to the coast.

And there's also the known problem
of quicksand

At river number two beach.

So if you happen to encounter
riptides, crocodiles,

and quicksand,
may the Lord have mercy on you.

Every weekend is like
being on holiday.

That's the great part about being on
the ship, you're in an exotic location.

It's a big opportunity for us to just
really get to know the country.

I’m Gerrit van den Noort,

I'm a Dutchy.

I'm from the Netherlands

and I'm from Zierikzee.

In Dutch we would say "Gerrit van den Noort"

So it's kind of like

throwing up a little bit.

And in English
we would say Gerrit van den Noort

And it's actually from the north.

And I'm currently
the security officer on board.

Can I see the gangway log?

The island group that I lived in, in
Zeeland was near to shore all the time.

And that's where I grew
very fond of the water.

And I often take my son,
so we go together.

It's a nice father-son moment.

We really like to to go to the water
also in these nations.

We often take our surfboards
on top of the car.

Not every nation has,

of course, a theater or cinema
or all those things,

but they do have majestic nature and
beautiful landscapes.

So if you love outdoors, then you're
in a wonderful place.

Surfing for me means

really being inside nature.

I can run or walk through the woods,
and I feel the nature.

But when I'm in the water,
I really feel like I'm part of it.

I feel the current along my legs.

And when I watch a wave come in
and try to catch it

and stand on it,

it just immerses me.

That's what I really love.

And I think that
goes back to my childhood,

spending days and days on the beach

waiting for wind to kite surf.

And then on the end of the day
when I would be in bed, I would lay down.

I would still feel the waves
just move me around.

That feeling, and I think that will
never go away.

And that maybe also was a part
of drawing me

to Mercy Ships to be on the
ship around the water.

We'll use this time,
just think about family life.

Think about how I want to organize
and structure that,

and how I want to really invest
in my children.

Especially with my oldest son.

I really look forward
to invest time together.

Yeah!

When we found out about Mercy Ships,
we were intrigued.

Not really knowing what to expect,
we were told we're going to

go live on a boat in Africa.

- Hi, come on in.
- Welcome!

This is our cabin.

- Hi, my name's Evangeline.
- And my name's Selah.

And we're daughters of
Kara and Ryan Moore.

In our kitchen,
we have a microwave, refrigerator,

and then we have a bunch of drawers
to put our food and our snacks.

Sharing a room this size with my sister
is a little rough being on the top bunk.

I have to step on our bed to get up.

She doesn't want to use the ladder.

The ladder's not... it's tiny.
And I don’t like it.

In here, we have our parent's room.

I really like their bed.

It's a very big, comfortable bed.

Yeah.

If you're a new family
coming onto the ship...

Do you guys remember the rules
to this one?

Yeah.

I would say...
you have to put in a lot of hard work

once you're here.

So going from our own rooms

and our own space,
and then compared to here,

I can't stay up late reading
because it keeps her up.

I can't leave the ship without an adult
because I'm a minor.

It's just really hard to go

from so much freedom
to being like... kind of confined.

My friends didn't believe me.

But, when they finally realized
I was actually going, they got really sad.

I've been with those friends

for kind of a long time
and gotten really close with them.

So leaving them was really hard.

We made it.

Walked up the gangway, signed a bunch of
papers said, okay, this is home.

I always imagined
that moment would be super magical.

I had a rough two weeks
when we first got here.

Just because I was kind of in shock still.

But then when you see the children
and they've had the surgery

and you think their life is forever
changed. My sacrifice is nothing, nothing.

I can't talk to my best friend?
Who cares?

I can write her a letter. You know?

Here on the ship, whenever

I want to do anything, I can just go
next door and knock on my friend's cabin.

And she's always right there,
ready to do whatever we want to do.

Even though I lost some of that freedom
I’m still glad I'm here.

I can go to the Malagasy
English youth group.

It's like a youth group

where I can teach people English
and tell them about the Bible.

I can try out telling
people about Jesus and

I feel like I can finally

change something.

You know, the phrase
"first world problems."

All the things that I think
I'm sacrificing are

nothing in comparison

to what we're able to offer.

If you're a new family

coming onto the ship,
be ready for the changes.

It's going to be exciting
and new and different,

and it'll be so amazing.

But you have to be ready for it.

Apparently all the youth on the ship
like playing with Nerf.

- Captain, Red team, you're ready?
- Yes!

- Blue team, you ready?
- Yes.

We'll always take out Nerf guns.

Have big Nerf wars.

Alright... One, two, three, begin!

Some of us are not the best with the Nerf
guns, but we're still there to have fun.

and some of us have tricky tactics.

How are you doing?

As a carpenter on the ship,

he's got a 70 millimeter discrepancy.

So about, like, that much difference
in the height of his legs.

So because of the big difference,

this shoe is being made in stages.

We're having to add
on one block at a time.

So it's not one giant difference.

What I'm doing with this

is I've been routing out
to make it as light as possible.

So that when he puts it on his foot,
it's not going to weigh

his foot down too much.

Obviously, as a balance, I want it
to be strong as well.

So I need to make sure

it's still structurally sound
and as light as we can make it.

So I've cut the center of these two
and I'm routing this one

as much as I can.

So it can all go on there to make up

for the 70 millimeter
discrepancy in his legs.

I was holding it beforehand,
and I'm like, this is heavy.

It weighed more than
the shoe itself.

And I thought, I obviously I can't make
it completely weightless.

My name's Joe Street.

I'm from the UK, and I'm one

of the bakers aboard the GLM.

So I've been on the GLM now for...

twelve...

Hold on. How long have I been here?

Okay.

I've been on the GLM now for 20 months.

As the baker aboard,
I prepare a lot of the breads and cakes.

Any given day, we'll make between
60 and 90 loaves of bread.

It just depends on
how much crew we have on board,

how many patients we have. We make a lot
of white breads and brown breads

the crew, the day crew, and patients eat.

And then whenever we have the time,

we'll make some special breads
or some special treats to serve, as well.

But also waking up so early,
I also prepare mostly breakfast.

So waking up
at 3 a.m. every day

definitely isn't easy.

It's something that you get used to,
but it takes a while.

But it's what we have to do.

This ship is like a village.

I play my part, and if my part
is waking up at 3 a.m.

every day, that’s just
what I've got to do.

Hello, my name is Morgan Georgioff.

I'm from Cannon Beach, Oregon,

and I am one of the galley
team leads here on the ship.

So Morgan is so much fun to be around.

She is so life-giving to work with.

- Good morning!
- Good morning!

How did you get here, Morgan?

After culinary school, I ended up working
in a fine dining restaurant in my town.

That was one of the busiest,
most chaotic places that you could work.

More chaotic than here?

Uh, depends on the day.

So I found out about
Mercy Ships a few years ago,

looking for some sort of ministry
opportunity through cooking.

So one evening,
I just really felt the pull from the Lord

so I opened up my computer and I googled
cooking for Jesus internationally.

And that led me to the Mercy Ships website
and that's how I got here.

As the galley team lead,
my job is not only to make sure

that the food tastes good,
but that my team are properly trained,

that we're making sure that we do
a variety of different foods.

We're feeding people
from all over the world,

so we want to make sure that we're
providing an international cuisine

to make people feel
a little bit more at home.

I've been able to get really close with
some of the day crew here,

including Auntie Bentia,
who's our hospital lead day crew.

It's been so cool to get to interact
with her and learn about

Sierra Leonian culture from her.

So what are you making for us today?

I'm making beans and palm oil.

Bean stew and palm oil?

- Black-eyed beans, yeah.
- Amazing.

Food is a very important thing
to everyone.

Food can be a comfort to everyone
just from smelling something

that you've known from your childhood

can really bring back memories
and make you feel safe.

We hear some stories of--
there's like a little girl

who was about to go into surgery.

And she was crying,
I don't want surgery!

I don't want surgery, I just want bread!

And so the second she woke up from surgery
and was in the PACU unit,

they had bread ready for her.

And she was so happy and so excited.

Okay, let's go.

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus,
we thank You for this food.

We pray that, Lord, as the patients

are eating the food, we pray the Lord
You will give them speedy recovery.

For in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

The ship can be a terrifying,
terrifying place to be,

especially for patients who have no idea
what they’re going to experience.

So when I’ve asked Morgan
about the local food,

she's always described it

as trying to get the patients
to feel as comfortable as possible

in an environment that they would never
normally find themselves, give them that

little taste of home that they know
they're safe and in good hands.

We all feel God's calling to come and help
anyone that we can.

We want to try
and make the world a better place.

A lot of Malagasy people

don't really have access to photos.

feels like home for me.

When something is out, of the skillet,
something else goes straight in.

We're prepping ahead for
the next meal.

And we're always busy with that.

because it's difficult to find time
just for you two as a couple.

It's nice to have our own
little communities on board.
