This is the first interview
I ever did like this.

-So, I'm gonna enjoy this one.
-[Alauna]For Coach Vick

to talk to young journalists
like myself,

it really does show
that he cares

about the Norfolk State
community.

Just starting off,

the world knows you
as an NFL player,

a sports analyst,

and now, they're
learning you as a coach.

But in your own words,

who, exactly, is Michael Vick?

I would say I'm
a very kind-hearted person,

very loving person.

Love sports
and love competition.

It's that consistency that
you be teaching the players.

I'm teachin' 'em how
to search for consistency.

[Alauna]
Before the season started,

everyone was saying,
we have Coach Vick,

a legend in the NFL coming.

So now, this is
our year to win.

And as the season goes on,

losing these games can be
a humbling experience

for Coach Vick,
because he's used to winning,

and it's just
back-to-back losses.

[Dr. Adams-Gaston]
You don't always get to win.

We always want to win.
[laughs]

And we think we can win.

It is disheartening
for not just the players,

but also just the university,
or students.

[Ross]
There it goes!

It doesn't feel good.

We don't get up,
work hard to lose.

It's easy when you're losing
to point fingers.

Everybody expected Mike Vick
to come here and just, you know,

change coach or win the SCS,
but it doesn't work like that.

You changin' a lot of habits,
you changin' a mindset.

It takes time.

My plan coming here

was to put Norfolk State
on the map

and change the culture.

But now, I realize that

you know, you can't change it
in one month.

You can't change it
in three months.

You gotta change it over time.

As I continue to evaluate,
it's more strenuous,

but it's all for the better.

His instincts on the field

has been tremendous.

I want him to continue
to trust him.

I have to ask you,
your quarterback situation.

How does that look
in the future?

[Vick] You don't want
to do a quarterback carousel.

Quarterback is
about being consistent,

about being efficient.

Givin' your teammates reason

to rally 'round you.

When Coach made the change

to put Izzy
in at the Wagner game,

Izzy threw a pick.
He was given a chance,

and the chance didn't go
the way it was supposed to go.

It sealed his fate, in a sense.

You gotta go with what's hot
and what's workin'.

This past week versus Wagner
really woke them up.

It's all about comin' together

and figuring out how
to do what we're preaching.

And if you don't
meet that standard,

just leave, man.

There it is.

Leadin' up to Hampton,

we gotta work through
eliminating the mistakes.

Practice the game plan.

Know that they can go out
and make it happen.

My whole mind set
changed last weekend.

I was like, damn, my baby

We put ourselves
in this position.

We gotta get more discipline.

to take responsibility?

for not instilling

the discipline that's led

those standards.

The game plan

Me and Kijafa first met
in early 2002.

It started out
as a great friendship.

Wanted to know and ask you

to tell me things
that I didn't want to hear.

You know, it's comin'
from a place of love.

She's such a blessing
in this life.

She's got his back.

She is a great wife to my son.

She's always been
behind him 100%.

Me and Mike have been
through everything together.

We've been through
times in our marriage

where we feel like
it wasn't gonna last anymore,

but we never gave up
on each other.

Every struggle,
every dilemma we went through,

it just made us
so much stronger.

What I love about my husband
right now,

he always makes me
feel special.

Like I'm the only beauty
in the room.

And it makes me feel
really, really loved.

Our relationship is the best
it's ever been now.

He's become a better husband,
a better father.

I love seeing him grow.

I always knew I could be with
her for the rest of my life.

We're a team
and we're teammates.

We've been through
a lot together,

more good than bad.

The type of love we do have

the commitment we have
for one another,

is just growing.

Do you miss him at home though?

Yeah, I do.

We got a issue with Kevon King.

He's not a bad kid.

But in the sense
of responsibility,

he's lacking it.

Kevon had an issue
with a teammate

on the bus after Wagner

in front of our AD.

Kevon King being suspended

probably hurt me
more than anything

because Kevon is very special.

He has a bright future.
He's a very bright kid.

But ultimately,
he has to control his emotions.

So, while he's
this super competitive person,

you still gotta be
a good teammate.

It concerns me, 'cause if they
don't get rid of these habits,

then it's gonna lead
to a bigger issue.

Yeah, coaches don't want
me to talk about it.

You get what I'm sayin'. Yeah.

Right now, I'm tryin'
to win football games, man.

It's gonna be tough
to beat Hampton without Kevon,

because we know we're
not gonna get the running game

that we might have had.
But hopefully,

the rest of my offense,
those guys step up.

But I'd rather lose games

when the kids
is gonna do the right thing.

And I'm never gonna
deviate from that,

because that's what
my coaches did to me.

So, whoever don't like it,
you know,

that door is always gonna
be open

for them to walk out.

You know, my mind
is supposed to be on football,

but football
is probably a third

of what this job consists of.

about redshirting.

Redshirting means you sit
the year out completely.

College football,
you can play four games,

and you can still redshirt.

My thing was to not redshirt,

stay engaged, you never know
when you gon' play.

You never know how the season
is gon' end up.

I'm tryin' to give him

Kevon's suspension,

in the practice, I'm just
not tolerating any bullshit.

With the coaches
and with the players,

everybody's under evaluation.

Because it's about making sure
our infrastructure is right.

This past weekend
was a prime example

of why we're not winning games.

It's not right for me
to watch y'all fail

in areas where I know
y'all can succeed.

And I can't take it no more.

But you look around, you seein'
one of our best players,

one of our
most trusted players,

one of our leaders,
is not out here right now.

Don't matter who you are,

do the right thing,
you're gonna play.

If you don't,
you're not gonna play.

It's gonna be my way
or the highway.

That gate gonna always be open

for the ones
who don't want to be here.

It's a lot of change
that need to be made

for coaches and players.

And it's just gonna start

with a different level
of discipline.

and conform

to the way I want 'em done.

I realized real young,

my drive to get

Makin' 'em happy

my biggest motivation,

my parents.

My pops was a professional
boxer for a livin'.

He's a great father.

I was 18 years old
when my pops went to prison.

He had left the house,
went to go do some things,

but he eventually
got picked up.

Stopped answerin' the phone.

Everybody wondering
what's goin' on.

It was real devastating.

You know, not havin' him
around to, you know,

just see things
that you're accomplishing.

So, we gotta create memories
that he can, hopefully,

see once he gets out.

-I was, what, five.

I'd go to my brother's practice.

Football just looked fun.

Like, I want to play this,
like right now.

My brother David was the
Defensive Player of the Year.

My brother got drafted
sixth round

by the Tennessee Titans.

My brother
makin' it to the league

gave me belief.

So now, I see myself
starting in the NFL.

I gotta push myself
to get there.

My dad and my brother,
they inspire me

just to be a better man
each and every day.

I gotta be the best brother
and son.

The greatest thing is
being a leader.

after talkin' to my father
and my family,

it was just best
for me to redshirt

and just to save my years.

things to happen this year,

but they just didn't work out,
which is unfortunate.

So, based off
how this season was going,

it really wasn't worth putting
your body through somethin',

especially with the big dreams
and aspirations that I have.

[Vick]Ultimately,
Izzy decided to redshirt.

So, I put him
on the scout team.

You get the reps
against the one defense.

And when I was in college,
it was invaluable for me,

so I felt like it'd be
invaluable for him.

But this decision
is probably something

that he's gonna have
to live with for a long time.

It's tough for anybody
to be that guy,

and now being
on the scout team.

So, I mean, it's definitely
gonna take a toll on anybody.

So, I can only imagine
for Izzy.

[Day'lan]The thing with Izzy,
it just shows you,

one minute, you can be
on the top of the pedestal,

and one minute,
you can be at the bottom.

It's another battle
that we gotta face.

[Izzy]It was
definitely hard at first

being on the scout team,

but I love my teammates
more than anything.

And I want to be
the best teammate I can be

around the guys
as much as I can.

We got a long way to go.

The drive, will, skill,
all that.

That's what it's gonna
come down to.

you feel frustrated

because you don't have
a lot of time to practice.

You don't have a lot of time
to communicate certain things.

The day has to move on.

So, I always gotta point it out

and figure out ways
to correct things.

Things that I've heard,
that I've observed,

on the sidelines,
players were starting

to lose respect
for certain coaches.

You don't put your hands
on no coach around here.

I don't be understandin' it,

Being first year head coach

in a leadership position,

you gotta
fine-tune some things.

You know, obviously,
we evaluate all the coaches,

because I can't continue
to let things linger.

If I do, the small problems
gonna equate to big problems.

I got a lot of respect for my
brother Marcus.

Whenever somethin' is exposed
or there's something

that needs to be said,
he's gonna tell me.

We want to know before
we get into conference play,

who can do what we need,
while it might come

with making hard decisions
and hurtin' feelings

is what has to happen.

When I looked at the defense
overall,

I always seen guys
runnin' open

holes that offense can attack.

So, whatever they have
goin' on,

is not workin', so.

When we get to Hampton,
we gotta all do our job.

The defense
keeps coming up short.
