Karan. Fun fact, now that I've turned 25

in the industry, it's safe to say my
first film is most probably older than a

lot of you watching right now.

Sad fact.

But well, fun fact for sure. But well
done, Karan. In a couple of decades,

you've somehow managed to direct seven
feature films.

Clap, clap, clap.

Whenever you've had some time off from
shooting eight seasons of this show.

And to celebrate exactly that tonight,
it's all about turning back the clock.

My guests tonight are two solid women
who are all shades of relatable on the

face of super mega stardom. One of them
literally redefined the genre romance on

Indian celluloid for a whole generation.

While the other...

let's just say, is the Rani of the
romantics. The last time they graced

couch together, there were some long
silences. But something tells me that

today, with these motormouths back in
full form, raised to the power of

infinity, today it's going to be the two
chatterjis, chatter, get it, versus

poor little me.

you, there were two interesting

incidents that happened.

One was, you called me to the van. You
said something quite sweet to me. You

said, you know, Karan, you're a bit like
soft.

You know, you will get intimidated. It's
a big set. You need to show you're in

control. You're the director. Though
you're only 24 years old. So why don't

scream at me loudly?

And if you manage to do that, everybody
will be like, whoa, you have to take

this director seriously. He screamed at
Kaja loudly.

So I just thought it was quite sweet
that, you know, you offered that. Though

didn't land up screaming at you because
I thought it would be a bit much if I

day one start screaming at a...

Such a huge movie star.

Right in the middle of it. We were
shooting Kohi Mil Gaya, the song. You

scream, but you hit me.

I didn't hit you. Don't say such things.
It's not considered appropriate. I

didn't hit you. It was abuse.

We'll talk about that later. No, no, no.

Can we finish the second thing? I want
to expose you. No, you won't.

that those were the days that none of

Frequently, both Shah Rukh and Kajal

in on it. And then poor thing was

eating something she was eating.

Breakfast. Breakfast.

First meal of the day. It's supposed to
be very healthy for you. And what did I

do? You just said, you can't eat this.
And you just slashed the plate from my

hand.

And then there was one scene where Shah
Rukh and I had planned. It was at Film

City. Yeah. The Mandir. Yeah. The Mandir
at Film City. The Mandir scene. Yeah.

And then? And then you say, because
you're the director of the film. So she

not getting the timing of something for
you.

That line, Rahul Khanna Har Tuesday
Mandir Aata Hai. I see, or something

that she had to say. And Shah Rukh had a
rhythm in which he wanted her to say

it. I had a rhythm. Clearly we were not
caring about her rhythm. We were

bothered about our rhythm. And at one
point, I see Shah Rukh's little pinching

and sitting and listening.

And I also came... No, no, you didn't
pinch me.

I think Shah Rukh hit me or you hit me.
No, what are you saying?

Either you hit me like this on the hand.
I didn't know about all this. Why did

you hide it for so long?

and giving even now. So that aspect of

yours hasn't changed. I'm loving and
giving but no one's taking.

But I want to tell you about Papa.

At that time, you mentioned Papa just
now. So I remember we were shooting Kuch

Kuch Hotai again, the same schedule. And
my father, for some reason, mobiles

were new. And he had that big, heavy
phone in his hand. And he was outside

Mehboob Studios on the road talking.
Because obviously, network was a thing

those days. And Sanju, Sanjay Dutt was
driving. And he said, Yassi, what are

doing here? So he says, my son has set
up.

I'm on the road.

That is such a Yash uncle joke.

He was like, at the end of the day, he
was like, where are you going for

shopping? For clothes? I said, Papa,
Manish and I want to go to London.

So, Manish and I want to go to London.
So, I want to tell you the funniest

ever. We decided to go to London to shop
for something.

For Anjali and Tina's clothes. By the
way, the red jumpsuit you're

wearing is actually from Baby Gap.

I'm just saying.

Those were the days when I fit into baby
clothes.

So it was the funniest because Adi, as
in your husband, was setting up Yash Raj

Films in the UK.

And Anil Thadani at that time was his
partner. So we had taken an apartment

two bedrooms, you know, two bedrooms at
that time because I was shopping with

Manish and they were setting up the Yash
Raj office.

So the guy who was the concierge of that
building at one point looked at Adi and

Anil. Because first in the morning, Adi
and Anil in corporate clothes used to

leave. And then me and Manish with our
shopping bags used to go.

So the concierge said to Adi once, y
'all are both such lovely couple.

Y 'all take such good care of your
husbands.

We looked like we were those, you know,
the partners.

Hey, our husband is going to do all the
work and his two friends, wives, are

going to shop to waste their money.

Are these things?

Adi's face was in shock.

Because Adi, firstly we were talking
about 1987, a different universe.

And then he said, you both are such love
couples.

So I wanted to ask, but who do you think
is my... I was like, I want Adi then.

Anil and Mani.

It was hilarious.

It was really looking strange to me.

At that point of time, let's go back in
time. So the two of you now I've been

seeing recently, families are so close.
But at that time, you all didn't have a

close friendship or a relationship at
all, right? You were not close to Rani

all. Not really. Though you all were
family, there was no rishta and you

actually kept like a silent distance
from her also. I used to wonder what

of family is this that we're talking to
each other.

Like I was like, I thought both are
cousins, both are mukharji.

It'll all be good. But was there a
distance just organically or you just

close to that side of the family?

Did you feel that there was a distance
at that time when you worked with her?

Yeah. Yeah. Of course, because I've
known her as a kid. Yeah. And she's

casual didi for me.

And yeah, it was a bit strange, but I...

I guess when you grow up and you, like,
grow apart, you don't really know the

reason why. Yeah. Because you don't meet
that often because Kajal Didi used to

stay in town and we were in Juhu. Yeah.
Me and Tanisha were much closer and we

are still closer.

But Kajal Didi was always closer to the
boys of the family, like my brother and

Shyamrata and all of them. Yeah. So it
was a bit strange. But then...

Yeah. What do you say about it now?
Yeah, I know. I mean, it was then. But

you remember the time where you actually
built a relationship?

Do you remember when it happened in the
last cup? I've seen this in the last

five years now. I think it started with
Pooja.

No, I think more after our...

Dad's past, I think.

It's more from that time. Yeah. I think
from the time her dad passed or my dad

passed, I think that's what happens to
families, you see. It's just an organic

thing that you come closer, you meet up
more. Yeah, because as families, when

you actually lose your loved ones, and I
was very close to Kajal's dad, you

know, because Shomu Kaka was literally,
mostly every day at my place, you know.

When you go through tough times, when
you go through...

you know loss in the family in terms of
you know people you love i think that's

when everybody comes closer i think like
you rightfully said i said tough times

when you lose a loved one that you kind
of set a relationship there is a

difference when you're 17.

And when you're like 40, you grow wiser
as people. You also

learn to not bother about the little
things in life. And it's always the

things. Like when Tanisha finally came
home, you know, three, four years after

my marriage. And she came home and what
we actually spoke was, why was there a

distance? And we both questioned each
other, what was the reason? And I told

Tanisha, I said, I really don't know.

And she was like, even I don't know why
this really happens. Sometimes, you

know, because you don't end up
discussing it, it just happens. Yeah,

think people take advantage of that. You
know, people from the outside and they

talk too much and they try and make
distance even grow further apart. You

you'll seldom find people who want
people to come together.

You'll always see people wanting to
break people even further. I've seen

because...

In the two, two and a half, two years
that Kajal and I didn't speak, which was

heartbreaking part of both of our lives.

We won't discuss what happened because
it's all in the past and we are like the

same. Like we've always were. Kajal is a
piece of my heart, will always be.

And what about me?

I'm talking about you. You are in the
heart along with her.

I remember at that time, did you realize
that there were people who were

actually feeding...

fire into us who weren't talking to each

are all grown up now and they can very

have one adult and I have one teenager.

So, yeah, both of them are, they have
very much a life of their own. They're

pretty much, you know, doing their own
thing. So, yes, I feel like now I can

take that time out and work and get back
on set. Absolutely.

All right. We, of course, my kids are
really close to Adira.

And I'm so glad because legacy
friendships are my favorite friendships.

Yash uncle and my dad were close
friends. Adi and I are best friends. And

kids, they do a taekwondo class. Class
together. And my kids love Adira. Adira

loves them. She's almost like that
oldest sibling to both Yash and Ruhi.

you're very protective in a correct
manner, I would say, about Adira. Like

Adira, nobody has ever got a photograph
of her ever.

I want to know that I respect. But how
do you manage this?

I tell them. You tell them. Don't take
baby's picture. And they look at my eyes

and they get scared.

Why? What are those eyes saying that
scare them? That they know. Like right

the time Adira was born, I think, and I
have to thank all the paparazzi and all

the media people. They really, I think,
love me because they kind of respected

that. And they know how Adi is.

our decision together that we didn't
want Adira to be photographed because we

have a different idea of how we want to
raise Adira so that Adira doesn't feel

privileged or she doesn't feel very
special in school and she feels like any

other kid and she doesn't get extra
attention and that was something that

and me wanted for her and that would
only happen if she would not be

photographed.

So I think it was the first year when,
of course, I was traveling with Adira

going out of the country. And I told
them, I said, please, baby ka photo mat

lije. And from that day, they kind of
respected that. And all this while,

whenever I travel, they always wait till
Adira goes into the airport.

And then they take my pictures.

So the other thing I want to ask, which
I know you may not want to reveal.

You come out of the airport and get
clicked, as do you.

Which exit does Adi take?

He takes the same exit.

No, it's not possible.

Everybody knows. He takes another
flight. Everyone has seen the romantics.

Aditya Chopra is a face that everybody
recognizes. They've loved the romantics,

seen it. But which exit? Because I've
never seen them even take a photograph

mistake. Can you tell us the secret
route?

influences us today.

literally the lines that we just wrote

or it was just written like who knew
that would be a pop culture line uh

you know or excuse me or that rani would
be called a serial killer yeah that

that so there's a yeah that there's a
guy called karan mirchandani who said

that actually murder mystery

So, yeah, we'll see.

So, we went to some young influencers.

Like, they're an entire generation, two
generations younger than us.

But the film is so impressionable. But
you don't have to, like, spell it out

like that, no? That they're two
generations younger.

There were some great songs, there were

some great dialogues. And this was also
Karan's debut as a filmmaker.

But biggest problem of Kuch Kuch Huda is
the plot point that did not work for

me. Riffaz B so nice. No landlady or
hostel warden is so nice.

So Riffaz B was too nice to all the
girls. In fact, Riffaz B wanted Anjali

quote unquote That's fun with Rahul.
When was the last time a garden or a

landlady told you to do that? Three
things I cannot wrap my head around in

movie. One, Kajol has basically invented
ASMR when she goes like... Why

couldn't Rani Mukherjee just leave an
email address for Kajol? Or just

like... Hey, here's the phone number,
Anjali. You can contact Anjali here.

This was her previous residential
address.

Why did Tina think it was a good idea to
interest her 8 -year -old with getting

her dad laid?

What is wrong with her? I mean, at 8,
Choti Anjali, I was kind of eating mud.

It's about time you guys invest in a
dating app called Anjali that is

exclusively for children to help them
find good matches for their parents.

There were two love triangles in three
hours in this film.

Why wasn't the film called Bohot Kuch
Hota Hai? Sorry Karan, it's 2023 and

you're not directing the film, I am.

So basically, Tina kind of lives on in a
polyamorous relationship with Rahul and

Anjali. And the three of them have like
a really cute life together.

And I feel like everybody has thought of
them as a trio of lovers.

And I've just had the courage to say it.
So that's my ending. Thank you. In my

version of the film, Anjali will stay
put with Aman because that relationship

making so much more sense to me. I feel
like Aman has invested quite a lot of

time in that relationship. And it does
look like a big green flag.

So I don't think Rahul and Anjali are
really ending up together.

Because when Rahul did not see Anjali
that first time around, I don't think he

deserves to see her the way she is the
second time around. Because Anjali has

done a lot of work on herself and
evolved.

Rahul and Anjali conspired to kill Tina
to get her wealth.

Then they wrote the letters to kid
Anjali so that kid Anjali would think it

her idea to bring them together.

It's a perfect murder.

This is my alternate ending for the
film.

So...

Kajol actually poisoned Rani Mukherjee.
It's an untraceable poison.

Everybody thought it was cancer, but it
wasn't. Kajol is the killer.

And at the end of the movie, when
they're getting married, Kajol puts the

in Shah Rukh's... Yeah, she puts the
hair in Shah Rukh's neck and then she

to the camera and smiles.

And then young Anjali... I like this
version, Karan. Let's make it. Look, we

spend a lot of time criticising things
about Kuch Kuch Hota and pointing out

flaws in it and all these plot holes
and...

I just think it is a film made with so
much love and conviction that, and it

believes in every ridiculous thing that
it's doing. Like, he wrote eight letters

for his daughter and she can't read
seven of them almost, right?

But that's the beauty of Kuch Kuch Hota
