Sharif: It's gonna be very hard for us to compromise,

and it's gonna have to be move-in ready.

This isn't really what I asked for.

It's got stains and stuff on it.

I can't even imagine what that is.

We're racking up on the project stuff.

It's not really a project. It's called homeownership.

One of the most important things that I'm looking for

is that escape plan.

That's enough room for me to get out in case something happens.

I would have to jump over the balcony.

You can never be too careful.

Sharif: That's insane to me.

I'm in the food-service industry,

and I'm also a personal chef on the side.

Sharif: We met about four years ago online on social media.

I sent him a message 'cause I saw

he was moving here to atlanta,

and I asked him did he want to hang out?

We'll go with that story. It's fine.

It's fine. -And now here we are.

We've been married for a little bit over two years.

There's no way that I'm this bad.

Sharif: John is very, very quiet in certain situations.

-Total opposites. -Yeah.

-Yeah. -Total.

John: Sharif is very fun, very loving.

Nothing really drives me crazy about you. I'm so perfect.

I'm not able to finish sentences.

But I usually help you finish your sentences.

You'd never help me finish them.

We're kind of the same person sometimes.

-Never. -[ laughs ]

like, all our friends and family are gonna be like,

"oh, my gosh. How did you make them be still that long?"

it was time for us to renew our lease

in our current apartment,

so this is the time, definitely, for us to say,

"let's go ahead and start looking for a house of our own

and stop spending money on rent."

it's expensive to live inside the perimeter. Yeah.

Sharif: I'm ready to get out of the hustle and bustle

of where we are right now in the city of atlanta.

It's time to move on, get a bigger house, get a yard.

So we want to be in the suburbs.

Seems quiet, too.

Very, which is a good thing. Yeah.

Our all-in budget is $250,000,

but I personally would like to stay at $200,000.

I think that we can find everything that we need

for $200,000.

Then why have a top of the budget

if we're not gonna reach it? [ laughs ]

it seems like all the houses

have the same sort of type of thing going for them.

Sharif: The kind of house that I'm looking for

is a ranch-style house.

It's kind of what I'm used to.

Being from south carolina, there's a lot of land.

There's a lot of farms.

There's a lot of goats and stuff where I'm from.

I'm not looking forward to having goats at all.

I'm looking for more of a cape cod-style house.

That's what my mom still lives in.

That's what I grew up in.

I think it looks old. I think it looks very dated.

So my mom's house is dated and old?

Your mom's house is beautiful.

I just don't want to live there.

[ laughs ] it raised me.

And look at you today.

we definitely are outside the city with this one.

I didn't say, "take me to the super country."

I don't know what this house is about, either.

This is not the ranch that I asked for.

It's most definitely not a cape cod house.

Sharif: So I guess tony will have some explaining to do.

Tony, what's going on, man? The neighborhood is cool,

but I don't know what this house is about.

Don't judge it just yet, guys.

Well, sharif and john wanted two different styles,

so I was trying to find a good mix

that would satisfy them both at the same time.

I think you're gonna really be surprised at the inside.

Sharif: So I don't see my fence that we asked for for the dogs,

which was really important for us on the top of the list.

Sharif: The dogs having a fence in the backyard

is one of my big must-haves,

so if it's not gonna work for them,

it's not gonna work for us.

Tony: Well, keep in mind, guys,

you're gonna be homeowners soon,

so those are projects that you can do

later on in the process once you get in the home.

Oh. It's split-level.

And we walk right into some steps

as soon as we get here.

Well, again, guys, before you jump to any conclusion

or make any decision, let's see the whole house.

It's the wood floors that we asked for,

which I don't see any carpet yet,

so you're hitting 100 here.

Right. I like the backsplash, as well.

Yeah. Gives it a modern feel.

Tony: So it has all-new appliances.

All the cabinetry is all-new.

I wish that there was an island here or some more prep space.

I love the cabinets,

but there's not a lot of countertop space.

Well, keep in mind with the island,

that could be something that you could add later on, as well.

We do have a perfect window, though,

so it's probably a good lighting for selfies.

Let's see how you look in the window. Absolutely.

I like these floors.

This looks really good,

and they continue into the bathroom.

John: The first thing I see is this wonderful shower.

Yes. There's no bathtub in here, which is positive.

Sharif: I think bathtubs are kind of gross.

I don't want to sit in my own dirt.

I do like this. I feel like this is upgraded,

so I feel like nobody else has used this yet. Tony: Right.

So it'll be clean for us, which is a good thing for me.

I hate germy old bathrooms.

Sharif: So what's around this corner?

So is this like another room inside of here?

-Actually, it is another room. -Okay.

Tony: And you can decide whether you want to use it

as a master bedroom.

I like it. It's a bit small for a master,

and this closet takes out a whole entire side of the room

that we can't put anything in front of.

Well, yeah, but you're gonna appreciate that space

when you can start to put all your clothes in there.

And also no carpet, so we continued on with wood,

okay. I see my points racking up here.

Let's continue on.

[ laughs ] yes, I like that.

-This is a second bedroom. -Okay.

It looks like it's almost the same size as the one next door. It is.

It looks a little bit bigger

just because of the way that wall is pushed.

Here we have a third bedroom.

Actually, it could be like a transitional room --

an office, a nursery, a laundry room.

Sharif: This is the biggest laundry room I've ever seen.

This is a nice-sized space.

We could do several things in this area down here.

We could have a huge television on that side of the room.

We can put our furniture here.

John: It's a good view, and it's enough room for me

to get out in case I have to use my escape plan.

-Oh, my gosh. -Wait, what?

I have to have an escape plan.

Sharif: John has this thing where he needs to, like,

get out of the house and have a plan to,

like, run away if somebody breaks in.

Because of watching "macgyver" as a child,

I learned how to have an escape plan.

So he taught you to tie blankets together. So no matter what --

exactly. No matter situation I'm in,

I'm gonna be able to get out of it quickly.

He can use paper clips to get out the window.

Paper -- if need be.

Someone making a decision on a house

based on escape plan -- this is a first for me,

but in this business, there's always a first,

so I'll just add this one to my list.

-I see the tub. -Uh-oh.

Tony: Well, we have a stand-up shower upstairs.

And the guests can use this bathroom and the tub.

That's perfectly fine.

-I'm totally good... -Yeah.

...With not ever having a bathtub.

I don't want my guests taking baths at my house, either.

So no bathtubs at all?

No bathtubs at all. I'm totally good with that. All showers.

John: Now, this would be perfect for your studio.

Totally. Yeah.

I could definitely do photography in here.

On the weekends, I do photography

because I love taking pictures of people,

and I need a space for that.

Sharif: This is nice and spacious.

John: There's enough room in the backyard for choreography,

that's for sure.

Tony: So can I get a thumbs up on this one?

I'm in the middle.

john: Well, it's not a cape cod.

And it's not a traditional ranch that I was looking for.

It had the big backyard that you asked for.

Right, but I didn't get the fence that I wanted,

and that was a must-have for myself and the dogs.

You have the brand-new kitchen, all-new appliances.

I do like that.

I mean, we're not using somebody else's old stuff,

and it's all brand-new, so it's not got a lot

of wear and tear on it already.

Eh. I'd like to see some other things.

This isn't really what I asked for.

Let's see if we can find something that's one level.

I'm not really good with the steps

up and down, up and down.

And then john can get out if he has to escape away,

so if you can find us that, that would be pretty amazing.

The houses are extremely close.

I am so ready for them to be in their own yard,

doing their own thing.

Sharif: I can't be more proud of the both of us

for even saying that we want to buy a house,

and to be able to do it together is important to me.

because he asked for a ranch-style home,

and it gives him additional space

in the basement for his studio.

This is a great home. It's a 3-bedroom,

1-1/2-bath on a basement.

-1-1/2-bath. -Yes.

I know. That's gonna be a concern to you guys.

-Yes. -I don't know.

I really wanted 2 bathrooms.

It's a great price and a great location.

What's the price on it?

This one's $219,000.

So it's more than I wanted to pay,

and I only have 1 1/2 bathroom.

John: Might have to add on a bathroom.

But, again, you know, given this market,

I want to make sure that you got exposure

to everything that's out there.

John: I don't know.

This living room is quite small.

Is this the main living room?

It is a quaint space.

This is the living room/entertainment space.

I do like the floors. Those are nice.

I'm not getting a lot of outside light in here.

Like, I feel like there's only this one window.

That's pretty much it.

Like, it would be wonderful if there was some windows

on that side to open up the room

so we can get some selfie light.

We'll all about the selfies, and the dim living room

and the dim dining is just not good enough for me.

I like the countertops, but I mean, this is your area.

What do you think?

I'm not in love with the countertop,

but I don't hate it, either.

But I do like that they did bring in all-new appliances,

which is an upgrade for us.

I do feel like it's a lot smaller

than what I was asking for for a kitchen,

and also there is no real prep space.

That's something to think about also for me.

Now, this is what I'm talking about.

This yard is huge.

I do like that you can walk straight from, like, the kitchen

to the outside area, so that's good for entertaining.

I like it. It's big enough.

I have enough room for my choreography.

There's enough room for the dogs.

As long as I get you some way to escape, you'll be fine.

That is correct.

I just can get something to attach the sheets to.

-This is the full bathroom. -Okay.

Where are we supposed to fit in here?

Tony: I know it's a little on the small side,

but they've done a great job with all the finishing touches.

For a toddler!

There's no room in here for a grown adult.

This is entirely too small, tony.

I mean, because we're only working with 1 1/2,

so if this is the full,

I cannot even imagine what the half looks like.

Okay. Is this considered a bedroom?

You can make it a bedroom, or you can make it an office.

Okay, but there's no door on the closet.

You can easily get another door for about $100, $150.

All right. Let's take a look at that room on the right there.

John: Okay.

I don't feel like this is that much bigger

than the room we just left.

It looks like it's kind of identical size.

-Yeah. -And again, this closet.

Now I feel like that's gonna be an issue,

if this is a recurring theme in all the rooms.

I definitely understand your concerns there,

so say $150 in that room, we're already to 300 bucks...

-Uh-huh. -...But still, very minimal.

-We're racking it up. -All right.

Tony: So we have another room here.

This would be classified as the master.

John: Okay.

We have two windows, additional lighting.

Yeah, and it's equally as small as the other two rooms. It is.

A closet with no door, so let's add that to the list.

And that's gonna be the half bath.

-In the master bedroom? -Yeah.

This ain't gonna work for me.

Me, either. It's really small.

So the master bathroom gets a half-bath,

and what's up with this creepy closet thing

over here with carpet inside of it?

-Like, disgusting carpet? -Yeah.

That's gonna be additional storage space.

I don't want to put anything in there

'cause you see that carpet?

It's got stains and stuff on it inside of a half-bathroom.

I can't even imagine what that is.

Oh, you got to watch your head coming down. Yeah.

Sharif: So is this supposed to be another living space?

It could potentially be living space. Okay.

It could be a photography studio.

John: I feel like it's, like, a dungeon.

-Or it could be... -A dungeon.

John: The basement's pretty creepy --

low ceilings, not enough light.

I don't think I'll ever spend any time down here.

Well, one more room over here.

Okay. Now, I can use this for my photography studio.

There's nothing obstructing the walls...

-No. -...Which is really good.

Like, I got a lot of space to work with in here.

Tony: So I'm hearing some positives now.

Mm. Yeah. On this side of the basement, yes.

On the other side, not so much.

I'm loving the outside. I love the deck.

I love the big yard.

I do like the fact that there are hardwood floors

all the way throughout.

I'm not a fan of that basement, though.

It is a little -- it's a little creepy.

I'm still a little confused on the doors

'cause none of the rooms have doors on the closets. Right.

And also, the restrooms

are just not where they need to be at all,

and I still want to see a cape cod.

I don't really care for the green.

Sharif: Yeah, I'm not a fan of that green.

That's a quick, easy $100 to the local hardware store.

We can do $100 if it's this far under budget.

Well, let's take a look over here. Okay.

As you can see, all the cabinetry is new.

-Nice. -The backsplash is new.

-And it's a gas stove. -It is a gas stove.

Sharif: That's nice. I like that.

There's not a lot of prep space,

so, I mean, there should be an island here, to me.

Well, looking at the space here,

there is enough space to put, like, a standalone island.

Okay.

This is a nice-sized deck.

-Yeah, it is. -This is a pretty huge deck.

You can easily fit about 10 to 15 guests out here.

Yeah, but this is a really small backyard.

Like, there's not enough room for the dogs,

and there's not enough room for me to do

any type of choreography, that's for sure.

So I know you want a cape cod

so you can have that escape-plan situation that you...

It doesn't even have to be a second story,

but I just need to make sure that wherever we're at,

I have a clear path that I can get out if something happens.

I don't know who he's running from.

I don't know if it's the fbi.

John: I'm aware of my surroundings,

and if something happens, I'm out of there.

Sharif: I think it doesn't match the rest of the house.

Like, they didn't do any upgrades in here,

and it's got a bathtub in it.

You know, I'm not a fan of bathtubs.

Yeah, but they definitely skipped out

on this part for an upgrade.

John: A little bit smaller.

I could see this being your office space.

Yeah. I could see that being there,

but we were batting 100 with no carpet.

Now we're carpet in the office/bedroom space.

But the main traffic areas in the house,

we have the hardwood floors,

and if that's something you choose to add later on,

it would be a small cost to do so. Yeah.

But the bedrooms usually have carpet in them.

And we could live with carpet in just a couple of rooms,

as long as it's not where everyone's gonna be walking.

And where the dogs won't be.

Tony: This would be considered the master.

We have another room that's kind of, like,

a puke green or something.

That's a project for you guys

so you can kind of bond with your house.

We're racking up on the projects, though.

Those small projects are gonna have us over budget.

But based on the price of this home,

you're not gonna exceed your budget. Yeah.

So if we turn around here,

that's gonna be your master bathroom.

Sharif: Yeah, and when I walk right in, there is a bathtub.

That's the first thing I see.

Yeah. I knew you were gonna call that out.

It is a little bit bigger than the one we just came from.

But there's no dual sinks,

so we definitely cannot be in this area at the same time.

Sharif: I like this railing here, tony.

What is this called? -Those are iron spindles.

It definitely adds a little character to the stairs.

It's making me forget about that ugly bathroom.

Oh, come on, guys.

Tony: This is gonna be, like, a basement.

It can be used as an entertainment space.

It can be used as a pool-table room.

-Your photography? -Yeah.

Sharif: It's big enough for photography... Yeah.

...And you can still entertain in the same space

down here, also, and I am glad that we have

the hardwood floors in this room.

Makes me forget all about the carpet that's upstairs. Yes.

Don't bring that up again, john.

-Okay. I'm sorry. -[ laughs ]

I did not like walking straight into those steps.

That was a downside for me.

You know, I'm really big with the ranch.

For me, I love it

'cause it's the cape cod feel that I like.

I do really like the flooring,

and I did like the lighting. Yeah.

We got to put a mark on there for that one.

Well, let's talk about the kitchen.

I personally didn't think that there was enough room for you

as far as prep space is concerned.

Yeah. Not a lot of area to cut and chop

and store stuff inside of there.

The backsplash was nice and so was the stove, too.

Yeah. And also, the deck was big,

but the yard space was entirely too small for me,

and there was no fence for the dogs,

plus they remodeled a lot

and did a lot with the other rooms,

but the bathrooms, they kind of just left back in the '90s.

I think what we need to do is maybe let you guys,

you know, talk about it.

I think so, also, 'cause you know you said

you wanted to move quickly with this one

since it is so under budget. Yeah.

What about that split-level ranch

with the really long driveway?

Yeah, yeah. I did like that one.

It had a couple of things that were good.

It was upgraded.

Yeah, but those steps are so intrusive.

I did not want a split-level ranch.

True. But think about those floors.

The floors are really nice.

Yeah, and it did have those two full entertaining spaces.

Not to mention that there was actually a shower for you...

-Yes. -...In the main bathroom.

The kitchen was also fully upgraded,

but there was not enough prep space.

Yeah, and we'd have to go through getting a fence. Yes.

So, you know the one I really liked was that raised ranch.

You know I'm all about the ranch. I know.

And the backyard was humongous... Yeah, it was.

...And already fenced in,

so that's one less project that we'll have to worry about.

I feel like that's the biggest plus for me.

But the entertaining space on the inside --

it was extra small,

and the kitchen didn't have almost any prep space at all.

Well, what about the closets?

Like, what is up with no closet doors?

And the closet doors.

Yeah. Like, I don't understand that at all.

Mnh-mnh. I didn't understand that one, either.

It was weird.

Which one did you like the most?

You know I liked the cape cod out of all of them.

It was $100,000 under budget.

But that backyard was extremely small.

And it had that big room downstairs

that you could possibly do photography in.

And the kitchen had that gas stove.

But there wasn't enough room for you...

No, it was not enough prep space. ...For prep area.

Those bathrooms were extremely small

and they also had not been updated yet.

Think about those wooden floors.

Those were really nice.

No, I think those are some good points to think about

when trying to make a decision.

I see people putting their garbage cans out

and getting them back in, and they all wave... Yeah.

...And that's a lot different from apartment living. Yeah.

Sharif: We ended up going with the split-level ranch.

We've been in the house about --

what would you say, about 10 days now? Yeah.

So the house was listed for $200,000,

and we ended up paying $200,000 for it

just to make sure that we could be the ones to get it.

-There we go. -Ah, look at that.

John: We didn't have many things to change.

We got a fence...

-Yeah. -...For the dogs.

You have to bring the guys over

so they can practice with you out here in the back.

Most definitely more than enough room back here.

The kitchen is working out perfectly

now I bought myself an island.

I'll let you pour the cocktails today -- the mimosas.

it just makes it perfect now for me.

so, one of the main reasons we chose this house

is because of all the entertaining space. Yeah.

Being a homeowner [laughs] is a lot.

Yeah. The only thing I was used to doing

was really changing the light bulb.
