you that when we start detecting

significant anomalies what sort of

anomalous fluctuations and levels of

radon gas emissions what else changes in

water and oil levels and fracturing that

sort of thing anything else

the pressures dropped how much but since

when okay uh where are you located come

the heart of our operation basically

this is where we coordinate all the

incoming information from police and

fire communications and as well as

direct on the scene reports that come in

from the field by phone or by radio then

everything's listed on a situations

board and the various departments

dispatch their people to the field to

cover each problem

now this is the police communication

center this is where all your 9-1-1

calls come in tell me dr. Winslow do you

ever find your job frustrating of course

don't you know you see I ask the

questions you answer the question you

find it frustrating why is that well

it's my job to talk about the very real

threat of a major earthquake here in

Southern California that tends to make

people nervous

you mean they freaked out they don't

want to hear about it but once they get

through the fear I usually find people

pretty receptive they want to know

what's coming so they can get prepared

because you can survive a major quake

even the big one if you're prepared okay

let's talk about the big one now most of

us assume the big one will be triggered

by the San Andreas Fault now I know a

lot of scientists disagree with that but

if it's not the San Andreas

where will the big one come from

probably from one of the other faults

directly under the Los Angeles basin for

example the Newport where are you going

to the map all right good

I like that we have to come with you

though there's no James okay now what

other faults were you talking about the

Newport Englewood for example and it

runs in a line directly from Westwood to

Newport Beach I seem to have heard that

the energy released would be greater

than several nuclear bombs is that

possible oh that's possible but it

depends on the magnitude of the quake

you're talking about for example a

magnitude seven quake would create a

force many times greater than any

man-made explosion ever produced could

you give us an idea of what effect that

would have on the LA area we'd expect to

see several things for example

widespread life line system failure life

line live lines being water gas

electricity nutrition communications

would be interrupted or breakdown what

areas would you expect to be hardest hit

initially the flats of Brentwood Beverly

Hills West what about the beach

communities the beach communities would

be most susceptible to liquefaction so

the posture what's liquefaction Oh

liquefaction is when an earthquake

strikes an area where the water table is

very high

shaking can transform loose sandy soils

into quicksand and then what happens

buildings list and sink like what

happened in the marina district up in

San Francisco

exactly and that's gonna happen here it

could it could we're all along the coast

from Malibu to Huntington Beach with a

possibility some inland areas shouldn't

the people who live in these areas be

warned of the danger

definitely right now we are trying to

sell the city on the idea of micro

zonation

what's my Christmas micro zonation is a

way in which property is rated for

earthquake susceptibility on a

block-by-block basis and how are the

developers and the real estate people

reacting to that I mean is this really

times is enough three four ten or you

only be satisfied when you look out that

window and see the city level Chad we

may be sitting on a major disaster here

ignore that the governor can't theories

mathematical probabilities now if I want

on probabilities I'd go broke every time

numerology or astrology it's just a

reliable science is based on probability

one

of a giant meteor falling out of space

difference it makes to know what are we

supposed to to throw our arms in the air

are numerous reports of people still
