Original subtitles

It's a boy.

Hi.

I want to kiss you.

This is what I do.

Impulsive sex

because of an inability to see the potential consequences.

Can I call you?

Yeah, you can call me.

We have a new midwife

starting here today.

No.

Our tongues just touched.

As far as everyone else is concerned...

We're total strangers. And it never happened.

- Yeah. - I think so.

- Great - Great.

I think that's my towel.

Sorry, no, it's not mine.

Oh, I’m pool women.

I remember.

- Nina. - Thomas.

[Billie] Ah, pawpaw ointment,

um, aluminum foil,

Nutella, and, um--

-ah, hand cream. -Yeah. Okay.

[Billie] Ange, can you drive? Sorry.

Nins?

-Nins. -Hm?

[Billie] Do you realize that there's a Thomas

liking and commenting on your entire social media history?

What?

He's commented on an album I liked two years ago.

There's not much to see. I hardly ever post anything.

Yeah, that doesn't mean other people aren't posting stuff.

Speaking from bitter personal experience.

Okay, so, most recent are baby shots,

-then-- -Condolence messages about Patrick.

[Ange] A video posted by Kim Akerholt "Goats That Scream Like Humans"

[screams]

[both laugh]

Is that funny? Am I supposed to think that's funny?

Nins, have you actually posted anything yourself?

Yeah, yeah, here's one from you.

Bowel cancer. "Have you done your bowel screening test?"

What?

Seriously, Nins. On your profile.

It's important.

Bowel cancer's the second biggest cancer killer.

Well, maybe you want to create a fuller picture

you know, some hot selfies,

some LOL-worthy articles, and then...

dropping that bowel cancer.

That test saves lives.

Ange, call Mrs. Corby. We're gonna be late.

We need a social media makeover here.

Oh, no!

[Nina] No. I--I--

Fuck it. Leave it.

It's honest.

I'm a mom, I've lost my partner

and my colleagues are ridiculous.

And you're extremely conscientious about the bowel.

Absolute full disclosure.

Leave it.

Have you had the test?

[groans] Torture.

-Oh. -[cell phone pings]

[Nina] Okay, so, I started liking and commenting

on all these party shots of you

but then, when I looked a bit further

[Thomas] I saw there was more to the story.

And I didn't want to post, "Sorry for your loss"

right after amazing dance moves.

So, this is just a quick message to say...

I am genuinely sorry, Nina.

And P.S., I did love the dance moves too.

[Nina] I did notice you liked some fairly embarrassing photos.

Hang on. Don't write back instantly.

It's a bit tragic.

Oh, Nina, he's seen the screaming goats.

Who cares what he thinks?

I also noticed your profile

has only a few glorious shots of you being the perfect dad.

Where's the unfortunately sweaty shots of you

doing the Funky Chicken?

I think it's only fair that you rectify this situation.

Wow. That was remarkably under thought.

For you.

-Okay, Miss Zoe, let's go. -[Zoe coos]

Let's go. Should we go?

[baby cries]

Oh, yeah. Come on.

Let's go.

-[click] -Let's go.

[Jimmy] Mom, can you keep it down? Alfie's having a snooze!

Again?

So now he's staying up all night and sleeping all day, is that right?

Could we not do this again, please?

Jimmy, you are overindulging him.

He'll--He'll never adjust to a new baby--

Look, it's a big change for the little fella.

I think he just needs to just--

-Hello! -Shh! Nina!

Oh, sorry. Is Paddy sleeping?

[Geraldine] They both are. Hello, Zoe darling.

-[Nina] Oh. -[chuckles]

Alfie too?

Yes. Ever since Paddy arrived,

Alfie sleeps when he wants, eats when he wants.

And mom's gone DEFCON on the whole backseat parenting.

-I'm loving it. -Aw.

Mom, I'm sure Jimmy's just--

No, I understand the instinct.

When you were born, Nina, I--I-

I overcompensated with Billie and she ran wild.

So, when Jimmy came along,

I let you know that my attention had shifted much better.

Leaving Nina to be a nervy, paranoid over-thinker.

-Sorry, Nins. -That's all right.

Oh, can we not do this in front of Zars, please?

She's got enough on her plate.

-Morning, Zars. -[Geraldine] Morning!

[Nina] How was last night with Paddy?

[Zara] Whoa. What's happening here?

-[Nina] What? -[Jimmy] Nothing.

[Geraldine] How about some breakfast?

I brought Zoe around to see the baby.

-Fruit salad. -[Jimmy] Mm.

Okay, I don't know what this little show is...

but could you please resume your normal dysfunction?

-[laughs] -[Geraldine] There's no dysfunction!

[Jimmy] We're--we're good.

[Geraldine hums]

Well, that was fucking terrifying.

[Billie] Yep. Yep.

Um, yeah, if you don't have any in the red,

I'll just--I'll take that cream quilt set.

-Bye. Hi, hi. -Hi.

-Hi. Mwah! -Sorry.

[Billie] Sorry, um-- I've just been...

running behind all morning.

-Sorry I'm late. -No, it's quite all right.

-I appreciate you meeting me. -Oh.

[huff]

You look lovely, Billie.

-A new outfit? -Yeah.

I haven't seen that one before. It's great. It's really great.

Hey, if you're not gay,

that is one of the most attractive th a man has ever said to me.

[chuckles] Right.

Gosh, I've missed you.

-Yeah? -Yeah.

Yeah. Since we sold the house

I've just been hunting for excuses to call you, you know?

I thought we said no sexing?

Uh, yes. That's not...

That's not what I'm suggesting.

-Oh, Okay. Right. -But I--

I have to confess that I would like t spend some more time with you, Billie

Yeah. Yeah, I'd be open to that.

-Yeah? -Yeah.

So, um, what?

You're thinking, like, um...

dates?

Actually, no.

Oh.

Well, instead of dates,

maybe we could just try and get a feel for each other's lifestyles.

I'm not quite sure I'm following.

Well, maybe one day a week you could participate in one of my hobbies

and on an alternate day, I could get involved in one of yours.

I don't really have any--any hobbies.

I don't really do anything.

What do you do?

Any number of things. Indoor rock climbing, hatha yoga, CrossFit.

-I go running. -Running?

-Yeah. -Running.

Yeah. But I wouldn't exactly describe you know, as a hobby.

You know, to be honest, I put on thrash-y music

and I imagine that there's been some kind of nuclear holocaust

and I just bolt until my legs can't handle it anymore.

Mostly, I just hang.

Well, when are you next hanging?

Um. Well, next Saturday's a day off for me.

All right. Well, me too.

Okay.

Hi, Anne. We're here for our nine-month check-up.

-Okay. -Please take a seat.

[Nina] Hey.

There you go.

[cell phone beeps]

[Thomas] Yeah, fair call about the photos.

Those pictures are a pretty shameless attempt

to paint myself as the perfect dad.

Of course, they're a total sham.

The truth is, I can't even get Rocco to eat a tomato.

[Thomas] You look, mate. Look, daddy likes it.

Hm.

Oh! That's good.

-Come on. -[splat]

[Nina] I completely sympathize with the tomato wars.

I can get Zoe to eat a few vegetables

but I still can't get her to sleep.

Every night is like a four-hour battle.

[Billie] Your problem, Nins, is that there is part of you

that actually wants to take Zoe back to bed with you.

I can assure you, Billie,

that every part of my body wants to sleep.

Not every part. No. And Zoe senses that.

She can read it. We talk about that.

-You talk about it? -Now you're getting stressy.

-I'm not stressy. -Stressy.

-In your voice. -[Nina] I am stressy, and obsessive

[Nina] I'd like to think we are two relatively intelligent adults,

both with medical degrees,

but when it comes to Zoe...

[Nina] All right, just a little sting, darling.

Just a little sting.

...we are both completely defeated,

totally psychologically outmaneuvered.

Uh, sorry.

Sorry.

It's ridiculous.

I--I fear she'll associate me with needles.

-Shall I do it? -No!

No.

-[chuckles softly] -There's a good girl!

-Hand's trembling a bit there, Philli -No, it's fine, it's fine.

Oh, honestly!

Ridiculous!

[Nina] Now, of course, Zoe's miraculously asleep

at the worst possible time.

If I'd managed to get her home,

I could maybe be achieving something,

but no, I'm in a parked car outside Edinburgh Gardens.

Just sitting here, another battle lost.

[Thomas] I'm in exactly the same position,

also with a sleeping kid just around the corner.

What sort of car do you drive?

I'll come find you.

[Nina] Come and find me?

Hang on, I wasn't expecting a meeting.

-He's really feeling the conflict. -He is.

[baby coos]

Is Kim around? I've organized a lunch with her.

-I'm just heading to see her now. -Yeah?

[Elvis] Hey, Zara!

[Zara] Dr. Kwan.

-Uh-- -Just pretend I'm not here.

Or have no feelings.

I mean, pretty well, so far.

He's no you, obviously.

-Obviously. -Obviously.

-It's a tough act to follow. -Impossible, really.

Kwan and Clegg, but yeah, I think so far, so good.

[baby cries]

What?

I don't know what the elephant is exactly

and I'm not about to ask you about it,

but I want you to know that everyone here is aware of it.

Aware of what?

-The elephant. -[Kim] What elephant?

[Zara] The reason that Leo and Nina act so oddly around each other

and are prone to coming up with such insanely convoluted excuses

-[Leo] What? -So, no gender issues?

-[Zara] No. -[Leo scoffs]

Well, the old Kim would just ask you flat-out,

but now that I'm in a position of extreme power, it feels wrong.

I, however, am just a member of the general public.

I can ask you flat-out.

[chuckles]

Ask me what, specifically?

Whether or not

the source of this awkwardness is sex-related.

[chuckles]

What?

[Kim] I'm not condoning this. I'm just observing. Go on.

And I'm not saying that you've had sex with Nina,

because, disturbingly, I'm across her entire sexual history.

It cannot be that.

But perhaps

you've been matched in online dating somehow.

Or you've got exes that have hooked up.

Not to my knowledge, no.

[Zara] Okay, I don't know what it is.

But there is definitely something,

something remarkably good

or embarrassingly bad.

Zara has sex-ray vision. I'm just offering that impartially.

Look, I would not doubt your sex-ray vision.

-Good. -Um,

and, you know, I wish, quite frankly.

But, uh, no. Sorry.

It's just your, um...

standard miscellaneous awkwardness.

[chuckles]

Confirmed.

Confirmed?

No, I haven't revealed anything.

Where are we going for lunch?

[Kim] Um, fish and chips?

[Zara] Again?

[cell phone rings]

Hello?

Hi. It's Leo here. Taylor.

Hi.

Why--why are you whispering?

Oh, I have a baby asleep in the back seat of the car I'm in.

-Okay. -Hi, Leo, would you mind?

Oh, sorry. When you're ready.

That's okay.

Sorry. Uh, yeah, I just thought I'd call

'cause I get the feeling that Mrs. Squires is...

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, she is.

And, um, that's good. She's on her feet

and she and little Joshua will be heading home tonight, probabl

Uh, sorry, Leo, I don't know what's going on, but--

[Leo] So, that's good.

Um, great news. It was sketchy

for a while, and now it is good.

Okay, splendid.

Bye.

-[line disconnects] -What?

-[Thomas] Hello. -Hi.

-It's this one. -Okay, thank you.

-Hello. -Hi.

-Still sleeping? -Yep.

[Thomas] This is perfect.

Apart from the fact that we can't hear each other.

I know.

Listen. Do you feel like a bit of a shopping picnic?

-What? -Wait.

[clangs]

[clicks]

[sniffs]

[cell phone rings]

[Nina] ...leave me a message after the tone.

-[beeps] -Hi. Again. Sorry about that.

Um, it's Leo here. Obviously.

[door slams]

Okay, look.

It's an odd assortment.

But...

we've got yoghurt,

we've got rice crackers, and we've got... icy poles -yay!

[laughs]

Oh, I don't wanna eat all your shopping.

Please. It's all melting anyway.

[Nina] What is this?

Is this weird without the kids?

[Thomas] For me to have Rocco asleep

and another adult to talk to,

this is an event.

Oh! Me too!

It's probably the social highlight of my week.

[Nina] God, don't make yourself sound tragic.

Do you remember what it was like to just leave the house?

No planning, no wipes or sippy cups?

Yeah, dimly.

I used to just spontaneously take myself to the movies.

Sometimes.

I used to just spontaneously jump on planes. Sometimes.

Pack a bag, head to the airport

pick a destination from the flight board.

-Now that seems like-- -Impossible.

Yeah.

Not that I don't love my life.

I mean, I didn't expect to be a single dad, but...

I love it.

Doesn't mean we can't fantasize.

[Nina] Oh, did you just flirt, Nina?

So, what would your fantasy night out look like?

[Nina] Okay, he seems to be in flirty territory too.

Oh, my--my fantasy night?

-Child-free. -Yeah.

Well, it'd be really simple.

-A good restaurant. -What sort?

Pasta. [chuckles]

I mean, Italian.

-Carbs. Creamy, creamy carbs. -Hm.

-Rich, bad-for-you pasta. -Yep.

And really good red wine.

or something more?

["Boys in Town" by Divinyls]

[singing along]

-Billie, where's the car key? -Don't know.

Will you just turn it down just for a moment and help me?

Hi, Lawrence. How you doing?

Billie, Lawrence is here!

[Billie] Sorry. All right. Hi.

Sorry. I didn't mean to stop your performance.

-[Billie] Hi. -[Lawrence] Mwah!

[Nina] Sorry, but could we all just look for a moment?

-Uh, what are we looking for? -Car keys.

Um, I'm sorry, I thought today was, um, casual hang-out day.

-Where's the keys? -Yeah.

Is this your casual hang-out ensemble?

What, is there something wrong with it?

No, no. It's--it's spectacular.

It's just, um, we're kiddie-wrangling here.

You know, there's a good chance you're gonna end up

covered in dribble or mushed-up food or...

you know, possibly even some shit.

Billie, could you just...

Check your bag, Nins. They're always in your bag.

[Nina sighs]

Um, maybe...

Maybe put this on, just to be safe.

[Lawrence] I could always just get this dry-cleaned, Billie.

Please. I'm in flannel pajama bottoms here.

-[Lawrence] Okay. -[Billie] Um...

Uh, well...

there's no agenda per se.

Um, but I did tell my brother

that we might meet up with him this afternoon

to look at a few houses that he's interested in, but that's just a mayb

Lovely house.

Lawrence, you might hit a point today,

possibly quite soon,

where there's just too much sobriety,

too much natural light, you know, too much flannel.

-Billie, I just want to-- -No, you might.

And if you do, just know

that I will still be up for a trashy date.

I'm actually quite good at them.

Well, so far, I'm really enjoying this, so...

-Okay. -Hm.

You've only been here two minutes, but okay.

Sorry. Sorry. It's just been such a chaos morning.

No, it's fine. Fine. Um...

Did you listen to my full message?

-[Nina] Yeah. Yeah. -[Leo] Yeah.

Look, when it comes to Kim and Zara

I wouldn't worry too much.

They are gossipy,

but, strangely, also discreet.

Yeah. I also kind of get the feeling

that it's everyone else, too.

-Everyone? -Elvis.

Clegg. It's like they keep...

saying enigmatic things to me,

trying to trick me into saying something.

-So, Dr. Proudman. -Yep?

It's not just me, then, is it?

-Wh-what? -You don't get it either, do you?

The Nina thing.

-There's a thing? -Yeah.

What are the characteristics of the thing?

I don't know. I've never really understood it either.

But I'm so glad I'm not alone.

Oh, that's normal.

Elvis and I are always a bit wrong-footed.

-Yeah, but then there was Clegg. -Right

Sexual intercourse in the workplace.

Literally in the workplace, or..

Well, also between colleagues.

What about it?

Well, I'm considering writing a paper on the subject.

Oh, look, that could have been actually true.

You know, as I reflect on my tenure here at St. Francis,

I realize that I have headed up a workplace

with a disproportionate high rate of...

intra-staff sexual liaisons.

How did I create this libidinous environment?

Was it me?

Was it my sexual energy that inspired them?

[Leo] Then he literally stared at me for 30 seconds. Unbroken.

[Nina] Yeah, sometimes he's not even looking at you.

He's just on a thought jag, and you happened to be in his line of vision.

-[Nina laughs] -[sniffs]

Did he sniff and walk away?

[Leo] Yes.

Okay.

Why don't--Look, why don't we just give in and tell them?

Uh, I thought you didn't...

You wanted to avoid that at all costs.

Yeah. But right now, avoiding it

is taking up more energy than just confessing.

And--And really, what's the worst that could happen?

Uh, it could be mortifyingly embarrassing

and taint every work day we have together for the rest of our careers.

[chuckles]

No, they'll just laugh.

They'll just laugh and then they'll tease us,

perhaps quite strongly, for about 48 hours, and then they'll...

they'll move on to something else.

I'd rather we close the chapter.

Okay.

If--if that's...

So, exactly what do we tell them?

Just tell them the truth.

And--and what's the truth?

-That we got drunk at an airport. -Yeah.

[Nina] And had a...

near miss of a one-night stand.

-A near miss? -Yep.

If you physicalize that, that's--that a fairly disturbing image.

We had a failed one-night stand, then.

-Failed? -Well, how would you describe it?

Well, we almost...

We almost had a one-night stand.

[Nina] Yeah, that should do it.

Right, we almost had a one-night stand.

Yeah.

-Then we didn't. -No.

Because...

-Are they gonna need reasons? -No. No. No, no, no. Of course not.

-Nah, that'll do. [laughs] -Yeah.

And then we'll all just have a laugh about it and move on with our lives.

-Yeah. Done. -Done.

[Billie] So, I'm guessing you're an only child?

[Lawrence] And what makes you say that?

[Billie] Well, just a few behavioural traits.

[Lawrence] Billie Proudman, are you-- Are you analyzing me?

[Billie] Well, you don't seem super-comfortable around infants.

And for you, beige clothing is a legitimate option.

So, you know, that's--that's telling.

[Lawrence] Well, actually, I do have a brother.

But he's older than me,

and he was at boarding school throughout most of my childhood.

So, where were you?

Oh, we moved all over. Here, um, South Africa, England.

Both my brother and I were tutored in our primary years,

and then we boarded in secondary school, so...

So, what, you were homeschooled?

Well... No, tutored, no.

And then boarded in secondary school.

So, you were basically Prince William.

Uh, not really, no. [chuckles]

And that's how you became a shrink.

-And how do you figure that? -Because you--you--

For so long, you sat outside

normal social behavior, you know, just observing it.

You know, like a little scientist.

[Lawrence] Well, possibly.

Have you got any other theories that you've developed about me or...

[Billie] Oh.

Actually, I had one, but it kind of freaks me out a bit.

[Lawrence] What?

Well, you know, I have noticed that, you know, you...

you like the company of people who are...

a year or two older than you.

And, look, just please, please don't me that your mother abandoned you

and that you were scarred for life. Or, you know,

that you were separated from her,

or that you have some mommy complex. 'Cause I think

-it would be an instant deal breaker. -No, no, no, no.

No.

With you, Billie, I...

I suspect there's something else at play.

Right. What?

Well, I don't want to--

-Don't want to analyze, but... -Yeah, do. Go on.

Look, when I'm around you, I...

I feel this kind of reckless energy

that I associate with adolescence.

Perhaps an adolescence that I never had.

Good answer.

-[Jimmy] Hey, Billie! -[Billie] Hey.

Um, Lawrence, Jimmy. Jimmy, Lawrence.

-[Lawrence] Hi. How are you? -[Jimmy] Hey, mate.

Oh, we're not sleeping together, by the way.

-Oh. okay. Cool. -[Billie] Yeah.

Yeah, um, but it's not entirely platonic either.

We're, um, exploring a new relationship model.

All right.

See, it's difficult for anyone in our family to understand a relationsh

that isn't built on impulse sex.

You know, 'cause the whole family, quite literally, built on it.

I am aware of that, yes.

So, what's happening? Are we going in?

Yeah, yeah, I just gotta-- Just gotta wake Alfie up.

Oh, is the baby keeping him up?

No, we've moved him out of our room

and his whole sleep cycle's shot.

Come on, little man, you gotta wake up.

-Hey, little guy. -We've got four houses to see.

-Hey. Oh, little buddy. -[Billie] Hey!

Come on, in you come. Good boy.

Good boy. Oh, little--

It's okay. It's okay.

In you go.

I'm not having two serves. I'm just supplying Clegg.

Don't judge me.

[Elvis] Can I finish the lamb?

-Have we all adequately lambed? -Yeah, it's all yours.

[Nina] Okay.

Now's as good as ever. Just say it casually.

Um...

How far away is Clegg?

I don't know. He's with a patient. Why?

Um...

Just...

-[Kim] Are you gonna vomit? -[Nina] No.

-You look nauseated. -No.

-Is it the lamb? -No.

No. I'm--I'm just...

want to open up a casual chat.

Because I'm--I'm aware that there's been some funny speculation recently.

-Speculation? -[Nina] Yes.

About me and Leo.

-And our-- -Interactions.

Yes.

I'm not personally aware of any speculation.

[Kim] Oh, come on, E-Kwan.

Any time she's around Leo, she hits about 11 on the Nina Scale.

Oh! What's that? [chuckles]

-Never mind. -What's the deal?

[Nina] Hang on. Why did you think this was necessary?

What can possibly be achieved here?

Well, you know how we said that we thought we knew each other?

-Yeah. -[Nina] Ah, shit.

Well, we do. [chuckles]

[chortles]

See, the--the night after my interview...

[Nina] Oh, God! Why did you want this?

...uh, we randomly met at the airport,

where we, uh, chatted,

and had a drink, or three.

And then we... had a...

near miss of a one-night stand.

-Near missed? -[Nina] Almost!

Had a failure--

Failed one-night stand.

Fail. Failure.

[Kim] I don't-- I don't know what to do first.

Laugh, hug you both, or call Zara! [chuckles]

Sorry, why are you sharing this information?

Well, because I-- I was under the impression--

Oh, no, it's okay. I'm happy to share in this moment.

I just don't understand why we are.

[Martin] What moment?

-Oh, God. -What?

Look, Nina and I were just, um, confess--

Uh, admitting.

Opening up a casual dialogue.

That we almost had a one-night stand...

at the airport hotel.

Prior to me starting here.

[chuckles]

React sensitively, fat face.

Define "almost."

-[Nina] Oh, God! -[Kim] Martin!

I--I--I really don't think that we need to go into details.

[chuckles] Thank you.

But it was nothing personal.

[sighs]

You all know where I'm at.

Uh, I thought I was ready for something,

and I wasn't.

Not yet. Not nearly.

[sigh]

So, I'd just, you know, like to put it behind me,

have a laugh about it and move on.

Let me share an experience from my own life tapestry.

-After Cherie left... -Oh, shit.

[Martin] I was unable to face intimacy,

and, uh, on my trip to Borneo,

I, uh, I sought to rectify this matter.

Look, suddenly, I need my office back!

May I just say that my entanglement

with the beautiful and mysterious Phincan

was confronting, messy, aromatic.

But ultimately, an important part of my journey.

-[Nina] Thank you, Martin. -[Kim] Great.

-[Martin] She could-- -Mm-hm.

[Martin] She could tie a grape stem with her tongue.

-Wow. -I'm done with the lamb.

[Billie] Yeah, this is by far the best out of the four.

But, Jimmy, there is no way this plac is gonna go for any less than 800K.

[Jimmy] Yeah, well, 800's the limit.

Eight hundred thousand dollars?

Yeah. I don't have 800K in my pocket, Billie.

I will be drawing on a banking institution, okay?

I thought you were only approved for seven?

-[Jimmy] No. Eight. -How many tacos are you selling?

I do have three pop-ups now, Billie.

And I have been living with mom to save.

-What's your turnover? -Do we have to discuss this now?

It's gonna be hard for me to focus on anything else.

-[coughing] -Oh, matey!

Oh, shit!

It's all right. He's been coughing all morning. Haven't you?

Vomit. Told you there'd be vomit.

[laughs]

-[coughing] -Is everything all right here?

-[Billie] Oh, yeah, yeah. -[Lawrence] Yeah, sorry.

[Jimmy] Look, you do me.

Hey, Jimmy?

Has he been eating any--any red food or anything?

No.

Um, it just--It's just-- It looks a bit like...

[Jimmy] It's okay, mate. It's okay.

Um, I'll just...

[phone rings]

Hello. How did it go?

Uh, Nins, I need some medical advice.

-Oh. What's wrong? -Well, we've got a bit of baby vomit.

But it looks like there might be some blood in it.

How much blood?

Oh, you know, not a huge amount.

It's a fair bit.

[ominous music]

Uh, okay, has--has the vomiting just started?

Yes.

Well, she, um...

She had her vaccines yesterday, but she shouldn't--

Oh, no. No, Nins. It's, it's, it's Alfie.

[Billie] Sorry. I'm with Jimmy at an open house.

It's not Zoe. She's fine.

[Nina] Not Zoe. Not Zoe.

She's with Lawrence. She is completely fine.

-Sorry. -Oh, no, no.

It's okay.

Okay.

Can you put Jimmy on?

[Billie] Hey, Jimmy.

Jimmy.

-Hey. -Hi, Jim.

Has this just come on quite suddenly?

Um, well, there's been the sleeplessness. But y--you know that.

Um, he hasn't seemed off-color until now.

Okay.

Can you bring him in here and we'll have him checked out?

-What, like, right now? -Yeah.

Yeah, it's probably being overcautious,

but let's get him into the pediatrici before the end of the day.

Okay.

[clang]

[door slam]

[beeping]

Hi. It's Nina Proudman. Could I please speak to Dr. Stevenson

[Nina] It's all right, sweetie. Mommy will be here soon.

[Jimmy] Here's mama.

-[Zara] Oh! Hi! -[Jimmy] Here's mama. Here's mommy.

Little man! You're not well. Here are the files.

-Hey, did you get Paddy to sleep? -No. No, not yet. But he's okay.

-Your mom's been great. -Yeah.

-Is there any improvement? -Well, he's stopped vomiting,

-so that's good. -We're next in to see Stevenson.

I've had a brief chat to him and he's aware

that Alfie was preemie and everything, so...

-Thank you. -[cell phone rings]

-Sorry, I'm just-- -[click]

[Thomas] I've found the perfect restaurant.

It's got a menu full of creamy carbs.

It's got soft furnishings.

Are you free this weekend?

[Ross] Oh. Proudman.

[Nina] Oh! Hi, Ross. Thank you for squeezing us in.

[Ross] Not at all. I'm sorry about the wait.

That's okay. Cheers.

Um, this is Zara and Jimmy, and little Alfie.

[Zara] Thank you so much again.

[Ross] Right

[water running]

Success?

Well, she's still sort of lolling around.

Sometimes, if you leave her.

That's very helpful.

[baby cries]

[Billie chuckles]

[yawning]

And she's down.

-Hey, I think you got some messages. -Oh.

[clicks]

Alfie's having a CT scan. Is that head or body?

Uh, it could be either.

[clicking]

What?

What is it?

Mick.

Um, he's really close to Jimmy.

And so I texted him about Alfie. I thought I should.

No, that's not entirely true. I did...

I messaged him about Alfie.

But I'm still clinging to reasons to contact him.

Which is terrible. I'm terrible.

-I don't know why I'm telling you thi -Billie, it's...

[screech]

Hi.

[Billie] Any news?

Not yet.

His test results aren't great though, so far.

Is it because he was a preemie, or?

We're just not sure why.

We'll probably know more in a few hours.

Is Zoe asleep?

Yeah. Just. But, um... Do you want some dinner?

No. Just I might go up and sit with her for a bit.

[distancing footsteps]

Thanks again for today.

[sigh]

Not at all.

And you'll keep me updated about your nephew?

Oh, yeah. I'll do.

Uh, and about before, the Mick thing.

Billie, it's fine.

No. I mean, yeah. But no.

I'm still in contact with my ex. You know that.

You know, settling the house.

And if I'm honest,

part of me doesn't want that to end.

Because then the relationship is really over.

So I do understand.

-Yeah, it's a long road. -Yeah, it is.

-Yeah. -Oh! Um, your V-neck.

-Unicorn fur. -Oh, don't worry.

I wouldn't mind wearing this a little bit longer, if I may.

[laughs]

-'Night. -Bye.

[door creaks close]

[Nina] Hi, Thomas. Thanks for your message.

Sorry I haven't responded.

Unfortunately, we got a nasty shock today.

We found out my two-year-old nephew is sick.

Possibly very sick.

When my sister rang and first told me about his symptoms,

there was this one moment

I thought she was talking about Zoe.

It would have only been a few seconds,

but I was just plunged into this silent airless horror.

Until I realized my mistake.

Then I was confused and hugely concerned.

But I'm ashamed to admit

there was relief, which, of course, led to guilt.

Later, I sat with my brother and his wife

while they met the pediatrician.

They were so still and unreadable,

but I... I could see

they were there in that place only without any reprieve.

[clicking]

[Billie] Nins.

Are you sure you're not hungry? I can bring it up.

Oh, no. I don't think I could eat anything at the moment.

More news?

Oh, no.

No, that's Thomas.

From the pool. I think he just asked me out on a date.

-You think? -He did.

Poor guy asks me out on a date

and I start writing an essay about Alfie, and parenting,

and the whole situation.

Don't worry about it now. He'll understand.

You're gonna stay up half the night

watching Zoe breathe, aren't you?

Love you.

Love you, too.

[mellow music]

[Nina] Funny, the impression you get

is that you have kids and life gets sedate.

But I feel like life's more extreme.

Like my heart's outside of my body now.

In this tiny, beautiful...

fragile little being.

[closing theme music]
