Brianna, she's a 16-year-old teenager.

She's trans.

She's sharing her life, her journey

on social media and on TikTok.

She just had that energy that was contagious,

and when she would post, it would always be, "I'm gonna be a star."

Her videos are everywhere.

She had a 60,000 following.

When I watched her TikTok videos

and seen how she blossomed into this beautiful girl,

I was happy.

Happy that she was living the life she wanted to live.

Brianna's TikToks were absolutely crucial

in reconnecting Brianna with her father.

I think it just became so clear how tragic it was

that such a full life was then cut short.

A murder investigation's underway.

Brianna Ghey was found with stab wounds

at Culcheth Linear Park.

Yeah?

You are under arrest on suspicion of murder.

This is really, really shocking.

Shocking because it's children murdering another child.

A 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl

have been charged and remanded in custody.

And it makes me feel sick that somebody can do this

to a 16-year-old girl.

Brianna was stabbed 28 times. That is brutal.

Jenkinson had written the names of five people that she wanted dead,

and Brianna's name was on that list.

She had a life that played out on TikTok,

and then, unfortunately, also a death that played out on TikTok.

Just before three o'clock on the 11th of February,

two local people had entered the park to walk their dog.

They actually saw a male bending over

ahead of them in the park.

They actually thought, originally, that he was putting a lead on a dog.

As they got closer, the male and the female with him

were then seen running away.

They could see something on the ground in front of them.

They saw that there was a body covered in blood.

SIRENS WAIL

Hello?

The officer arrives and begins to do CPR.

Paramedics arrive shortly after...

..but, unfortunately, despite everything they tried,

er... she was pronounced dead at four o'clock that day.

I'm Jayne Roughley, and I'm a forensic scientist.

My role within the case was to examine the crime scene.

It was evident she had been stabbed multiple times.

It was at least 28 times.

They were forceful injuries

indicative of a ferocious attack and a sustained attack.

It certainly indicated that the intention

of whoever had inflicted these injuries was to kill.

The area where the body was located,

to the right was a wooden bench,

where there was belongings on the bench and also on the floor.

She was identified as Brianna Ghey.

So tiny. Peaceful.

My name's Peter Spooner, and I'm Brianna Ghey's father.

When she was born, I was, like... you know...

I had the feeling of just joy and looking forward to the future.

Me and Brianna's mum split when she was a young age,

before Brianna's transition.

Growing up, when I had her for the weekend,

we went to Blackpool, places like that,

into the arcades, onto the beach.

I know it weren't much, but we enjoyed...

you know, enjoyed that time.

We enjoyed that time together.

'I lost contact for several years, something I really regret.'

I remember I received a Facebook message

saying she wanted to have contact with me.

After all that time, it was...

You know, I was shaking, I was nervous.

I was happy.

I'm Lorraine Sutton, I'm Peter Spooner's fiancee.

I said, "This is amazing, you're gonna get your bond back."

We started chatting.

And I just thought

that this would be just starting having a relationship again.

HE EXHALES

Two police officers knocked on the door.

They explained that they were the officers on the scene,

explained what had happened.

It just didn't sink in.

I just went in a complete state of shock.

Peter was very quiet, and he was just, like, grey in the face.

And I just sat there,

and I just kept looking at her messages,

thinking she'd come online.

I don't think anybody knew what to say.

I had the happiest day of my life when she was born.

HE EXHALES

I had the happiest day when she got back in touch.

And then the worst day ever on that day,

and still, to this day, I'll never forget it.

I'm sorry I can't speak at the moment.

'At the entrance to the park where she died,

'the flowers left in memory of Brianna Ghey.

'A life that, like so many,

'played out on social media, in TikTok videos like this.'

These are, like, the only heels I have, and they're too big for me.

When Brianna's name was actually identified, it went viral.

I'm 17 years old, and I'm scared to leave my house...

SNIFFS ..because of things like this.

I haven't known what to say, and every time I start, I get upset.

How could you take a child's life? She was only 16.

And it honestly has made me feel heartbroken.

'There was a community there who joined in their grief for her.'

LGBT+ people have always found each other on online spaces

because you're not always surrounded by people like you.

Hi, my name's Viv. I'm a 15-year-old trans girl.

I was 15 at the time when it happened.

I didn't believe it, and I remember just going silent.

I just broke down. It was a shock.

It's those questions that go through your mind,

whether you like it or not.

You want to know what happened.

The 999 call made by the dog walkers was very important

because it was made so close to the actual attack.

You can make an early hypothesis

that the two people at that location who ran away are suspects.

From the description given, police start tracking through CCTV

to the street, from public transport.

CCTV was taken at the bus stop in Culcheth.

There are two people, a boy and a girl.

Then you see Brianna come into vision.

She just looks so distinctive with her long red hair

and this great big fluffy hoodie that she was wearing.

In British law, children are automatically granted

what's called the right of anonymity.

Their identities are protected.

At this point, the suspects were known as Girl X and Boy Y.

They match the witness descriptions from the scene.

And that is the first footage

that we have of the three of them all together.

When Brianna told me she was trans, I took that...

I struggled.

My head was just all over the place and I didn't really understand it.

And I said, "I don't mind if you're gay,"

and obviously, she didn't like me saying that,

because she was not gay.

I really wish... I just dealt with it a lot better,

and I wish we didn't fall out over it,

and that's the guilt I have.

Peter did apologise to Brianna.

I can't say a single thing. That made it even worse.

Seeing her on TikTok, seeing how she blossomed...

..it made me proud of her.

It was actually through him enjoying those TikTok videos

that the pair started to reconnect

and started to build a relationship again.

I think she was very brave coming out as trans, you know,

and I hope she helped a lot of other children

who were trans themselves, who were struggling to come out.

Like, they're very, very big.

Like, I don't know how to show how tall they are.

I met Brianna online, on TikTok, when I was 13.

She came on my For You Page, which is like a home page

for videos that, like, would be interesting to you.

I followed her, then she followed me back,

and from there on, she became my mentor.

I've always kind of struggled with my identity a bit more,

and she helped me come out of the box a bit more.

I remember the first video I saw was a natural school make-up video,

which, at the time, wasn't very natural,

but she looked good.

She was kind of getting past the point of school.

She was getting ready to do her exams,

but she knew that afterwards, she wanted to do hair and beauty,

which she really enjoyed.

I think she would have been amazing at it.

I am Christina, I am Brianna's auntie.

I am Gillian, and I am Brianna's grandmother.

I looked at them videos of her on TikTok,

and I used to think, "God, she's... she's beautiful."

I can't believe how full of life and so confident.

You know, that's what she looked like to me on them. Very stunning.

My daughter Bethany shared a real passion for make-up.

And as you can see through videos of Brianna, she was very talented.

Peter was building that contact again,

but she was took away from us, you know, and that's what's sad.

In the last few hours, police have issued an appeal

to speak to a couple seen in the park.

Yeah, I'm appealing to a male and female.

News of that spread very, very quickly.

A mum got in touch with the police,

and she said that her daughter had been heading out that day

to meet up with Brianna.

And she said, "I think my daughter might have been

"the last person to see Brianna alive."

Hi, people of TikTok.

'Her daughter was Scarlett Jenkinson.'

On the surface, Scarlett Jenkinson seemed to come

from a normal background, a nice family.

They lived in a nice neighbourhood.

Both of her parents had respectable jobs.

Her father was a plasterer, and her mother was a teacher.

She was pictured riding a pony.

She just seemed really normal.

Scarlett's mum will be thinking, "Something's happened.

"Scarlett might have something important to tell the police,

"or is at risk herself,"

so phoning the police is a very natural thing to do

in those circumstances.

The police actually asked,

"Could you hand the phone over to Scarlett?"

She said, "Yeah, we did meet,"

but she told the police,

"Brianna went off to meet some bloke from Manchester,

"and I never saw her again."

That phone call would have helped the police

because it put Jenkinson potentially at the scene of the crime.

So a very important person in the investigation.

Things are happening very quickly.

There's a description from the scene that there are two people.

So any association there with Scarlett

becomes a very important one.

Police learnt that Scarlett has a friend who lived in the area,

and he's a 15-year-old boy called Eddie Ratcliffe.

They first meet as 11-year-olds in Year 7

in Culcheth High School,

where they actually make friends with each other,

and that's some years back.

The friendship's formed very early on.

We also know that Eddie Ratcliffe had quite a privileged upbringing.

His mum was a graphic designer,

his dad had businesses and had a kick boxing gym.

Growing up, Ratcliffe, you know, was really into the sport

and competed at a UK level for kick boxing.

He went on holidays abroad with his family.

He was quite an achiever,

but chatting to his peers and his classmates,

he had very few friends.

He was socially awkward.

He really latched onto that relationship

that he had with Jenkinson.

You've got two people now who are very important to the investigation.

You would find it difficult, maybe,

to comprehend that young people could do so much harm

to another young person,

but you have to always keep an open mind

and follow the evidence.

You look at the culmination of different things.

Scarlett and Eddie match the witness descriptions from the scene.

Also, Scarlett had told her own mother

that she'd seen Brianna that afternoon.

And then you've got the CCTV evidence.

At that point, there's enough

for officers to apply for an arrest warrant.

SIRENS WAIL

The arrests were carried out as part of a simultaneous operation.

How come you're a suspect?

I don't know. All the information I've received is you are a suspect.

If you have two suspects, you want them away from each other

so that the police can deal with them as individuals

and without them knowing what each other are saying.

Scarlett is taken to Chester, to the Blacon Suite.

Right, listen, do all that in interview, all right?

'Eddie is taken to Runcorn.'

Two teenagers,

the 15-year-olds arrested on suspicion of Brianna's murder,

are being questioned by police.

The ages of the suspects was completely shocking.

The mentality of a 15-year-old to psychologically think

and do them things to a human being for nothing

is, like, mind-blowing to me.

We can't have 15-year-olds stabbing 16-year-olds in parks.

You know, you just can't comprehend that someone would do this.

Like, to be this young.

Upon both of their arrests, the police had a search warrant.

They treat both houses as crime scenes.

I don't think the police were ever expecting to find

what they found in Scarlett's house.

When they searched her bedroom,

they found this notebook on her desk.

Within that journal, she had analysed and written pages and pages

of really detailed descriptions of serial killers

that she, in a way, idolised.

She noted their qualities and how they went about their killings.

The top, there, was Harold Shipman.

Jeffrey Dahmer was on the list.

It was an endless succession of the darkest characters in human history.

As police looked further through the notebook,

they came across a really disgusting kill list.

Jenkinson had written quite clearly

the names of five people that she wanted to see dead...

and Brianna's name was at the top of that list.

Police came across a scrumpled-up piece of paper

that was shoved under her bed.

It was headed "Victim: Brianna Ghey".

This was a guide that had been designed by Scarlett

for the pair of them to take Brianna's life.

The plan, very chillingly, I think,

had a smiley face at the top,

drawn by Scarlett.

Police go into Eddie's bedroom, and they find a hunting knife.

And it was submitted for DNA profiling.

It later emerged that he had a fascination with knives.

Just a few weeks before Brianna was murdered,

Eddie was away on a skiing trip in Bulgaria,

and he bought this knife that he brought back with him.

Scarlett and Eddie are both being questioned

in different police stations.

There's options for suspects.

They're told they don't have to say anything.

Both of them, though, decided to talk.

Jenkinson claimed again that Brianna had ditched them,

that she'd gone off with a 17-year-old man from Manchester.

Scarlett was lying on the first call to the police

and consistently lied all the way through.

Eddie's account, straightaway, is graphic.

He must think that the police know he's at the scene

and he must have to account for being with Scarlett,

so his tale is that he was there in the park.

His story was that he'd just popped behind a tree for a pee...

..and then he heard these thuds and these sounds,

and as he came out,

he saw Scarlett standing over Brianna's body.

He actually describes seeing Scarlett

attacking Brianna with a knife,

and then he's panicked and run off with Scarlett.

You've got two accounts that are quite different,

and a really serious crime has occurred.

That is real red flag.

Two people have been arrested.

Beyond that, there's not much more we know.

She had her whole life ahead of her.

In the TikTok videos we'd seen, Brianna seemed quite outgoing,

but she struggled with her anxiety.

So it's one thing, you know, having the usual concerns

that young people do when they're at school,

it's another thing to have mental health struggles,

and then, on top of that,

Brianna was also transitioning, which doesn't happen overnight.

In real life, she didn't really go out much.

Her room was her safe place, I think.

Brianna spoke to me privately, as anyone would -

if you've got a friend and they're struggling,

then they're gonna talk to you.

Because of Brianna's, you know, difficulties,

she spent a lot of her time in this special inclusion unit.

These are designed to cater better for children

who either have additional needs,

or whether there is behaviour issues that need to be addressed.

Brianna was joined by Scarlett Jenkinson

in that special unit.

The two bonded over make-up and their appearance.

Scarlett was in the inclusion unit

because she was on what's called a "managed move".

She was previously at a different high school,

which she was suspended from.

This was the process,

so she would spend time in this classroom

before going onto the wider environment.

What had led up to Scarlett being in the inclusion unit,

the first school that she was at,

she had poisoned a more junior student

by giving them sweets that had been laced with cannabis.

There may be a multitude of reasons

why an alleged poisoning didn't result in a charge.

But perhaps this says something about Scarlett's character

and about this sort of duality,

because her parents claim that they never saw this side of her.

Brianna wasn't aware of just how serious

and how potentially dangerous Scarlett was.

She convinced Brianna that she was her friend.

The police have recovered Scarlett's phone,

Eddie's phone, Brianna's phone.

And on those, there are a large volume of communications

between the parties involved.

There were many WhatsApp messages between Scarlett and Eddie

in the months leading up to the attack.

It provided real insight into their minds and their thoughts.

It is unique.

A really sinister picture starts to emerge.

A boy at school is in a relationship with a girl

who Eddie feels is somebody that he's attracted to.

It's just absolutely bizarre

that they're talking about murdering someone.

They didn't carry the attack out, but it demonstrated

what their motivations were, what their fantasies were.

It was evidence of their thirst to kill.

Over time, it was clear that Jenkinson became quite fixated

and fascinated by Brianna.

In the messages Jenkinson sent to Ratcliffe,

she was explaining that Brianna was transgender.

Ratcliffe referred to Brianna as a "femboy",

really horrible derogatory term.

And you could see from the get-go, with Ratcliffe's response,

his transphobic attitudes towards Brianna.

He called her "it" in such a dehumanising way.

It really showed that he had this negative view of Brianna.

Peter received a message saying that Brianna wanted to meet up,

and he was absolutely delighted, he was bewildered,

he was... he couldn't believe her.

We planned the day.

She came round about 11.

She was very shy, and we sat out in the garden.

She met my two children.

My daughter was chatting about music cos she loves music,

and they realised that they were both Swiftie fans,

and my daughter's actually going to see Taylor Swift.

And I think about that still, to this day.

You know, I keep thinking, if she was here,

she'd be, you know, going with her.

You know, I could have got her a ticket as well, and...

Yeah.

If you can, please make it to Brianna's vigil tomorrow.

In the weeks after Brianna's death,

you saw a huge number of vigils and events to remember her.

I am seeing hundreds and hundreds of beautiful tributes for Brianna.

I want her to be remembered as Bri, and not for this.

The whole trans community, who feel shaken after this.

She was a larger-than-life character.

Protect trans youth. Protect trans youth.

There was a transphobic element in this crime.

The trans community wanted to speak to that

and make sure that Brianna's name was remembered.

'And I want to begin by reminding you,

'you must stay at home and save lives.'

Scarlett Jenkinson spent a lot of lockdown in her bedroom,

but she was like no other teenager.

Many teenagers might have that fascination

with the darker side of human nature,

but for Scarlett, it was... it was very different.

She was purposely going out of her way

to look for harrowing, distressing, disturbing content.

And it's unbelievable that a young girl was watching this

for hours in the privacy of her own bedroom.

There are a great many links between accessing extreme material

and exhibiting extreme behaviour.

That's not to say that everybody who views gore online

goes on to become a killer,

but there are certainly some people whose brains are wired differently,

and it switches something on inside of them.

You'd expect a friend to be horrified

by the messages that she was sending,

but instead, Ratcliffe was, in a way, encouraging her.

If those teenagers hadn't had such easy access

to that extreme material buried away on the dark web,

it is quite possible that Brianna would still be alive today.

Scarlett's behaviour is escalating.

Scarlett has made her mind up

that she's gonna do something with Eddie.

They start to then develop this plan to do Brianna harm.

The initial plan to kill Brianna

was make it look like she'd harmed herself,

rather than someone else doing it.

It is very, very clear that it is Scarlett who has the whip hand here.

It is her who is leading Eddie, but he's happy cos, for once,

he's got someone talking to him and being a friend.

Jenkinson lured Brianna out

on the pretence that they could allegedly get high together.

They took these ibuprofen pills.

When Brianna got home later that day,

she was in agony, unbearable stomach pain.

Her mum, Esther, said that she'd never seen her

or heard her in so much pain like this before.

She was violently sick,

and within her sick, you could see what looked like grape skins,

which potentially could have been,

you know, the casing of the pills that she had taken that day.

Scarlett was disappointed that it didn't work,

she was still alive.

Ratcliffe researched, you know, what would do the job

to make sure that an overdose was fulfilled

and that Brianna's life would end.

They conversed about, "How can it work next time?"

They had made their minds up that Brianna was going to die.

The first attempt, through poisoning her,

it didn't work, so they carried on.

There is a game.

This sort of symbiotic relationship.

They're feeding off each other.

They're very dangerous individuals really intent on killing.

The police had gathered this huge amount of information

that shows how that day unfolded.

Brianna's downfall was a mirror

of the plan they found in Scarlett's bedroom.

That note that police found under Scarlett's bed, it reads:

"Meet Eddie at wooden posts at 1pm.

"Walk down to library bus stop."

Eddie left his home and got a lift with his mum.

She knew that he was in a funny mood that morning.

He was snappy, and that wasn't usual,

and she was trying to engage him in conversation,

but he was shutting her down.

I can't imagine the journey in that car.

You know, what Ratcliffe would have been thinking

compared to what his mum would have been thinking that day.

Eddie's mum dropped him off.

He then meets up with Scarlett, and they're waiting for Brianna.

Brianna left home at 12:45pm, messaging her mother as she did,

"The dogs are locked up."

She gets on the bus.

And the bus driver told police that he remembered Brianna

because she just looked so distinctive.

He remembers that she was looking down at her screen a lot

and texting.

And this is a massive step for her.

You know, she's really anxious. She doesn't go out very often.

So, like any parent at that point,

all you wanna do, really, is reassure them,

to say that it's all right and to go and have a good time.

"Wait until Brianna gets off the bus."

She is greeted by Jenkinson.

You can also see Ratcliffe loitering in the background.

This is the first time that Eddie's ever properly met Brianna

or been introduced to her.

"And then the three of us walk to Linear Park."

Finally, they disappear into the park,

then make their way towards the bench.

Scarlett goes off for 20 minutes.

That's a long time for Scarlett to leave Brianna on her own,

particularly with somebody that she'd never met.

And there's no response.

And we can only imagine

what was going on in Scarlett's mind at that point.

Maybe she was preparing herself

for the attack that was going to come.

Shortly after she returned...

..that horrific attack was carried out.

Some ten minutes later, the two dog walkers come along...

..and disturb the two teenagers

as they are standing over Brianna's body.

Two teenagers have gone on trial

accused of murdering 16-year-old Brianna Ghey.

Boy Y and Girl X, who can't be named because of their age,

are accused of stabbing Brianna to death

in Culcheth Linear Park in February.

I can't imagine what the family's had to do,

listening to everything that happened to Brianna.

Hope her family can get justice for her,

and I hope that they can recover from this as well.

I really hope that these pair of scumbags

never see the light of day again.

So, at this point, there really is a mountain of evidence against them.

Both defendants in this case were charged jointly

with the most serious offence known to the criminal law -

murder.

They had the opportunity at that point to plead guilty,

but instead, they didn't.

Instead, they chose to go to trial, to plead not guilty...

..and to put Brianna's parents

through 18 days of utterly unimaginable horror.

I can't imagine what their parents are g...

I can't... I can't even think about

what their parents are going through.

'I chose to go with Peter every day.'

That's not something he could have dealt with by himself.

I was there to support my son.

That's the reason I went, just to be there for him.

'There was days where I felt like I didn't want to go,

'but I was doing it for Brianna.'

She went through that...

HE SIGHS What happened to her.

I had to be there for her.

The courtroom was extremely packed. It was busy.

There was 40-plus journalists

in another courtroom, listening, whilst I was giving evidence.

I-I've never experienced that in my 20-plus years.

I was questioned with regards to the scientific findings.

The hunting knife that was found in Eddie's wardrobe in his bedroom,

DNA was found on the knife, on the hilt of the blade,

and matching Brianna Ghey,

and it was determined to be the murder weapon.

Now, one of two teenagers accused of murdering Brianna Ghey

has blamed her co-accused.

The girl told the court

that any talk of harming Brianna was just a fantasy.

At trial, Scarlett changes her story.

Her claim was that Eddie started stabbing Brianna,

that was just a shock to her

because it was never meant to actually go ahead,

it was just something on paper.

In regards to Scarlett, some of the things

that she was saying was quite frustrating,

how she was trying to make out it was a fantasy all the time.

Eddie maintains his story

that it was Scarlett who carried out the murder.

The crime is awful enough,

but then when it comes to facing the consequences,

they turned against each other.

At no point did they show any remorse

for any moment that had led up to Brianna's death,

or the aftermath either.

It was very difficult to actually prove who had inflicted which blow,

but for the purposes of proving murder against both,

the prosecution didn't need to show that.

We just needed to show that they'd acted together

in bringing about the outcome, which they clearly did.

It took... I think it was about four hours, and the jury were back.

And it was like, "Ooh, is that a good thing it's quick?

"Is it a bad thing?"

It was Scarlett's name first...

and they said "guilty", and we were...

There was just, like, a big relief from all of us.

And I remember, I don't think she heard what had been said,

so they asked what it was, and the judge said, "It's guilty."

And it was just... There was no reaction.

She just...

It was like, "Oh, OK," type of thing.

They read out Eddie...

and again, it was guilty.

The evidence that they were responsible for this offence

was overwhelming.

I just am really angry about what they'd done.

I'll never forgive them, never.

They're monsters.

The teenage girl and boy

who murdered the teenager Brianna Ghey will be named.

Up to now, we've only been able to call them Girl X and Boy Y

because of their age.

They're both now 16.

The names of the two monsters who murdered Brianna Ghey,

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe.

At least now we can finally give Brianna a little bit of justice.

I think it's the right decision completely.

Scarlett Jenkinson, for the murder of Brianna Ghey,

you will be detained at His Majesty's pleasure.

I set the minimum term at 22 years.

Justice Yip provided a motive for the awful murder.

With Jenkinson, she was thirsty for blood.

It was being able to see that horrific stuff

that is on the dark web

that led her into a dark and wildly obsessive world.

Her sadistic motivations

had been revealed quite clearly in the WhatsApp messages.

Eddie Ratcliffe, you will be detained at His Majesty's pleasure.

I set the minimum term at 20 years.

I find also that you, Eddie, were motivated in part

by hostility towards Brianna because she was transgender.

The judge, in her summing up,

said that transphobia had been an element.

I'd love to know your thoughts, guys.

Do you think that their sentencing is right?

All I can say is 20-odd years is... It's just not enough, is it?

It's just never enough for taking a life.

Personally, in my own opinion, I do think they should have life.

It's impossible to put into words

how the murder of my child has affected me.

I never stopped loving her, and I never will.

I knew she was going to be a star,

and the amount of support she received

from followers on TikTok prove this.

And the amount of guilt I...

And the amount of guilt I have will sometimes be unbearable...

..but I will en-ensure her memory lives on in my thoughts and dreams.

No amount of justice is gonna bring her back for her mum and dad.

They've still got a life, and Brianna's life has gone.

My family and I request some healing space

for the next few weeks.

However, I will be back at the end of January

to continue my campaigning for better mental health support

for young people and their families.

'Brianna's mum has launched a campaign

'encouraging schools across the country to teach mindfulness.'

She wants the Peace & Mind campaign to be a lasting legacy for Brianna.

She's a really amazing woman.

There are countless tributes still being posted on TikTok.

We need to make sure Brianna's case does not get forgotten.

Rest in peace, Brianna.

Brianna's memory lives on.

I remember Brianna for being my friend

and being funny and kind and giving me advice.

Just being a good friend in general.

I have her on my little dresser photo frames, um,

for when I get ready,

and she's just always in my mind.

My memories of Brianna, we'll look at pictures,

we'll go and lay flowers.

We go to the place where it happened.

I feel close to her there.

When we go and lay them flowers, I feel she's there with us, and...

..it's, you know...

It's my way of, you know, grieving.
