he would just shut down.

In the middle of dinner,

Mark got another call,
said he had to go home

and deal with something, but
he wouldn't tell me what it was.

What's going on?

I don't know.

I remember our babysitter

was surprised we were home
so early.

The kids had just gone to bed.

And that was the last time
I saw Mark alive.

And you don't think Mark's

I know in my heart
there's more to the story.

At first, I thought

it must have something

Mark's grandfather's watch,
it was a family heirloom.

Mark was very protective of it.

I only ever saw him wear it
once the day we got married.

And aside from that one day,

it was always locked away
in the safe.

It says here that Valentin Reval
was rumored to be

the first watchmaker to use
a flying ruby set...

And his watch is making them
some of the most valuable

in the world.

He never told me a specific
number, but it was significant.

There were always
watch collectors

trying to contact him,
offering to buy it, but...

Mark always politely
turned them away.

That watch was a symbol of
Mark's family's survival.

To him, it was priceless.

Maybe he had gotten into
some trouble and had to sell it,

but deep down, I didn't think
that could be the reason.

But my mind, it was desperate

for some crumb of
an explanation.

If I'd never seen
that watch again,

I would have accepted
that as the explanation but...

A few days later...

there it was.

So it must have been
something else.

It wasn't about the watch.

Maria, I can't imagine what it
feels like to have endured

what you have.

But as far as book club,

I don't think it's our place
to dredge all of this up.

We're not here to discuss books

or solve crimes

That's just window dressing.

The real reason we're in this
club is to remind ourselves

that we're not alone,
and to help each other.

Tonight made me realize
that I need help with this.

the case,

just to understand
what happened,

it would mean so much
to me.

It was a setup.

Our previous Sheriff was a man
named Dalton Barnes.

Mark's sister, Jane was just
about to be elected mayor.

And there were rumors that
those two didn't get along.

There was a power struggle
between them.
