when we left last night.

And Duane's sudden collapse...

to find the Aztec treasure.

where Duane Ollinger and his team

are digging in search of long-lost Aztec gold.

Could the Aztecs have discovered this?

But the closer they get...

...at Blind Frog Ranch.

It's been a rough few days for us at the ranch, for sure.

We failed at draining the pond, but more importantly,

my dad falling ill and leaving the ranch.

And that definitely has me concerned.

Finding this gold is his dream.

It'll never be the same if he's not out there with me.

I mean, 'cause we started this a long time ago,

and I was right there with him.

Yes!

This is a dream and a goal we chased together.

But I'm definitely gonna keep searching for that goal.

I mean, not just for my dad, but for me.

And I may not make the same decisions

that my dad would make, but I'm fully committed

to finding this treasure now.

And we're gonna find it.

For the past three months,

Chad and Josh have been tracing the flooded tunnel path,

uncovering a series of Aztec markers

pointing to the treasure.

Is this not a bear guarding the cave?

But their attempts to drill and dive

into the flooded system both failed.

That's twice as high as it was when we left last night.

This isn't good.

So now Chad is turning to Eric, who has been methodically

testing the radioactive rocks on the ranch to locate

an alternate entrance to the chamber.

We have found uranium here at the Energy Zone,

and we have uranium at the open pit mine, too,

so there's a connection there.

- Eric. - Hey, fellas.

- Eric, what's up, man? - Hey, Eric.

Got some cool to share today.

We found a shatter cone a half mile away

from the energy zone.

That now makes three different locations

with evidence of a meteor strike.

The thing is, I think that means fragments

from the same meteor struck multiple locations

along that fault line.

Each one of these impacts could be a way

into that cavern system.

These are doorways into the underground.

And hopefully it's connected to that, uh, keyhole chamber.

Exactly.

After analyzing the rock samples,

Eric believes the caves at the open pit mine

are actually meteorite impact sites

that lead down into the Keyhole Chamber.

If my research is right,

we gotta go back to that open pit mine.

Last season, Chad and Eric discovered an open pit mine

two miles north of the ranch where they found evidence

of historic mining.

This could be 1930s, it could be late 1800s,

we don't know.

But based on his new insight,

Eric now believes the mine entrances are not man-made.

I don't think those were open pit mines.

I think those were openings to the earth

created by meteorite strikes

that were later mined for iron and gold.

And you mapped what? Already six-- six entrances?

Six-- six entrances.

And there could be so many more in that area,

that we just haven't found yet.

I mean, it could be really, really old.

- I wanna see this place. - Yeah.

Eric's theory makes sense, because evidence shows

ancient civilizations were mining mineral

at meteorite impact sites.

It's how they extracted iron for tools and weapons.

I'm really excited to get involved

and see what more we're gonna find.

I think this place does have a lot of potential,

but there is some, like, weird things that go on there.

Like, it almost seems like there's something stalking us

out there, like a wild animal.

What is that smell? It smells like a dead animal.

Whatever was out there, it was stalking us the whole time.

We start hearing these noises, and this wasn't just one time.

I mean, it was multiple times.

And we look out, we can see, like, eyes looking at us.

We definitely need some security around there.

If my dad was here, he would definitely drill

the armory again, despite the risks.

But I have to call the shots and do what I think is best.

And that's to lean on exploration.

I know in my gut the signs these civilizations

left behind will show us the way.

We just have to find it.

But the open pit mine is a remote location

that's super dangerous.

We didn't have enough hands or firepower

the last time we were up there, so this time,

we're bringing Josh and Charlie with us.

We just know that something is out there,

and we need extra protection. - Locked and loaded.

That's part of the good thing.

It's so remote that I don't think many people

have even been back here.

The open pit mine sits five miles north of Blind Frog,

and reaches an elevation of 10,000 feet.

We're right in the middle of great bear country,

The mountainous area is known for mountain lions,

black bears, and occasionally wolves.

- The forest is so thick. - Exactly.

Yeah, yeah.

It's kind of a hike,

and so it's pretty much undiscovered.

Yeah, there's drifts everywhere.

This looks like a literal gold mine to me.

Josh, where we found that ore was right down

at the very base.

I'd like for you to take a special look at that area

and see if there are any cavern openings.

The first time we scouted this, we assumed it was

an 1800s mining operation.

But this could be much older, and now we need to be looking

for deeper impacts on the ground.

Me and Eric are gonna go up that way towards this fault,

but we'll have radios and keep in contact.

I mean, a lot of trip zones here, so be careful.

When we last came up here,

we never explored this side of the mountain.

This area has some steep edges and cliffs,

and it's right along the fault line.

I think this is a great spot to start our search.

I don't know, maybe 60, 70 feet, you think?

This right here is an escarpment.

Yeah.

Escarpments are caused when two fault lines violently

push against each other, creating a towering cliff

that reveals a cross section of the earth.

This is huge.

This cross section could be a result

of these meteor impacts.

And if so, there has to be an entrance nearby.

I wanna get down to the bottom of this

to, uh, see if there's voids down there,

maybe a cave entrance. - Really?

I think our best bet is just to rappel down in--

- Perfect. - ...and see what's going on there.

If you're gonna go down there, I'm gonna cover the perimeter.

Good thinking, man.

Whenever I'm around ancient mining sites,

I get into detective mode.

I'm looking at everything.

I'm looking at the rock formation,

I'm looking for mineralization.

These old mine sites all tell a story.

If I can figure out what kind of system of mining

was happening here, I can follow the trail

into more cave openings.

I'm gonna metal detect this, the mine site right here.

Copper, silver, gold, all of that.

and then, I'm gonna look at the vein structure

going in the drifts here,

and see the vein they were actually following.

Chad, Chad.

- Huh? - Look at this.

Look at this opening here.

After repelling the face of the 60-foot escarpment,

Eric has uncovered a cave opening.

Oh, man!

Ooh, look at that.

See that rust color?

- Rust and red? - Yeah.

That's hematite.

I can almost guarantee you there's gold in there.

So that's what they were chasing?

- Is gold in there? - That's what they were chasing.

But it's difficult to tell if this was man-made,

or if this was a naturally occurring cave.

- Man, I gotta get in there. - Yeah, gotcha.

You wanna hold out here for me?

I'm going in, Chad.

This is a dangerous place.

We don't know what's in there or if it could collapse,

or if there's, like, poisonous gases,

so we always leave a man outside.

In case something does happen, I can always drag him out

so we don't both get trapped in there.

Yeah, look at this. This is the vein system.

We've got really good mineralization in here.

If we can find more of these, it might give us an in

to the-- the cave system.

And I see something here...

a piece of dark, dark material here.

I'm gonna look at it with the loop here.

So yeah, it's-- first of all, I pick it up,

and it's got some heft to it.

It's got some weight to it, which indicates possibly iron.

So I mean, there's-- there's iron throughout this mine.

You can see it.

Iron in nature, when it reacts with water, it oxidizes

and it turns red-- it's rust, basically.

What I've got here is something completely different.

I think we got a meteorite fragment.

Yeah.

So the meteor likely broke up in the atmosphere

into several smaller chunks.

So these fragments crashed into the earth

all along this fault line.

Say this is where the treasure chamber is.

So this is the meteorite, right?

If it came in from this direction,

there could be meteorite fragments

all along this trend.

It could lead us all the way down into the Keyhole Chamber.

Wow, man, this is huge.

I'm gonna take this back and, uh, do some tests on it.

Let's mark this down as checked.

But the trail is this way.

Let's head south to find a larger impact opening.

We're basically following this fault escarpment.

After rappelling down an escarpment, Chad and Eric

uncovered an opening at the base containing

a meteorite fragment inside...

into the Keyhole Chamber.

Meanwhile, at the base of the mountain,

Josh is searching the ancient mines,

poring through the tailings,

hoping for a clue that leads to the treasure.

I need to follow the veins that are here.

That's where you're gonna find entrances underground.

This is some pretty rich stuff.

I'm seeing all this quartz around here.

I wonder if this is a little work site.

See, that's a flat stone.

And this golden quartz,

I found it right underneath this flat stone right here.

Look at that. That stone's been worked, too.

...that's not natural.

Somebody did that to that rock.

Yeah, I mean, this is like a hammer.

A hand hammer, really.

I mean, this is like a matate.

Think of ancient Native Americans.

They'd grind their food.

When you're working a mine, it's the same thing.

You're gonna grind down your ore as well.

This is just like a mono.

And all this quartz is broke up

'cause they were breaking quartz

on this rock,

just like this,

just like that.

This stone tool, the Spanish didn't do this.

They didn't have stone tools like this.

The Mormons did not do this.

I mean, this looks like Native American,

where they're just using stone.

They're using actual stone tools, but for mining,

what this is telling me is maybe this mine

goes back 1,000 years.

Throughout the reign of the empire,

Aztecs used a variety of stone tools,

including metates, used for grinding corn,

and axes made of jade,

which were used to construct their pyramids.

But the most versatile was the hammerstone,

which is a flat-bottom rock with an etched center

that acts as a handle, used to crush stone

and extract precious minerals.

I mean, this could be the ancestors to the Aztec.

They were the first ones here to find this mineral deposit.

And if they were mining in this area

where meteorite strikes caused cavern openings,

it's possible that one of these tunnels

could lead all the way down into the Keyhole Chamber.

As best I can tell, the veins they were chasing

headed off in that direction.

What do we got here?

I followed the mineral trail,

and it led me straight to this pit right here.

That's pretty deep.

Yeah, nice find.

That looks like it goes under, doesn't it?

I wonder if there's some kind of void that might have been

covered up or caved in that's connected to the fault.

I think this went a lot deeper.

I mean, look at all the material

that's been moved out.

- This is a dump pile. - Yeah.

So that's not natural.

This has all been mined out of here.

- Right. - There's way more material out here...

- Exactly. - ...than came out of this hole.

- Right. - So this thing went way deeper

than we're looking at right now.

They were onto something.

The team has uncovered an opening that Josh believes

could have been once mined for gold.

However, it is in danger of collapse.

I'm seeing smashed-up timbers, I'm seeing rock fall.

I'm seeing this place is dangerous.

But the size of that dump pile has me intrigued.

All of that dirt came out of a much deeper hole

than I'm looking at right now.

One of us is gonna have to climb down there

and take a closer look.

I wanna check with the magnetometer.

So Eric, I was thinking about anchoring on this tree.

- Yeah. - And just rappelling down this way.

- That'll be solid. - The only thing, Chad.

We gotta be super careful.

Chad's plan is to descend some 30 feet down

to the bottom of the pit

to determine if there is a larger and deeper opening.

It's a little sketchy.

I'll check it with a magnetometer

and then maybe start digging around a little bit.

The magnetometer can measure distortions

in the earth's magnetic field

to gauge what's below the bottom of the pit.

You see any color down there, any mineralization, Chad?

I see some green for sure.

- OK. - That's a good sign.

This is saying it's a [bleep] void.

The magnetometer is picking up a huge void under this pit.

That means there's an entire open cavern,

like a hollow space underneath all these rocks.

That can go down another 200 feet.

I'm worried that that debris down there

is just holding the soil together.

The magnetometer has detected a void or tunnel

under the collapsed opening that Chad believes

is leading towards the energy zone.

We should bring equipment up here to scan the area

and see if we can trace the void back to the ranch.

This pit is completely collapsing into itself,

but there's clearly a void under this area.

Eric believes he can scan it and hopefully find a path

to this treasure chamber.

I came here today to check in on my dad.

He's staying in town until they finish all the tests

that they're running on him.

That's the main concern right now,

is getting him back healthy,

and getting him back on the ranch so we can keep going.

- Hey, buddy. - How you feeling?

A little better, still--still messed up, though.

Well, did you hear anything, or just...

No, not yet, not yet.

I think it's gonna take a while.

I got my appointments

and everything like that, maybe blood tests and...

- Yeah. - ...and, um,

what do you call those deals where they stick your ass

in that tunnel? - MRI or something.

MRI. I don't like that [bleep],

I got claustrophobia.

I might send somebody else in there for me.

Yeah.

- Well, it'd be good to know. - Yeah, yeah.

So far, you know, I've got blood tests, many of them, MRIs,

CAT scans, but they still don't know what all is going on.

What they're saying right now is I got nerve damage.

They're wondering why. They can't explain why.

They just know it's happening.

I think I prolonged a bunch of this a long time, and, hell,

who wants to sit in the freaking doctor's office.

Yeah.

I don't know if it'll be a week, two weeks, or a couple days,

but you're gonna have to grab a hold of those guys

and step up and, just like you always have,

take the ball and run.

I know my dad hates the idea of leaving the ranch

and going to Texas for more testing.

I know my dad wants to find this gold just as bad as I do.

But his health is the most important thing right now.

And I wanna be the one to tell him,

"Hey, we finally found this treasure chamber."

I mean, I know you started this whole thing.

So it means a whole lot to you, but it does me too.

So I'll definitely keep everyone in line

and keep-- keep moving forward.

My dad's put a lot of trust in me to run the exploration.

So I wanna repay that trust by finding a way

into that cavern system.

- James, can you get that map? - Yeah, I'll bring it down.

The evidence we found by the open pit mine

is really exciting.

The most important discovery yet.

The great thing about the void we found is that this is right

along that fault trend.

I think we should bring in some equipment

to help scan that area.

Based on how very remote and steep that area is,

I wanna bring in another LiDAR drone,

but a more powerful one.

Several months ago, Eric used a long-range LiDAR drone

to scan the fault line, identifying the open pit mine.

You see that bare spot there? It looks like an open pit mine.

But this time, Eric wants to bring

a 4D high-penetration LiDAR,

an enhanced version capable of scanning around

the most dense layers of rock and vegetation.

This enhanced version is called a full waveform LiDAR.

It's cutting-edge technology

and provides the highest resolution possible.

By concentrating the LiDAR in that one area

and using the high-penetration technology,

we'll be able to find every single opening

that could be covered by rocks and vegetation.

That could ultimately give us an answer

to where another cave entrance could be.

Let's go with Eric's plan.

Scout that whole area, and we might

come up with something. What do you think, fellas?

- Yeah. - Yeah.

The next morning, as the team prepares for their hike back up

to the open pit mine... - Hey!

- Hey, James. - Duane, how you been?

...Duane stops by the ranch before he leaves for home.

- You guys are going? - Yeah.

Packing up for that open pit mine.

- Really? - Yeah

Man, I really think there's some potential there.

How far is it out there?

It follows the fault line just past the ranch.

- Does it? - Yeah.

Hell, I'd like to-- I'd like to go, but, you know,

that's kind of rough country.

Hmm.

I've been busted up too much,

I'll let you do all that fun [bleep].

Yeah, I figured you might not wanna go.

Ah, hell, I don't mean I don't want to go, but you don't need

to be waiting on my dead ass. Let me know how that goes.

- I got it. - Alright.

You know, my dad has always been a...

Our thing is we don't show emotions,

We don't show this kind of sadness or weakness

or any kind of emotions like that.

But it's one of those things that you never really know

when the end of something is, you know?

You expect you got 20 more years to go with your old man

looking for treasure.

But time on Earth isn't guaranteed for anyone.

And I'd be lying to you if I said

I wasn't worried about him.

So I always carry weapons with me everywhere I go,

and the protection of everybody that's working out here is

paramount in my mind.

There could be some really disturbed person,

that's creeping around here also.

Whatever's out there, I plan to be prepared.

After discovering a void near the open pit mine...

This whole thing is a void, man.

Eric and the team are running a high-penetration LiDAR drone

near the collapsed pit, scanning for openings

that might connect underground.

By focusing on this particular area near the open pit mine,

and by using a stronger LiDAR with more lasers,

we'll have way better details of the landscape.

We wanna find a cave entrance.

And once we find a cave entrance, ultimately,

we wanna find that treasure.

We getting close, Eric?

No, no, we still have-- that was one quadrant.

We're going to search about three or four more.

But I did pick up an interesting cliffside

during that first scan.

The cliff lines up with the void, and it appears

to have holes in them. You guys wanna check it out?
