Duane and Charlie are constructing a catchment basin,

a reservoir they hope can hold enough water to allow Chad

to access the flooded tunnel system

and make his way to the armory cavern.

[Chad] We're hoping the water level throughout the cavern lowers

so we can have an air pocket throughout the whole cave.

They've already moved over close

to 100,000 cubic feet of dirt, enough to remove

over 800,000 gallons from the pond,

and are now in the process of constructing a makeshift dam

to contain the water.

[James] You're about a foot from the front right.

Using the weight of the excavator,

they will compact the dirt, hoping it is strong enough

to prevent the water from breaching the dam.

[Chad] I got soil movement over here.

I got -- uh, I got some collapse on this side.

But Duane's walking a tightrope

with a three-ton piece of machinery.

There was one point where a lot of dirt came down,

and it looked like either the excavator was coming down

or the entire dam was coming down.

But Duane knows what he's doing in an excavator.

[Duane] I live for this kind of [bleep].

Nothing makes me more happy than to set my ass

on a track hoe.

If it's a hard job, that's the one I want.

Ain't nobody gonna get on that damn track hoe but me.

This is a heavy-duty water pump.

I mean, you can suck a pig through this thing.

This is the type of machine that we use to drain mines

when we're gold mining.

All mines are just damp, because they were under water,

and they have to be engineered in a way

to drain that water out.

So that's what we have to do here.

arrives with the pump and hoses

to drain the water from the pond

and move it into the holding basin.

[Duane] Reaves, what do you got?

Uh, well, you got 40 feet of suction hose here,

100 foot of your lay flat. This is your pond liner.

That's 20 by 25, and two sheets of it.

This is the six-inch pioneer's trash pump.

[Chad] Nice, that'll pump some water, huh?

[Reaves] Yeah.

Josh's innovative plan is to use

an industrial mining pump to drain the water

from the pond into the catchment basin.

Weighing just under a ton, the pump must first be placed

as close to the pond as possible before the hoses

can be connected.

Once in place, they are hoping to lower the water level

in the tunnel by over a foot, giving Chad enough space

to safely reach the armory cavern.

[Chad] So how do you wanna get this set up?

[Duane] We'll just get that track hoe, and I'll start unloading

this vacuum pump.

That track hole will do all the work if you hook me up.

I mean, this is the first time we've used a big pump.

This is a six-inch pump that pumps 2,000 gallons a minute.

While the team has not been able

to measure the exact flow rate of the water underground,

a 2,000-gallon pipe is capable of pumping

an entire 20-by-10-foot swimming pool in just

four-and-a-half minutes.

Chad, I'll take them down the hole,

the water through the pump and over the dam.

Well, one of us is gonna have to get in the bucket then.

and then we can just cut it loose and drop it.

So we're gonna pick it up with the excavator

and send it out to the deepest part of the pond.

Even though we have this big equipment, we still need humans

out there, you know, cut it and place it.

I know, Chad's putting his dad in the truck, and they're

driving on out of here.

You know, in 40 years, I've never seen my dad

walk off a job, not once.

And that just shows the weight of this situation.

There's something really [bleep] wrong.

obviously we've noticed there's something off, you know?

He's never -- he's never peeled off a job like that.

So we got him to the ER.

Uh, they're gonna run some tests and see what's wrong with him.

I've worked my dad, my whole life, and I've never seen him

It -- it was almost like a look of helpless,

and that's how I knew something serious was happening.

Duane has been taken to a hospital in Vernal,

where doctors are assessing his condition.

I think run some tests, see what's going on with him,

and then, uh, just get some rest, recovery.

But in the meantime, let's keep working towards getting

all the water out of the pond.

I mean, that's what he wanted us to do, so.

[Chad] So we're gonna try to pump it out.

We'll measure how far it goes down, and we'll have

a calculation to know if we can outrun it with that pump.

[Charlie] We can use flags to keep track of how far it drops.

This will give us the answers we need, as far as volume.

-[Chad] Yeah, exactly, perfect. -Yeah.

We're gonna mark the water level of the pond,

uh, at the beginning, and that'll give us

a, uh, volume drop, so we'll know what we're doing.

With the suction hose placed inside the pond, the final step

is to extend the release hose into the catchment basin.

[Chad] I mean, it's super exciting, man.

This pond, it's always been filled with water.

It'll be really interesting to see what we find in the pond.

Years ago, Chad and Duane mapped the pond cavern with

a LiDAR scanner, enabling Chad to navigate the flooded cave.

But turbulent currents made the area too risky to continue.

With the water level lowered, Josh hopes it will give Chad

an air pocket to traverse the tunnel safely.

[Josh] Yeah, we're in place.

So we should be able to fire it up and send it.

[Josh] Because I've project managed our gold mines in Arizona,

I have experience in draining flooded mine systems.

But not being able to see below that small pond opening

makes this a trickier job.

in this pond alone before we start to lower

After running the pump for an hour,

the pond has already drained by four feet.

But the 20-foot-high dam is showing signs of cracking.

[Josh] It's starting to get to be a lot of pressure against this.

The plan is working.

That pump is strong enough to lower the level of the pond.

This basin is huge and can hold a lot more.

But there's a lot of pressure on the dam wall,

and we're starting to see some cracks.

[Chad] We should kill it?

Yeah, we don't want this water line to get

too far up this dam, 'cause then it could breach.

That should take a lot of pressure off the wall.

Chad will attempt to lengthen and the basin,

hoping to lower the pressure on the dam.

It takes some of the pressure off of a dam here,

[Chad] So right now, with pumping out all the water at the pond,

we're getting pretty low.

and we should see the entrance to the cave system.

I had to catch my arm with my leg to stop the dump.

Yesterday, it was just, uh, yeah, below my waist,

and now it'd be way over my head.

[Josh] I mean, we stood way ahead of the refill rate

all day yesterday.

I mean, just based on how much that's risen,

something happened underground. -Right.

We were so close.

Had it pumped out, and we even got further down

than we ever thought we would.

to have happened to refill that fast.

Yeah, I got a marlin on the end of it now.

It seems like by draining the pond,

we triggered an even bigger surge of water.

You know, we've always known that the aqueduct has

a strong flow, but this is a whole other level.

It nearly ripped the camera from my hands.

Let's go back and start the pump again.

We got that water level down once,

let's see if we can do it again.

[Chad] Well [bleep].

With the pump running for two hours,

the pond's water level has remained the same.

That cavern system just keeps putting more water in this pond.

And by the end of the day, this whole thing will be full, I'm sure.

[Josh] Well, here's the thing, it wasn't refilling last night,

and then it did.

That means that this aquifer, the levels of it

are fluctuating on its own.

[Charlie] So you think we've triggered some type of security system?

I don't know, I don't -- I don't know.

We've seen signs of Aztec water traps before.

Last year, when drilling detonation holes

in the energy zone...

[Chad] Look at that.

...the drill struck water. -[James] Wow.

And the entire ranch, including the pond, flooded.

That's a lot of water.

It's possible by draining the pond, the team could have

triggered flooding from a man-made source.

The Aztecs were masters of creating

aqueducts and passageways.

It's not out of the realm of possibility the Aztecs created

some type of water traps to secure the treasure.

[Chad] It's just -- it's frustrating.

I mean, we get close to something, and, you know,

something like this always happens.

We're not giving up.

I mean, I'm gonna call my dad, get with the guys,

and see how we can move forward.

Alright, we need to get back to the drawing board.

Fighting water is one of the hardest things

that you can do when you're going underground.

It was a bold plan, but it was working.

It's a bit perplexing because, in all my years of mining,

I have never seen such a dramatic change

in water levels like this.

It still blows my mind we found that skull.

We know there's an ecosystem below us here.

We've seen signs of predators by the pond before.

Last year, Charlie spotted a mysterious creature

near the pond. -This is what I got.

And the team brought in a biomedical expert

to collect and analyze water samples.

It has other DNA that is prehistoric.

So you might have a large biosphere

under Blind Frog Ranch is what I'm getting at.

[Charlie] There could be, uh, some kind of creature

down here at the pond lurking underground and underwater here.

And as of now, we still don't know what's going on with him.

[Duane] How's things there? How's the dam holding up?

No, we're alright, we're just --

uh, we've had a couple setbacks, but, uh,

just working through it.

We drained the pond.

We got about six or seven feet away, but something triggered

a new surge of water.

We tried draining the pond, but there's no way we can get

in that flooded cave system.

I think our top priority right now is that fault line.

It's produced a lot of clues, so I think if we keep searching

along it, we should find another entrance.

about someone or you care for them or whatever.

But we do care about each other.

Even though we don't talk about our emotions a lot,

my dad knows that I'm worried about him.

Uh, they're gonna do tests and go from there, right?

But I know he wants us to keep on moving forward.

So that's what we have to do.

First thing, I think we should discuss the pond.

[Josh] Yeah, hey, whatever's going on at that pond isn't normal.

I mean, if that was just groundwater in there,

it would have taken weeks to refill.

The fact that it filled up so fast shows us that there's

something going on underground that we can't explain.

And dealing with water that unpredictable is a big problem.

And then we have the risk of collapse.

I mean, that's -- that's a [bleep] death trap in there,

so we can't -- that's off the table.

I can't dive in there, but I wouldn't quite say

this is a setback.

You know, everything we learned

from draining the pond is information.

I say we start focusing on the fault zone,

and Eric's plan he's been working on,

I think that's our best option.

Every clue that we find is gonna help us get us closer

to that keyhole cavern and finding that treasure.

Hearing Duane's not coming back, it's a real blow.

It's a blow to the team.
