Duane gathers the team

to pore over the footage of the break-in.

So we had some intruders last night.

I think this is something totally, totally different.

Those guys from last year, they were blatant.

-[Chad] Yeah, they were. -They weren't trying to hide anything.

-[Chad] They're digging holes. -This guy is trying to sneak in here.

In the middle of the night.

Dude's got a mask on.

[Charlie] Those trespassers were digging tunnels,

looking for gold.

This guy was up to something else altogether.

to discover trespassers on the ranch...

an armed trespasser

unearthing a four-foot metal cylinder

with flashing lights on each end.

So the other day, we were following the path of the underwater cavern.

So we hike up to this ridge.

We're looking for any kind of clues at all.

We get up on top of the mountain there.

There's this, like, big rock

that we're like...

"Holy [bleep], man. That looks man-made."

[narrator] After discovering a blocked underwater tunnel,

which they believe is leading

to the Aztec treasure chamber...

We just have to find another way

to drop into that tunnel system.

[narrator] ...Chad and Josh are tracing

the path of the tunnel from above,

searching for another opening.

[Josh] If people were living in this cave system

and traveling in and out of it,

there has to be

naturally occurring ventilation.

There must be other entrances to the surface,

so we got to go find it.

[narrator] A mile and a half from the ranch,

they have uncovered an unusual marker

pointing to a turtle-shaped rock formation.

This is great news.

I mean, those are probably Aztec stone markers.

-Really? -[James] Yeah, it may be a site

that's been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

[narrator] Throughout ancient North America,

turtles were regarded as a symbol of protection,

and to the Aztecs,

turtles were a representation of caves

and the underworld.

According to written records,

indigenous tribes used turtles

to mark buried treasure,

with the head directing seekers

toward the valuables,

while a removed head

indicates the bounty has been recovered.

So we go over there,

and the turtle right here

has his head on it.

And they say if the head is still on there,

the treasure is still there.

Whenever they take the treasure out,

they knock the head off

to know that the treasure is gone.

And the turtle points towards

either the next marker

or the treasure.

[Duane] So they carved that out of sandstone, yeah?

[Josh] Yeah, exactly. And they would take a rock

that kind of looked like the shape they wanted to,

and they could just modify it a bit.

And we're not talking like

they were carving the statue of David.

This is another marker.

another clue.

A mysterious bear shape carved

next to the opening of a possible ventilation shaft.

This is the third marker in a row along the cavern path.

This is purposeful.

It meant something.

My guess is these markers are a wayfinding system.

This is the street signs of some ancient civilization.

Maybe it's the Aztec. I don't know.

But these markers were placed here for a reason.

We've got some work to do here. We've got to get in here

and see what's underneath all this rubble.

But we should be careful.

Bear symbols can indicate some kind of danger.

have long seen the bear as a symbol of courage and strength.

However, to the Aztecs,

bears were associated with a powerful god,

Tezcatlipoca,

whose presence was seen as a destructive force.

When used as a marker,

it was a sign of a death trap.

Hidden treasure is hidden treasure for a reason.

We really don't know what to expect.

So you've got to be super, super careful.

There's a lot of treasure hunters that don't come back.

I know treasure hunters that have died.

We don't know what's ahead of us in this unknown cave.

If there's a great treasure down there, people will

try and protect that.

That's not a game.

Those pitfalls can get you killed.

We don't know how deep this goes,

or what even is in there. I mean, it could be an animal

This bear could be some type of symbol

that would show direction

or some type of ceremonial usage.

But it definitely could be an air vent down with that flooded tunnel.

like an inch below the dirt.

We were looking for a void down there,

so I started digging up some of these rocks and throwing these rocks up,

flipped that one over, and it had these carvings in it.

[James] This seems to be an indigenous tablet.

[Josh] Yeah, maybe. You know,

-I've seen stuff like this before. -[Chad] Yeah.

[Josh] I mean, they were illiterate.

They would use something like this for a tally board

to keep track of

maybe bullion that they were storing, something like that.

So... [sighs]

Obviously something important...

-[Chad] Right. -...that they're tallying here

because you can see how well this is done.

-Right. -And they had to carve this into this rock.

[narrator] Aztec stone tablets

date back centuries to the early formation of their empire.

Famed tablets like the Coyolxauhqui stone

and the Aztec calendar stone were chiseled onto rock slabs

and believed by scholars

to be some of the first forms of early astronomy.

The Aztec didn't have a written language like we understand it.

They used pictographs that told the story.

So they would use objects like stone tablets to record information.

But what we're seeing here isn't their normal system of writing.

It looks more like a counting system.

[Josh] That takes some time and work. So whatever they were

trying to keep track of

-was very, very important. -[Chad] Right.

Well, these are the same size as the ingot that we found here.

So this could be a big receipt.

[Josh] It's possible that

each one of these is an actual ingot in itself.

And they just traced them out.

And then that way they'll know they have everything

that's supposed to be there is there when they come back for it.

So if this is a big receipt, where's the gold?

All the clues led us to this cave.

Could it have something to do with years?

There's three different levels there. Three rows.

[Chad] They had to have been tracking something.

That's a count. I mean, it's a count of something.

So how deep was it over there?

I don't know. I was trying to look for further void,

So the magnetometer didn't show any ventilation shaft

or any other opening below the bear cave.

I feel like that they were stashing the gold right here at the bear cave.

And then somehow they took it underground

down to the keyhole chamber.

So there must be another entrance,

somewhere along the turtle pathway.

You know, fellas, we need to go back and keep following that path.

markers carved with religious mantras

that blessed their trek and provided guidance

from the gods.

Unless manipulated by human hands,

stone markers were constructed to withstand

the elements for thousands of years.

I wonder what you could see if you get up top and look out there

to see if there's another connecting clue.

Yeah, that's what I think, too.

[Chad] I think we just need to keep looking around.

[narrator] After discovering an ancient counting ledger

inside the bear cave,

Chad is convinced

the pathway indicated by the gaze of the stone turtle

is pointing to an entrance

into the Aztec underground

and the keyhole treasure chamber.

We know that this path is connected to the keyhole chamber.

And if people were stashing gold

in this bear cave right on this path

that they then took underground somewhere,

then the entrance has to be nearby.

And we're gonna find it.

We haven't really explored this whole backside over here.

[Josh] Look how that's stacked up. Isn't that weird?

Yeah, it does line up with the turtle.

[Josh] Yeah, those rocks are perfectly balanced.

-Like six different layers. - [Chad] Yeah.

I don't see how it's lasted this long.

That could be a marker.

These are definitely arrowheads.

We haven't been here but just a few minutes

and look what we've already found.

But it's right by this huge monument.

[Josh] This site was important.

-[Chad] Exactly. -It's not just a lone arrowhead that got lost.

They were obviously making arrowheads up here

because some of these arrowheads aren't actually finished.

Others are broke.

This is a perfect defensive position.

Nobody would see you up here at all.

-[Chad] Right. -But yet you can see them.

[Chad] What if they're stationed here?

Could be like an armory

where they store all their arms. I don't know.

[Josh] Yeah, for sure.

[Chad] So far, this place is kind of different

than everywhere else that we found arrowheads.

In the underground water system,

I found arrowheads and pottery.

And at the bead site, we have arrowheads and trade beads.

But here, it's just nothing but arrowheads

that look like they were being carved here.

I wonder if this was a weapons cache

or a Native American fortress.

So they were encamped here.

Like, you're up here, you can see 360 degrees, the entire valley.

This spot here, we found, like, five arrowheads

in less than an hour.

I've been at this game for a while,

and I've never seen anything like this.

And it's marked with a giant stone monument.

That means there could be a potential entrance nearby.

And a way for them to come up from the underground

and defend their land.

So who was here? Why all the weaponry?

We have a lot more work to be done here.
