I've been helping my dad
try to find this Aztec gold

that he believes
is underneath the ranch

in the cave system.

We've come so freaking close
to finding it,

and we've uncovered
so many clues.

I know the gold
is down there.

Look how far that goes.

But, man,
it has not been easy.

that's shaped like a keyhole.

We think it's man-made

But we weren't able
to find an entrance...

There's a cave.
There's an opening.

It's a narrow tunnel
that goes underground

right towards the keyhole.

It opens up into
a massive cave.

Like we go

to this huge cavern, man.

And then,
in the back of the cavern,

we found these,
like, big hewned logs, like,

So if those were hand-cut,

So far, we haven't found
where the south cave

connects to
the keyhole chamber.

that's the way in.

finding that
connecting tunnel.

Blind Frog Ranch.

I want to take him
to that south cave

and see if he can find a way
into that keyhole chamber.

all over the world,

looking at prospects
here and there.

There's a lot of things
out there to find.

But finding Aztec gold
right here at
Blind Frog Ranch,

that would be
the find of a lifetime.

So I'm really excited
to be back out here

and help these guys
figure it out.

[narrator] According to lore,

when the Spanish army
invaded the Aztec Empire
in Mexico in 1519,

the Aztec emperor
sent his fortune of gold
northward

to hide it from Cortes.

The treasure is estimated
to contain over 3,000 pounds
of gold bars,

artifacts and jewelry

worth more than
$3 billion today.

Scholars have long believed

that it was
hidden underground

somewhere in northeast Utah.

[Duane] There they are.

There's two outlaws
right there.

So we're just about
getting ready to start
digging here

on Blind Frog Ranch again.

We've been waiting
all winter

to come back
and find the gold.

We really think
that Aztec gold

is stored
in that keyhole chamber.

So getting in there,
that's gonna be

the biggest step
we'll do this year.

trying to help them
find gold.

We've got a lot of
unfinished business here

discovered ancient artifacts

and smoke chimneys

at a location known as
the Bead Site.

That's a great find.

not only indicated
human habitation,

but a possible entrance
into the keyhole cavern.

And as we dig down,
I think we'll find the dome.

Don't forget, the Bead Site
is right over the tails
of the keyhole chamber.

I mean, but we've already
found the tunnel right here.

There's no telling
how old it is,
or who created it.

We're talking wood
that's been placed in there

from somewhere
that we have no idea about.

I think what we need to do
is just split up then.

two different possible ways
into the keyhole chamber.

The south cave,

which sits below the head
of the keyhole chamber,

and the Bead Site,

which sits
right above the tail side
of the underground cavern.

where the south cave connects
to the keyhole chamber.

a full assessment

for any entrances or tunnels
they may have missed.

And I'm gonna grab
some soil samples.

And look for
signs of human activity,

which might point
to a hidden tunnel.

These lines here,

of the sandstone.

But this right here,

And I also want to get
a sample of those logs
that Chad told me about.

To get to the south cave,

Chad and Eric must crawl
one after the other,

over 150 feet
through a tight passageway

that is barely three feet
in diameter.

Once at the south cave,

Eric will survey the area

for any potential tunnels
to the keyhole cavern.

I forgot how narrow

[Chad] Uh, we're about
a quarter way there.

And there's some rocks
that are blocking it off.

along the passageway
to the south cave,

there's a fork
that points to the west.

But it's unknown
where it actually leads.

able to get in there.

widen up a little bit

And it goes way back
this way, too.

at these stalagmites.

[Chad] Wow!

Forming from the ground water
percolating down,

freezing.

Oh, look at that.

-That's amazing.
-[Eric chuckles] Yeah.

This place is amazing.

Wow!

[narrator] Ground water
seeping into the cave
from above

has formed stalagmites.

As they form, the ice
captures oxygen inside,

which fluoresces
when ultraviolet light
passes through,

making the ice
appear to glow.

But the source
of the water is unclear.

The dry rock formation
above the cave

should be shedding water
away from the caverns.

Instead, a steady supply
of ice cold water

is slowly seeping
into the cavern
from parts unknown.

[Chad] That is so [bleep]...

[Eric] It's beautiful.

Most caves have
a year-round temperature

of about 55-60
degrees Fahrenheit.

And that's because
they're insulated
from the surrounding weather.

And this cave has stalagmites
that are frozen.

And so that,
to me, indicates

that there is both water
and cold air coming in.

So we have
some openings somewhere.

It could be a lead.

Over time, the water seeps in
and carves out these caverns.

But honestly,
it's still carving
as it settles.

There may even be
more voids below us.

[Chad] Wow.

These are the logs.

-Here they are right here.
-Wow.

The logs are huge.

Yeah. It's like,
how did they get in here?

Absolutely no way
they could have gotten in
through that opening.

[Chad] Yeah.
They had to get in
some other way, though.

Let's get a sample of these.

We might be able to
carbon date these.

We can see
if it's similar wood
as the box in the pond.

[Eric] Yeah.

[narrator] Four years ago,
Chad discovered a wooden box

in a water-filled cavern
on the ranch.

The box was made with
500-year-old Chihuahua pine

which is consistent with being
from the Aztec empire.

If the timbers
in the south cave

are the same species
and age,

it could be further evidence

that the Aztecs were in Utah
and on Blind Frog Ranch.

[Eric] Bag it, tag it,
send it off to the lab.

That'll work.

[narrator] The team
will analyze the wood samples

using radiocarbon dating
to determine the age

and dendrochemistry analysis
to determine the tree species.

[Eric] I'm wondering
if the Aztecs were in here

using this as shoring.

But I just...
Why did they stop?

answers here, hopefully.

it's like a false floor

My best guess
at this point is that

either the tunnel fork

could lead us
to that connecting tunnel.

Next, we'll do a scan
with a magnetometer

to pinpoint
where to start excavating.

have invited scientist
Bob Morton

to help them examine
the Bead Site,

an area that sits
above the tail end
of the keyhole.

Over the years,
Duane and his team
have discovered

many indigenous artifacts
at the Bead Site.

They also noticed
what appeared to be
smoke vents

on the side of the rock.

Even over there, like, vents.

These little holes
where smoke goes up.

lead Duane to believe

the area may hold
an entrance to
the underground chamber.

Ever since we've been here,
we've always thought that

those smoke marks
were vent holes from

humans somewhere
down below us.

to test the material
on the walls.

If it is soot
from human activity,

then it would indicate
that people were living

somewhere under
the Bead Site rock formation.

Perhaps within
the keyhole chamber.

Yeah, this soot
is nowhere else to be found
on this property.

What's interesting
about coming back here,

is you find things
that are extraordinary

and you scratch your head.

And you're
trying to figure out

what in the heck is going on,
and how are they related?

and find out what it is.

So your test
should be able to

tell us maybe
an age factor of this soot?

If there's carbon there.

Whether we see evidence
of burnt plant material.

When logs are burned,

they leave behind
elemental carbon

in the form of ash,
soot and charcoal.

If the black material
turns out to contain carbon,

that means some settlement,
possibly Aztec,

was stoking fires
deep below the Bead Site.

And the material residue
would also allow Bob

to determine
the age of the soot
through carbon dating.

[Charlie] So what kind of
hi-tech doodad have you got
for us today, Bob?

and let's not forget the lid.

to take your specimen.

And right now, it's this
black layer right in here

that we want to get

off the rock and collected.

Each color represents
a different formula

that back in ancient times,

of glass made with gold.

about Tenochtitlan

and the artifacts
that were discovered here.

I've been corresponding
with Julio

and sharing some of
our findings at the ranch.

And he believes
that the Aztec gold

could have made its way
from Tenochtitlan
up to Utah.

Quite possibly below
Blind Frog Ranch.

So here it is.

That's what
you were looking for.

This is it.
This is the few gold
that's left.

All that was used
by the indigenous people.

Only the high priests,
only the leaders

important people
were able to wear

these kind of artifacts,
like you see these.

Here we see the bar,
that was done
by the Spaniards.

So that they could
run away with it.

They could get it
out of the city.

when the Spanish,
led by Hernan Cortes,

invaded the Aztec Empire
in Mexico,

they attempted to steal
four tons of Aztec treasure

by melting the gold
into bars

and hiding it
under their armor.

They were thwarted
by the Aztec emperor.

And historians believe
the Aztecs

then sent the treasure north
to hide it

somewhere in Utah.

[Julio] So as far as
the original gold
Aztec artifacts,

not much was left
in Tenochtitlan,

We know there's
a lot more,

but we're not exactly sure
where it is.

[James] And if the Aztecs
recovered it

and fled north through Utah,
I mean,

the rest of it could be
under Blind Frog Ranch.

Back in Mexico City,
local historian Julio

has taken James
to the archives

to examine
ancient maps for clues

as to the path the Aztecs
might have taken north

with their gold
while fleeing the Spanish.

Mexico City is basically here,
and they kept going up north.

[James] Through the desert.

[Julio] They had to take
their treasures with them.

And it was
very difficult for them

to go just up
straight north

because they couldn't go
towards the Gulf of Mexico

because it's jungle there.

So they would have headed
a bit west.

New Mexico, Arizona,
and then they ended up
in that region of Utah.

Years later,

Spanish explorers
came to the same area
of northern Utah,

and they made a map
of something incredible
they discovered.

And this is that map.

So here in this map,

we can see the north
of the region of Utah.

[James] What does it
say here?

[Julio] It says...

So, from the shores
of this lagoon,

the Indians of Mexico
went out to found
their empire.

This is the place
of origin

in that region of Utah.

What Julio translated
from this map

is quite possibly
the most incredible findings

I've ever heard
in all of my Aztec research.

It basically says

that the Aztec people
originated in Utah.

For years, the historians
were wondering,

why would the Aztecs
bring their gold to Utah?

Well, it was because
they were bringing it
to their ancestral homeland.

Which translates as
"the place of
the seven caves."

According to their legends,

the Aztecs' ancestors

originated in a place
called Chicomoztoc

or the Place
of the Seven Caves.

Though the exact location
was lost long ago,

this Spanish map
places Chicomoztoc in Utah.

[Julio] This is
a drawing of Chicomoztoc.

[Julio] So here
we can see the seven caves,

the mountain,

and we see that there's
surge plains on top

You even see these people
using a coyote skin,

and that's totally
from the north.

has shown James

an Aztec illustration
of Chicomoztoc,

an underground civilization
that was believed to house

the seven tribes
that formed the Aztec people,

a location they left
in the 13th century

to form their empire
in central Mexico.

For James,

could be connected
to the gold

could have been based on
